Rumour Metroid Prime remaster/remake planned for 2022 (UPDATE: new rumor from Jeff Grubb, see threadmarks)

They could just release prime 1 as a remake and prime 2/3 as simple remaster ports along with it, I would rather them do this than not release 2 and 3 at all

they could even bundle 2 and 3 together as simple ports

I just know I want all three. I want to be able to dedicate a month to work my way through all three games consecutively. I'll be bummed if I only have MP1, still happy to have it, but bummed that what I've built up in my head for *checks notes* almost 5 years now won't come to fruition, but I guess I was never promised this. Just hoped, and it didn't feel like a fool's hope, it felt like a no-brainer.

As somebody who's never played the Prime games, either piecemeal remakes every couple of years, or a remakester of Prime with enhanced ports of 2 and 3 sooner or later down the road sounds good to me. I'm just excited to be able to play any of these games. I'll be disappointed if 2 and 3 never make their way over, but any of the Prime games making an appearance on Switch is a win for me.

I’ve been thinking of some QOL they could add and honestly the only big thing I can think of is fast travel BUT I think they should do it like this:

- it’s an actual upgrade you get in the world, contextualized as a Chozo weapon or something.
- it warps you between save stations.
- it is ONLY accessible after defeating Omega Pirate. There is no reason you need to be fast traveling around Prime’s world until the Chozo artifact hunt and cleaning up for 100%. It would destroy the game’s pacing, but would alleviate some of the issues people had with the artifacts (which I honestly don’t agree with)
- it should be locked behind a new gauntlet/optional boss.

if they ever get around to Prime 2, they should do the same PLUS an item that lets you warp between the light world and dark world at any place (if said room doesnt have a dark world equivalent, a “Dark Aetherian counterpart not found” message would show up)
Why does Prime need fast travel is my question?

If you left all artefacts to the end because you thought they where not mandatory (or you did not scan the statues), backtracking to get them all is incredible boring

If true this would be very unusual for Nintendo when it comes to any franchise outside of Zelda. I mean even the Mario Collection didn't have any remakes, and Mario is their poster child.

Not complaining if true though. Never played any of the Prime games and to be honest, first person shooters aren't my genre (though I do understand Prime is more than just that). If the new game now looks pretty enough I might give it a try. I DID pre-order Dread after the Reviews released even though my only experience with Metroid so far was Other M (which people said was bad... I didn't hate it but I definitely didn't like it enough to finish it).

the mario collection on the snes was all remakes tho. Not the first time they've done it, also mario 64 ds and starfox 64 ds

Were Mario 64 ds and starfox 64 ds remakes or ports with adjusted controls though? Serious question, because I always thought it was the latter.

If it was the former, then I guess I have to rephrase my statement: This is very unusual for the Nintendo of recent years (outside of Zelda).

I played Links Awakening for the first time on Switch and I didn’t think it was a very friendly game when it comes to help guiding me. Like I didn’t need it to show me where to go, but it got frustrating and confusing at times because I didn’t know what to do. And it’s not like a fully open world where I can get from one spot to another.

You have to follow all these set paths so it takes a while. Nintendo should’ve done more. It’s a 20 year old game. Metroid Prime is a 20 year old game. They can do some stuff to help a little with modern players so they don’t get confused and frustrated much.

Didn't Metroid Prime already have a helping system that tells you where to go next? I guess other QOL stuff could be done, too.

But we should not be expecting too much of a revamp of gameplay mechanics, given what is rumored. I'm honestly surprised we haven't seen more remakes like this - take the game's content and replace the models and such with much improved models and texture work. I guess some Remasters do that.

I have a feeling that Metroid Prime Remake's success will determine how they handle 2 and 3 (if at all). 3 will absolutely need some gameplay tweaks (or require joy con controls, for better or for worse). I suspect Tantalus is on speed-dial for those at some point.

I don't disagree but in today's world you really need a fast travel to avoid blowback from some gamers.
Exactly. We have to think about today’s people. How many of these exploration based Metroidvanias have fast travel of some kind?

Metroid Prime wasn’t designed with fast travel in mind, but even the hint system isn’t good enough.

Would be great, never got around playing Prime Trilogy even though I completed every 2D Metroid game except Metroid 2 and it's 3DS remake.

Imo it doesn’t, but the artifact hunt is complained about a lot so introducing a fast travel option at the end of the game would help

Not a fan of straight up fast travel, but I wonder if they could add a few extra area connections/shortcuts.

That’s exactly what makes this possible - Metroid isn’t the poster child. Prime is a series developed by a wholly owned subsidiary versus a studio located within corporate HQ for a franchise they’re less ardent about keeping pure. That opens the door to possibilities Nintendo would never allow for Mario. There was an interview with Intelligent Systems about one of the Paper Mario games that essentially said a character like Goombella would never get approved by the branding team for any modern games.

I agree with this. Don’t add fast travel, add extra connections that are only available with upgrades to shorten the backtracking time late-game.

It can't be stressed enough. Nintendo truly does love releasing remasters/remakes during anniversaries.

Anniversaries are one the easiest marketing templates.
  • Xenoblade Chronicles: Definition Edition - Released during Xenoblade Chronicle 1's 10th anniversary.
  • The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword - Released during Skyward Sword's 10th anniversary.
  • Super Mario 3D All Stars - Released during Mario's 35th anniversary.
  • Advance Wars 1 + 2 - Releasing during Advance War's 20th anniversary
  • Pokemon Diamond & Pearl - Releasing during Pokemon's 25th anniversary (and Diamond & Pearl's 15th anniversary)

Plus, Metroid Prime wasn't just any game. It's one of the greatest games that Nintendo has ever created. It sits at 97% on Metacritic.

Prime 1 was Metroid's Ocarina of Time moment. It would be almost insulting if Nintendo didn't acknowledge Metroid Prime's anniversary in some way.

And who can forget all the times Metroid Prime been compared to Citizen Kane...

IGN - Citizen Kane: Is Metroid Prime Our Citizen Kane?
Kotaku - The Man Who Never Wanted To Make The 'Citizen Kane' for Games

That’s a great observation. I hope they do the same for Eternal Darkness’s 20th anniversary as well! Haha But I am really, really excited for this remake.

Obvious connection to add would be adding a connection from Tallon or Chozo to Phendrana, because hot damn is getting to Phendrana a pain in the butt, cause you have to schlep through Magmoor every time.

I'd love if they'd include the scrapped Metroid prime 1.5 concepts into the game as a post-game chapter that you can play on your own sorta deal

o.0 I had missed that there were actually very solid people behind this rumour. Pretty exciting, could do very well for Niintendo. It does kind of suggest that Prime 4 is likely 2023 or later.

Yeah, Metroid Prime in its original state for modern players would be too hard and boring because backtracking,
some kind of fast travelling and some other improvements regarding map help would be more than welcome.

Metroid dread has back tracking and no direction though, if they can handle that they can handle the original prime with just updated graphics

Nah, that's not really true. They released Metroid Return as a remake on 3DS, will release Advance Wars Reboot Camp later this year, and there are many other examples of this in Nintendo's history (several fire emblem games for example, star fox 3ds, diddy kong racing, luigi's mansion). They do it sometimes, and it's true that it's a bit random, but it's certainly not out of the question.

I'd say nintendo doesn't have a real policy about this, and they do it when they think it's justified and they have the right reason and studio lined up for it.

Handheld Metroid games are much smaller games in scale in comparison than Metroid Prime games, so much more backtracking and not knowing where to go or to do next.

Is The Wind Waker HD a remaster or a remake to Nintendo? This is the kind of jump I expect for Metroid Prime 1 HD.

The amount of remasters Nintendo has been relying on with the Switch has been driving me crazy, but when it's a game I considered one of my two favourites ever for a long time I guess I can allow myself to get excited.

For me, if I was remaking this game, the one thing I'd look to change is the combat and bosses. At the time, people waved away issues in this area with the argument that "It's a first person adventure, not shooter. The shooting doesn't have to be good." And at the time that made sense, when other FPS games used mostly linear corridors and shooting was the only purpose of them. But that doesn't fly much these days, now that many other FPS games have the atmosphere, environmental storytelling and non-linear level design that Prime made famous WITH their extremely polished shooting mechanics.

The main problem is that shooting yellow pellets that have no physical concussive effect on enemies until they suddenly keel over just isn't fun. The second problem is that most enemies (and especially bosses) are "pellet-sponges" that take tons of damage and don't deal much out. Prime 3 was aware of this, giving you the corruption beam to sacrifice your health for a strong level of damage - a neat band-aid to the issue. The third problem is that most enemies have very, very simple attack / AI patterns. So I'd love to see more hit reactions to Samus' beam, and for damage dealt and taken to be increased.

As for bosses, almost all of them spent significant time invulnerable with no way to interrupt them. Almost all of them go on so long that the tension is gone halfway through the fight. Waiting for Prime to create Phazon puddles was such a boring way to end such an epic game (and sometimes it would just bug out and refuse to, lol) The chozo ghost rooms suffered from the same issue.

I don't have any faith that those things will be changed - but it's what I'd like to see. Even if they aren't, the level design, morph ball gameplay, soundtrack and legacy will ensure any Prime remaster is successful.

I also hope the remaster is being made with the Switch 4k in mind. Metroid Prime is one of the few Nintendo games where graphics really matter, in order to create the immersive atmosphere the game relies so heavily on. This is also the reason why I think the delay of Prime 4 was a good thing - it would not have been suited to the Switch, which is already struggling big time with a bunch of first party software. Dread, on the other had, is absolutely perfect for it. Looks decent docked, is perfect for handheld. Things have worked out well for Metroid here.

Eh I rather them not change anything it’s good the way it was, I want everything to be the same except for the graphics of course

Metroid Prime doesn't really need fast travel. I played it for the first time in 2015 and was fine. Trends and making a game easier shouldn't dictate how games are made. The only point where I feel fast travel would be fine for Prime 1 is when you go on the scavenger hunt towards the end. And that's only because it's the end and the scavenger hunt is the only part of the game with backtracking that can feel unnecessary. Other than that, the game is pretty much fine as is.

I get what you're coming from as I always find myself confused as to what to do at least a few times in Zelda games. However, Link's Awakening on top of being very linear also has a hint system that is usually pretty straightforward. Think the only times where it's not obvious where to go is the mine field and the hole in the ground that leads to the animal village. Considering most Zelda games have at least a few of these moments (at least the 2D games do), I don't think this is a problem with updating the game, that's simply how the games play.

The backtracking through Magmoor Caverns is pretty bad and tiring. There could be huge improvements done in that area but going by reports the game design will basically be 100% the same.

If this is true it’s so nice. Metroid was gone for so long but it feels like as of the last few years. It’s back an better then ever. Samus Returns, Dread, this remake, and then Prime 4. Samus is eating and I am here for it.

Personally wouldn't be surprised if Prime 2 and 3 eventually get remastered, even if they don't happen on the current Switch.

Though Metroid is now in a privileged position - it has two dedicated teams to work on new games (Retro and Mercury Steam), so alternating between new Prime and new 'mainline' games is potentially possible. It's not quite like Zelda, where the 2D/handheld series appears to have dropped by the wayside in terms of new releases, at least for now.

Leaning into Prime 1 is a great idea. It's easily the best Prime and it's one of Nintendo's best games ever made. If it's anything like Ocarina of Time on 3DS, I'm super stoked for it.

I'll play it, but I feel this project is recognizing the game as a masterpiece and re releasing it to solidify itself among a bigger playerbase. It IS one of the best games ever made.

But for someone like me I wish we would get a trilogy so i could play the games i haven't finished. But yeah I'm game!

When does everyone think this releases if it’s basically completed? I bet Nintendo will want a 6 month gap at least with Dread, so maybe spring? Though late summer has been the release timeframe for many Metroid games in the past.

I’m enjoying Dread a 100% right now, but Prime 1 is something special in its own way and I’m so looking forward to this remake/remaster.

August to October. Announced at E3 and we get our first trailer of Prime 4.

If I had to guess, July or August 2022. The September-December period will be slammed with BOTW2, a new Mario game (probably Mario + Rabbids), Xenoblade 3, Bayonetta 3, etc. Summer would be the perfect time.

I bet this game will be released very near Prime original 20th anniversary.

that is november.

Imagine for a second if last quarter switch lineup is Zelda BOTW2, Prime 1 Remake and next EPD Tokyo project (DK?)

With next year's lineup is really hard to guess when to expect. Sounds like E3 tier announcement so July will be way too soon, even tho it's possible. August sounds about right as other Metroid games released that month(2 and 3 iirc).
If it's revealed in a February direct I fully expect it in July tho. If it's E3, it can be anywhere between august and November really.
It all depends on when Zelda, Bayo 3 and Splatoon 3 release imo. I don't know if we can use patterns or past with next year, because we're now sure as hell Zelda isn't releasing in March. If it takes out the Link's Awakening spot it's on September, so Metroid would be either October or August. If it takes the Dread/OLED October, then Metroid in either September like Samus Returns or November, exactly the month MP1 came 20 years earlier.
Bayonetta 2 came in October 2014. Splatoon 2 came in July 2017 and 1 in May 2014. I'm kinda bugged how the release schedule of next year will look like. It starts with a Pokemon mainline game releasing in January so literally anything os possible.
