Week 1 (October 1-7)
We all started our Famiboards adventure from somewhere. Some of us journeyed from the old sites, others joined the party over time. How did you find the forum, and why did you join?

As many other people, I came here from Era. I had been a member of Era since early 2021, after me and my friend bounced from another forum. I had sort of on-and-off lurked the General Discussion threads since mid-2020. It was such an interesting time for Nintendo news because everything was sort of up in the air, what with it being the age of Twitter drops and minis and everything. It was a no-brained to join Fami, since the General Discussion threads on Era sort of had become a cornerstone of my day-to-day life.

I was a semi-regular poster on GAF before that all blew up. I was going through some personal issues at the time of the ResetEra transition, so I wasn't one of the ones who hopped over initially. I think my GAF account is still active, but I'm not looking to find out - haven't gone on that site in forever.

Didn't help that Era had that ridiculous paid email stipulation to join, so I wasn't able to partake. Lurked for years though, so saw everything that went down when it came to the creation of this site. Figured I would join since I was actually able to do so.

2 Fami 2 Boards, can't believe we are at YEAR 2 of this site. Crazy how fast time goes.

As for October, 3 weeks left till I fly to Japan! Lets goooo

Man, when will the Ice Climbers get the respect they deserve with a new game? Let's be real, Smash doesn't cut it.

#PopoNanaHD

2 years old already?! I lurk in Resetera but I post here. This place is a great way of motivating me to play my backlog and think a little bit deeper into the games I play. I'm still definitely not a strong critic but I'm getting slightly interested in writing about games on the side.

And later this month, I'll be heading to New York City for a month stay! Maybe I'll visit the NY Nintendo Store during the Mario Wonder launch. And maybe I can finally try to redeem physical goodies with all those Platinum points I've accumulated. Any New Yorkers who want to trade regional Pokemon with me in Pokemon Go can also get in touch!

Nice, we're finally in the scariest month of the year. Too bad no scary spooky games to go with that this year. I'll replay one of the Fatal Frames, I guess.

To answer the question: Typical Gaf -> Era -> Fami journey. Mine started in 2008.

I've been saving Oxenfree 2 for October, though apparently the scariest thing about this sequel is that it's bad 🙈

The Ice Climbers needs a new 2D Platformer with a sorta 3D Cameray.
Imagine a Spiky peak and you walk up a level that swirld around the peak. So you play on a 2D plane but as you move forward you actually go around the spire, following a path until you get to the very peak.
I have always imagined that could be a fun and simple platformer concept.
Hell, can have a few different Styles of levels for it.
The one I mentioned, and some where you shoot a hook to the top of a sheer cliff, and then walk up it , tied to a rope. Having to dodge falling stuff, and junk.
And more traditional platforming levels, and maybe auto-scroll levels where you sled down mountains, etc etc

Original exodus, became one of the first mods because I wanted to hold our place to higher standard and despite a frankly ridiculous amount of hardship (issues both onsite and off), I'm so happy to have been a part of making this place what it is today.

I guess technically my journey began around 2014 when I started lurking on GAF. I snuck in early on Era with an e-mail I got from applying to a university, then lost the account, then asked if it'd be okay if I made a new account, was told yes, and got jebaited with a retroactive perm after a year

Didn't help that Era had that ridiculous paid email stipulation to join, so I wasn't able to partake.
Man that's such a nostalgic old internet thing you'd only get in a place founded in the early noughties.

Like, these days the idea of using my work email for anything that isn't strictly work related is crazy, but I guess twenty years ago that was seen as a good idea?

just to state the obvious for any unfamiliar onlookers: era was founded in 2017

The terrible two's are upon us. We'll mark that with tantrums and trials.

I started on GAF somewhere in the '10s with my university email, jumped to Era when that ship sank, and then made the exodus here. It's been a colorful road, for sure, but we've picked up plenty of processes and Subway along THESE months!

Reddit and Twitter slowly imploding brought me here, don't even know how exactly I stumbled upon this board here 😁

Lurked a while, then made an account for the spicy stuff in the hardware thread, lurked some more and started participating around the January direct 👀

I've witnessed empires rise and crumble over eons... (Registered and participated in both NeoGAF and ResetEra)

The old guard passed on their duties to the new, faces once familiar now a shadow of a memory, their names now lost within server archives waiting for digital archeologists to piece together who they once were. All we are is dust in the wind, dude.

Dust, wind, dude.

I woke up with minimal caffeine in my system; thank you for hosting our last ST @Barely Able and congrats on a phenomenal ST25 @VolcanicDynamo!

That new thread smell. Not sure I’m grabbing anything at launch this month unless megaton Musashi wired pops out of nowhere. Tons of anime to watch and backlog to play.

Say @VolcanicDynamo that reminds me whatever happened to the Super Mario badge event raffle? Also you’re doing the high score list first then the general badge raffle right? Since that’ll have the least amount of overlap disqualification

Era done me and a lot of other people wrong. Plus, I like the vibe here.

I slipped in here with my free Google email address and felt like I was getting away with something. Like hahaha the gatekeepers forgot to latch the lock today!

And then I pretty quickly caught the solid vibe that is totally uninterested in power dynamics or most other toxic traits that sometimes amass a dark cloud over potential community involvement. It's been a while since I had been active in an online forum and joined primarily because I wanted a place to share short impressions of the games I played last year. (First day was January 4th, 2022.) I stuck around because I appreciate the hub. It's a good hub.

A new Forza was always a first day buy for me but I have not bought a console since Switch so still last gen I guess. Damn, I used to be on top of these things and now I kind of feel there is just to little to play on Xbox and PS5 to justify buying those consoles. Feels bad man. Especially since there ARE games I want to play like the Demon's Souls Remake and like I said, Forza.

Like a lot of people: was on Era, ran afoul of the moderation's...idiosyncracies, and found the community here much more welcoming and fulfilling to engage with. It's a dime a dozen story, but it shows just how enjoyable this forum is to be a part of in the wider internet!

Super Mario Wonder
Spider-Man 2
Batman Arkham Collection
MGS Master Collection Volume 1

That’s my day one purchases this month, already paid for Mario and Batman and have credit for MGS and Spidey thankfully

Spectrum is out AGAIN. This is ridiculous. It came back on last night around 7pm after being out since 1pm, and now it’s out again. This is the fifth time in a little more than a week.

Fourth TotK playthrough done.

I was actually super nervous going into the final fight. My goal with this playthrough has been to beeline the story, doing as little shrines and defeating as little enemies as possible.

So with only 10 hearts, a fair few of scraped together weapons and, like, 2 sundelion meals and 2 regular meals, I went into the battle.

And I made it, first attempt! While most of it was down to me being super good at flurry rushing and having attack boost armor, I also think that maybe it’s also down to the final boss level-scaling in one way or another.

We've gotten some wonderful (pun absolutely intended) answers to our first weekly question!

As for my journey, I started lurking on NeoGAF back in 2016 thanks to Nintendo Switch rumors and leaks. I ended up sticking around because I liked seeing people talk about games and the occasional off topic section. When the first mass exodus happened, I hopped onto ResetEra, again as a lurker. That happening with the release of Super Mario Odyssey made it particularly memorable - the dual OT by @TheMoon on both sites was a fun touch. I did have a school email at the time, but I was also a pretty shy person. I was content to just keep reading. So, that's what I did. Followed threads on gaming and etcetera. And then the Nintendo Direct and General Discussion threads came into being, and that became the one major topic I lurked. Sometimes my Era experience was just going on that thread. And it was so active that I could do just that, with a lot of its own regulars and its own culture.

And then things on ResetEra went south. I didn't have access to any Discord server, so I heard about the transitions in hushed tones in a much more...dour thread than usual. Soon as the site was mentioned outside of hidden content, I was determined to make an account. No more lurking. And that's how I became member #200, part of that October 1st wave. I'm glad I finally joined one of these forums. I've met lots of great folks - and now great friends - and I get to have a space to talk about how much I love Mario! Here's to many more years of Famiboards and the community surrounding it.

The raffles are still gonna happen! I just got busy with things outside of Fami. My goal is to have them done by the end of the week, but we'll see with work stuff. It'll absolutely be done before Wonder's release, though!

It was especially fun when folks on the orange board weren't getting what was happening lol
when this places crumbles it will splinter into various Paper Mario forums and the apocalypse will truly be upon us.
calling shotgun on the sticker star splinterorum. I wanna be where the weirdos are.

Oooooh, the spookiest ST of the year is here. Nice! Also, happy birthday, Famiboards.

To answer this week's question, I discovered Famiboards pretty much by chance; after a couple of years away from gaming forums, I found out that the ones I used to frequent had gone the way of the dodo. Searching for a new place, I literally googled "Nintendo forum", checked some of the threads in here, liked the general vibe... and that's it!

Pfft, bold of them to assume that the planet will last that long in the first place.

Happy 2nd bday Fami!! Time flies!

I didn't realize this board was created in Spoopy Month!
'tis the rule. a forum split has to birth a new forum only in the orange month of misty forests and chilling howls. (purple forum was also born in october)

2 Fami 2 Boards, can't believe we are at YEAR 2 of this site. Crazy how fast time goes.
And next year it'll finally be time for my favorite entry:
The Fami and the Boards: Tokyo joycon Drift!!
We aughta all meet up in Akiba next October to commemorate.
As for October, 3 weeks left till I fly to Japan! Lets goooo
Hey whoa I appreciate the enthusiasm but I said next October

my ignore list is chock full of people who prefer f-zero gx to x
My ignore list is chock full of nobody and I really probably aughta remedy that

I've seen Cloud Atlas, we'll be long gone by then.

I decided to check out Kirby's Star Stacker last night, intending just to see what it was like, play one game of it. Apparently I picked an endless mode and either it's pretty easy or I'm really good at it, because I played for a hour lol.

Finally some capeshit I can get behind:

One thing I need to get better at when clearing my backlog is playing story-focused games past, oh, 2PM. I played Persona 5 Royal deep into the night, but with everything else since then, I play for an hour, hour and a half, and then go, alright, on to Splatoon or baseball.
