So, for 2022 I kinda had the idea of making a "NSO Exploration" thread where we could play through some of the lesser known games available on the service, probably with recommendations from people here to avoid the bad ones lol.

Anyone would be interested on that?

There’s no real benefit of nintendo announcing a new system relatively early compared to when it will release . The only main benefit , and why i believe sony and microsoft did so in my opinion, as early as they did for the ps5 and series is so that developers could openly talk about making games for the next system . I don’t know about others , but given their response to latest rumors , it’s very clear to me Nintendo very much still does not want developers or anyone else talking about what they have next even as dev kits have rolled out for it seemingly.
Otherwise , I follow sales both now and back in 2019 and 2020, and as far as i remember not just xbox but even ps4 was declining faster than expected by 2019 and leading into 2020 compared to ps3/360 time aligned and while various factors were involved there (including a unexpectedly big 2018 due to fortnite, for ps4 in particular ) I can’t help but think those early announcements also played a part. There’s imo no reason for an announcement until whatever comes next is 6 or so months from release. I also just think outside of more core gaming spaces that the switch doesn’t feel as “old” and with folks wondering when the next thing is coming as folks think.

next year, Switch will have a 10 year old cpu

oh my god

okay so the switch is middle aged fucking whatever

I think they can afford to acknowledge their massive technological leap iterative successor that is already being reported on before E3 so they can build their advertising strategy around software, which this system needs. the lite and oled didn't need that sort of marketing

I'm just happy you seem to finally acknowledge that the Dane is a big leap over the base Switch. It's the small things that make life worth living.

Eh, any comparison to previous generations is near pointless imo because, 1: Nintendo, 2 (more importantly): Chip Shortages. That’s a problem that’s not going away anytime soon.

five years is almost a quarter of my life
halfway to destruction

I don’t know why I’m being haunted by those bad old half-life fan fiction videos but someone please help me

Yeah, that doesn't work for me. 7 is unnecessarily long and bloated game. I don't like the games where at one point you forgot what it was about.
I loved it, it felt more like an episodic TV show versus the movies of the other DQs. It had a wildly different structure and that worked really nicely for it.

Also had the best job system ever made in a JRPG.

I’m not very knowledgeable about the whole hardware situation, but if I can chime in, I think one of the main reasons people are looking to next year (or early 2023) for new hardware is that:

A) People are still expecting a hardware upgrade, but an iterative one ala New3DS (even if it’s a much bigger jump than that)

B) People think the base Switch will only keep getting games for around 8 years, so… say 2025

C) Therefore, if there’s an iterative model, it kind of has to be coming in 2022-2023, because otherwise it feels way too late. Why release an upgraded model in 2024 if the true successor is coming in (extending it even a little bit) 2026? That’s way too close together.

So at least to me, off the top of my head and without much evidence or knowledge, it feels like if the new hardware doesn’t come within the next year or so then it probably isn’t coming at all, and Nintendo will just wait it out and release the full-on successor instead.

But I’m not dooming about it or anything, I just find it interesting to think about. Mostly I just want a DLSS Switch as fast as we can get one, lol

A definitely ain't it. for all intents and purposes, it's Switch 2

I’m down. Don’t have expansion pack but would be willing to do for the older consoles (and probably will get expansion pack if they ever allow controller remapping).

Oh shit I need to work on my ST don't I?
The fact that DQVII is a longer game than DQXI is giving me anxiety considering that DQXI took me MONTHS.
Embrace the anxiety.

Like I said above treat it like it's an episodic TV show.

Most definitely, I'd love reading people's impressions of the lesser known games on there!

All I want for Christmas is…no more Dane talk. In more serious news, my wishlist is absolutely bursting with sales, so have to convince myself to hold off on some of these. Had a week off and managed to start and still not finish blossom tales (decent game, think the sequel could really elevate the concepts. A few too many falling platform areas and sound puzzles. And way too many enemies on screen for no reason. Concept is good though).

okay @Dardan Sandiego wins, I'm actually pissed off at you guys

I have never thought that the rumors indicated weak hardware. The rumors have always been for a substantial leap and I have always recognized that. I have doubted the rumors' veracity, the sales potential of their resultant product, and the extent to which it will be supported, but to my memory I have not doubted the power of the described product. In fact, I don't think I'm alone in thinking that's the only thing that has always been clear.

That's without mentioning that 2021 for Switch will still be higher than the peak of the vast majority of consoles and that even with a sizable drop next year we'll still be looking at numbers that would be considered impressive for Year 3 or 4, nevermind Year 6.
I don’t even think it will decline. The lineup for next year might lead to even more record breaking sales. I really don’t think Switch will “decline” until 2023 at the earliest.

"you see, it's the thing you just bought, but 500 dollars and slightly better! exclusive games? eventually! please buy it now."

I feel like you have to at some point decide whether you want to be a meme poster or not.

You wake up and you see the amount of positive cases in Ontario and you act appropriately.......
I have been playing a lot of PS5 lately, and have been able to play Switch just fine. By that, I mean 3O FPS games. It really brings me to the whole "I can't go back to Switch anymore" things we saw on the old place. It just hit me how far people go for console warring, I guess.
The biggest factor of switching between the PS5 and Switch is that the dualsense feels better in the hands for longer gaming sessions. It almost feels like a downgrade going back to the Switch Pro Controller lol

A more powerful handheld is slightly better to the average consumer. I was lazy and stupid about it but my argument there was that it is not a compelling sell to the mass market.

That said, compelling software that sets it apart will of course get it there

Entity help me, I just saw an ad for "Churro Waffles" and I swear I initially read it as "Chrono Waffles." 😩

not to keep covidposting but Ontario is over DOUBLE their previous all-time COVID peak. With 80% vaccination, total population including children.

9,571 new cases today.
Delta peaked around 4,400.

Please be safe and lock down now before it’s too late. This is what happened with moderate care and caution at 80% vaccination.

Anyway I'm sorry I said the Switch was old. I've done a poor job articulating what I feel. I'm going to go try and enjoy Christmas, and I sincerely apologize for bringing down the mood in this thread.

It absolutely is declining from last year in 2021. There's always a chance it can pop back up in 2022 but without new hardware I'm not counting on it personally.

I could start the next case in The Great Ace Attorney today... or I could start another season of my franchise in Super Mega Baseball 3.
Man, that game is quickly becoming my most played game of all time above games like Modern Warfare 2 and RCT2.

It is old though. Or middle aged or whatever. I don't really see why what you said is in any way controversial.

People like to dance around this topic by focusing on semantics and phrasing but not the actual meaning of your post which IMO was perfectly fine and reasonable.

For some reason it's become taboo or something both here and on install base to discuss how they might transition to new hardware in the next couple years. I don't get it.

also omicron is probably already more deeply integrated in the US than we think — there are lots of places that just… don’t seem to report all their COVID cases anymore? Unless I don’t understand what the 0 days are in reporting (v possible). but… COVID doesn’t stop on the weekends. or… every weekday except Tuesday… what is going on with reporting??

plus — from what I heard, don’t have clear stats in this — a lot of areas in the US didn’t actually have testing capacity to detect omicron at first.

the funniest (scarylarious) metric of all this:

I'm really not trying to be mean here but you also have to realize that people aren't just going to assume that you're being "lazy and stupid" whenever it is convenient for you.

Again, you're talking about years plural here when the discussion on the previous page was literally about an announcement pre-E3.

edit: People can feel however they want about the system but what I, and I think @Oregano as well, find a bit irritating is how people take every small thing (like the slight decline in Japanese sales) as irrefutable proof that the announcement of this thing is imminent. It reflects a general attitude towards the system that might not be shared by everyone arguing like this but it's definitely become more prevalent since the announcement of the SwOLED.

Raccoon is talking about the scenario in which Dane launches late next year. Personally I don't think they'd reveal it as early as pre-E3 but I think it's silly to discount the possibility.

Really? Am I just way behind in the conversation? I thought the whole DLSS-4K Switch iteration was what most everyone was still expecting (like the Pro rumors last year)
it is. the hardware needed for DLSS just means that there won't be a small jump in performance.

some folks got really fixated on the "pro vs 2" naming distinction when we've been talking about the same hardware

I thought that was only in the Japan store?
My b you’re right

Btw is there a function to ignore words so it hides any post or thread that include it? I wish I could hide any mention of Dane or succ at this point

Stop actively looking forward to Nintendo milking you with new hardware, no matter what it is it won’t make Namco deliver their games day and date, nor it will make fanboys stop being insufferable in terms of differences in framerate or resolution

You’re going to play BOTW2 and love it. You don’t NEED to spend over 500 dollars for a new console just because some fanboys say it’s objectively unplayable due to the red bar moving in a DF video. Games on Nintendo hardware will always be belittled because now that anyone and their grandma can tell the difference between 30 and 60 fps, fanboys now have a moral argument to advocate Nintendo going third party because apparently this ARCHAIC hardware holds them back from having games that play OBJECTIVELY better. How many of last decade’s standout games even make use of the strongest possible hardware anyway. This sentiment will never fade until Nintendo releases the highest end hardware possible which will never happen. Fuck this noise, let it go, just play the game. They will release their next gen when they are ready. Before they officially announce something it’s simply no use to constantly stress this topic because it simply doesn’t add anything to the discussion besides being disappointed that they didn’t announce something that they had no intention to announce in the first place, or the insufferable “there is no way this game is running on the base Switch”

I wasn't discounting the possibility of a late year release of the Dane. Just the way people argue for it. In fact I'm pretty sure I had one of the more bullish Summer/September 2022 predictions.
