They haved added captions to the NA trailer so now we can actually understand what Eunie is saying

Swordmarch eh? I guess that's what the area with the Mechonis sword is called

Also though I liked what the trailer showed, personally I've never liked the line montage trailers Monolith makes. They're usually the weakest trailer structures they do because it makes no sense and nothing has any coherency. The problem is everything being shown and spoken comes off as nothing but wash and flows right by everyone without any weight or significance, leaving a feeling of indifference. Thankfully the performances (though always coming off as bad when out of context in these types of trailers) seems to be a nice step up from XBC2 and more like XBC1. Nothing was "cringey" bad like XB2's E3 trailer "Take thiiiiiiiiiiiis" or when the clip is Malos talking super fast but all you hear "..............You............................... and that sword....... CAN'T BEEEE"

Their most effective trailers are introductory trailers that are coherent and digestible with a structure someone can follow.

One better example is:

It follows Shulk's narrative entirely so it feels more contained. Establish conflict -> Establish weapon to fight conflict -> Establish power from the sword -> Delve into Shulk's will to use this power to save the world. It's a little rapid but it works much better than the out of context clips in many Monolith trailers. The trailers themselves need more narrative structure to be more marketable because it does them little favors to entice new people. Notice how people always find the most interest when reacting to their trailers when it's just showing off the gameplay and world. It's never because the story is a gripping pitch. They should fix that.

But you also don't want to give too much away from the first trailer. I think this was the best reveal trailer done for a new Xenoblade really, especially compared to 1 and 2.

I agree on both accounts. I think it can be done, however. You just need to use more vague intro pieces like in the beginning of XBC3's trailer with "fighting in order to live", "Aionios", etc. Maybe make a mention of who Noah and Mio are/what they're doing. They spoiled a lot of establishing info in their post direct info dumps on Twitter so it's not like they were keeping certain info a secret. That could have been in the trailer and have been easier to follow than what they've put in.

Definitely the best announcement trailer for a MS game. XCX was the best before but other than the mech hype it was just as barebones as XC2.

There is lots of room for improvement, though. Every Nintendo game should have the same agency that Nintendo hires for their mainline Zelda and Mario game trailer.

I think only the Splatoon team does game trailers well internally.

True, but I'm sure we'll still see those details in future trailers. Especially about the mech encampments and more details about the party are doing about these clocks.

As an Englishman, half the fun is watching Americans struggle to hear certain words. lol
This reminds of a time some podcast went on a rant saying Christian Bale’s did a terrible accent for The Prestige.

Not realizing he was using his natural voice lol

It is amusing seeing us think we know what other countries accents should be lol

The captions confirm the voice saying "you can try to move forward" are indeed Noah. I thought it was funny Luxin and some other trailer analyses were like "that's 100% Rex!"

I would also claim X had the best reveal trailer solely because they didn't make us wait months to see the combat lol.

Just made you wait years to get the game tho lol

I saw someone refer to the majority of XC2’s voice acting as Welsh the other day. lol

It can’t be helped but it’s funny nonetheless. Given me English, Scottish, Welsh, northern, southern, cockney and more!

I saw this and it’s quite baffling.

Noah’s opening monologue, his fight dialogue with Mio and then the line you refer to above all sound totally different.

If I was going to be harsh, I’d say one minute he sounds like a discount Shulk, the next like Rex Lite.

I can’t get a read on him at all. He sounded slightly feminine in the intro, then quite young in the second line, then quite… northern isn’t the word, but certainly more earthy in the last line.

This is assuming those lines are all his. I imagine the nature of the trailer and how lines are spliced together doesn’t help, but it’s strange,

Really intrigued to see how he pans out because my gut reaction is he sounds a bit weak to be honest. But I hope I’m totally wrong and want to be!

What, it didn't even sound anything like Rex.

I didn’t get a hint of Shulks or Rex’s voice acting in any of the lines.

Only ones I recognized were Nia’s and Vandham’s. Some are saying that’s Jenna Coleman voice as well, but I can’t really tell

Did Americans(?) actually struggle to understand what she said? I only saw one person even confused that it was anything but flickering, which is exactly what it sounded like she said ...

So we are indeed filling up flickering clocks in our eyes (that'll never replace the friends we've lost, of course)

If this means more timing elements in combat I'm down

I feel like the main cast will surely carry the weight of the story (as it should be), but I'd be very surprised if the only returning characters (in secondary roles) have already been revealed. That pretty much goes against Takahashi's storytelling.

Of course everyone has their own desires and expectations, but I say let's give MS the chance to surprise us with whatever it is that they have in store.

All the interviews I have seen where someone asks Takahashi about how they wrote their characters, and it's so good, then Takahashi talks about his writing style he says stuff like he actually doesn't really care about characters, but the universe, and then everyone is surprised and laughs.

I'm thinking good character writing praise should go to other team members. I know Kaori Tanaka is an incredible character writer. I really hope she has decided to contribute again. Not that I think it will be bad without her, she's just really, really, good.

British accents are pretty difficult to understand. I mean,

Without subtitle, I don't think I would have been able to understand Banjo-Kazooie or the UK Parliament at all.

I don't think Monolithsoft intends to give away any plotpoints or infact might be deliberately misleading people to come to their own conclusions. What you're asking is basically American Trailers 101 where they basically just give away the entire story. Meanwhile the rearranging dialogue in order to recontextualize scenes away from the actual events that happen in the game is quite common for these kinds of games, and in fact it reminds me for one of the trailers of The Wonderful 101.

However, a personality like his would absolutely betray his entire world to clap back at being slighted if the opportunity arose.
This is what I see happening. A pathetic character trying to make a bad situation even worse.

She kinda already excluded herself from 3 on Twitter.
Who else are confirmed to be returning staff?

Aside from what Takahashi told us in his message I don't think we know. Soraya Saga did make a tweet after this game was announced that said she wasn't working as a writer on Xenoblade 1, 2, X, or 3, but I think she deleted it (she often deletes her tweets so it's nothing new).

Saitom and CHOCO are returning as designers: Saitom as main character designer and CHOCO as designer of key artwork that hasn't been revealed yet.

For the music Yasunori Mitsuda, Manami Kiyota, ACE (TOMOri Kudo, CHiCO), Kenji Hiramatsu and Mariam Abounnasr are returning as composers.

You are right. I was thinking about the characters who are directly connected with the major overarching plot points, such as Alvis and Pneuma. I find it hard to believe that they won't come back for this game or at least play an indirect role. But we'll see.

Wait, what? Can you share the link? Not that I don't believe you, but I searched myself and couldn't find anything.

I would be very surprised if they were able to get her back for FC but not XC3. They probably negotiated both games simultaneously.

I don’t think Saga had any involvement in FC. The Gorg artwork was her only contribution to the entire Xenoblade series.

My bad, I misread the quotes and thought they were talking about Jenna Coleman. Thank you for answering!

X had the best reveal trailer before this one.

Ironically that was arguably the best Nintendo Direct before this one as well.

compare reveal trailer to second trailer ehhhh

reveal

second trailer

I see it as it always like this and shouldn't take anything at front until the second one drop.

Xenoblade X's first trailer before we even knew what it was... it's gotta be one of my favourite trailers ever. The music, the visuals, the big red X was just so exciting. Teenage me screamed like a little baby

I see your X reveal trailer and raise you my X exploration trailer

Fair enough, I'm sure the E3 trailer will be a beauty as well. Interested to see what direction the story and environments will go

Forget trailers, remember the time they had a Nintendo Direct that just let play five minutes of unedited no-commentary gameplay of X showing the party fight a Simius? I'm guessing they probably wouldn't do that now.

Playing Xenogears for the first time… story starting with a war between 2 nations that start with K and A… interesting.🤔🤔

Don't read if you haven't met Elly yet...

Mio eventually befriending the perceived enemy (Noah) is a little reminiscent of Fei and Elly, too. 😁

But you also don't want to give too much away from the first trailer. I think this was the best reveal trailer done for a new Xenoblade really, especially compared to 1 and 2.
I don't like it too much. it's hard to pinpoint it exactly what . I get there's a war and two sides that want to destroy each other, but we know nothing about them or why they are at war. There's too many vague hints and few frames of a bunch of characters in sequence that show you what side they are on either side which was annoying me. But nothing about the characters in detail (I get that tweets reveal more about ego they are)

Also the voice acting I'm not a big fan of. It was that and how the characters and their dialogues were revealed/executed. Some of it I didn't quite understand. But he english caption makes it better.

Maybe they could have revealed less of the main cast characters in the first video and give more explanation of what's going on? I don't know.

God yes. Best 1st xenoblade trailer ever. Nothing tops it. They didn't spoil any story. Just showed some gameplay with an epic track that gave you an idea of what you can expect. It was clearly focused on exploration

I need to pop Xenogears into my PS2 and finally beat that damn game.

I just did actually! I’m looking for doc in the desert right now, some sand sharks wiped me and I got my first death

I’m pretty excited though, I haven’t been spoiled about the story much except knowing that it goes wild places with religion and stuff, not sure if vague descriptions of it count as spoilers or not haha

Haven't played Xenogears in so long but it's the game that made me fall in love with all things Xeno and Monolithsoft, and yes it absolutely gets wild haha. Enjoy. It's well worth the ride.

So I've been thinking about whether the game could be seamless like X and I've decided to make a wild guess that we're going to be exploring an entire planet because why not?

My theory is that each nation will make up one half of the planet with their own continents/maps (basically their own Mira). Travel between different landmass in one nation will be seamless but travelling to another nation will require loading.

I could be completely wrong but it's fun theorising how it'll all work.

I feel like it's trying to be vague, that's the point right now. It still touches on the important aspects aside from combat, which I'm okay waiting a bit to see.

I definitely disagree here. But after Rex's screaming setting the tone for Xenoblade 2 from the second trailer, perhaps I'm just easily pleased.

Maybe they could have revealed less of the main cast characters in the first video and give more explanation of what's going on? I don't know.
Nah, it's a good mix. It shows us still is still a story driven experience but with the exploration we've come to expect.

Unfortunately that's the footage that turned most people off of X lol. I remember the E3 trailer had everyone hyped, even non-Nintendo fans, but once they saw what the gameplay was actually like (not a surprise to anyone that actually knew Xenoblade already, of course), all the newcomers just dropped right off the hype train

I'm leaning toward it being seamless largely because of the boat. That doesn't necessarily mean it would be open world though, at least not to the degree X was, I think they'll still gate progression in some way tied to the story. But the boat has me daydreaming about Monolith trying to implement the classic JRPG structure of gradually opening the world as you get more vehicles - something that tends not to be done as much or as freely in 3D games as it is in top-down pixel art games.

I'm hoping we get an airship. It's been pointed out the boat looks a little like Junks. In the final third of the game, the boat could be upgraded to fly, and then the game world is fully opened up to the player. It'd be like Dragon Quest games introducing the boat about a third of the way in, and then upgrading to the flying phoenix/dragon/whale/hot air balloon toward the end.

I swear there was an interview where Takahashi said they originally wanted the Bionis to be seamless and allow the player to fly freely around it at one point (probably after Mechonis Core). I can't find the interview now, I'll need to keep searching (anyone else remember reading that?) But I think it's possible he could resurrect the idea here. Although hoping for a seamless world, an airship to fly around it, and underwater exploration/combat, maybe I should tone down my expectations somewhat.

Oh, I know, I was just teasing. Between the simius battle video with no explanation as to what's going on and the eight minutes of Gramps talking nonstop in the middle of another direct, Xenoblade's made some unusual marketing decisions.

Oh haha, fair. Usually gameplay showcases are praised so I didn't catch the sarcasm. But in this case it was certainly weird yeah. At least it let people know what they were getting, imagine if those initial hype train passengers actually bought the game on false pretenses lol

Because there wasn't one to spoil

Jkjk 🤭

Aren't wrong though, lol.

I remember expressing concern based on that trailer that the game was going to be super light on story (compared to Xenoblade 1 at the time), and being told I was nuts because it was a Takahashi game.

Well, neogaf, I wasn't the one who was nuts!

So I’ve been seeing that Chrono Cross’s soundtrack is just a remastering and not re-arranging or orchestral tracks.

Perhaps the big project Mitsuda has been working on has been Xenoblade. Tho remastering a soundtrack must be a lot of hard work too. I honestly tho Cross was gonna have a lot of re-arrangements and whatnot.

I enjoyed it, and I remember getting excited watching Chuggaaconroy do a breakdown of it for gamexplain, but I get it wasn't great marketing and it's funny something like that was thrown into the middle of a direct.

Agreed with what you said about letting people know what they're getting. That's why I think they should always put a at least a snippet of the combat in the first trailer. Just save the unedited longform showcases for the treehouse.

I mean, that was obvious even before that. Mitsuda already said that with XC2 the workload was almost too much, so him doing 2 projects at once just doesn't seem possible.
