The thing that really gets me about the subscription service is that now we will never know in advance which tier a newly introduced NSO system is going to be available for.

Like, will they decide on a case by case basis? Will any systems they add from now on be exclusive to the Expansion Pass by default? Because while I would be fine with, say, Gamecube or DS being Expansion Pass only, the same would be a very hard pill to swallow when it comes to GB(C) or GBA.
I feel like the split will be:

Base Tier gets Nintendo's Consoles released before 1995 and all derivatives
Expansion Tier gets Nintendo's Consoles released in 1995 and onwards, as well as All Non-Nintendo Consoles

by which i mean:

Base Tier will have NES, SNES, GB(C)
Expansion Tier will have N64, GBA, Virtual Boy, Genesis, PC-Engine, probably Master System/Game Gear, and maybe eventually GameCube

maybe we'll get Bloodstained 2 tomorrow at the 505 games showcase...
This is my hope too, or some news about what’s going on with the Switch update. I’m hoping they’re doing further optimizations for Switch on top of some of the load time improvements they did for other platforms in the latest update.

@Derachi I definitely agree that they should sell the games separately but I also think MisterSpo is right about Nintendo treating classic games as an incentive to make people subscribe.

On this point in particular:

Or, what I think will happen SOMEWHERE in the world where Nintendo does business: some very progressive government body is going to enforce a law (I feel like somewhere in Europe would do this) that tells entertainment content publishers that, while they can offer a subscription if they like, they cannot lock their content behind a subscription, and NEED to offer an a la carte purchase option, and this is going to force Nintendo's hand.
Sadly, this would probably require EU legislators to look at other subscription services like Netflix and Disney+ and determine that it’s worth forcing them to sell their content separately. I’m not sure if there’s any movement on that front but it seems extremely unlikely to be a priority. Is this even something that a significant number of people want? I somehow doubt it.

I saw a video of a dude who was able to pull a lot more performance out of the N64 than was initially drawn out, simply by going back and optimising the code of the games. He then went on to make a Mario 64 mod that looked "too good for N64" but it was actually running on an N64 machine.
Some of these coders nowadays are like * really good.*
coders?? good??

as a coder I regret to inform you that those two phrases are mutually exclusive

I think i only own Konami and Square titles, so i can't wait for them to not appear on the service ever
So many of these games are in ownership hell since the PS3 days. Who knows if some of the more obscure games will even get released again.

is it Monday already? guess I have to stop shitpostiiiiiiiaaaaaahahahahahaha gotcha

I really didn’t think I was interested in Mario Strikers but the more I see, the more it seems like “anime chaos soccer with Mario dweebs” and like…

hmm

I think the cursed truth is that I really enjoy video game sports when they are just completely fucking silly

Bald from childhood
Weak
Useless most of the series
Saved a killer android potentially dooming mankind solely because he's a coomer
Somehow wins at life later on

What a chad.
Kuririn is no joke one of my favorite characters. He's weak relative to all the aliens but his dedication to training has made him one of (if not the) the strongest humans, he recognizes he's being outclassed by his best friend early on and still throws himself headfirst in with him, often putting his life on the line to protect his son, showed compassion towards the androids (I just had to google what "coomer" was, ew), and he somehow looks BETTER when he gets older and grows out the doofiest head of hair. He's also one of the only characters in DB who doesn't seem to have a toxic marriage. They both love, support, and respect each other and are successfully raising a sweet little girl. Fuckin love that dude.

Nintendo needs to step up now and bring back our Virtual Console purchases. No excuses.
A someone whose Wii U just bit the dust:
Agreed.

Hello all. I’m playing the first Xenoblade Chronicles for the first time ever (Definitive Edition on Switch), and man oh man, I can’t believe I slept on this game for so long. I love the characters so far, the story has lots of intrigue and the music is just otherworldly. Super amazing stuff so far and I’m glad I finally picked it up in the wake of my hype for 3. (I loooved 2.)
Welcome to the madness!! XB1 is one of my favorites of all time, glad you're enjoying it!

Yeah, I thought something like this could happen (on a technical level, not actually happen because Nintendo). The app checks if you're subscribed on a regular basis - couldn't it just check account data to see which games you have a license for, and then unlock those games? A subscription obviously would unlock all games.
This sounds almost too smart to happen.

I'm the kind of person that would buy so many retro games that offering them as a subscription would save me money and provide a solid value.
This is me with SNES games.
However, my girlfriend doesn't want to pay $65 a year to access the 2-3 N64 games she cares about, and would rather buy them a la carte and just have them on her console forever.
Yet this is me with N64 games.
A la carte would make sense.

coders?? good??

As someone who used to code for a nuclear power plant, I'd generally agree.

That's why I said "some" and "nowadays." 🤣

Since I pretty much exclusively care for GBA at this point, I would hate this. But I can see it happen just as easily as them tying all future NSO systems to the Expansion Pass. It makes sense for them to try and push for people to buy into the more expensive tier every way they can.

I don't know how I personally feel about that. Not because it is Nintendo, but just in general. That is too much government overreach in dictating how a company offers their products, or should I say, non essential luxury goods.

It is one thing to regulate anti competitive practices or anti-consumer practices (and not in the way Twitter and Era like to define anti-consumer), but don't like the idea of them telling anyone this is how you have to offer your product.

I just do not like the idea of governmental overreach in most situations.

I think there's a massive amount of untapped nostalgia for GBA and I think a lot of those games are content-rich enough to warrant the high-price ask. I think GB(C) games would probably stay in the base tier though, as a lot of them are extremely primitive.

TIL everyone referring to PC Engine actually means TurboGrafx-16, so yeah I guess I do care about it a little.

At least for Bomberman '93 and Galaga '90 as those were the only games I grabbed when it was on Wii's VC. Was there anything else fun to play that was exclusive to the console?

I saw a video of a dude who was able to pull a lot more performance out of the N64 than was initially drawn out, simply by going back and optimising the code of the games. He then went on to make a Mario 64 mod that looked "too good for N64" but it was actually running on an N64 machine.

Happen to have a link? Mildly curious how good an optimized SM64 would look haha. I remember the smoke texture was apparently a borked line of code and actually should have some transparency, but that's the only bit I recall haha

As a coder for all of four months in grade 10, I too can attest that I was far from "good" (both morally and academically) in that frame of time

Got a call from my doctor, my blood test is perfectly normal, so now I can go back to playing Monster Train not to ease my mind but to actually enjoy this great game! Thanks to everyone who recommended it, having a blast so far

He did a bunch of stuff, not only going through the code but actually optimized the models and mapped the textures better. Basically using techniques that are commonplace now but that people who were just getting their feet wet with poly-based games wouldn't have necessarily known to do back in the 90s.

daily reminder : Twintelle is Nintendo's best character
Dang. When I heard you were going to announce Nintendo's best character today, I was really hoping it would be Kine the animal buddy from Kirby's Dream Land 2. I made t-shirts and everything to celebrate. Twintelle is good too, though.

konami:
- spent decades cultivating incredible talent only to show them all the door
- sitting on a treasure trove of some of the best classic games of all time, doesn't do much with them
- somehow still makes soccer games, none of them seem to be received overly well?
- owns hudson. made a bomberman battle royale? I should download it and see what the active player number is. it's probably low.
- went all in on location-based amusement/gambling right before a global pandemic (big oof)
- now there's three silent hill games in the pipe

who even are you, konami?

Don't forget Yu-Gi-Oh.

I've said this before and I'll say it again: it'd be Herculean task but I think with the right leadership and the right choices, there absolutely is a way for Konami to get back to respect/prominence. I truly believe this. But it'd involve like, a ten year plan of very carefully curated releases that can cultivate good will and trust, two things that releases like Contra Rogue Corps did not and will not cultivate.

I believe in Konami. They've got a long road ahead of them but I think they can do it.

I was too lazy to type all those hyphens, but you're right. That has to be a huge money maker for them. Hope they use that money smartly.
Their biggest money maker are mobile games and JP only games like eBaseball/Momotaro, their gaming division has always been 65-70% of their profit. They will keep doing this with their in-house teams

Silent Hill/Metal Gear revival is just them licensing out their IPs to make money off them, they will not start making big console titles with a Western audience in mind.

I swear this is relevant to this particular conversation and I’m on my phone so I’m going to brief with this partial bomb throw:

The PS3 and PS2 era (and specifically those two consoles) have blood on their hands for what happened to Japanese games.

Konami is doing "'pretty well' in Japan in terms of video games with Momotaro Dentestu topping over 3.5 million in sales and eBaseball selling well... and they have a lot of mobile games

I wish they’d do a second attempt at a competent remaster collection of the original SH games before releasing all of this new stuff. It’d be nice to have a good version of the originals on modern hardware, as I feel once these supposed remake(s) come out, the originals are going to left in the dust permanently the same way Capcom has all but forgotten the original RE 1-3 games.

Much like reading the future hardware speculation thread I can't make heads nor tails of what is actually being said, but the RAM bus = vroom vroom infograph was v helpful 😋 Nevertheless watching the entire video was surprisingly illuminating, least of all that if budget/time constrictions weren't a thing, 2 player SM64 on genuine hardware rocking low 20fps would be absolutely incredible.

Hell if he does optimize the code enough that it could run 30fps with some dips, I'd get myself one of those Everdrive 64 cartridges in a heartbeat just to download that mod. Just...goddamn, that is impressive.

'Annapurna Interactive' 👀

Hot damn, I am in day one if true. Annapurna have honestly cemented themselves as some of my all-time favourite devs for indie experiences between Sayonara Wild Hearts and The Artful Escape. Neon White is bleeding edge style and them tackling any kind of legendary IP is gonna be a match made in heaven.

Tunning my inner @9-Volt here..

I don't want to start a whole thing... but seeing situations like MultiVersus happening on Year 5 of the Switch, with 100+ million of units sold, with the system being a far market leader.. with every game released on it, being 1st or 3rd Party (regardless of performance) selling like water in the desert.. it's absurdly baffling.

we still have to be conformed with a late port, and in this case is not even about double-dipping, since it's a F2P game..

I don't believe on technical hurdles, not on this day and age where games are scalable and technology is so flexible; Not when so many "impossible ports" happened in the past.. It's frankly tiring and demotivating. WB is weird as heck, they'll care to invest on the Terf Game™ being natively ported but not MultiVersus.

While I'm mostly focusing on sunbathing and the ocean during vacation, I did get about 4 hours into Earthbound so far and it rocks. Just got the first sound stone thingy. I'm in for an adventure

Hot Take:

While I like the name PC-Engine better, I like the design of the TG-16 more :D
I think that's fine

I like the lil baby pc-e but to each their own

now if someone said they liked the name TurboGrafx-16 more than PC-Engine....

Counter. Turbograx 16 name is lame…. BUT… Turbo Duo sounds rad lol

I just don’t like the PC Engine. Now the PC Duo? That one is beautiful!

PC-Engine Duo RX continues to be one of if not THE best, most powerful-sounding console names of all time.
