StarTopic Nintendo General Discussion Thread | ST23 August 2023 | Things get WEIRD

How likely is that nintendo will implement some kind of achievement system in their next console? I would be surprised if they didn't, because it's free money. There are many people who buy games just to get easy points and that's 30% for ninny without lifting a finger. Personally Im so used to having a more robust profile on xbox that playing on switch feels hollow in some aspects.
They don't even have a functional playtime log on the Switch, I heavily doubt we'll get achievements, closest thing are probably the NSO missions.

Don't think they will do that. The whole coins thing seems to be working out for them. Well at least for me lmao, get discounts on the e-shop for coins which is more I can say for achievements which is essentially just some digital trophy nobody gives a shit about.

Yeah, I’m doing perfectly fine without achievements on either Steam or Switch. Anything stupid and time-consuming I wanna do, I will do without having a digital trinket dangled at the end.

And before Nintendo implements an achievement system they should implement a proper playtime log.

this title screen is amazing

It's less about the dangling trinkets and more about challenges I probably haven't thought of, at least for me. If it weren't for trophies I probably wouldn't have bothered with the chalice dungeons in Bloodborne, they seemed too confusing and I was having enough fun replaying the main game.
I'm not going to say Ninty needs achievements, but I am curious what the totk devs would have come up with as silly ultrahand challenges, like trying to launch a construct off a sky island into a chasm. Granted I just came up with that but I wouldn't say no to some jumping off points.

I know that a lot the fanbase generally hates the idea of achievements and sees Nintendo's lack of them as a bonus rather than a negative, so there's not really much motivation on that front either.
I would take with a huge grain of salt what different fanbases on the internet say, because its often fanboy talk praising what there is on their system of choice and downplaying what isn't.

I was into achievements on 360 but grew out of them after a few years. Playstation has trophies that pop up but I largely don't even notice them. The Xbox Series S achievements are pretty obnoxious though. Not only do they have the classic ding but they also have some extended fanfare music that often plays over the game sound during cutscenes and the achievement icon pops up right over where subtitle text is. So I can't hear the dialogue and I can't ready the dialogue. I might just turn off achievement notifications entirely.

Ah, new thread-

Wait, what do you mean, "It's the 5th of August"? And why does it smell like ripe bananas?

Hope everyone has a fun August! I'll have time to play more games soon. Goals are to do more of the Mario event, play through Pikmin 4, play through Venba, and maybe finish TotK? Least September only has the Pikmin ports for me - if I was playing Starfield I'd have no time for anything else.

It sounds stupid, but once the XBOX One came along and they made their achievement images background images also, that's when I lost interest.

I do hear that line of thinking a lot, but doesn’t that mean you browse the achievements list beforehand to see what can be done in the game? That’s not for me personally, I like coming up with my own challenges and stupid stunts.

One other thing I dislike about a lot of current achievements is that they award you for inane stuff like “started the game”, “finished chapter one”, “jumped 100 times”. If there’s going to be an achievement system, make it a real challenge.

Well we got a major mecha(and Dynamic) vet writing Grendizer
The Xenoblade Chronicles 3 soundtrack is up on itunes for $45 for those interested and just shy of 9 hours long :)
I am tempted. But I want all 3 and it’ll have to wait till I have more budget

Let me tell you, achievements were the worst things to happen to multiplayer games. It's fine if being a doing dumb stuff while playing single player. But teammates aren't playing the most optimal way then they are trying to chase achievements that requires them to get three head shots in the air before hitting the ground while cooking a roast beef dinner in the real world.

I mean I'm sure people do, but it's something I leave until after. I don't love the whole "optimising runs" thing unless I've already played a few times.

I agree about pointless/general progress achievements though, unless it's a particularly difficult game. Beating Slave Knight Gael is challenge enough xD

From what I read, they had to spend an additional 4 months reshooting scenes for Secret Invasion. It sounds like it was a mess of a project all around which inevitably blows up the budget well beyond what was intended.
Jesus. Marvel has to stop reshooting projects and have a clear vision from the start. It's killing them.

Does anyone in this thread have a sense of how video game licensing for stuff like TV shows and movies work? For example, I was just watching a show where Mario Kart 8 Deluxe was featured prominently I think a few times (including once where it was the entire screen, if I remember correctly). And then a Switch was also shown being played. Does Nintendo pay for that kind of placement, or do shows have to pay (or at least get the rights) to feature products?

Yea, I’m good with Nintendo not implementing a global achievement system. If devs want to do them they’ve had no issue doing it since the DS era in the games themselves. And Nintendo has always been good about setting microchallenges with in-game rewards for most of their titles so I don’t think they see a need for something at the OS level

Eeeeeee! Game music nerds eating good right now with this (and DE) landing right after XVI

I was counting down the days for this and the Definitive Edition soundtrack release to hit iTunes. I've been slowly making my way through the 3 soundtrack over the past couple days. I hope that every time I buy these, Nintendo notices and thinks about it. As far as I'm aware, everything from the Xenoblade series except Xenoblade Chronicles X is now available for purchase and presumably streaming.

I applaud Monolith Soft for releasing their soundtracks like this, and I wish we got this for other franchises published by Nintendo. The Legend of Zelda would probably be my top pick, but Mario has some great music as well. I don't have a ton of experience with the series, but I figure the Pikmin series might have some good ambient tracks. I wish Nintendo would take a page out of Square Enix's playbook when it comes to how they handle music.
S-E has gotten annoying of late with their digital catalog unfortunately. Bravely Default II is up on Spotify but not iTunes. I can’t find Harvestella, Triangle Strategy, Octopath II anywhere right now in the US market. Completely sucks because they’ve been so good in the past.

Here's a prediction: A Switch version is coming as well, and it will be announced in an Indie World that happens around Gamescom
I think Mistwalker has enough clout that they’d drop news of this closer to TGS than Gamescom

I'm pretty sure that both can happen, also neither.
Like on Ted Lasso, Bowser said it was organic and not product placement.

Live a live isn’t on imusic either DX

Yeah, it seems very expensive and absolutely undesirable from a business perspective. Based on the plot of Secret Invasion, I wouldn't be surprised if world events led to the reshoots, though it really depends on when the initial shooting was completed.

Ah, I didn't know they were doing that. I hope those albums end up on the US iTunes soon. I wish media rights weren't so complicated in our current digital global era because things being locked to certain countries is frustrating when you can see it online and just are blocked from giving your money. I get that a global digital economy can be complicated (e.g., how people use regional pricing on Steam to get around their local prices), but I still wish something was figured out and streamlined.

That makes sense. The show I just watched felt mostly organic, though the brief fullscreen footage felt a little commercial-like. Of course, that could just have been the director's choice.

Only for purchase just like Xenoblade chronicles
Ohhh. Now I get what you meant about not being available in iMusic. I didn’t realize it was possible for items to be available for purchase but not the subscription service. That’s pretty lame!

We got the date for next spring, that's great. The kaiju in the vid looks good.

Does the Manga change later on?
I love Kaiju and started reading it but it kinda feels a little too light hearted and goofy and I lost interest.
Also the monsters weren't that special in the beginning and he is a small guy in his monster form anyway.

I want big guys fighting while destroying a city.

Had to abuse the rewind function for the Goron dance in Oracle of Ages. Horrible mandatory section for the main story.

I am up to date. While the lighthearted nature is still there, its mostly focused on character interaction. The story does get darker and more high stakes. My biggest complain at the moment would be the pacing of the current arc, specially since its bi-monthly.

In terms of big guys, sadly no, for now at least. Since its focus is on the extermination units and their members its more human vs kaiju.

Ok I have both Skyrim and Dragons Dogma in my backlog which should I play
Dragon's Dogma requires thought and is less open ended, so it depends if you just want to run around doing random stuff or a more story-driven challenge

Skyrim is just good fun to screw around in, and go do what you want whenever.

Dragon's Dogma is much more rigid and a bit unrelenting early on but the endgame/post game stuff is some of my favorite content in all of gaming.

I have never used or enjoyed achievements, meaning making them for my game will be uh. a very uninformed experience

what horrors do people like in an achievement?

also TotK should have one where you have to put a horse on a sky island

Ads make Evo almost unwatchable if you want to see a bunch of stuff. Every time you switch to the different channels, you get ads and often once those ads are done, it's an ad break in between matches. So you're watching ads to watch ads.
