Rumour NSO GB/C and GBA emulators allegedly leaked

For Pokรฉmon fans, there is a โ€œPokรฉmon - Tradeโ€ option in the GBA emulator right above the three Golden Sun options, so that could hint/confirm the GB & GBA mainline Pokรฉmon games coming to NSO
That appears to be for Pokรฉmon Pinball Ruby & Sapphire โ€” but Iโ€™d truly love it if we got mainline games

Also if these are ready to drop this year, Iโ€™m definitely calling September and not June

A couple of false claims there. Buying directly from the eshop through your CC or adding a gift card wonโ€™t work.

However, buying directly from the Nintendo Store website will download games to your 3DS. And if you linked your account with NSO, youโ€™ll share a wallet. So while you canโ€™t buy directly through the 3DS with your CC or by adding funds, if you have your account links, you can use your linked wallet if you have funds in it or add funds to it through the Switch.

But the easiest way is to just go to the website.

Oh sh*t. If they actually release the Final Fantasy GBA ports then there won't be any need to get the Pixel Remasters since the former actually has stuff like extra dungeons and story elements.
LOL

Square wants you to pay 20 bucks per game and youโ€™ll like it!

Iโ€™m thinking GB/C and GBA launch at the same time, with GBA locked behind the Expansion Pack. Could be a June Direct shadowdrop.

I predict (based on nothing but feeling) there will not be any corresponding hardware (controllers, etc) for these. The next NSO Classic Controller will be PC Engine when that releases in 2023.
youโ€™re telling me we wonโ€™t get a comically large GBA shell to slide the Switch into?!

but yeah I donโ€™t expect that either

if they end up doing something, itโ€™s gonna be fascinating no matter what

i.e. controllers shaped like the GB / GBA, or Wii U gamepad screen beaming tech in a little pocket pal

the impossibilities are endless (and also ridiculous)

There was trading in Pokemon Pinball?

either that or the bottom right corner is both making (correct) assumptions about me and being super rude

Despite appearing on the standalone Classic consoles, SE hasn't played ball with FF on NSO thus far. I wouldn't expect that to change.

theyโ€™ll still sell out at $30-$50 and go for 3x that on eBay.
The scalping of these confuses me. They only ever sell out temporarily. 3/4 are currently available, and IIRC N64 should be back soon.

That was just a Pokedex thing, and transferred entries were still distinct from normally obtained ones (see https://m.bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Game_Link_Cable). There are testing screenshots specifically from the mainline games, but keep in mind that NERD creates and tests things that Nintendo never uses frequently.

While Iโ€™d much prefer they do Golden Sun remakes, Iโ€™ll take what I can get here. Two of the best RPGs ever created. I got so much enjoyment out of those games. Iโ€™m ready to give them another go!

Also hopeful the GBA Donkey Kong Countrys make it. Aside from one pretty big omission in DKC 3, theyโ€™re excellent remakes and actually better than the originals with the extra content and such.

I wonder if Nintendo just views those as redundant with the SNES games around. They never put them on the Wii U VC which had GBA games. They never even put up the GBC remake of DKC1 on the 3DS eShop.

Just realized that with Metroid II and Fusion in NSO that would mean you can play all Metroid main history titles on the Switch , even if in Metroid 2 case it misses the superior version in Samus Returns (we need a remaster of it cโ€™mon Nintendo ๐Ÿ˜ข). This is โ€˜newsโ€™ because Wii U lacked Metroid II this would be the first time all main games are on the same platform.
This may be the plan from the start:

Iโ€™m not sure why they wouldnโ€™t, but that definitely wouldnโ€™t be the reason why since they did have the Super Mario Advance games on the Virtual Console, and theyโ€™re less of a remake than the DKC games.

I may be completely wrong in this, but I believe Rare may have some ownership of their DKC games, likely the code. So even though Nintendo owns the franchise, characters, music, etc., they still have to negotiate with Rare to do any type of re-release.

Seeing how Nintendo is all in on the Expansion pass. I expect all other console apps to be expansion pass going forward.

Canโ€™t see even GB and GBC come to the base price tier

This is part of why I am excited for the long term prospects of the NSO service. The more systems that come online means there will be more complete histories of Nintendo franchises that are accessible on the Switch and future Nintendo platforms.

I can't see GB/C to be an attractive proposition to be in the expansion pass. GBA however can provide more value in expansion pass imo.

Correct me if I'm wrong but this is a list of 43 titles published by Nintendo on GB/C, maybe I'm missing a few lol (like Wars titles):

  • Super Mario Land
  • Super Mario Land 2
  • Wario Land
  • Wario Land 2
  • Wario Land 3
  • Zelda Link Awakening
  • Zelda Oracle of Seasons/Ages
  • Metroid II
  • Kid Icarus 2
  • X
  • Tetris
  • Wave Race
  • Dr.Mario (with NES this is a little redundant?)
  • Pokemon Red/Blue
  • Pokรฉmon Yellow
  • Pokemon Gold/Silver
  • Pokรฉmon Crystal
  • Pokรฉmon Pinball
  • Donkey Kong 94
  • DK Land 1

  • Donkey Kong Country (SNES downport, redundant?)
  • Kirby Tilt N Rumble
Third party is hard to guess would be happy if we get Megaman 1-5 and Extreme 1/2, some Rare titles, Harvest Moon, etc

And this is Nintendo published titles on GBA, there are 54 titles:

  • Super Mario Advance 1 (SNES port, redundant?)
  • Super Mario Advance 2 (SNES port, redundant?)

  • Pokรฉmon Ruby/Sapphire Pinball
  • Polarium Advance
  • Game & Watch Gallery 4
  • F-Zero Climax (japan-only)
The list goes to 41 if we exclude japan only titles, then to 33 if they are not planning to add SNES ports. (I think Mario Advance will add them)

For third parties is difficult to guess, GBA recieve good support from third parties so maybe we can get titles that got on WiiU VC like Megaman & Bass, Onimusha Tactics, Sonic Advance 1/2/3, Rayman Advance/3, Konami Crazy Racers, Klonoa 1/2, Drill Dozer 1/2, etc, or maybe nothing lol.

Correct. GBA simply wasn't at the same point in pipeline as GB/GBC/N64/Genesis.

GB/GBC finished testing early 2021. N64/Genesis finished a few months later. GBA was not at that stage when the info was reported last summer.
Could you imagine a scenario where this โ€œextra timeโ€ so to speak, is being used to bolster the launch lineup? Or will it continue to be a trickled release schedule?

NSO already has Super Mario All-Stars and all the same games in their original NES forms; there's no reason to pass on the Mario Advance games at the very least since they all add new content; ALttP too seeing as Four Swords would be a HUGE thing to push online multiplayer with. Less sure about the DKC ports, they have some new stuff too but there's the extra hurdle with anything Rare and the SNES versions are pretty definitive even without those additions; no harm in it if they can make it happen though.

Speaking of ports though, you've missed a few Game Boy Color exclusives on your list, like Super Mario Bros. Deluxe and Donkey Kong Country 2001. I could see the latter being skipped but there's no way SMBDX is.

Yeah this list is missing some GBC only titles. On top of my hand:

Super Mario Bros Deluxe
Kirby Tilt n Tumble
Donkey Kong Country (a downport of the original DKC, of of the early "miracle ports")
Warlocked
Mickey's Racing Adventure (this game was really good)

Nintendo also had a deal with Disney to make games of animated classics, such as Alice in Wonderland, Beauty and the Beast and Little Mermaid, all published by Nintendo in every region. If Nintendo manages to re-license them from Disney, we might see them on NSO.

Thanks both of us, I try to avoid licence titles so no Disney or Hamtaro. But forget about SMB DX.

Hopefully DKC3 GBA gets added so people get access to the superior soundtrack

Unless third parties can get on board without ridiculous licensing fees, it will be dripped.

Honestly, I think it was for Transfer Pak functionality. Otherwise, I don't see why they sat on GB/GBC for as long as they did. Unless GB/GBC is going to be positioned as a replacement platform for NES/SNES seeing as though releases for that hardware has been minimal over the last 12 months.

It feels like releases for NES and SNES are picking up again if anything, seeing as February and March introduced some relatively high-profile games (EarthBound, Dig Dug, Mappy, Harvest Moon). The March update to the NES app in particular showed some interesting signs of internal activity too. Depending on how GB and GBA are positioned I could see NES and SNES recieving updates alongside them for some time.

The build of the NES app also leaked alongside these GB/GBA emulators would be more interesting if it wasn't so out of date (again, 2019). Can't write off the posibility of any of these games coming to the service eventually though; Ninja JaJaMaru-kun was here, in October 2019, but was only added to the service in May 2021.

Those Mega Man games all have SP versions set up too. They're all the same concept; starts you at the boss rush of that respective game with everything maxed out. Some of them have text descriptions written up for them though, so that might be the most curious part.

Not just but Kirby gets filled in nicely too (especially the Dark Matter trilogy), as does 2D Zelda, and Wario Land in its entirety. Probably some other things Iโ€™m forgetting.

GB/GBC/GBA is a big effinโ€™ deal. @LoneRanger did a great service assembling that list. Although you dropped a few titles king: Game & Watch Gallery 4 & and the third F-Zero game (Japan-only) for GBA.

Do any of the leaks show how multiplayer will work? All the current NSO systems are home consoles where itโ€™s easy to add multiplayer and the online just makes it so a friend is player 2-4. Online would mean a simulated link cable. Would it show both screens? Let you switch?

I hope not I still need Mario rpg

In the builds we have it goes split-screen and shows all players on one screen, yes. In the GBA app they were even doing tests for random matchmaking online instead of just playing with friends.

Whether or not it stays that way and all those features make it into the final release is not something we could know right now. Online link cable emulation is very much a done deal though; they have it in working order.

The fact the Game Boy emulator is split into seperate applications is unusual, Nintendo did the exact opposite for 3DS Virtual Console. Creating a simple menu screen if the wrapper application detects multiple NES roms in it's folder. Which makes more logical sense for testing.

Also, the EZflash thing most likely doesn't mean it's fake. Just that it was easier to test vs. digging through Nintendo's archives to find actual dev hardware.
There's also reportedly a few homebrew roms in there as well, such as the 180p test suite. alongside a few official internal test roms.
unknown.png

This is entirely unrelated to any Gigaleak; the files came from a dumped EDEV Switch unit, which appeared to be wiped but these files were recoverable from the NAND; and due to the date of these files I wouldn't take them as a sign of anything happening soon.
Notably, this isn't even the first build leaked thanks to an edev board getting out there. It's the origin of a Nintendo Labo prototype, as well as at least one build of Yooka-Laylee.
I hope they release more than just the hits.

Oh man, the Iridion games.
I hope theyโ€™re doing deals to make this great.
Iridion is actually on Steam, surprisingly.

The publisher is listed as Majesco, who had all of their IPs acquired by Ziggurat Interactive if i remember correctly.

It's an incredibly early iteration of the emulator circa 2018; it loads the game and the preset settings and that's it, no UI or ability to change those settings while the game is running. That's why there are multiple variants of the few games there; they have different settings or a different region.

I imagine they made something more efficient for themselves not long after this. At least i'd hope so!

Iโ€™d love GameCube too, but I do think GC emulation is a tall order for the current Switch hardware. Sunshine on 3D All Stars was probably a custom emulator for that one game, where NSO would require a more one-size-fits-all deal. Though maybe Iโ€™m wrong? Iโ€™m not the smartest with this stuff haha
Hagi could theoretically run other games, and supports hardware features Sunshine does not use (chances are it was made long before 3D All-Stars in the first place); but nobody except Nintendo / NERD would be able to do it because the game runs with recompiled code created by Nintendo's own internal tools. That's why you haven't seen any modifications to 3D All-Stars just swapping out the .dol for a different game; isn't that simple.

All I want or care about is GameCube. When that happens I will purchase any Nintendo online service they offer me.
Seriously. The one catalogue I want the most is the one they refuse to give.

Iโ€™d rather anything from GameCube era onwards get HD remasters and such and released that way rather than on a service like NSO

The only problem with GC is the number of games. There is only a handful of games that I can think of that would make me want a sub.

Gamecube had a much stronger first party library that seems to be really under estimated. Off the top of my head:

-Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance
-Smash Bros. Melee
-Starfox Adventures
-Luigiโ€™s Mansion
-Paper Mario and the The Thousand-Year Door
-Super Mario Sunshine
-Zelda: The Wind Waker
-Pikmin
-Pikmin 2
-Starfox Assault
-Zelda: Collectorโ€™s Edition
-Metroid Prime
-Metroid Prime 2: Echoes
-Animal Crossing
-Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour
-Mario Baseball
-Mario Strikers
-Geist
-Battalion Wars
-Mario Party 4
-Mario Party 5
-Mario Party 6
-Mario Party 7
-Zelda: Twilight Princess
-Zelda: Four Swords Adventures
-Custom Robo
-Chibi-Robo
-F-Zero GX
-Kirby Air Ride
-Eternal Darkness

Iโ€™m sure thereโ€™s plenty Iโ€™m missing here still, but thatโ€™s a pretty darn good lineup of games for a GCN NSO App. Throw in some hopeful third party stuff like Viewtiful Joe, Resident Evil 4, Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg, Sonic games, Baten Kaitos, Skies of Arcadia, etc. and idk whatโ€™s not to like.

Canโ€™t wait for them to sell an OG GBA shell that disables your backlight but has a worm light or an SP sheโ€™ll that disables your audio jack unless you buy a dongle.

But people told me I lied about that.

And to be clear: GB/GBC was done testing last year. GBA had not yet entered that phase. GBA could have been an active project since the original information.
Saying more systems are coming to NSO is like a low bar. But good job patting yourself on the back, I guess.
I remember last year when insiders were talking about GB and GBC coming to NSO, until the controller patent when talk promptly shifted to N64 instead.
