StarTopic Super Mario RPG |ST| Seven Stars, Loco Train Cars

Ha. Which is best goes on a simple cycle. I also have been using a simple cycle, just as a way to keep things even, but since my cycle hasn't synced with the game's if I'd gone the whole way like this I'd have missed every single best option.

Got to Nimbus Land earlier and have had the music on a loop since. This game, if nothing else, is probably a lock for my favorite soundtrack of the year.
I really do think that despite some absolutely phenomenal work pre and post SMRPG, this game remains Shimomura's greatest standalone OST.

It's just so consistently good. Constantly. With creative, earworm material dropping one right after the other... basically nonstop.

And then with this version of the game, she's gone and reworked some of the weaker songs, adding segments to the quick looping ones.

It's really something special. So happy she was able to be a part of this.

I played Paper Mario 64 a few months ago and I find SMRPG to be more difficult than PM, is it only me ?
SMRPG is definitely harder. PM64 is probably the easiest Mario RPG overall. And the special enemies in SMRPG will probably throw first timers for a loop.

I'm on the Sunken Ship right now and this is not the place you want to be when you're jumped by a special enemy lol

Special enemies are overall a fantastic addition, though I wish they were marked more clearly than having a yellow name; a little yellow aura would be nice

And done. 17 hours total (excluding the hour and a half spent softlocked), postgame cleared.

What do I do now?

It feels like the remake punishes you a lot harder for missing battle commands then the original did. This is especially noticeable when super enemies show up and will one deal 80% of your health in one hit if you miss the command.

Yaridovich/Speardovich was a lot easier for me this time around whereas Bundt was easily the hardest boss for me and harder than I ever remember it being in the SNES version. Probably just some idiosyncratic thing. Also the clone has a scan so make sure you get that (hint: the game automatically selects the real one when you're choosing an attack).

Absolutely loving the remake still but I do wish some of the spell animations had more pizzaz. Water Blast's new one just doesn't cut it. Some I get because of epilepsy issues but they still feel a little undercooked.

Wait for the TTYD remake!

I'd forgotten how easily Geno can die in the Bowyer fight. Ended up using quite a few Mushrooms on him as he kept getting close to death!

STOP SPAMMING SLEEP MOVES YOU STUPID MULTIEYE MONSTER AND EAT MARIO & GENO 🤬

Edit: I literally killed him off nothing but aoe's from well timed attacks on the clones before he ate Mario kill me

Modern looking Mario RPG with unique characters, quirky enemies, weird looking toads… this is fucking surreal!
One nice thing with the remake is noticing certain characteristics I could never make out before

Like how Leuko has eyes

You know, I’ve never attempted to play the original - slightly before my time as a gamer. I’ll be getting this some time soon - seems like a cozy holiday game.

Picked up my playthrough today and finished Booster’s Tower and Marrymore. How many flowers did y’all snag on Booster Hill? I’m happy I managed to snag nine.

I pulled 9 as well!

I just did the Axem Rangers, and I somehow just noticed that while they're obviously a power rangers riff, their colors also match the Mario crew: Red is medium build like Mario, Green is tall and thin ala Luigi, Yellow is bigger like Wario, Pink is smaller like Peach, etc. The only one I don't know if it's supposed to match anyone is black.

Holy shit Special Krifit is no joke in Land's End

They're moreso an homage to Chojin Sentai Jetman; 9 times out of 10 if there is a Sentai homage in Japanese media it's a Jetman homage. In Jetman, Yellow was fat and goofy and Black was cool and badass.

I don’t know why I thought the Exp Booster was 50 frog coins when it was 22 iirc. The item formerly known as the Scrooge Ring is 50 and gives you half off FP. In my more recent playthroughs of Mario RPG I give the XP booster to Peach immediately. I never want her to die as she has the best healing spells in the game. No idea how tough the new super bosses are, but getting the XP booster started immediately was also a top goal here.

Also I haven’t really been commenting on the new graphics much and I think that’s because I largely prefer the Super Nintendo graphics, but certain areas like Seaside Town and Yoshi’s Island are super striking with all of the added details.

Since you can swap party members freely in battle and you can stock up on far more healing items, I find Peach isn't in my party all that much. It's easy enough to sub her in for a group therapy and sub her back out. I imagine this'll be especially true late game if you want to go lazy shell armor Peach.

I didn’t realize it didn’t cost a turn. I’m mixing it up a bit this playthrough from my prior one by keeping Geno and Bowser through the Sunken Ship at least. I’ll probably ditch Bowser afterwards.

I’ve stayed spoiler free on the ending of the game. To those who got there, was it as good as the OG games ending? The ending of the OG game is one of my favorite gaming experiences. Please don’t get into specifics tho, I want to be surprised! (Beyond the few seconds I saw spoiled)

I didn’t know with Yaridovich if you don’t let the elder get tickle tortured you get a Flower Box, whoops. The 1 coin I got had me curious lol. Going to try that again.

Also the post battle dialog is new right?

You know a playthrough has gotten real once you get Geno Blast.

Makes sense since the game wants you to get all of Mallow's scans. Would be brutal if you had to wait a round after subbing him in to scan and then waste another turn subbing him out.

Which dialogue?

Which dialogue?
There’s a conversation after Yaridovich where you free the townspeople and Peach and Bowser come out and Bowser states “he’d never hold anyone hostage” and Peach says that just happened a little while ago. Bowser ends the conversation with “The mold in here’s bad for my sensitive nostrils.” I don’t remember it, but maybe there was dialogue there that was altered slightly? Not sure.

Edit: it is new going by this Youtube video I glanced at. You get control of Mario right away in the original version.

Enjoying reading this thread bc I’m not allowing myself to buy this until I clear a few RPGs from my backlog.

First is DQ XI (just made it to act two) then I may reconsider this as a palette cleanser.

Not feeling this one so far. Have tried twice and start falling asleep after ~5min or so. Will give a third try after coffee and during the day.

So far the only complaint I have is that Mario no longer does the peace sign as his victory pose, and as a kid I used to do it in time with him on the beat and now that he doesn't do it I'm finding myself doing it alone completely by habit and it's a little embarrassing to be left hanging by a video game character

Yeah that is new! That stood out to me for sure, I thought I was going crazy.

Not only Mario, but they took peace signs away from Mallow and Peach too 😱

The one thing I do wish was slightly different is Mallow’s level up pose not sharing the same motions as his victory pose - I’m not far enough to see Peach’s level up but Mario and Bowser have different poses for victory and level up so it’s a bit odd that Mallow still has the 😄 and raised arms for both.

There was never a mandate. People took one comment from Tanabe and ran screaming into the hills with it.

There clearly is guidance for how mario characters should/can be used in games, while also allowing for older rerelease to maintain the spirit of the original release. Anyone who thought this game would be changed wasn't paying attention, because we already knew they still wouldn't touch mario RPGs from the 3ds remakes of superstar saga and bowsers inside story, but at the same time it's no coincidence that e.g. all the original characters in mario + rabbids are rabbids and not mario characters.

Guidelines and rules are a thing. The """"mandate"""" people claim destroyed Mario? Absolutely not.

I’m not sure if I ever took on Jinx for three rounds when I first entered Monstro Town, but I beat him without too much fuss. I was curious to see how I’d do afterwards without using Red Essence, but yeah Culex wiped me out quick lol. Eager to circle back later, probably after Bowser’s Castle.

I don’t know what it is about Land’s End, but that’s probably the closest thing to a wall for me in this game. None of the enemies are that tough and there are some cool segments like the sand whirlpools and Belome’s Temple, but it’s always the part of the game I want to do least. Should be smooth sailing to the end now. I’m looking forward to the climb to Nimbus Land and the Volcano up ahead.

Edit: I’m guessing they got rid of gambling in Grate Guy’s casino for the age rating lol. Not much of a casino now haha. You can just play all of the games for free over and over again.

Insiders like Aquamarine confirmed there was a IP quality assurance team established circa 2009. Even ignoring insider chatter, it's clear by the games themselves that rules were implemented for 2nd/3rd parties that prevented:
  1. deviations from uniform designs of existing characters. (e.g. no toads with hair, no creatures with off-brand body types)
  2. the creation of original characters that "touch upon the Mario universe".
The 1st point is evident in remakes like the Superstar Saga and Mario Party Superstars (vs. the original). Whatever the 2nd point means precisely is up in the air, but its affects can clearly be seen in most externally developed spinoffs after.

If you want to say these IP rules aren't a "mandate", sure whatever that's just semantics. Regardless they've have been a creative negative on spinoffs for the last decade. And it's great to see SMRPG be free of any restrictions unlike past remakes; the weird designs really add to the game.

Peace confirmed no longer canon in the Mario universe

Went through the ghost ship yesterday, my favourite part of the game, and was blown away all over again by how great the re-imagined visuals are. Look at these precious lil' creepers:

Working my way through Bean Valley now!

It's so good. All the models still look lumpy and bizarre like their renders.

I dunno what tweaks they made to the enemy ai, but I've seen a lot of people get stuck in loops where the ai spams status moves like sleep or mushroom and there's no way to break out until you have 4 characters and can swap (if you didn't have the right status immune accessory on).

I remember that in the OG game too. Maybe my memory is failing, but I could swear that happened to me in the SNES mini version

You're just arguing semantics: those are literally the same thing.

Regardless, we don't need to turn another mario RPG thread in to this when people should just be enjoying the game for what it is, so I'm sorry for dragging the thread a bit down this path, I'll stop that line of thought here.

They're not.

And if people think the existence of this remake or TTYD next year mean that quality control is dead, they're mistaken.

They're not a mandate in the sense that they weren't conceived to ruin Mario games like you seem to act in every single Mario RPG thread. Nintendo would be daft at this juncture to not have established IP guidelines for Mario that partner companies and licensees have to follow to maintain quality of the Mario brand and IP. This sort of thing is commonplace, and the existence of the SMRPG remake or TTYD next year doesn't mean that those guidelines are dismantled.

If anything, these games were just grandfathered in to an extent. SMRPG characters that were distinctly off model on the SNES look much closer to the standard in the remake.

Just got to the volcano, home stretch of the game now. It's so nice to have the definitive version of a classic on modern hardware.

I don't think the rules "ruined Mario games", but it's absolutely been a creative negative on spinoffs. Some basics IP guidelines obviously make sense, but the current ones are too restrictive and have hurt the games.

It doesn't mean they're dismantled, that's true. But prior remakes (e.g. M&L SS) weren't grandfathered in and had altered designs, so clearly something has changed. They could be loosing up the rules or granting exceptions to remakes now, impossible to say. Either way it's a different treatment. I just hope SMRPG and TTYD HD are successful and show Nintendo people prefer this approach, they're better games untouched like this. Does anyone really wanna live in a world where Fat Yoshi got a design nerf?

I don't think so.

Well, Land's End is literally a big wall, sooooo... :p

I remember being stuck there forever as a kid because I couldn't wrap my head around the whirlpool ants to get to Monstro Town, and then finding where the heck the cliff is after you get the koopa troopas. There are a decent amount of things in this game that are actually kind of tricky for knowing where to go and how to progress, especially for how simple most of the game is.

Have you actually seen the remake's fat Yoshi? As rotund as he is, he's very much more on model than the original.

That's the point. They'll make changes to obviously off-model elements, but they're not going to do something like erase Goombella from existence.
