Rumour NSO GB/C and GBA emulators allegedly leaked

Saying more systems are coming to NSO is like a low bar. But good job patting yourself on the back, I guess.
I remember last year when insiders were talking about GB and GBC coming to NSO, until the controller patent when talk promptly shifted to N64 instead.
Except all talk about N64 coming to NSO predated the patent filing...

Between that story that ran about GB potentially releasing soon (I forget who that originated from) and the patent filing, GB did dominate the conversation. I don't blame people who forgot N64 came up before then. Still, not cool to make passive aggressive posts due to a messy memory...

If that were the case I'd apologize, but this user has targeted me several times in numerous threads over the last several months. Their intent was to discredit.

Just in case it wasn't clear, I meant their post was passive aggressive, not yours.

Hmmm. Maybe I should've just left it at aggressive lol.

Gotcha. I had read it as my time-frame correction being the "messy memory" passive aggression.
Understandable; my phrasing wasn't great.

While N64 got a little lost after the GB story ran, it was definitely still discussed prior to the patent.

Correct me if I'm wrong but this is a list of 43 titles published by Nintendo on GB/C, maybe I'm missing a few lol (like Wars titles):

  • Super Mario Land
  • Super Mario Land 2
  • Wario Land
  • Wario Land 2
  • Wario Land 3
  • Zelda Link Awakening
  • Zelda Oracle of Seasons/Ages
  • Metroid II
  • Kid Icarus 2
  • X
  • Tetris
  • Wave Race
  • Dr.Mario (with NES this is a little redundant?)
  • Pokemon Red/Blue
  • Pokémon Yellow
  • Pokemon Gold/Silver

  • Donkey Kong Country (SNES downport, redundant?)
  • Kirby Tilt N Rumble
Third party is hard to guess would be happy if we get Megaman 1-5 and Extreme 1/2, some Rare titles, Harvest Moon, etc

And this is Nintendo published titles on GBA, there are 54 titles:

  • Super Mario Advance 1 (SNES port, redundant?)
  • Super Mario Advance 2 (SNES port, redundant?)
  • Super Mario Advance 3 (SNES port, redundant?)

The list goes to 41 if we exclude japan only titles, then to 33 if they are not planning to add SNES ports. (I think Mario Advance will add them)

For third parties is difficult to guess, GBA recieve good support from third parties so maybe we can get titles that got on WiiU VC like Megaman & Bass, Onimusha Tactics, Sonic Advance 1/2/3, Rayman Advance/3, Konami Crazy Racers, Klonoa 1/2, Drill Dozer 1/2, etc, or maybe nothing lol.
Quite a lot of GB/GBC games missing, but I think the ones missing are the large number of titles Nintendo published on the system either only in certain regions, or which they published without being the license holder for the game. The GBA list is mostly complete. I'll see if I can dig out a GB/GBC list from somewhere.

The Cotton Anthology had a decent Saturn emulator. Overall it has good compatibility, but it suffers from input lag.

Other than the fan-translations, I'd really miss the fan-colorization hacks. Mario Land 2 DX and Metroid II DX look astonishingly good in colors, and I can't wait for Kaeru DX.
Yeah, I wish they made one without input lag.

While I’d much prefer they do Golden Sun remakes, I’ll take what I can get here. Two of the best RPGs ever created. I got so much enjoyment out of those games. I’m ready to give them another go!

Also hopeful the GBA Donkey Kong Countrys make it. Aside from one pretty big omission in DKC 3, they’re excellent remakes and actually better than the originals with the extra content and such.

What's the big omission?

This is an edited list which removed titles Nintendo definitely don't have the rights to. The actual list of GB plus GBC titles Nintendo published runs close to 150 games, but I don't have that list anywhere. Just this edited one and I'm not entirely sure what decisions I made when editing it!

I have tried to follow the story, but didn't find something about it, is it there any info as to where these files are originating from?

I think I have read that they are not part from the leaked documents from some months ago, and that the files were extracted from a Nintendo Switch unit. The assumption is that they could have been stolen from an external Nintendo partner (like Panasonic Vietnam) or something like that?

is this legit? I really hope it is, lot of gems are locked on GBA, the chance to play it again for a fair price would be dope. F-Zero Maximun Velocity with online multiplater would be Lit

So it apparently the emulators support random matchmaking and it just dawned on me, Fire Emblem Sacred Stones has a multiplayer game mode!

It's an incredibly early iteration of the emulator circa 2018; it loads the game and the preset settings and that's it, no UI or ability to change those settings while the game is running. That's why there are multiple variants of the few games there; they have different settings or a different region.

I imagine they made something more efficient for themselves not long after this. At least i'd hope so!

Hagi could theoretically run other games, and supports hardware features Sunshine does not use (chances are it was made long before 3D All-Stars in the first place); but nobody except Nintendo / NERD would be able to do it because the game runs with recompiled code created by Nintendo's own internal tools. That's why you haven't seen any modifications to 3D All-Stars just swapping out the .dol for a different game; isn't that simple.
To me the fact that Sunshine/Galaxy had to be partially recompiled, as well as patched to smooth out the framerate in the case of Sunshine, seems to suggest the base switch is not quite powerful enough to run emulated Gamecube games both at higher resolutions and at full speed. Not 100% sure on that so if people know more than me please fill me in but I'd imagine they'd wait for the Switch's successor to get GameCube (and possibly Wii though that's even trickier with no sensor bar support) games on NSO.

Personally I've thought for a little while that GC/Wii, if they come to a subscription, will only come when new hardware is out. Perhaps Nintendo add additional features to the hardware - beyond more processing power - to make emulation of a wider set of systems more feasible.

The GameBoy family were the systems I expected on Switch, not only because of the relative ease of emulation, but also because of the sheer number of games Nintendo could begin to dole out. GB/GBC could end up with 90 plus games, like NES, while GBA could end up in the 50 plus range like SNES.

Storage space may also be an issue on current Switch. NES, SNES, and even N64 have pretty small ROM sizes, and since they all download to the system directly, it works out well, but if they took a similar approach with Gamecube the filesize could get pretty big pretty fast and I doubt they'd want like 80% of the 32 GB of default storage being taken up just by the online apps

What's the big omission?

The changed the way the credits work in the GBA version due to space issues on the cartridge or something. So you don’t have Dixie rolling down the cliffs taking picture and stuff like the original. Not the biggest deal, but it was missed. Did, however, get a brand new world! So I guess balances out.

The music in the game was also redone and changed. So that can go either way. Eveline Fischer did the original DKC 3 music while David Wise composed the GBA version.

Saying more systems are coming to NSO is like a low bar. But good job patting yourself on the back, I guess.
I remember last year when insiders were talking about GB and GBC coming to NSO, until the controller patent when talk promptly shifted to N64 instead.
Nate's podcast on N64 on NSO came out a day before the N64 FCC confidentiality filing, and would have been recorded earlier than that. When his episode was released it seemed like he was the odd one out considering Nintendolife, Eurogamer, etc. were claiming GB/GBC were coming really soon, and folks were convinced GB/GBC would be coming before N64.

I also recall Nate and MVG talking about 3rd party platforms coming long before we had any indication of Genesis.

I know who MVG is, but who is this?
LuigiBlood is big on Nintendo archival/preservation, and does a lot of datamining of the NSO apps/reporting on issues or quirks of official Nintendo emulation, on top of doing some emulation work with 64DD and Satellaview stuff.

Would love to play the Oracles and Minish Cap. However, with the current state of F-Zero X I'm not currently bursting with goodwill. :p

Ahh, the N64 controller FCC filing. I love that after the SNES controller filing leaked the unmistakable SNES controller shape, they tried to hide the N64 controller by just drawing two big rectangles. And we still figured it out based on label location and dimensions.

Oh man online four swords multiplayer!

The only problem with GC is the number of games. There is only a handful of games that I can think of that would make me want a sub.
To each there own but look at the list below.
Gamecube had a much stronger first party library that seems to be really under estimated. Off the top of my head:

-Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance
-Smash Bros. Melee
-Starfox Adventures
-Luigi’s Mansion
-Paper Mario and the The Thousand-Year Door
-Super Mario Sunshine
-Zelda: The Wind Waker
-Pikmin
-Pikmin 2
-Starfox Assault
-Zelda: Collector’s Edition
-Metroid Prime
-Metroid Prime 2: Echoes
-Animal Crossing
-Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour
-Mario Baseball
-Mario Strikers
-Geist
-Battalion Wars
-Mario Party 4
-Mario Party 5
-Mario Party 6
-Mario Party 7
-Zelda: Twilight Princess
-Zelda: Four Swords Adventures
-Custom Robo
-Chibi-Robo
-F-Zero GX
-Kirby Air Ride
-Eternal Darkness

I’m sure there’s plenty I’m missing here still, but that’s a pretty darn good lineup of games for a GCN NSO App. Throw in some hopeful third party stuff like Viewtiful Joe, Resident Evil 4, Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg, Sonic games, Baten Kaitos, Skies of Arcadia, etc. and idk what’s not to like.
Thank you for doing the dirty work. I want these games so bad. Just need to buy a used GameCube at this point.

The GBC/GBA Hamtaro games were so good. Basically a genre of their own.

I think I only own one game from a past generation that I'm confident will never make it to this service or get any port/remaster ever:

Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events (GBA)

I wonder if Nintendo would even bother to re-release Wave Birds for a GC NSO or just make more wired controllers and more of those USB adapters for Switch

(I'm only slightly opposed to new Wavebirds unless they can somehow provide replacement receivers for the original controllers where the signal quality has been degrading so badly)

I never played the GBA version, but listening from Youtube the music looks worse than on the SNES. The art is also way worse. Curious about the new levels though.

NERD aren't like the rest of Nintendo. They're a skunkworks team of hackers, this is exactly the kind of thing that they would use; especially since they wouldn't be able to easily pull old GB/GBA flash cart hardware out of Nintendo's archives since they're based in Paris (France).

EZ Flash carts are just much more accessible for them, and they're generally better and more convinient hardware to use than those old 90s/early 2000s official flash carts anyway; since they can hold so much more data.

Give us the emulatooooorrrrs, Nintendo

Years of demanding Wario Land games on the Switch potentially going to pay off at some point in the next few years

Thanks for sharing, this is personally the most exciting insight from this thread (the lower tweet):

I hope that the Switch GBA emulator has the same per-pixel motion blur effect that the Wii U VC emulator had... That was the best thing about it! I've never seen a GBA screen emulated so well before the Wii U VC!

This is the thing that homebrew emulators never get right; the colours are always washed out and they never properly emulate the slow screen refresh for the "flicker transparancy" effects.

LCD Persistence is a toggle in this build; can't say for certain if it remains in the final but it was there in 2020.

Interesting.

Have you noticed that there is supposed to be more NES games, all third party? Tetris, Megaman, Pac Man... i also noticed Contra, which i have huge nostalgia for it! Let's hope it's true.
Check the previous page for my slightly informed speculation on that NES NSO build. To add on further though:

This build is dated to October 2019, but contains every NES game that was released from December 2019 to May 2021; so they prepare this stuff far ahead of time clearly. Eliminator Boat Duel, Fire 'n Ice, Nightshade, Ninja JaJaMaru-kun, Rygar, The Immortal, Crystalis, Journey to Silius, S.C.A.T. and Shadow of the Ninja. That'd leave these 16 games still unaccounted for:
  • Nintendo
    • Kung-Fu
    • Tetris
  • Capcom
    • Mega Man
    • Mega Man 2
    • Mega Man 3
    • Mega Man 4
    • Mega Man 5
    • Mega Man 6
  • Konami
    • Adventure Island
    • Castlevania
    • Castlevania II: Simon's Quest
    • Lode Runner
    • Super C
  • Bandai Namco
    • Galaga
    • Pac-Man
  • Tozai Games

What ISN'T here are all of the games that have released this year so far; EarthBound Beginnings, Dig Dug II and Mappy Land. That last NES update had evidence of them doing a lot of work internally since the prior update in May 2021, and this leaked build makes me all the more confident in that seeing as all the content before then had been done well over a year prior. A lot of people seem to think NES and SNES updates will be dying down, but if anything i'd say they might be ramping up a bit more going forward.

Interesting.

Have you noticed that there is supposed to be more NES games, all third party? Tetris, Megaman, Pac Man... i also noticed Contra, which i have huge nostalgia for it! Let's hope it's true.
I wonder if 3rd parties want that Nintendo money once the initial wave of sales for their own collections die off. Like idk how many people who wanted the 1st Castlevania collection haven’t bought it already at this point.

So why not finally put it on NSO and get the extra little bit of revenue from Nintendo? You could say the same about Contra or whatever collection insert here.

Could it be that Nintendo has decided finally now that most of 1st party stuff is out to pay for these titles?

Didn't saw your post before; didn't noticed the part the build is of 2019... i wonder why there are a lot of games there from that date that haven't been released.
Added a little bit more explaination to that post. I wouldn't take the presence of those games as a guarantee that they'll be added eventually, but it isn't impossible.

yeah. some of those are pretty weird since they're already out on many platforms including switch in collections, not sure why nintendo would go after them to have them on NSO or why the publishers would agree to that.

Tetris (GB), Tetris (NES), Tetris DX (GBC) were all first-party published and developed (R&D1). The exact team made Dr. Mario right after. It's why they felt compelled to make Tetris DS in-house as well.

Obviously the licensing is BPS/Tetris Company.

Seeing how Nintendo is all in on the Expansion pass. I expect all other console apps to be expansion pass going forward.

Can’t see even GB and GBC come to the base price tier
As long as they're not outright killing the base plan, they need some bones to throw at those subscribers. And 1989 grayscale games are some of the least valued and most numerous bones they have sitting around.
Could you imagine a scenario where this “extra time” so to speak, is being used to bolster the launch lineup? Or will it continue to be a trickled release schedule?
It's not like the trickling was an unavoidable accident. They want there to continue to be new things to interest people beyond initial launch.

What's interesting is that a good chunk of the game have unique blurbs written up for them in that build.

Descriptions in multiple languages:
  • Mega Man 1-6 (and their SP versions)
  • Castlevania
Descriptions in only one language:
  • Adventure Island
  • Castlevania II
  • Lode Runner
  • Spelunker
  • Super C
No descriptions (dummy text or missing string):
  • Galaga
  • Kung-Fu
  • Pac-Man
  • Tetris

Don't take this as a solid ranking of likelihood for each game releasing though; some of the games that did end up releasing were missing a description in this build too. The games published by Piko Interactive actually have the wrong publishers listed in this build too (lists their original publishers instead).
