Pre-Release Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (2024) — Pre-release Discussion Thread

Origami king was my first experience with the series and I thought it was pretty good but I fell off/didn’t finish it and I really had no desire to return to it.

Through convincing (invited me to their NSO family plan) my friends got me to play Paper Mario 64 and I actually had a good time with it. Which is why I’m now looking forward to giving TTYD a chance because I’ve been told its similar to the first one.

Unfortunately never had the opportunity to try the others, hopefully Nintendo ports the rest for me to try them. It’s so jarring how different they are from each other though.
To be honest if you liked Origami King but preferred the original Paper Mario it'd be weird if you didn't like Thousand-Year Door, it's very much a sequel to the original game, tho TOK still shares some DNA with them. Super and Color Splash are worth checking out but your mileage may vary (I like the former a lot but it has huge issues, really don't like the former), Sticker Star I'd really only check out if you're really curious (I personally loath it it lol).

Also in general news my friend and I messed up setting up our European pre-order for TTYD that included the pop-up stage so I can't get that anymore, welp.

oh no, sorry to hear that.

Also yes, Origami king was good, I just have an issue with seeing a game through sometimes. Like I loved Dragon quest 11 but I fell off and had no desire to return to it for the time being Hopefully TTYD can capture me the same way 64 has.

This is my favourite Paper Mario, which I don't think is an unpopular opinion. Actually my ranking would go something like this:

TTYD > SPM > 64 > TOK > CS > SS

This seems to be pretty similar to the common ranking, except swap SPM and 64.

TTYD > 64 > SPM > CS > SS > TOK for me lol Ring battles made the franchise even worse than it was before for me.

Interesting little comparison imo

(In regards to rankings, SS has to be ranked last solely due to the fact that end of chapter bosses can only be killed by a specific sticker you may not have)

I've always seen the modern Paper Mario games like this. Sticker Star set out a new system, Color Splash expanded on it and Origami King further developed it in an exponential sense. What i don't agree is that Origami did something as different as Super did. TOK is still the gameplay established since Sticker Star, unlike Super which is a complete 180 gameplay wise.

So… have we gotten any hint/indication about why Amazon US cancelled pre-orders for TTYD, LM2, and Endless Ocean?

Have y'all seen this?

The "Partner Ring" from those screenshots is a quick swap feature.

Battle theme seems to have multiple variations per area / chapter like Origami King now (can't post a screenshot for this one lol).

For changes, they're sticking with the catgirl boo from the international version, rather than the bunnygirl boo from the original JP version.

This video really drives home the visual improvements. Though the the environments are, regrettably, essentially 1:1, it is clear a lot of effort went into improving the overall visual package and production values through added details (like torn bits of wanted posters floating in the wind at Rogueport), improved camera work, and a lot of new animations.

The partner ring is indeed a partner ring.

Downgrade. Yuji Horii will hear of this.

But more seriously, I wonder if that helps with the parlor's image overseas. edit: Well no, the room is still filled with casino tokens and slot machines and the Boo is just one sprite. Dumb post, disregard.

is this all concept art from the original or remakes? Prime Remastered had both

Just going off of a machine translation of the track list from the jukebox, it seems the soundtrack really is heavily expanded.
Professor Frankly has 3 themes instead of just one, and the one they play is Goombella's theme, which is entirely new!
Also, there's 3 Rogueport themes it seems, as the top 2 selections roughly translate to "Rogueport 2nd Floor" and "Rogueport 3rd Floor". I guess that means the soundtrack will dynamically shift to a different version of the song depending on what section of an area you're in, like Banjo-Kazooie.

Why does Doopliss’ new fridge(?) have a Zonai motif?

Noticed Vivian's hat is animating by switching sprites at a low framerate. I like them combining aspects of CS/TOK's animations with TTYD/Super/SS's puppet animations, really feels like IS is combining the best aspects of both styles of art direction. It's cool!

TOK would be the best of the bunch, if not for the boring battle mechanics. It's still better than all other games bar TTYD, though. Fight me
Yeah but ToK battle mechanics drag it WAAY down. I couldn't even finish the game because it got so tedious and boring. I loved everything else, unfortunately wasn't enough to finish it

With previews reportedly coming tomorrow, I'm thinking/hoping perhaps we get the English version of this overview trailer tomorrow, too.

I really, really want a NG+ mode. It’s one of the things I’m always wanting from Nintendo these days, but they just don’t seem to believe in it anymore, which is ironic considering they were probably the very first to do it with SMB!

Either way, I’m looking forward to playing through this again a month from now. I can’t believe it has been 20 years.

True and Zelda had 2nd Quest then Miyamoto made an RPG Zelda sidescroller that predates souls games/castlevania types and said he'd never do that again IIRC

I think Nintendo found success in simplicity, and they stray far away from stuff like this.

To be completely honest I can't be hyped by the option of the original soundtrack because of how all the remixes seem to completely hit it out of the park, and I was initially worried that some of the songs wouldn't be as good.
It'll be nice to have the option but I cannot see myself ever using it, unless maybe the GC badge does something a bit more than music.

Yep. Zelda had it too! In fact, the last game I can even think of that Nintendo implemented it in was Ocarina of Time on 3DS since they added Master Quest as an unlockable, which is technically a version of NG+ imo.

It just feels like something that a lot of their games would benefit from. Who wouldn’t want to start a NG+ run of Tears of the Kingdom with all of your powered up costumes and weapons and such available at the very beginning?! Just as an example.

So yeah, something like TTYD that would let you take your leveled up party and play again would be awesome. Even better if it was akin to Final Fantasy 16 where there’s a harder mode available that lets you carry your stuff over and even increase your party’s levels further would be even better!

I know I’m asking for a mountain and not expecting to get a single thing, but it’s just stuff that I wish Nintendo did as it would give me a great reason to replay their games again right away instead of years and years from now when might get an itch to revisit it.

New OC near the trouble center, perhaps a QoL update? Hopefully allows you to access troubles from more than one area

Presumably, as there already is an NPC running the Trouble Center that you can find if you go around the back of the building.

english overview trailer New
Chapter 2 battle theme at the very start of the video. So glad this is something they've brought back from TOK.

Also English overview trailer:

EDIT: Vooks' preview confirms the GameCube Badge is an original soundtrack toggle:

Early on, I purchased a badge to toggle between the new, fancy-sounding remade music and the GameCube original tunes.

Some examples of area specific battle themes in longer preview videos:

Also a description of the accessibility features from the IGN preview:

However, Nintendo did add a fair share of quality-of-life improvements that should make this an even more welcoming RPG for players of all ages. This includes adding a partner ring that allows you to change party members with a button click instead of a visit to the menu, a gameplay hint system from the wonderful Goombella you can access at any time, and new entries in the Sound and Art Galleries that you can unlock by collecting Shine Sprites and Star Pieces.

There will also be new NPCs to meet along the way that will help you on your journey. One of these will be Rogueport’s Battle Master, a Toad who will not only tell you battle secrets in hopes you will become a legendary fighter, but who will also let you jump into a danger-free battle to practice all your abilities and timing-based attacks. Considering you can cause more damage and prevent a world of pain with a well-timed button press, this can be a valuable resource to those who need it.

Ian Foomus, the “infamous information mouse,” has also appeared in Rogueport at the Trouble Center and will be there to get you back on track if you are having a tough time with any of Paper Mario’s sidequests, some of which can get a bit confusing and involved.

A new badge will also join the collection of the over 80 found in the original, and it just so happens to be a Nostalgic Tunes one that will let players experience the music of the GameCube title instead of the newly recreated tracks made specifically for the Switch version. If you are unfamiliar with how the badge system works, it’s not so unlike the one found in Super Mario Bros. Wonder where you can equip certain ones to give you advantages (or disadvantages!) in battle.

Area-specific battle themes is fucking rad, that was genuinely my #1 most requested addition after Origami King completely nailed it. I figured it was a pipe dream so I'm glad it made it in.

Getting concept art from the original for stuff like Doopliss is huge honestly. Also glad to see there's a music toggle. Some of the remixes are good but I know I'll crave the more synth-heavy OG at times.

Seems like most of the other changes are QoL. I'm fine with that. Seems to be a very neat little package for TTYD, which is all I really needed. Excited to pick this one up.
