Having a weird problem, trying to download Pikmin 4 demo and thrice now I’ve come back to my Switch sporting an orange screen. Had to hard reboot. What’s up with that?
Yeah, that's happened to me twice or thrice already as well, which I had never happen with the OG Switch. It seems to be mostly a thing on Swoleds. Weird.

You have perhaps wondered why Pikmin 4 has in some of its trailers shown an in-game Gameboy Advance and not some newer hardware, but it was simply added there early in the game's development, when it still was the newest handheld system around.

Unfortunately mine is an OG Switch haha. I'm gonna try downloading the demo once I get home, but maybe it's a sign that I shouldn't buy Pikmin lol

Look man, the internet gods have spoken

I’d be willing to test the theory out if someone gave me the dough lol

I have the bucks, but i'm waiting for:

It is downright ridiculous how nice Mario Kart 8 still looks for a 9 year old game built for hardware that was underpowered even back then.
Really shows there's more to graphics than raw horsepower; art direction and optimization can be just as important, if not more so.

Yeah, for some reason MK8 still manages to impress me visually, especially when I haven't played it in a while. Seriously timeless art style.

Pikmin 4 demo still refuses to download on my Switch, which is odd since I tried redownloading an archived game and that worked fine. What gives?

I’m looking forward to the next Nintendo system just as much as everyone else, but at the same time Switch (and really the Wii U even) I feel like we’ve hit the “good enough” point of the graphics power curve. I think Nintendo has been absolutely right to bow out of the hardware arms race even if it’s cost them access to certain third party releases.

But maybe I’m just easily impressed and really should upgrade off my decade or more old 1080p display?

annapurna showcase today! so, for the third year in a row, I find myself 100% certain that today is the day we’ll find out when Outer Wilds is coming to switch

actually this time I’m 150% certain

Tears of the Kingdom has overtaken Xenoblade 2 on my most playtime rankings. Only Xenoblade 3 and Fire Emblem: Three Houses are above. Xenoblade 3 had the benefit of the DLC to extend the playtime and Three Houses had DLC plus I did three playthroughs. If there is DLC, I think TotK can surpass Xenoblade 3 but Three Houses would be tough since that has several dozen hours more playtime above the the rest. But for a single playthrough of a campaign, TotK would probably me my longest playthrough of a game ever.
Breath of the Wild was my most played game. Until Pokemon Scarlet came around. And I haven’t even finished the Pokedex, plus I’m gonna purchase both DLCs

Look man I was already impressed with sprites on the SNES, everything afterwards is dollops of gravy

Ah, so it seems today is the day I decide whether to buy Outer Wilds on Steam or wait for Switch

This can't be real, no way some people just up and decided to mash two of my favorite Final Fantasies together

AHHHHH

This week is pretty much an overkill for me on Switch with Lara Croft, AEW Fight Forever, Enclave, Rain Code and possibly Ghost Trick but if they shadow drop Outer Wilds, it'll become my top priority. I'm not hopeful though, I predict sometime like October or November.

There's also Solar Ash that's recently been leaked.

I just realized I'll be at a doctor's appointment when it's happening 😅

Hopefully it'll be worth watching when I get back! I'm keeping my fingers crossed for more details on The Lost Wild and a release date for Thirsty Suitors (and any/all information for Lorelei and the Laser Eyes)

For some reason I thought the Ghost Trick remaster is getting a physical release. I was going to double dip but I guess I can wait for a sale then.

Hey Square, since it's been revealed that FF16 is a financial disaster and you're on the verge of going out of business, how about you the Pixel Remasters Collection on sale so you can afford to eat tomorrow?

Or physical, available at all retailers, for a normal, non stupidly-high price like on your online shop?

It isn't. It's neither a flop nor a breakout success but somewhere in the middle.
That's still not a good place to be if your franchise has historically prided itself on being the crown jewel of a genre

As I said in another thread:
And lastly, I do think Final Fantasy is no longer the de facto RPG series for a lot of people like it was in the 90s. We’ve seen a number of smaller franchises like SMT/Persona, Xenoblade, Fire Emblem, Tales of, and Falcon’s myriad series all step up since the end of the PS2 era when FF really started to stumble. Not to mention the Xbox and Xbox 360 really opening up Western RPGs to people who had never heard of BioWare, Bethesda, or CD Projeckt since they never gamed on a PC before. There’s plenty of other options for people who want to get their RPG these days and Square no longer dominates the space like they did in the 90s. It’s a lot easier to skip FF games and not feel like you’re missing out on “the next big thing”.

Oh yeah, I absolutely agree with that. We won't really know what SE's aims for FFXVI were but it looks like it most likely won't be the big "comeback" for the IP.

I'm gonna be super late to the Pikmin 4 party because I'm in the Canadian Rockies for three weeks from the 21st onwards. rip in peace me
Ahh, it'll still be fun! Do some stargazing while you can out there, that mountain range is glorious (and I can't remember if it's in Banff or Jasper but there's a breakfast restaurant inside a hotel but they do this amazing banana bread french toast that is simply ✨divine✨)

Thanks! We're passing both Banff and Jasper so I'll definitely keep an eye out for that, it sounds amazing.

Fingers crossed for you, honestly it felt life-changing to me, but that also could have been because I was still reeling from my first experience in the Rockies at the time back in 2016 haha

My friends and I also stopped in this little thrift store in Banff, came across the CD soundtrack to Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure for $3 so that was our tunes for the rest of the drive to Vancouver that trip. Damn good times.

Switch software fairly well-represented on Metacritic's top 20 for the first half of the year. Titles available or soon to be available on Switch in bold:

20 - Doomblade
19 - Age of Wonders 4
18 - Labrynth of Galleria: The Moon Society
17 - Cassette Beasts
16 - [redacted - launching in Switch later this year]
15 - The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog
14 - Octopath Traveler II
13 - A Space for the Unbound
12 - Humanity
11 - Paranormasight: The Seven Mysteries of Honjo
10 - Star Wars: Jedi Survivor
9 - Diablo IV
8 - Hi-Fi Rush
7 - Theatrhythm Final Bar Line
6 - Final Fantasy XVI
5 - Dead Space
4 - Street Fighter 6
3 - Resident Evil 4 Remake
2 - Metroid Prime Remastered
1 - The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

9 out of 20 available on Switch, which isn't bad at all. Of those 9, I've completed Metroid Prime Remastered and A Space for the Unbound, am 150 hours deep into Zelda, have Octopath Traveler 2 in my 'to play' list and have Paranormasight and Cassette Beasts on my wishlist.

What's also funny in a year of hotly anticipated new titles is seeing 3 re-releases in the top 5. Be interesting to see where things stand at the end of the year - will Pikmin 4, Super Mario RPG and Super Mario Bros Wonder break into the top 20? Will anything dethrone Zelda?

I'm really happy to see A Space for the Unbound on this list!

I think this is underselling it tbh. It got strong critical acclaim and good first week sales - 3 million copies sold in a week is a position most devs would kill to be in. That's not even accounting for the fact that it's an exclusive to a platform with only ~40m units sold, or that it is a $70 game, both of which would have had some effect on sales (how much of an effect is unclear and likely not something we'll ever know, but certainly there was some effect).

The issue is one of perception. Square almost certainly hoped it would sell better than what it did, and as you and others have discussed, it certainly isn't The Main RPG Series anymore, and the sales reflect that. But I think saying it's somewhere in the middle of a breakout success and a flop kind of implies that it's near to halfway point between the two extremes, when it's really nowhere near a flop.
