DK Mountain and Dino Dino Jungle make it in because I like them both

DK Mountain shares music with DK Jungle because I like that music

You're welcome

I'm guessing the lack of sunset to night transition is because the engine does not support that sort of dynamic lighting change and a skybox transition which is unfortunate but they should've picked a different track. Tour can do it because it uses Unity and I would assume Unity supports that.
Fun Fact: Tour has its skybox system completely revamped just for Sunset Wilds.

That and the fact a piece of software tool base 8 running on was already outdated and no longer supported probably make it harder to revamp the skybox in 8 like Tour did.

Out of curiosity, is there any chance MOBMD isn't Madrid? Could it possibly be Mexico City or Mumbai, with the D standing for the second part of the track name?

Wave 6 guesses:

Acorn Cup:
Tour Madrid Mile / GCN DK Mountain / SNES Bowser's Castle 3 / Pirahna Plant Cove

Spiny Cup:
Tour Rome Avanti / DS Airship Fortress / Pirahna Plant Pipeline / Wii Rainbow Road

Characters: Diddy Kong and Funky Kong

Of the two nitros I have a feeling it will be Cove that ends the Acorn Cup given its a section track, leaving Pipeline to be in the Spiny Cup. But I also think the Spiny Cup nitro will be given the distinction of being the penultimate track before Wii Rainbow Road instead of Bowser's Castle/Airship Fortress, similar to how Merry Mountain in Wave 3 was placed right before 3DS Rainbow Road.

Three-starred the six new cups and beat the new 150cc time trials ghosts, so now's as good a time as any for my opinions:

Tour Athens Dash - One of the better Tour courses in this game. Interesting layout with lots of good turns and verticality, though some of the turns are tough to see coming. I don't really notice the background textures, so I've got nothing to complain about.

GCN Daisy Cruiser - This course has consistently been pretty solid and it still is here. The floating Goombas in the pool are a great touch, especially on 200cc, where the extra air off the ramps makes them easier to hit. A certifiable classic.

Wii Moonview Highway - The traffic getting nerfed really sucks, but there's enough of a risk of boosting through a blind turn or taking a ramp into an oncoming car that the course still works. The bomb cars are great and I wish they could get backported to the other traffic courses.

Squeaky Clean Sprint - Extremely impressed by this course. The course design uses the aesthetic well, and the track itself drives great. Getting the extra speed in the drainpipe helps a lot keep the track fast-paced, and there's a lot of variety in how you can approach it.

Tour Los Angeles Laps - The visuals aren't great, especially around the oil fields, but it's got a solid layout and tries harder than a lot of other city courses to keep the surrounding landscape interesting. Some parts are kind of boring, but that's what happens when they've got to fill out three different laps.

GBA Sunset Wilds - Gonna have to echo everyone pointing out that it's dumb to have this without its gimmick. Also is the fourth GBA course in the DLC to put a ramp in right before the finish line? Hard to see the merit in including five GBA courses when so many are nerfed.

Wii Koopa Cape - Honestly, Koopa Cape is a strong enough track that it's hard to mess up a conversion of it that badly. I'm just glad this one got scaled to be a little smaller than a little bigger; the course feels tight, and the tunnel is a great ride on 200cc.

Tour Vancouver Velocity - I feel the same about this one as I did Singapore. It's another flashy night course that's extremely linear and doesn't have much going on under all the lights. At least there's a decent shortcut on lap 2, which I suppose is enough for me to put it over Singapore.

Finally got around to play these courses, work has been hell this week

Athens Dash: The course suffers from the biggest problems the city tracks suffer, but a bit worse. It's very hard to read and the paths overlapping make the course feel confusing and samey, I can't get a good grasp of it and it all just feels like a blur (ironically, Tokyo Blur doesn't feel like that for me, and unlike most people I like it because I can get a spatial feel of it and understand where I'm going at every lap). Even with these issues, Athens Dash still manages to be better than most city courses because it's very distinct. I could see it being a regular MK course vaguely based on Greek temples, kinda like the desert courses are obviously based on Egypt even if they aren't actually supposed to be it.

Daisy Cruiser - I didnt play much DD or MK7 so this course is basically new for me, and damn, it's very good. It's distinct, has a great layout, great obstacles, and just works very well overall. A very solid design and an all-around great track to drive at.

Moonview Highway - I don't understand everyone's complaints about this course, I absolutely love it! Best course in the wave, for sure. It looks great, flows great, feels exciting, and god, that music. I didn't mind the light traffic at all, in fact I even hit a car running against the CPU, the track is already tricky so I think it would be too difficult online if it had more traffic. Hell of a glow up from the Wii version, amazing course.

Squeaky Clean Sprint - Just like most of the new courses except from Ninja Hideaway, I think this is solid but it didn't rock my world or anything. It's an interesting setting, but I feel the track is still a bit too basic to be a new course, I can't imagine it being among the original MK8 courses for example. It's competent and nice to drive at, but if it wasn't new I don't think it would be anyone's favorite right now.

LA Laps - I love this track! It's definitely my favorite city track now (previously it would have been Singapore, I guess? I really don't know, don't care that much about any of them except LA). It looks wonderful, I love the summer vibes, reminds me of Toad's Harbor but I think it's even better. I think what works in this track is that there's very little overlapping between the different paths, so it kinda feels like a one way track. I think tracks work when they have defined laps or are one way, being a weird mix of both like the cities just feels confusing. LA Laps gets it right, though.

Sunset Wilds - I'm sad everyone is disappointed at the track, I kinda love it! No surprise since it was always one of my favorites on the GBA, but I was expecting to be underwhelmed after reading the impressions. But nope, still love it, you just can't beat that music and visuals. The layout is pretty good and it looks great (except for that super reflective mud that I'm still not sure what it's supposed to be). It's really a shame it doesn't feature the sunset because it could have been one of the best tracks of the DLC if it did. I wouldn't even mind having it getting darker each lap like the GBA, but idk how feasible that would be with online.

Koopa Cape - Been a while since I played this one, I never liked it much on the Wii, but here it kinda feels more exciting? It's a very fast track, sometimes almost feels like the F-zero courses. I like how it smartly places all the half pipes, I'm actually using them for once. It's a very tricky course and 200cc online will be hell, but still very fun nonetheless.

Vancouver Velocity - The course itself doesn't do anything wrong, it's a good show and a competent city course, but the music elevates it so much! I love its Street Fighter 3 vibe. The ice skating arena always surprises me. Good course, glad we have it.

I think overall this might be the most consistent wave so far. It doesn't have a heavy hitter like Waluigi's Pinball or 3DS Rainbow Road, but it doesn't have any duds either, which most past waves did. All courses are fun in their own right and I could see Feather Cup being an original MK cup, it's a balanced and varied selection that doesn't have anything that feels like filler.

I played VS races against CPUs, playing as Kamek with the pipe frame kart, with custom items to remove anything that wasn't in Mario Kart 64, and exclusively on N64 courses to imagine a world where Kamek was never removed from Mario Kart 64.
This is the way.

Just tell me the meta please, cause every youtuber has a different opinion
it's still Yoshi Teddy/Inkstriker with Villager class thrown in

i'm personally using Teddy Mario but i'd do anything for them to buff Scooty and bring this vehicle back into the meta. i'm still switching between Wario Scooty and the Teddy because these new ones just don't feel as good.

is there a way to take the top route on 200cc SCS consistently without the toilet boost? been trying this one in time trials and I've been having trouble getting it on all three laps

I thought it was weird to ditch the glider ramp in Koopa Cape for no real reason, but I agree that Koopa Cape overall just feels cramped (I was also hoping that they would bring back the koopa head sign at the beginning, but I can live without that).
Hard disagree on that first part

That glider ramp in Koopa cape was a completely stupid addition in MK7 and I'm glad the BCP devs finally removed it. Huge improvement.
You're supposed to be driving in the river current, not gliding over it. That's like gliding over a ton of cars in a traffic course. It's stupid and defeats the point of that section.

I agree with this version of the course feeling a little small but it's only a little small and I'd rather have this than an overscaled version.

With all the tracks we have now, I think we can create fun personalised themed cups !

  • Trip Cup : Toad's Turnpike, Sunshine Airport, Super Bell Subway, Daisy Cruiser
  • Water Cup : Water Park, Koopa Cape, Dolphin Shoals, Boo Lake
  • Mountain Cup : Choco Mountain, Rock Rock Mountain, Merry Mountain, Mount Wario
  • Forest Cup : Riverside Park, DK Jungle, Maple Treeway, Wild Woods

If we get Wii Rainbow Road you could make a Rainbow cup.

Man I wish the let you set presets for things like that

I'd love to able to do custom lists like this.

Yeah, it’s kinda odd that they never brought back and expanded upon the concept of custom Grand Prix from Mario Kart 7. It was only used for StreetPass there, but it was still really cool to be able to create your own custom Grand Prix, and the potential for it would be so much greater in MK8D with all the courses we have now!

I guess the reason it’s not a thing is probably because you can just choose any four courses in a row anyway, so without something like StreetPass to give a purpose for having it actually structured as a custom Grand Prix that you’d share with others there’s not much point.

I think there's actually enough that you could do an all Mario Circuit cup now, which is kinda neat. Base game had it's own original Mario Circuit and the one from GBA, and the BCP added one from SNES and the DS one.

It'd be really cool if, as part of the last wave, they add some kind of custom cup maker since there's so much to work with now. And if they want to get real crazy, maybe also add the all-cup tour from Double Dash just to put a neat little bow on things.

Two features I'd love:
  • Being able to make your own custom cups (plus, there are already plenty of icons ready to be used in tournament mode!)
  • Being able to choose an option on VS mode where you play the tracks in the chronological order of games, and in the order of the cups of each game, so starting with SNES and finishing with Tour and the BCP nitros. It would be super relevant given the number of retro tracks in the game. To illustrate, currently, it would look like this:
SNES Mario Circuit 3
SNES Donut Plains 3
SNES Rainbow Road
N64 Kalimari Desert
N64 Toad's Turnpike
...
Yoshi’s Island
Squeaky Clean Sprint

I hope they give us a round setter with as much freedom as the custom items. Imo there really is no need for the current preset for the number of rounds. Just allow free choice between 1 and 99 rounds

Lmao I agree. I hate that so much.

Custom cups would really shine with custom rule sets. Pick the speed, CPU difficulty, and item selections, and then share them online.

Finally got to playing Wave 5, solid wave and my favorite. All the tracks were enjoyable, though Los Angeles and Vancouver had some sections that were a bit boring I guess. Moonview and Sunset I didnt really care about before but play very well here and surprised at how much I liked them.

Those are gone since 2011 almost 12 years ago, compared to the 3 years that were there.
Let it go people, at this point not being there is more synonymous to the track than having those on lol.
Just because Mario Kart 7 came out it doesn't mean everyone switched over to that from Wii.
Some people don't even game on handhelds and I'd argue people that regularly play Tour are an anomaly.

So no, just because a different version of the track came out 3 years after in handheld game doesn't mean not having the spinners is "more synonymous" with it.

Playing a bit more, I think this is my favorite wave so far. It's just quality, every track feels exciting in its own ways and then you have sensational tracks like Moonview, Koopa Cape and LA Laps that elevate the whole thing to another level. Moonview is my favorite and I think it's up there with the best tracks in the whole game.

I think these tracks overall have the perfect combination of excellent music, good sense of speed, and interesting visuals. They're really a joy to play, both cups flow really well.

It may be an unpopular opinion, but I really like this version of Koopa Cape, as much as the Wii one. The orange rocks are less annoying than on Rock Rock Mountain. A more colourful look for Koopa Cape goes well with the aura it gives off, the original was a bit dull. Here we have the coloured blocks on the sides at the beginning, and even the red ramps from Tour, I think they are well integrated for once.
I much prefer a version without the glider, and I don't really miss the green lightning. I'd still prefer a version with water in the tube, but I have to say that it happens pretty quickly with 8D's gameplay so it's not really a problem.
What I'd criticise it for is having a halfpipe, especially as it doesn't even get you out of the water like Tour.

I agree with you. I like this version about as much as the original despite their differences. Really happy the glider is gone. The metallic koopa shells really stand out. I wish the underwater section had something of an obstacle - if not the lightning zappers then maybe cheep cheeps - but not a big deal

The track has been like that for 10+ years i mean... that people being or not there to play it doesn't matter or mean its not like that.
The fact is that the track has more time without the lighting than with it.
And wow good old "handhelds don't matter", phone games i do understand especially Mario kart tour haha.
