StarTopic Metroid Dread |ST| The Chozon One

Dread was my first Metroid game. I've tried others in the past, but only briefly, so all the mechanics were brand new.

I finished the game in 9 hours and 54 minutes. I'm pretty awful at games in general, so the last boss took me nearly 2.5 hours of nonstop attempts to beat. What a relief it was when the final cutscene happened.

Grabbing Raven Beak and screaming was such a satisfying moment.
Did you enjoy it? My first was Super, it's not as fluid as Dread in movement or directing progression. you can spend 9 hours in that and get nowhere if you aren't paying attention but it is worth a try if you like Dread.

Yes, those are the worst culprit, but I will say when you are attempting to go as fast as possible, even the "Saving Game" and "Power-Up Acquired" sessions get somewhat annoying. Another minor surprise for me was the fact the Opening of the game is unskippable.
I was taken aback when I couldn’t skip the opening. It’s sooooo slow.

Just finished the game. What an amazing rollercoaster. That's really how the game feels.

Let's be honest though the game has a way of leading you to the right path and as I heard friends complain about getting stuck in Super Metroid I understand why they have gone this path.

Something I wanna say is that the game reaaally reminds me of cave story in its pacing did anyone else have this? The way the game unexpectedly throws things at you is something I Loved about that game and Metroid Dread does the exact same.

Metroid Dread is not a predictable game!

Last thing I wanna say ks that I did not like how
sometimes powerups were quickly gained like how you go from double jump to space jump within minutes.

Almost seems rushed but I imagine making a complex game like Metroid is really hard so there's gonna be things like this.

Anyway. Shelfing this for a week or so before i go back and get all the items.

Absolutely. Very rewarding when you defeat a boss, learn how to utilize movement powers fluidly, and find secrets. I'd like to play the other games. So I may hunt down a 3DS.

Just cleared my first hard mode run in 4.5 hours. If I knew I could do it this fast I would have aimed for sub 4.

I wish this game had a boss rush mode so bad, really want to replay some of the fights at different conditions.

I'm a longtime Metroid fan and I can't stop thinking about this game. I've completed 5 playthroughs (best time is just over 3 hours IGT) and I'm thinking of starting another. The movement is incredible and might be the best in any Metroid style game ever. The boss difficulty was challenging but rewarding and made replays so satisfying. I love absolutely destroying the final boss on replays after thinking it was impossible during my first playthrough. Oh god I sound like a Dark Souls fan...

I think it'll probably rank as my 4th favorite Metroid game (Super > Zero Mission > Prime > Dread). I haven't played Prime in years so maybe that will change someday.

My biggest criticism is that none of the individual areas or music stand out as particularly memorable. There are some cool looking areas, but a lot of it blended together in my mind. The sound design is really good, but the songs themselves didn't stand out to me. It may be an unfair comparison, but nothing came close to the highs of Brinstar (jungle), Brinstar (underground), Phendrana Drifts or other all-time-classic tracks from Super/Metroid.

YouTube helped me a lot! I think I used the one from “Next Gen” but I’ve seen so many Dread speedrun vids I can’t remember the exact tutorial I used.

Thanks! Just looked up one of the ones I’m stuck on in that video and I don’t know if my old man fingers / reflexes are up for this 😅

Third run done, sub 4 hour hard mode in 3:11. Yeah, this is my GotY.

Finished with 100% of items on about 11 hours. Lost count of how many attempts the final boss took, but absolutely loved the ending. No-nonsense, no-frills. 'Blockbuster' was the word that came to mind.

Sorry, it has surely been answered countless times but it's a very long thread - is the way to get more of the Ending rewards simply to beat the game more times?

It's based on difficulty and how fast you finish

There's any time, sub 8 hours, and sub 4 hour ending rewards for both normal and hard difficulties. You can get all the rewards for a difficulty with a single sub 4 hour run on that difficulty but you can't get the rewards for normal by playing hard mode or vice versa

Annnd that's hard mode under 4 hours! Had a blast each time I played the game. Have to think whether or not I prefer it to Super as my favorite in the series, but overall fantastic game and one of my favorites this year.

Also the art you get after getting every ending is super good haha.

Just beat the game. 100%, just short of 13 hours.

The final boss is amazing. Took me 4 or 5 tries to take down the motherfucker. I think Dread singlehandedly has my favorite bosses of all time. It feels incredible to learn their patterns and improve until you can master them.

I might go for the sub 4h runs now. I've never done that in any Metroid game, but Dread is just too good.

Just finished it, took me around 8 hours and wow, what a game, perhaps the best in the series, I'm pretty much still in honeymoon phase though.

I'm starting a new Metroid Prime game on Wii's Trilogy, I'm still hungry for Metroid goodness now. :lol

This is only my second Metroid after Super and not gonna lie, I'm feeling super proud that I managed to unintentionally sequence break it!
I moved on to Dairon before finishing the boss in Cataris, got to the EMMI zone and almost got hunted down but was able to slide jump to wall jump and access a high area that lead to the bomb upgrade! I love that they had a bomb launcher in the Kraid fight too - although it made him an absolute joke

Only found out when I went to check a guide because I just couldn't work out how to get a certain missile upgrade. Super chuffed.

I never finish a game twice but this game makes me excited to go through again. I'm guessing a lot of players experience the same especially mastering the bosses feels really good.

I initially intended to keep posting my impressions fairly regularly, but I got distracted by actually playing the game (and watching some LPers/streamers I like playing it).

This game is some good, good stuff.

I’m up to the second progression visit to Cataris
The fight with the large boss

Anyone want to take a guess what power-up Z57's Core-X contained?
or Kraid-ven Beak for that matter?
Also during the escape sequence I was to busy spamming the hyper beam to realise Samus killed enemies by walking into them

So glad that I was FINALLY able to get the Metroid Dread Amiibos off Amazon today. I checked Amazon during my lunch break and they were actually in stock!!

That latter part in the second spoiler is quite something! I would never notice that under normal circumstances, but I'll definitely check it out on my next run.

Tried the demo. I'm not really good at Metroidvania games and haven't really played a Metroid game at all before, but I enjoyed the little I played of it. The EMMIs are terrifying and frustrating and I definitely got lost twice and had to look up how to get out, so I think I'd be pulling my hair out at the end. But it looks very impressive in all aspects, the cutscene choreography was stunning.

Doing some final clean up with 100%, at around 11.5 hours. This is probably a 10/10 for me. My only real complaints with the game are that the music aren't as memorable as Zero Mission/Fusion/Prime 1/SM/OG Metroid and that some of these last items with the Shinespark are just bullshit to get.

Played every Metroid but this is my first 100%. Finished it right around 10 hours, and it blew every one of my expectations away.

Can’t wait to put this in the yearly rotation!

This is a clear example why Metroid Dread has an incredible level design even being linear.

This is how Metroid Fusion should have been designed.

Damn. Just beat the final boss, last new Metroid games I bought were Fusion and Zero Mission and the Prime Gamecube releases... This fucking blew my mind!

I'd honestly consider it essential to the series, like, it even supplanted others with how smooth it controls and plays. I don't rank thangs, I think it's just an incredible game in the series. Man. I was floored.

My game of the year for sure, I don't think anything hits like a proper Metroid. I didn't think they had it in them.

The Switch as straight up delivered five 10/10 entries across Metroid, Zelda, Pikmin and Metroid for me and I'm ecstatic.

Holy hell what a ride!!!! I even failed the final section the first time I tried hahaha

85% item clear the first time around, some of those were damn hard lmao

The music is really starting to grow on me. I like the Artaria main and lava part tracks and Burenia's music the most so far.

Just finished it.

I decided to get every item before facing the final boss just so I experienced everything on my first run.

My final impression? One of the greatest Nintendo games of all time and beaten only by Breath of the Wild on Switch.

I’d probably give it a 9.5 with the only downside from my perspective being that the EMMI areas are a little bit too much trial and error, but other than that I felt it was absolutely outstanding. I’m now not quite sure how Metroid Prime 4 can top this!

The second-best Nintendo game of all time and it only gets a 9.5? 🤔

Maybe I sound crazy but I think that's the best game I ever played. For my tastes anyway.

BOTW was the king, but Dread feels better to go back to. Could be because I put 250 hours in BOTW though, but wow does Samus feel good to control and is that world ever cool to explore. The combat is just so good as well. It's like Alien Isolation meets Ninja Gaiden Black. The whole vibe is just dope.

I guess I'll have a clearer take in a year when I have better perspective.

finished. what a game...

i don't really get what happened tho, lol. gotta watch some explanations on youtube.

edit: i'm at 95%, is it worth going for 100? the few remaining shinespark puzzles just seem impossible to do :(
also is there a secret ending?

There’s no secret endings but the gallery in the main menu has some unlockables

Chozo Memories - one picture for each area you 100%, final picture for all areas 100%

Ending screens - tied to time and difficulty. Three for normal and three for hard. In those, one for beating the game, one for doing so in under 8 hours and one for doing so in under 4

thanks, in that case i guess i'm done with the game for now.

Done with normal mode, and hard mode shouldn't be too difficult after that, at least in terms of doing it under four hours.

Yeah Some of the shinespark puzzels are near impossible. I still have a few to go but I do not know if I have the determination. 😅
