StarTopic RPGs |ST| Our Home Base For All Role Playing Game Discussions!

Had some time to play all the demos for a couple of hours

DQM: what I expected for a new monsters, I still say this look betters than Treasures (which is not a high bar), and there is a lot of stuff to do!. Really the only thing I miss is the autonaming from the GB. Was hoping to get some funny random name. But yeah this is going to be my december game without doubt

Star Ocean 2: Really improved version from the original, nice graphics and a solid combat system too. This one is prob going to wait since I had only budget for SMRPG in November

Silent Hope: This is the one that catched most of my attention, and now that I was able to play it at my own pace (The PAX demo was timed) I really like Marveolous diablo-like version in the rune factory universe. Every character has it's own combat style and can do some nice combos and the progression is simple and they really want you to play with all the characters since swapping game in dungeon gives you pasive boosts (also its not a high budget game so it is very affordable) Also the decay memories areas are really brutal, got killed twice trying to clear those. Granted the first layer is the tutorial, but overall it was my favorite of the 3

I feel like I haven’t shared my own RPG playing in a while. I posted this last night in the General Discussion thread as I did get to play three hours of the Pokemon DLC in online co-op with my older brother.

I played three hours of the Pokemon SV DLC with my brother online tonight. I was instantly reminded why it was one of my favorite games last year as the online multiplayer is just incredible. I thought it might have trouble as it transitioned into the DLC area, but nope no issue and the moment we were in it was constant discovery of new monsters to catch left and right. 100 new ones in total!

My favorite moment was when we accidentally triggered the same story cutscene where you walk into the first building because we each approached it from opposite directions and didn’t know it was there lol. But the regularly great moments were of course were scanning the fields together for new Pokemon to catch, taking on raids together, and the regular “what was that!?” moments we shared. We only played for three hours, but I at least already caught / evolved 44 of the Pokemon in it. Hoping to play again soon.
I’m juggling four games now between Rain Code, Pokemon DLC, Trombone Champ, and F-Zero 99. I think my plan of attack for the next few days is to finish chapter 2 of Rain Code and then pause there so that when Nayuta hits, which I’m putting together the ST for either tomorrow or Monday (who is all picking it up?), I’ll just be good to focus solely on that. Pokemon I think I’ll only be playing when I can play in co-op so I’m not really concerned there.

I started playing Eternights this weekend, and I was looking forward to it as a Persona 5 clone. It's not completely the same; the combat here is action-based, and the emphasis on timing dodges reminds me of Bayonetta more than anything else. The social sim and calendar elements are definitely more like a Persona game.

I think it's impressive that a single developer put in so much of the work on this game, but it has some issues. Some battles later on have been very punishing for me whenever I don't time my dodges exactly right. You can upgrade the character for more abilities, but in the end, basically every fight is just dodge --> build up special attack gauge --> use special attack --> repeat. The problem I've had is that dodge timing needs to be incredibly precise as I get further, and it sometimes feels like I'm playing a less fun version of Dark Souls.

The social sim stuff is better, but the characters aren't very well developed. They just have one trope, or one problem, and that's basically it. I haven't finished anyone's social links yet, so maybe it gets better. This part of the game is enjoyable even though it's not very deep.

Overall, I'm liking it enough to finish it, but it will probably be a 6 or 7/10. The combat just drags it down too much for me. If Studio Sai wants to make a sequel, I think they have a good enough base to make something great. Eternights is a solid effort for their first major release.

Made it to Chapter 11 in LaD now. I have neglected the business management mini game after the initial push to top 100 company, and am still undecided on whether I want to push through it or just continue doing the main story and occasional side stories.

I am also incredibly tempted to replay some a FF game after. I played 13 and 15 for the first time last year, but it has been a while since I sat down and replayed the older ones. Really got the itch to replay 12 specifically. But it has also been too long since I really played any of the PS1 era games. Let alone the fact I to this day never played 8, and never finished 7.

If only they weren't such a massive time-sink.

I just posted my ST for The Legend of Nayuta Boundless Trails! The game comes out on Tuesday (my Switch copy is already on the way!) so whoever is picking it up, I hope to see you all there :)

My backlog is way too long right now but I’m still interested! Looking forward to how you all are liking it.

Totally understandable! I’m juggling four games right now and will soon be failing to juggle five with Nayuta haha. At least it’s a fun problem to have :)

I tried a couple of RPG demos.

Silent Hope- I like the presentation but just found this boring. The whole ‘random dungeon to get items that can be turned into items and then made into other items if you wait a bit’ just has rpg busywork written all over it. I like the simple story, the reason to go dungeon diving is immediate and interesting, but the gameplay loop just isn’t it for me.

Dragon Quest Monsters
Hmm. Much like Treasures, I think the whole ‘DQ monster squad’ thing doesn’t work for me. I quite enjoy it in SMT and MH Stories, but for some reason I just don’t find the Dragon Quest monsters very interesting.

However! This is what I like about demos. To each their own, it means I’m more likely to spend my cash on something I’ll enjoy!

I succumbed to the business management mini game, and now Ichiban Holdings are number one, as they should be.

Full steam ahead for the main story, now.

I just "finished" the Scarlet DLC (going back from time to time). So I downloaded all the demos from the direct. Have not tried Silent Hope and DQM3 (barely started)

-Tried the Star Ocean demo and it was great. Visually great. A bit of a slow burner in the story part and combat feels a bit simple for now. Definitely on my wishlist.

I did notice something, SE is a weird company (nothing new lol). They got demos for 2 games that are releasing 2-3 months from now, but did not do it for their upcoming game in a few weeks: Dai. A game I would argue needs a demo more. Maybe its because its story heavy at the beginning, but if thats the case they can do what BD2 did for their demo, throw you in 8 hours with equipment in an area with monsters.

So, uhm, turns out I came back for the money. 3 million per board meeting is nothing to sneeze at.

Not to mention that "watch numbers go up - the game" is more addictive than I am willing to admit.

—What is the development status of Dragon Quest III in HD-2D and Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate?

Horii: “Dragon Quest III in HD-2D is progressing quite steadily. As for Dragon Quest XII, there’s still not much I can say.”
When was 3 remake announced, in 2021? I expected it to have released by the end of this year tbh. SE can now wait for the Switch 2 launch anyway.

I mean, I doubt any dev is gonna say "aaaallllmost done!" until they're ready to commit to a release date.
Yeah, I wouldn’t have expected much, but the fact that he says DQ3 HD is “progressing steadily” but refrains from applying that same vague and general statement to DQXII makes me think that DQXII is not making steady progress at this point. It’s possible that it’s just a translation issue though.

Regrettably, this is where I end my playthrough, at least for now. I lack the patience to deal with this fight atm. Maybe I should have returned to Gran Pulse after all before pressing on, but I really wanted to wrap this up for good. Oh, well.

Overall, though, I fell in love with FF13's battle system, and definitely enjoyed my time with the game. This goes in the "good FF" pile for sure. No clue what to call the battle system. It is ATB at its core, but has extra layers with the paradigm shifting which make it feel more strategic. I dub it "peak FF combat."

Feels bad to abandon this right at the finish line, but I might return to it one day.
This happened more than a year ago at, and I still feel bad about it.

Don’t feel bad, the final boss of FF13 is really badly balanced. It’s way too hard for if you go there at a natural point in the level up progression, the game basically expects you to go do a ton of hunts and upgrade gear and such. Even with maxed out skill trees it can be tricky because the game locks off the last crystalarium expansion behind the final boss. I would be fine with that if it wasn’t quite so hard, it’s just a little overtuned.

Poison and other debuffs help a ton with this one if I recall correctly. But final bosses in most FF games tend to be poorly tuned as a rule.

The most aggravating thing was that it seemed doable until shit hits the fan and everything goes sideways within the blink of an eye. Having to redo the Barthandelus fight again every time did not help matters, either.

In case I return to it, which I kind of want to, I think I should go back to Gran Pulse to do some quests before I tackle the final boss again.

That would definitely help with crystarium levels. I wouldn’t sweat gear upgrading that much. There’s some nice perks (ie. auto-haste is a huge time saver if I’m remembering correctly) but I think you only need to engage with it for the post-game.

I have the exact opposite advice of this. I didn't do any gran pulse stuff until post game. What made some of the later bosses go from almost impossible to completely rolled was weapon upgrading. I had largely ignored it the whole way until the 2nd Bart fight where I ran out of time and died. Upgrading weapons and gear as much as I could I basically rolled to credits without breaking a sweat.

I just recently finished a replay of FF13 and found a method that wiped out Orphan pretty handily. I don’t know if it’ll singlehandedly solve the issue but it might at least help (for reference I hadn’t gone out of my way to do any grinding but I did do around half of the hunts in Pulse, and as far as weapon upgrades go, I had most of my characters’ equipped weapons upgraded to the first tier’s max and only a couple upgraded to the second tier. Beat Orphan on the first try but the Barthandelus fight beforehand still took me 3 or 4 attempts).

Anyway, my strategy for Orphan mainly involved abusing Lightning’s Army of One (her full ATB skill that she learns from the Ravager tree). It’s solid for helping to raise an enemy’s chain before stagger, but after stagger is when it becomes absurdly powerful. It deals something like 10-15 hits of damage that rapidly raise the chain so you can get up to 999% very quickly. On top of that, if you switch Lightning to the commando paradigm right after the attack activates, you’ll get the much higher damage output of a commando on top of the chain gauge increase. And perhaps most significantly, an enemy’s chain gauge won’t reset until the attack ends, so if you activate Army of One just before Orphan’s stagger runs out, it’ll give you several precious extra seconds for both Lightning and your other team members to deal a ton of damage since the chain will likely already be at 999%.

OK, might be absolutely nothing but I'd like to bring up that Square has a pre-TGS(?) sale going right now. If we take a look at what is on discount (among the many titles that are) we can also spot the entire SaGa series. It's slightly more relevant than usual because two games (Romancing 3 and Collection) also happen to be at an all-time low.
Also worth highlighting that the Voice of Cards series is also on sale, as is the Theatrythm Final Bar Line Deluxe Upgrade (which includes the first DLC season pass)

Uh, Star Ocean 1 is on sale and it's very cheap. I'm going to get it, but I'm not sure if pick it on Switch or PSN lol.

How Sega/Atlus releasing 3 RPGs within 2 months.
Another one for the pile! The first 3-4 months of 2024 are stacking up to be absolutely absurd for RPG releases. Throw in November/December along with it and we're getting a pretty incredible 6-month span of games

Weekly Famitsu-Nihon Falcom

Falcom plan to announce new releases at the December Shareholder Meeting, as well a new title that is different from Ys and Kiseki series.

Looking forward to what Nihon Falcom will reveal these "new" releases either by December or at earlier date.

I heard a lot of things behind close doors but eventually we hear them soon enough. Just the right time at the right place.

:)
Tokyo Xanadu 2 and ports and remaster like this year, I guess. And we have this. But I've read somewhere that the score is actually 34. That would be the same as
Ys VIII.

Edit: It is indeed a 34/40.

Apparently the new Switch port of Tokyo Xanadu 2 added new teases for a sequel, so the announcements are probably Kuro 3 and Tokyo Xanadu 2.

I’d be down for Tokyo Xanadu 2. It was a fusion of Trails and Ys and I didn’t quite like it as much as either, but I still had a good time and the modern setting is fun.

If Falcom wants to keep a not Persona franchise going (ie an rpg series where the characters go to school), it makes sense to bring back Tokyo Xanadu in that role now that the the Trails franchise is pretty far removed from the Cold Steel era.

I'd prefer a follow up to Xanadu Next honestly, but yeah zero chance.

I tried to get into Tokyo Xanadu a couple of times but never managed to go very far...

Hints points to another Tokyo Xanadu. Not a big fan of the name but it offers something different. I do hope the switch version makes to the west.

What old ports are out there from Falcom? As far as I knew most titles were either tied up with Xseed like Tokyo Xanadu or out.
They could announce they acquired the rights for some games from Xseed. Other than that, PS5 ports of Cold Steel 3/4.

Isn't Xanadu (at least EX) Aksys? So its not impossible to see that one.

But I think we mostly likely get the PS5 port of the CS games lol.....

Or it's related to the Microsoft TGS stream a few hours earlier. Nothing but game pass announcements.

I'd love to hear about Kuro's localization, but I always try to be skeptical when companies hype up their SPECIAL announcements.

Is it a reasonable time to expect something from Kuro? I forget when exactly they announced Zero, Azure, and Reverie.
