I 100%ed Samus Returns but I didn't really feel like it for Dread. IDK, I've never approached Metroid for 100%-ing them but just do all the puzzles I can along the way and then just doing something else if they're out of my league. I think I ended Dread at around 90% or so.

the reason i got to 95% was the final boss being too tough, i thought getting max health would make things easier. in the end it ended up being a bit too easy with full health, lol.

Yeah Some of the shinespark puzzels are near impossible. I still have a few to go but I do not know if I have the determination. 😅
there's one where you have to chain like 5 back to back shinesparks. i had no idea you could even chain them, the tutorial does not mention it.

are you talking about the slope puzzle?
If so, the hints that pop up on loads tell you that you will switch to speed boost if you spark towards a slope.

I have to find the determination to beat the last boss first. I finally got to second phase last night.

I’m not the only one who thinks Zero Mission’s shinespark puzzles were much more evil than Dread’s right?

I really feel a disconnect to people complaining about the ones in Dread. I was waiting for them to get as hard as ZM’s based on the “they’re so hard” impressions, but they never did. (And I’m thankful for that lol)

Right?! Those were real console/controller snappers. Dread's are piss easy in comparison.

I think the reason for that is you can toggle speed booster and that the game is more forgiving with how far you have to run to gain shinespark. You can also hold spark for longer.

The best discovery I've had so far is that power bombs destroy the big yellow orb in the final boss fight. I was actually trying to see if they just did more damage, so I was pleasantly surprised that they also did that. Made that battle a lot simpler.

This might be a stupid question but does anyone know what that silver question mark means when you check Samus' stats?
It says (? 2/2) on mine.

I think it was added with the recent update?

It appears if you get
more ammunition for the power bombs
It was there since the beginning.

Oh really? I must've missed it before, which is weird since I only just now started noticing it. XD
Thank you for your swift reply!

I didn't find the final boss especially difficult once I figured out how to dodge most of the attacks. What I couldn't quite figure out though was how to parry and make it trigger the second phase. I'm still not convinced I understand why sometimes I'd parry like twice and he'd go to the second phase whereas others took like 10 attempts. I must've been doing something wrong but could never quite figure out what.

It's something I tried after some attempts based on its form and color and the fact that this sequence was harder than any other boss phases.
So there had to be a solution.

Decided to try a 0% run. I think a lot of difficulty will come from trying to avoid upgrades at first. Trying on normal, so hopefully I don't Game Over too much.

There were some upgrades I had to turn into a Morph Ball and jump over. Overall, though, the vast majority are easily skipped.

That is good news. Playing a little last night, I am beginning to worry about some bosses.

The game will turn into a no hit run pretty fast. Even regular enemies will take an entire tank when they hit you later in the game.

The always enjoyable Retro Warriors podcast has a new episode dedicated to Metroid Dread this week. It’s the second time they’ve focused on a new game in the last two years (the other was Actraiser Renaissance last week).

(To be fair, I always listen with Smart Speed enabled in Overcast. Metroid discussion starts about 20 minutes in, after talk about N64/Genesis NSO stuff and Alan Wake.)

After a lot of struggling I finally made it to the final boss, but honestly I don't see myself beating it anytime soon. 😅
So I'm not sure whether to put the game aside for now, or just keep trying in vain.

I was able to get through the other bosses since the fights are relatively short, but the final one seems longer compared to them and I can't handle long tense situations so I feel really stuck rip.

So, finished the hard mode in 03:34 hours with 50% item rate or so, after completing the game on normal mode like 4 times.

Once you know the game very well, is not that hard.

However, doubt I can speed run the game. I have no abilities like the ones on the videos.

My second playthrough was much faster and much easier than my first, despite being on hard mode. Just understanding the way the game mechanics work and what the boss patterns are makes even the final boss quite manageable.

I keep debating if I want to do a serious speedrun attempt. But pseudo-wave hurts my hands after I mess up 100 times.

My last playthrough was a 3:00:50 on Normal. The fact that I was less than a minute away from sub-3 kills me. I want to get that sub-3 time, do a 0% run, and then every playthrough after that I’ll probably just play it normally.

The fight is broken up into distinct stages, so it does offer good points for pausing your Switch and taking a break if the tension is building up too much. If it's any encouragement, I feel each of the stages aren't that difficult in itself, it's just that they're all chained together for a lengthy encounter, so if you take a break in the middle it might help you decompress and get through it easier.

Well, fought the second Chozo robot that you can't cheese with speed booster on my 0% run. I am not looking forward to the rest of this run.

I'd say I can't imagine doing this on Hard mode, but I bet the only difference is that you start getting one shot earlier.

The only part you really need to worry about is the second stage

There's three stages. In the first and third, you can shoot the black holes with four ice missiles each to break them, which will give you a CHUNK of ammo and health back

It's only the second one where you really need to dodge and can't heal. But! But. This is also the best phase to use storm missiles on him

You'll get it! Once you get those patterns down, the final boss is tough, but very doable

There might be some breakable walls you can shoot. Perhaps in the elevator room? 🤔

I think you should be good there, but not sure. That's around where I freed the X in my sub 4 hour hard mode run, though that one came right down to the wire

I know the whole point of this video is that "we can have different opinions about games and that's okay"... but Adam's viewpoint here is just... what? Just like David Jaffe's outburst about this game, I really don't get the complaints about a lack of handholding in this game. Dread is my first true play through of a 2D Metroid, and I had no problem adjusting to it. Imo, any argument that the game relies on player's experience with the series and fails to evolve it is just so far off base.

You can not like it, but to claim that it's a relic of the past and is just an objective failure is wrong. Let alone the fact that he complains about features not existing which... do... such as highlighting specific door types.

It basically comes to the game being too hard for him if I remember correctly having watched this some time ago. Must've been the frustration that got him so down.

It will always come up. Long time "gamers" can't get stuck in "kiddie" Nintendo games, because they are cool and completed GTA once, so the game is bad, the design is wrong, the controls are jank, etc. It's never them making a mistake or rushing and skipping the tutorials because "Navi was annoying, right guys?" It's always a bad game.

Lack of handholding? The game subtly leads the player where they need to go all the time! If anything, I think the game is much better at doing it than older titles (barring fusion which literally just showed you a point on a map and told you to get there, which was a bad way to go about it)

Their others look dope. I hope they reissue the Prime 3 one someday, so I can get my hands on it. Don't wanna pay eBay prices.
