I’m sure Intelligent Systems is being greatly assisted by KT and/or Tose on FE4R. Internal staff numbers don’t tell the whole story.
Yes, that's what I'm saying at the end of my post. I don't doubt the next Fire Emblem has been in the works and is nearly done. I don't think IS did it on their own, though.

Would you say it's likely to be a new title like Three Houses or rather a remake (which is what most of the fanbase seem to expect, a remake of Fire Emblem 4)? If you can tell at all, of course.

I don't know a whole lot about the game.

The only thing I know is another studio provided assistance/help to Intelligent Systems with developing the game. That might explain how IS were able to develop it in a timely manner.

Sounds great! I’m missing new games from the Mario Kart and 3D Mario team though… shouldn’t they also have titles ready next year?

I'm only aware of projects that my sources know about. Sometimes my sources aren't aware of everything Nintendo is working on.

(I'm sorry you have to get a notification for my ramblings Emily; if anything this is all just being directed into the void and I don't wish any ill-negativity on anyone)

I had a hunch this may have been the case and it's kind of my fear.

The only games from this list that are truly compelling me are Zelda and Bayonetta. Pokemon should be fun pending reviews, Kirby and Advance Wars have my curiosity but I doubt they'll be my GOTYs, Fire Emblem has never turned my crank, if I couldn't get obsessed with Splatoon by now I doubt it'll ever happen, and I've yet to finish M+R/let alone buy Octopath Traveller. Casual game is entirely dependent on if it's Ring Fit Adventure 2 or not, and that's just because I want a version of the game that's not tied exclusively to a physical cartridge. Hell I still don't know why I can't get RFA as a free download on the eshop if I already paid $90 for the ring con and legstrap

I really need those left field games from Nintendo's AAA series. I want to see sequels to franchises who either had their start or haven't been seen since Gamecube. Hell, if StarFox 64 Zero (as an example) still wasn't the right attempt after the fourth remake, then I'd want to see them go back to Adventure or Assault for a remake/remaster. Maybe the magic is somewhere in those games.

I recognize this isn't even that bad of a lineup for 2022, and so many more people than me would be ecstatic even if some games listed got pushed to early 2023, but as specific as my tastes can be it's even harder to find anything that can remotely scratch the itches I have. The last time I felt something close to that were the new levels added to Pikmin 3 Deluxe

I think it's very likely to be Koei Tecmo again, as they co-developped (but really, developped most of it) Fire Emblem: Three Houses. Thanks for the insight!

No Ms Pac-Man is a huge bummer. Figure it out with Midway already Namco (or let go of the ego that you didn’t develop the best version). Enough in here to make me buy it as I love this series.
The issue with Ms. Pac-Man is not even with Midway anymore (as they actually don't exist for a while, and many of their original IPs are owned by WB Games now), but with ATGames (I heard it was solved little while ago, so who knows.. they could eventually sell it as DLC..)

Bamco actually got a pretty good streak on re-releasing Ms. Pac-Man a while back, including the previous Pac-Man Museum on 360, PS3 and Steam (albeit as a DLC for the compilation), and they do own the character (as she appears in Pac-Land, including the stage in Smash4 and Ultimate, and she was even playable in Sonic Dash).. it's just the game itself that is always cursed to be in a weird place.

And seeing the little statues in the mini Hub room on Museum +, they seem to have a Ms. Pac-Man figure right there, so there's that lol

Ride? Singular? That document lists Zelda as being it's own land with multiple rides and attractions. Fuck me dead yall, I might actually set foot in Florida someday.
I like Florida when you completely ignore anything political and how insane there governor is. Its nice and warm, and Universal Studios is awesome.

Otherwise, Florida sucks, but this might push me to go back

Kirby & the Forgotten Land rated by ESRB.

I need this game yesterday. I've waited so long for a 3D Kirby game and we're finally getting it.

Intelligent Systems usually always has other studios provide assistance for Fire Emblem titles. Happen with Fates and I believe a bit with SOV as well.

So most likely we won’t know exactly what the title is. But guessing with the short release window (assuming it’s a 2022 title). Im gonna guess it’s a remake. New titles have gotten over a year in reveal and release

So assuming no delays for major titles like BotW2, Bayo 3, or XB3, this looks like which teams could be closest to having titles ready for 2023. (Forgive me for large speculative rambling :p)

Retro Studios: Hopefully Prime 4 is done in 2023.

Grezzo: They had Link's Awakening in fall 2019 and the Miitopia port in spring of this year. Recently they've been hiring for a new game.

Good Feel: Last we saw of them was on Yoshi's Crafted World in early 2019. Hopefully they're still working with Nintendo.

Next Level Games: Really curious to see what they're doing. Last we saw them was LM3 multiplayer updates back in spring 2020.

EPD8: Aside from remasters of 3D World and Captain Toad with NST co-developing, they will have been MIA on an original production for 6 years since Odyssey if we don't see them in 2022. Don't know if they had a canceled project akin to Retro, or are targeting a new hardware launch, or what happened.

EPD9: After ARMS in 2017 their major work was Tour which launched in 2019. Can't imagine its taken major development resources after 2020 though given Tour's low revenue and small playerbase. So maybe 2023 we see them again.

EPD10: They have Big Brain Academy this year, along with Pikmin 3's remaster in 2020. (With Eighting) Their most notable work was Mario Maker 2, which got its final free update in spring 2020. So we could see 2D Mario sometime soon?

really good to read this, very interesting and thank you for sharing this precious insight.

tbf, the OG Xenoblade Chronicles and the 2020 Remale both released between the end of May and the beginning of June, i wonder if XC£ could possibly share the same release window.

I suppose you don't have anything to share about this supposedly upcoming Donkey Kong game, I really hope that it's in development.

overall, 2022 sounds incredible on paper.

Nintendo's 2022 software lineup is exciting but that excitement is, for me, overshadowed by the hype spectre of new hardware. Like I see games like Splatoon 3 and BOTW2 and I cannot help but think "imagine how good they're gonna look on that new hardware baby!!!"

Hotter take: EXP and level growth isn't really necessary in any game (maybe in pokémon because it's cool to see them evolve). It just makes everything grindier and more boring. It's ubiquitous now and a requirement of every game because our lizard brains love seeing the little numbers go up.
I'm resurrecting this discussion because it's interesting and I want to talk/rant a bit about it

So, EXP and level growth is, imo, typically best when it's either A. tied to actively learning new skills and abilities/shaking up the gameplay and/or B. a background element that you never need to engage with. Which is, imo, usually the case. If you're grinding in a modern RPG, you're doing things wrong. So why include it at all? Well, A should be obvious, it lets you parcel out gameplay changes over time in a way that the player feels like they're earning them. B is less obvious, but it does allow you to extend the adventure and create a sense of getting stronger over time even if you're not actively engaging with the systems. And hell, "lizard brain likes numbers go up" is still a valid reason to include something in an entertainment medium.

Now, I think where EXP goes from "a good thing to have" to "necessary" is with turn-based combat, which is why it's brought up so much in the PM:TOK discussion. You can get away with not having EXP in a real-time system by making the act of combat more intrinsically satisfying in its own right, and by having other methods of progression (for example, BoTW has you find stronger weapons, action games have you unlock new moves using currency). But in a turn-based systems where any given action is less intrinsically satisfying and combat is much longer on average, going through a long combat and ending up with nothing in return doesn't feel great, even if the combat itself is excellent. And it's not really a question of "I have no reason to go and fight enemies" it's more "if I end up fighting enemies, I'm getting nothing out of it".

So in terms of PM:TOK in particular, since it did start this discussion, you'll enter a long turn based combat/puzzle thing and end up with only coins as your reward, which yeah have some value but it's not readily apparent what that value is (which is something an EXP bar shows intrinsically). So entering combat feels strictly like a punishment you're getting nothing out of. Now, on the flip side, adding experience to PM:TOK is actually pretty hard to do with the combat, since there isn't really any way to meaningfully change things up over time with the current combat philosophy. They kinda got stuck with no EXP being the best route once they chose to have a puzzle combat system, since adding EXP as is probably wouldn't improve the combat and would probably make it even more tedious. So in the case of PM:TOK, the problem isn't really that it doesn't have EXP, imo, but more that the combat doesn't really lend itself to that sort of progression as well as being kinda tedious after a while.

Im almost sure BOTW 2 will be a dane launch title, they really need a big game to launch with it.

y'know I'm beginning to think that Mario Kart Tour is taking up all of EPD9's time

Yeah I'm in the camp that Tour took up everything they had after 2017. If they had a lower budget "B project" in the works during Tour's development, I feel like we wouldve heard something about it by now...

Anyways Tour did have a huge amount of post launch content in its first year, but by the fall of 2020 it had noticeably dried up. Maybe around then they started shifting focus to a new project?

I think there is a Mario Kart 9 (or 10 or whatever it's called) but there's no need to push it out now. The continued success of MK8 and the Switch itself means there isn't a need to push it to boost sales. They can work on it quietly in the background and release it when they need to like at the launch of a new system.

If we see Wario Land come back (hopefully we do eventually) then yeah I imagine Good Feel (they made Shake It) or maybe Next Level Games would be up to the task.

I suggested on Twitter that WayForward should take a shot at Wario Land, but not everyone seemed to be into the idea.

I mean, Captain Syrup (Wario Land) looks like a character that came out of the Shantae series.

Shantae and Wario Land both have that pirate them going on.

They would totally nail the art of it. Hopefully Advance Wars is just the start of their relationship with Nintendo.

Captain Syrup has so much potential. Wish they did more with that character. I loved it when they referenced her in New Horizons.

don't give Nintendo fans such power

Really? Wario was the biggest aspiration by fans when Nintendo do that “see a new game by way forward” on Twitter thing back in 2020.

Or maybe I’m forgetting. 2020 was too long of a year to remember everything

I think it's very likely to be Koei Tecmo again, as they co-developped (but really, developped most of it) Fire Emblem: Three Houses. Thanks for the insight!
If it's Koei Tecmo, I really hope they improve the presentation in the next game. I'm not a graphics obsessive, but Three Houses really suffered from some low res backdrops, engine stutters and general limitations that, for me at least, hindered some of the cutscenes and storytelling.

Other devs are out there making Strategy RPGs with some real visual razzamatazz (see War of Genesis: Remnants of Gray), and even on Switch the Mario x Rabbids games manage to look absolutely top notch. I really hope now that Fire Emblem has established itself as a Nintendo mainstay, they can start putting a bit more money into the presentation and keeping up with what other games in the genre are doing.

Please no. They are right that's a really bad match.

WayForward is a talented studio but platformers are not their stronger suit. They're best at more arcade stuff: Beat em ups and run n guns. 2D Wario games should be handled by a master of the craft. I'm not sure who that is today but I can safely say even GoodFeel was not enough for the job.

Were I in less of a bleh mood I'd be more willing to go through previous posts to piece together what suggestions people have made to narrow down the selection, but today has been draining even before noon and I doubt it's going to change lol

Alternatively this could just be from not having any room to continue my ring fit workouts with recent changes in my living space, but c'est la vie. I hope that in whatever sequel may materialize in RFA2, they do something about changing the way mountain climbers are registered by the sensors. I don't mind doing them, but I at least want to be rewarded when I know I'm doing them right

Wait, it wasn't publicly known that this was made in Unity? That's surprising. I had heard about this a month ago...
nah. at least I haven't heard about it, and I try to keep up with this

I thought it was known it was made with Unity since the Pokémon presents a few months back. At least I read it on Era back then
Nintendo doesn't talk about which engines are used for their games, so they wouldn't bring it up. I don't recall any post about it

It's been known in this thread for at least a fortnight

Or at the very least I've known

my god, some of us correctly guessed the casual sequel that may or may not be stinker horseperson?
