News Red Dead Redemption coming to Switch and PS4 on August 17, physical version on October 13

Lets do the whole poll thing "Will RDR on Switch require a download?"

Because TakeTwo loves money, right?

And an 8GB cartridge is significantly cheaper than a 16GB cart.

But hey, if the customer already is resigned to download, its totally wasteful to use an 8GB cart and make them download just 3 more GB of game data. At that point it just makes sense to use a 4GB cart. After all, whats the big diff between having to download 3GB or 7GB

Why even include a cart at all? I mean, they could just do the Fortnite thing and just have a download code inside the box...

There are so many titles I missed in the so-called "PS360 era" that I am discovering on Switch.

The only people who seem to hate these ports are Sony fans who hate the prospect of Nintendo-only owners finally getting their hands on top-end 3rd party titles (like The Witcher 3), abeit last-gen (like L.A. Noire and Portal 1 & 2). Such people also say there's no reason to own a Switch.

Yeah, I see a lot of people who hate Switch getting ports like this and joke about ‘too many ports’ but it’s only bolstering what is a fantastic console library and they are not preventing new games being made either.

But why sold with a code or a cartridge when they can sell a empty box?
That's what pre-order goods are for...

In all seriousness, if everything is in the cartridge and it turns out to be a solid Switch port, I'm down. And I only owned GUN for GameCube...

it seems that only physical is going to be published on switch, is the only platform with physical listings on europe and america

Thanks for the info, is interesting to know that Nintendo is approaching rockstar as a partner in the same way that they approached Mojang and Minecraft

Im sure we probably see on Switch 2 more rockstar games
Do the Minecraft/GTA Trilogy boxes say Mojang/R* or Nintendo on the spine?

I really feel like Red Dead Redemption was originally a Switch exclusive. Because Playstation only got it on PS4 and not PS5. If I remember correctly, The PS4 resolution is 1080p and 30 FPS, which is the same of that of the Switch version TV mode. Only PS4 Pro and PS5 BC gets it on 4K, but still 30 FPS.

Besides, Nintendo themselves got their own trailer, but Playstation is exactly the same of that on Rockstars YT account.

E: Would also explain why there isn't a PC version, I think.
The "Presenta" had me check Spanish language retailers and Amazon Mexico has the game listed under Nintendo so I'm leaning towards them being the distributor again. Obviously, we'll have to wait to see the final release to confirm, but Amazon MX has correctly sorted GTA Trilogy (among other titled) as Nintendo-distributed while L.A. Noire was distributed by Rockstar themselves. Anyone expecting deep discounts relatively soon might be setting themselves up for disappointment, barring retailer specific sales.
It wasn't highlighted in the Take Two / BC thread, but at the end of the interview with IGN was this

But I did ask him if Take-Two would be an early supporter of a new Nintendo system as they were with the Nintendo Switch, to which he replied, "almost certainly."

Whether this culminates in GTA6 or not, I don't know, but I don't think Rockstar skips Switch (2) with any legacy content they revisit. To me, this feels analogous to Nintendo distributing Zenimax titles in the early years of the Switch and then getting things like Doom Eternal, OG DOOM, Quake, etc. I expect to see RDR2, GTAIV, etc.
Reggie Fils-Aime to Hollywood reporter 2018:
Absolutely. We’d love for it to be there. But again — and this is where there needs to be an understanding of just the development process — Red Dead has been in development for years, time that predated any communication of Nintendo Switch. So, from the developer’s mentality, they need to move forward and finish the game they’ve been working on and then be in a position to look at other opportunities. Any game from a key third-party that’s coming out now, typically that development started well before any conversations about Nintendo Switch. What happens moving forward? We’ll see. But that’s how you wind up with a situation with Red Dead not being available on our platform.

Okay, so I came up with something (that may be very ridiculous but all speculation), but:

What if Nintendo came to ask Rockstar to port RDR1 to their system, and would distribute the physical release, due to being late for RDR2 like Reggie said, but they would've loved it anyway. And thus the RDR1 port was mainly focused on Switch, and having an easy way to PS4, instead of PS5, XBX and PC. In 2021 Totilo said that RDR2 would be made for Switch and ''Switch Pro'', but what if it was pushed to the next Nintendo system (switch 2), in which they apparently say they would almost certainly be an early supporter. If Switch 2 devkits are send off around this time period, and Take-Two say they release ''several groundbreaking titles'' in fiscal year 2025, I don't think GTA 6 would be likely going on Switch 2, but RDR2 probably will. But I wonder and speculate ''why would Nintendo try so hard to get the RDR1 port and distribute the physical release and let it be mainly the Switch focus point of development, after such long time since that interview of Reggie and Hollywood reporter, even after Red Dead Online was left poorly by Rockstar, for them focusing more on GTA Online and GTA VI? Why?''. And from that point of my deepgoing brain where it began to speculate something probably ridiculous: What if Red Dead Redemption III is in the talks, where of as no one hears from it, but after what happened with RDO one would assume Rockstar is mainly focused on the GTA development, but would financed by Nintendo, like how Nintendo did with Platinum Games and Bayonetta 2, so Nintendo would have a Rockstar title that is exclusive to them?

It is and would be frick'n ridiculous, but when Bayo 2 was announced to be on a Nintendo Platform only and was financed by Nintendo, it did shock a lot of people for Nintendo having an mature rated game in their library. Now, not that Rockstar is in financial trouble or anything, but looking how Rockstar treats RDR and mostly the online, and how Nintendo acts towards Rockstar.. Idk, it might be a very small chance, but it could happen. Again, this is all speculation from my part.

I get the feeling this release was probably digital only across Switch and PS4 to match the Xbox version, but Nintendo pitched in for physical distribution. My assumption is that Nintendo wants the boxed version on store shelves & online to keep improving their image (by improve I mean the idea that Nintendo systems are only for kids & families). Especially in preparation for COD next year and likely GTAV on NS2 (among other R* titles).

After looking at the user scores on R*, PlayStation, and Nintendo, Nintendo fans are just happy to be invited.

Though given Switch had its own trailer and a physical, I suspect this was intended for Switch first? Or maybe the Nintendo distribution deal got them some perks

If you like westerns, I recommend Call of Juarez Gunslinger.
It's a great game, the setting is perfect, and it's available on switch

My theory is PS5 and Xbox SX getting the full remake while Switch getting the barebones port. They cancelled the remakes last year but went on with the Switch port, it possibly had Nintendo involvement. Interesting part of all is the PS4 version, it does look like it's a last minute decision.

GTA4 remakster also got cancelled last year so we might see its Switch version pretty soon too. Maybe even on the next Direct.

I love all three Red Dead games very much. This seems pretty expensive. Maybe I should just bite the bullet on Xbox. Gotta get that bullshit “kill a bear with a knife” challenge all over again! 🙃

Looking through this thread again and physical cart + require download discussion, wasn't LA Noire Remastered one of the first games that needed a download in the 1st year of the Switch?

Yeah but it’s also a larger file size

I think so. RDR2 was name dropped by the BotW, Reggie said they wanted, Totilo said it was in the works for Switch / Switch Pro, why not do RDR1 as well?

I don't think this is the case, but everyday I hope to God that if any game gets this treatment, it's Lollipop Chainsaw Remake. I was optimistic when they released the first renders, but that 11th Anniversary screenshot looks so bad. It's like George Lucas just digitally adding a ton of shit in the background of Star Wars. More isn't always better.

Was the word remake with regard to RDR1/GTAIV used often? I thought I remembered the report that got everyone talking about those games’ plans being cancelled just talking about remasters

My point being I wonder if that report was just wrong about plans being shelved, and this quick and dirty remaster was always the plan.

The full rumor said "RDR1 and GTA4 remakes got shelved to focus on GTA6 development". Whatever they were, they were done in-house, so R* shifted all the manpower to GTA6 development. This release of RDR is outsourced to Double Eleven, just a quick port job (though they say it's hard to port RDR1 anywhere else, it might not have been "quick").

Lets say they were, building the world wouldn't be so hard for them I guess. But for a remake they have to rehire the Voice actors again, and with what Niko Bellic's VA had said about Rockstar, I highly doubt they could get him. Not to mention hire all these VA's for GTA 4 and probably the other stories of Liberty City and Red Dead Redemption once again. That'll take up some good money for Rockstar to do that.

Not mention they have to put Online after hearing the backlash of these Switch and PS4 porta not having it. Rockstar is a big company, but having to maintain the online of GTA 6, GTA4 remake and RDR1 remake seems to be a bit much for Rockstar, especially since they abandoned the online for RDR2, and went further with milking out GTAO instead.

Rockstar/Take Two will not respond to online "backlash" at all as they never have. GTA is a very mainstream series, A direct port of GTA4 without any online modes on Switch & PS4 would go on to sell several millions.

That's true, but I thought you were talking about a full remake ^^'

I'm thinking of this, which got a lot of discussion when it broke last summer (it's a tweet from that big R* leaker Tez):

And Kotaku confirmed it with their own sources (they weirdly say the word remake once at the beginning, but then say remaster several times over every other time, including in the headline):

Red Dead Redemption, GTA IV Remasters Shelved After GTA Trilogy Debacle

I think we might still see RDR2 as a late impossible port for Switch, with Switch 2 receiving a better version of course. We've seen some ports take a hell lot of time, and I highly doubt they'd just cancel all this time of work. Switch 2 will probably get the regular game that won't need any sacrifices to come so probably an easy port. But an impossible port for Switch would be amazing no matter how late it came out, specially with the first game being on the platform.

RDR1 here is probably testing the architecture's compatibility with Rockstar's RAGE engine. It's not super well known that LA Noire does not, in fact, run on that engine.

They are testing with the spaggueti code game, if it can, every other games can

That's the other thing. I think a lot of people are underselling how big a deal it is that this game is getting ported to new systems at all. It's only on Xbox One/Series X because Microsoft figured out how to get a 360 emulator working on there.

Depends if they want to spend that money on a 16GB cart or go with a 4GB and have the rest be downloaded

It looks like Nintendo/Rock star have the same distribution deal for this game much like they did with GTA Trilogy. And they opted for a 16gb cartridge for that collection.

Hopefully they do the same here.

After complaining about the price a few pages ago, I think I'm mentally starting to cave in to the prospect of playing RDR and I might but it during the next few days. You won, Rockstar. Here's hoping that if this sells well, we'll see RDR2 come to the Switch or the Drake in the future.

This feels like a reaction to takes from twitter and the purple site tbh. Very good listen as usual.

Though to me this is mostly a Switch release. PS4 one seems like a bonus, unless it does have PS4 Pro enhancements that'll carry over to PS5.

Can’t wait to see how this runs on Switch, sadly enough I’m working atm so I can’t buy the game when it releases in the next hour or so

Yeah, it's out today huh? I getting it too, but I'll wait for the physical release, and buy it on black friday. :p Hope to see some footage of the Switch version soon enough.

Still not out, bit odd. Is it not coming out in Japan? Checked on the Japan e-shop page to see if it was coming and the search came up empty.

Surely not a GTA trilogy-like ass port
This looks and plays (going by those videos) better than the ps3 version, even if lower resolution/effects than the ps4 one

As it should be

Comparison video if anyone would like :)

Oh thank god that awful popin in the PS3 version is not in Switch. Popin was one of the most annoying issues on PS3, I absolutely love that Switch ports (all of the AC games) fixing this.

Other than looks like a very solid port. Hoping some similar effort for GTA4 and Midnight Club too.
