A little bit more food for thought - like it or not, Splatoon is the closest Nintendo has come to aiming to support a competitive esports scene around one of their titles. With that in mind, the meta of the core multiplayer gameplay is not going to massively change from title to title, it will evolve. You can see that transformation from 1 to 2, and the subsequent updates to 2 which continually focused on balance.
Now, we’re lucky that Nintendo is sure to create a balanced experience around that mode with new modes like Salmon Run, Single Player and world building, and a lot of that remains to be seen. My point is that it’s simply unfair to judge the game based off of what we’ve seen because it is the part least likely to massively change. Now, Salmon Run’s reveal on the other hand? Yeah, that one stung a little bit for me since it was more similar than I’d like. But who knows what else they have coming.
Also, this probably feels underwhelming specifically held up against XB3 because it received it’s classic “Nintendo Blowout” trailer just this week with it being so close to release. They’re not going to show their hand on a game releasing in September now.
