for obvious reasons
I know what you mean by this, but I don't think it's necessary if you do want to participate. All the bidding and Opinions and whatnot is done in public, so everyone is capable of keeping score themselves if they choose to. The only decision-making power you really have is on what counts as a "regular Direct thread post", and possibly which Opinions are closer to being correct in the case of ties. If you end up being a real contender, you can recuse yourself from those decisions and let a staff member (who is not a contender) take over.

Up to you, of course.

EDIT: And staff can also handle the raffle if you're worried about it looking like a conflict of interest in the remote chance you win.

I'm actually thinking about a weekly raffle for my thread too and I have no idea how to handle it (the eShop card part) so if you guys could give me a hand too that'd be quite swell.

if you do want to participate
heh I kinda don't

it's also more about my coverage of it actually. I think the division between me running the show and the competitors actually participating will make it more interesting/entertaining

I appreciate it though

Same here. Halo just feels right on controller.

I'm down to link up in the near future if you are! Gamertag is also Dragoncaine
I just need to get these connection issues sorted. Dunno what happened. Game was running swimmingly after I switched from my 5G wifi to my 2G wifi, now both are shit.

I am once again asking for a new 2D/top-down Zelda. Death's Door is all kinds of fantastic, but it is making me realise how much I want to see what EPD 3 could do to reinvent or improve on the top-down Zelda formula. I'd sort of put that desire to one side because from what I could see, the lead design group for portable Zelda have cropped up on a few Switch games since 2017, which maybe suggests at some point they were pulled away from Zelda to work on other projects.

Can't quite remember, though. I did go through a feverish research/speculation frenzy earlier this year on Era when it comes to 'portable' Zelda, and I successfully swung myself from "optimistic it will happen soon" to "who knows if Nintendo could even get a production team together soon pessimism".
My hopes of EPD getting one out are pretty dire, if like you said the staff has been on other games (and most likely lots of them on BotW2)

But to be honest, I wouldn’t mind them giving grezzo a shot at an original 2D Zelda. I want to see a fresh new setting, lore, species, characters for it. Like what capcom brought to the table with Minish Cap and the Oracles.

I mean Mercury steam got to make Metroid fucking Dread after just one remake, Grezzo has done three for the Zelda series!

Grezzo co-developed Triforce Heroes and I think provided the bulk of the team for that, so they have had a shot at it which didn't do brilliantly, but I wouldn't pin that on them (one of the weaker performing Zelda titles commercially and critically, though I never played it). I'm sure Nintendo value them as a partner and I expect Grezzo to continue to work on Nintendo-published games, but the hiring calls they put out at the start of this year suggest they're now working on an original title of their own rather than Zelda and it's not clear if that's with Nintendo (I'd assume it is, given they've already worked on 2 Switch games). While I like what Grezzo have done with Zelda, personally I'd rather see EPD better resourced and capable of putting together a 'portable' Zelda, allowing Grezzo to work on more original games of their own in addition to further remasters.

I think the thing which guarantees more 2D Zelda is the greater profile the franchise has post-BotW, as well as the continuing commercial success of different Zelda games. It's not explosive growth for each individual game, but every post-BotW release has performed strongly - Link's Awakening is on the road to 6 million (6th best-selling Zelda title, I think), Age of Calamity must have done around 4 million (more than a number of mainline Zelda games!), and Skyward Sword HD has virtually matched the lifetime sales of the original in a little over 2 months and will likely go on to sell a similar amount, or perhaps more, than Link's Awakening. We're in for annual Zelda releases of some kind from now on, I think, which incentivises Nintendo to find an idea and resources for more 'portable' Zelda at some point; and with Link's Awakening selling so strongly, there's clearly a considerable market for that kind of Zelda game.

Thing is, Nintendo have a laundry list of possibilities for annual Zelda releases. It seems guaranteed Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess HD will make it to Switch at some point, which gives Nintendo one or two years of Zelda releases depending on how they approach it. Link's Awakening 2019 provides Nintendo and Grezzo with an engine and assets to use as the basis for Oracles remakes. We surely haven't seen the last of Hyrule Warriors, given how successful Age of Calamity was. We can't rule out additional spin-offs, especially after Cadence of Hyrule. We can assume that, with open-world Zelda being enormously popular and resource intensive, it continues to get the bulk of resources. There's no shortage of potential Zelda releases in the next 2 or 3 or even 4 years, though I'm not sure Nintendo will do back to back years with re-releases.

Perhaps EPD's expansion will help here; and we might have a similar case to Link Between Worlds, which had a tiny team work out the basics of the game because internal resources were stretched thin working on launch titles for Wii U and 3DS. Aonuma and a couple of others may well have been beavering away on the future of portable Zelda - which Aonuma is on the record as saying he wants to continue independently of the open world games.

Had to watch Don’t Look Up (which is entertaining enough but not as smart as it thinks it is) when all I wanna do is play DQV.

@Raccoon
First of all: glad to hear your mom's surgery went well. ❤️
Second of all: holy hell the Direct thread sounds epic. And I'm very much looking forward to the FamiCast, too. Between Nate/MVG and the community podcast, I'm ready to drown in some good Nintendo-y ASMR.

i should get a new graphics card

i guess they're still impossible to find huh

If it helps any, I've reliably used NowInStock.net when I was on the hunt for amiibos back in the SSB4Wii U days and it also helped my friend get a PS5, so if you haven't yet they might be worth a shot for a new card

~~

Does anyone have recommendations for magnetic charging cables for controllers, or heard any horrendous news about them? I have two PS4 controllers with microUSB (the original cable is now fickle with wanting to work), and three Switch controllers that take USB-C and I was thinking maybe just get the little adapters respectively for each controller and just swap around with the one cable to charge each as necessary

I am completely intrigued by the lore of Diablo and so I wanted to buy the Book of Cain and the Book of Tyrael and man, they are just out of print it seems (I don't buy eBooks).

Thinking about it, I can really respect thick and comprehernsive books on games, the world and lore of those games described as if it is real history. when done well I love it. It really feels like an expansion to a gaming world you love.

So I downloaded a Windows iso onto a USB drive so I can boot from that but booting from it gets me a "check cable connection! PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM." message followed by instructions to select a proper boot device or insert boot media.

But it's inserted, the USB drive is showing up. And the file is there.

Edit: I'm an idiot, my laptop runs windows 8 not windows 10. Trying again with that.

Reggie tweeted "Mother Nature is pissed off" in regards to the outrageous temperatures we've had this year and more than half the comments are some variation of "you mean MOTHER THREE RIGHT LOL" and I cannot imagine what it must be like to work as a recognizable person in the games industry. 😐

Computer still borked, so I'm not gonna be able to make a fancy logo for ST4.

So if someone wants to make one you can DM me for the specific name and theme I plan to use.

Thank goodness I already did and uploaded my awful blender animation the other day...

Finished watching Arcane and I thought it was pretty good. It was a slow start and I admit I fell asleep during the first two episodes. But things picked up after that. I don't play League of Legends so I don't have any connection to the characters but I think it did a good job of introducing the cast to people like myself. Between this, Castlevania, and Dota, it's interesting how these Netflix shows have adapted the source material to fit a TV show.

I know people wanted the long rumored Zelda live-action show for Netflix but if it was in the plans, I'm kinda glad it didn't make it into production. I don't think it was the right time for that. I feel like it would have been butchered. I know things like the Witcher has been successful but I'll even admit that some of the CG on the monsters can look at times and the elves still have a cheesy and cheap look, in my opinion. I am not confident a studio could make a Zora not look stupid in live action. If a Zelda show ever gets made, I think it should be completely animated or CG. Vibrant and unique art styles are very much part of the series now and any TV or movie adaption should also reflect that.

And a hypothetical show also should not try to directly adapt the source materials into a TV/movie format. Of course the Dota and LOL shows aren't about people fighting creeps and destroying towers in three lanes. And Castlevania really dove into the backstory and politics of the vampires. If I was in charge of a Zelda adaption, I would make something that focuses on other characters and backstories that expand the Zelda lore. Something like a show explaining how the Shiekah became Hylia's chosen guardians or something like that.

I thought it was really weird when all of a sudden, I saw throughout my timeline on Twitter lots of tweets talking and making box arts of Fire Emblem Path of Radiance remake. Then on YouTube, several YouTubers are making videos on FE PoR remake. Did I miss something?

Turns out, SwitchForce and other people are reporting our favorite yellow mouse 'leaker' saying they are reliable for 'leaking' 2D Metroid, Splatoon 3 including a FE remake in 2022.

I'm honestly tired of misinformation and clickbaits.

A Fire Emblem remake has been rumored for a while. What I don't think is why so many Youtubers think that it's a Path of Radiance remake. History would suggest that Genealogy of the Holy War would be the most likely candidate. So people assuming it's a Path of Radiance remake is weird. My guess is that many Nintendo Youtubers don't know Nintendo has already remade FEs 1, 2 and 3 and many probably don't know that there are several Fire Emblem games that were only released in Japan and haven't made their ways to the West yet. Basically, they don't know basic info about the games their Youtube channels are centered around.

The Tellius games are definitely some of the hardest to get ahold of. I'd prefer Genealogy of the Holy War because it's so good, the GRRM-esque twists would play very well today, and it's one of the few left that hasn't been localized into English yet. I might try a playthrough of it on the Japanese NSO, but I'd love to see it in English.

Do you think Switch games will command high prices in the future just like N64?

Depends on what you consider high. There will be some games that will be cheap while others will go for really high prices. But 10 years from now, I think it's safe to assume that most Nintendo first party games will probably range between $40 to $70. Nintendo games hold their value really well so you're unlikely to get them for dirt cheap but on the other hand, you will probably be able to sell your old games for a decent price and most Nintendo games aren't so niche that their values skyrocket.

The easy access to digital games via the eShop will probably clamp down on the price of most games, IMO. Unless you're a collector of low print games or games that don't have digital releases (an increasing rarity these days), there's very little reason to actually own the physical cartridge for most games. Given enough time, Switch stuff will become rarer and expensive, but they're certainly not going to get crazy expensive.

Speaking of mental issues, I had started developing these tics late this year. The kind I can sorta control but, like blinking, feel like I have to perform. I was worried it might have been a brain tumor or something. Luckily, the MRI I took didn't show anything of the sort.

However, my neurologist seems to think I might be under the autism spectrum. I've always had your basic speech and body language attributes typically found in autism so it wasn't really news to me. I thought I could get by as I usually copy mannerisms I see on tv as it used to help me go through the day, which in turn gives me an existential nightmare. Now that I'm older, I'm starting to not hide it as well as I used to. At least, I thought I hid it well.

It's still an unofficial diagnosis. I'm supposed to be meeting another doctor for it, but the best times for the appointment are early in the morning and those aren't the best times for me. Still, if I had known what autism was during my younger years, it would have helped me during my terrible experiences in school and life in general.
As an autistic who wasn't diagnosed until I was 19, I also wish I'd known sooner. School and life were very tough on me as well.

I hope your diagnosis, however unofficial, brings you some clarity and peace with yourself. For me, it was the first big step on the long road to self-acceptance.

The next big step was to learn to stop focusing on just the difficulties my autism gave me and focus on the positives instead; the strengths it gave me, such as my intense focus on my interests, attention to detail, and determination. Another big one was connecting with the larger autistic community so that I could learn from those who had walked a similar path, and not feel so alone. Over time, I've gradually come to see my autism as an important part of who I am, and after many long years, I finally like who I am.

I'm very aware though that I've been very fortunate; I work in an autism support organization run by autistics for autistics, so I am surrounded by amazing people on the spectrum both at work and in my friendship circle, and as a result it's perhaps easier for me to have a more positive view of autism than is common. After working with hundreds of autistics though, I really do feel that's society's pathological and very negative view of autism is wrong, and that it is an invaluable part of the wider spectrum of humanity.

If you ever have questions or just need someone to talk to about your new diagnosis, please don't hesitate to PM me, I'm always happy to help, and this is literally what I do for a living. :)

Wishing you the very best in your journey.

Adam McKay's smugness and condescension toward his audience gets worse and worse with each prestige movie he makes, imo. I loved The Big Short, but it's all been downhill since for me. Re: Don't Look Up, my opinion is that he thinks he speaks in revelations, when his voice is actually a mix of safe, predictable "Old Man Yells at Cloud" Boomer comedy and unearned shifts into dramatic territory that are immediately undercut by the smug, condescending cynicism that wouldn't let up for the previous two hours.

That running gag with JLaw and the snacks was super funny, though.

It's a shame Age of calamity was advertised as it was and conversation about the story crowded its release because this game is still a damn fever dream joy for me. I got a full sequel to one of my guiltiest pleasures of gaming (grinding HW) that I return to again and again, usually on plane rides like I did this past weekend. It now has its teeth back in me as I make my way through the DLC and... what a joy and passion filled project it is.

I can't wait to see what the Nintendo musou is and hope this partnership never dies.

This would probably result in a stronger adaptation, I think. Or something like Age of Calamity's narrative perspective, where Link is among a cast of characters and Zelda is the primary protagonist. Animation is certainly the way to go with Zelda, though. It'll be interesting to see how Nintendo's plans on that front advance.

Brain fart prediction at midnight: 2022's Fire Emblem game is Fodlan Warriors. 2023's Fire Emblem game is Echoes: Genealogy of the Holy War.

Man I gotta say, I am unpleasantly surprised on how back-and-forth and generally eh I am on Skyward Sword. I was pretty excited to play it since it's been a while since I've played one of the more casual traditional linear 3D Zeldas (last one I played was Majora's Mask a little over a year ago, which is anything but a casual experience and also not super traditional even if it a classic 3D Zelda), and I heard it had a lot of improvements from the original. It really seemed like one of Nintendo's better remaster efforts since they've started the trend.

But ... I don't know. It still took me about 2.5 - 3 hours to just finish the tutorial. Pacing-wise, the game feels awful, which makes me wonder how bad the original Wii release really was in this regard, since it's practically infamous for poor pacing. I feel like the intro for the HD version might actually be way better for people who have played Skyward Sword before rather than people who haven't, since you don't have to pay too much attention to the world's introduction and you can appreciate the pacing changes. The worst part is that this bad pacing kind of affected how much I cared for the storyline, I mean I liked hanging out with Zelda a lot, it was cool, but if the narrative was more immediate I think the result would be better once you actually start your quest to save her.

Nintendo obviously put a lot of effort into making this remaster the definitive version of the game while still retaining the original feel, but there's just as lot of things that seem off. Like:

  • The fact that using motion controls doesn't give you the option to also use buttons for certain actions. Look, I get it with stuff like swinging the sword since that completely remaps the controller, but why can't I also interchangeably use button controls for stuff like diving or using the beetle? I legitimately had a lot of trouble with the introduction to diving, where you have to make very specific movements in order to land in the middle of the circle, and eventually just gave up and switched to button-controls. Make this work like just about any other Switch game, Nintendo!
  • The fact that every time you want to remove a marker on your map, you have to specifically go all the way to the marker and get rid of it.
  • The beetle's speed. I mean ... c'mon. This couldn't get an adjustment? I know there's apparently an upgrade later but, wasting the players time should not be worth rewarding them with less time wasting later. At least make the default speed a little bit better.
  • I can't quite remember how vines work in motion-controls mode, since I've been alternating between button and motion controls, but the way they work with buttons is just awful and very clunky. Why? It looks awkward and plays awkwardly. It's Ape Escape gone-wrong (I'm sure this is one complaint that probably couldn't be changed without some heavy overhauling, but still).
  • Like the beetle complaint this has more to do with how the original game already works rather than how they could have subtly changed controls for the better, but I'm really surprised that the stamina meter somehow seems worse and more ill-fitted in a linear 3D Zelda than in a giant massive open world game like Breath of the Wild. You can really tell how certain areas were made bigger for no apparent reason other than the run button existing, but the convenience of running is often hindered by the stamina meter. And unlike Breath of the Wild, there's really no reason to stop & pause when your stamina runs out. It's not like you're taking in and accessing this big breathtaking open world where you can take a million paths and have to figure out how to best progress or use your time, you're just waiting out a recharge time limit so you can continue to run down this same linear path. I think running not being part of the stamina meter's depletion would have been nice, or possibly not having a stamina meter at all, but I guess I'll see if this opinion changes as the game progresses. It just feels like the game has so many elements, along with the stamina meter itself, that actively make you slow down to a crawl and do things in a much longer fashion, like a "no-fun-allowed" paradigm of sorts. Guess I just disagree with Nerrel here so far.

That being said, there is definitely some positives. I've played a lot of games in the past few years where I thought the visuals for certain games looked mediocre or just a bit bland while watching people play them, only to be in awe at how good they look when I'm immersed in the game. Skyward Sword HD already looked a lot better to me than the original release just by watching Youtube videos on it, I'm not really sure what it is but a lot of Wii games seem to have their colors pop a lot more when they're remastered on the Switch, but man it really is a very pretty game. I'm still not quite so sure I love the art style itself, it feels like a creative albeit messy way of hiding the poor textures of the game, and some of the character designs are a bit blegh. But its all delivered in a very cohesive way to make sure the colors constantly pop and the player never takes notice of the detail itself so much as the general ideas being characterized.

I like that the game sort of treats its pre-dungeon areas as dungeons themselves. Which, I guess Zelda has always kind of done, but it's something that the 3D games had been doing more and more and its really cool to see how Skyward Sword has approached it. At least with Faron Woods, guess I can't talk about much more than that since I've only really beaten the first dungeon. That location, thinking back on it, almost reminds me of how Majora's Mask handled areas. It became more about solving the problems in an area itself, than simply using the area to progress to the dungeon, which is cool.

I also really like the world-building and most of the dialogue. As of now it's a bit hard for me to tell where the game stands here in respect to the rest of the franchise, I feel like just about every Zelda, especially the 3D ones, do a decent enough job in this regard, and Skyward Sword's world-building gimmick characters sometimes step into the realm of annoying rather than entertaining. But Skyward Sword does have some serious things going for it. For example, the fact that Groose basically calls out Link for the boring, bland character he is, practically meta-textually mocking how such an otherwise unremarkable avatar character can constantly be considered so amazing within the world of The Legend of Zelda. Ghirahim is awesome. I let out a big smile once I realized that this meme character everyone loves is, basically, Nintendo making a Metal Gear Solid antagonist. This is also the only Zelda game I can think of where a major "dungeon" item is not only acquired outside of a dungeon, but in a super memorable and personable way (the slingshot you get from Bucha).

Ultimately I'm enjoying it enough so far, I should be able to finish it and mostly have a positive experience throughout, but it seems like there's way more hiccups than there ought to be. Another thing I'll say that's probably an unfair complaint is, I've at least had a few moments with button-only controls where it legitimately dawns on me how much of this game is essentially just doing what you already did in Zelda games before, but in a more cumbersome and less convenient fashion. And really, I think that's my biggest problem so far. Obviously, it's alleviated a decent amount by using motion-based gyro controls rather than the right analog to swing, but getting stuck in a few webs because I didn't hit the web in the exact angle the game wanted me to, or trying to learn how to dive with motion, or trying to use the beetle precisely with gyro, or perhaps my most consistent control problem of the spin slash being very finnicky with button controls ... I'm not really doing anything I haven't done before, nor am I doing it better, it's just a more inconvenient version of the same thing.

It's really surprising Nintendo didn't take this opportunity back in 2011 to do things that might actually change the game, either. For example: With how smoothly Link holds his sword in this game while walking, why didn't they take this opportunity to make it the only 3D where Link can do attack animations without having to stop for every single one? More powerful attacks like the spin slash or forward thrust or even the skyward strike could stop the player, but regular strikes could be done while moving. Think about how Counter-Strike players play CS:GO. Basically every time you aren't doing anything meaningful, you cycle through your weapons or press the weapon examination button. Make it so that players can do stupid sword swipes while not much is going on. Make it so that enemies can be more reactive and faster now that the player can strike while being mobile.

I'll also say that while Nintendo will never do it because it probably seems like competition for the Joycons (controllers which are supposed to be the most versatile in Nintendo's catalogue and allow you to enjoy every experience imaginable) and thus a large part of the Switch branding itself ...

... playing Mario Galaxy & Skyward Sword back to back makes me really wish Nintendo would allow for some kind of Wii remote option. Not the Wii remote itself necessarily, just something the Switch could use for accurate pointer controls. Like a new Switch controller. The Switch Pointer U? No? Ok ... I'm done wishing for things.

...Wow, that was way longer than I expected! My bad.

Arcane is really really good, I got hooked and never had any kind of interest in LoL before.

I was a bit disappointed that the obviously gay Viktor didn't get a confirmation, but Vi x Caitlin was already a big win.

I am once again asking for SNES Remix. It is a fucking no-brainer, Nintendo. Why am I never getting nice things?

Signed, a certain someone who got the nicest thing ever earlier this year when Metroid Dread released.

Why did Ryza 1 price got so low (well, 40 bucks)? I remember seeing the game at 80 bucks minimum, was there a re-print or something I missed?

A Warriors game of the War of Liberation or of the 5 year that Byleth was asleep would be a no brainer, imo.
