Spoiler Super Mario Bros. Wonder - SPOILER Thread (Enter at your own risk)

List of every course in the game.

Some of these have interesting names! For example, two separate courses named WONDER?

Dang, so there’s not a castle in every world even.

I hope the final levels in each word suitably make up for that.

There are apparently several stage bosses associated with Wonder effects (like King Boo), so the boss variety in this game will come down to how strict your definition of “boss” is.

Do you know any bosses that are wonder effects? (beyond king boo)

Oh that’s a single course; it just goes by two different IDs in the files for whatever reason. Through finding some dev comments on the courses left in (!), looking at the world map data and listening to the talking flower dialogue for the course ID I know it is at the very end of Special World, treated as a Poplin house in the files, and is a celebratory little level for clearing that Final Final Test.

Would have been cool to have Koji Kondo compose the main overworld theme to make the game feel even more special.

The theme we got is alright, but it's still a bit too reminiscing of the NSMB era for me, and I'm not a fan of the vocals honestly.

I really like the theme personally. It's that style of music, but done much better. Especially since the vocals sound like people actually chorusing rather than randomly saying bah. Maybe it's just me, but the reason I disliked the vocals is because it doesn't sound like a chorus to me.

Sound Director
  • Koji Kondo
Music
  • Shiho Fujii
  • Sayako Doi
  • Chisaki Shimazu
Interesting. I can't find anything on Chisaki Shimazu so she(?) must be another new hire like we saw with TotK. Sayako Doi I haven't heard much of, and unfortunately I can't say I'm expecting too much from Shiho Fujii in this context. She was great on Skyward Sword and Mario Kart 8, but she was also one of the main composers on NSMBWii, and she wasn't saving Odyssey either (though to be fair, even Koji Kondo wasn't that great on Odyssey...)

I'm not super confident in her as an apparent lead, because I feel like she's generally only as good as whoever the lead is. That airship theme seems about what I'd expect, really. Not on the same level as something like 3D World, but still a marked improvement from the dullness of NSMBWii now that we don't have some of Kenta Nagata's worst material setting the standard. Maybe this'll compete for the best 2D Mario soundtrack? I can't help thinking it's kind of disappointing compared to what it could have been, but most of what we've heard is far from bad either.

By the way, it's about time Mario had a factory level. Aside from Chompworks, sort of, I think this may be the first time the series has actually touched this trope in a platformer.

i thought he was a wiggler. do wigglers grow wings and become butterflies?

I said what I said. Odyssey's soundtrack is consistently bad to mediocre and forgettable. You've got Steam Gardens and a few other decent themes from Kondo like Forgotten Isle, that's it. I don't think Naoto Kubo has it, at all, and he clearly set the tone for everyone else here.
Odyssey soundtrack is decent imo. Some of it isn't that great to be honest, but most I argue is very good.

Awful awful take. Tostarena Ruins, New Donk City, Fossil Falls are all bangers

Hat Kingdom
Cascade Kingdom
New Donk City
Steam Gardens
Jump Up Superstar
Shivera Town
Bowser’s Castle

…and plenty of other bangers.

Yeah there’s a few unmemorable tracks, but there’s tons of standouts imo.

Mario has always been hot or miss with soundtracks, honestly. I think only Yoshi's Island, 64 and Galaxy have soundtracks I would say are amazing, the rest are varying degrees of competent to good, with a few stand out pieces (which is where Odyssey falls in for me). From what I'm hearing from Wonder, this seems to be the case here as well. I think it lacks teeth.
