Pre-Release Super Mario Bros. Wonder — Pre-release Discussion Thread

We are seeing more of this at Gamescom with Tezuka or Amano as I predicted weeks ago, it will probably be playable there too. Another trailer before that too.

When i watched the Mario Movie i was depressed that we would return to the lifeless (in comparison) worlds of the Mario games. The film was brimming with terrific environments that made the games look so safe by comparison.
So you can imagine my shock that a 2D mario game, known for their lack of creativity, would be the one to hit that spot. I still cant believe it lol.

Just look at that, gorgeous. We need stuff like this on the next 3D Mario game.

3D Mario already looked hella creative, look at Mario Odyssey. They're not gonna go back to the more safe look of 3D World.

The first few seconds of impressions from me were not too good, actually. Wasn’t a big fan of the visuals (though they have grown on me) or music.

Then the mad ideas started rolling in, one by one… by one.

This has potential written all over it. Can turn out SO good. Mario as a series thrives on just ideas, ideas and ideas. It’s what made Galaxy and 3D World truly ascend in my eyes, and Wonder looks like it could be the same situation. It’s like with Super Mario World - a game where nothing makes sense, to the points of things actually making sense instead. Like, it defies logic so much that it doubles back and becomes logic itself. Wonder feels like it truly follows suit here, and I love it.

One thing i am curious about that i haven't seen a lot of people talk about is this particular scene:

To Donkey Kong fans, this might seem a bit familiar!

Makes me wonder if the silhouette aesthetic of that particular level in Mario Wonder is part of nabbing a wonder seed or just part of the levels aesthetic.

Really hoping for the latter, which could open the door to even more cool stylized levels.

Mario by retro studios

is there any truth to these Charles recasting conspiracy or is it just bs?

Mind you, i watched the Direct muted (because i was in office at that time) and only saw the Wonder trailer with sound later on, so i can't say anything about the new Warioware game.

But for me, it's definitely Martinet as Mario in the Wonder trailer.

definitely wonder drugseed. You can see tripping frame at the corners

edit: wait, no, I think we see light switch block? so silhouette can be aesthetic and stretch thing are tripping effect

You know the most insane thing of this game?
This is only the first trailer which is usually the "safe" trailer that introduces the basics of the game while keeping most of its secrets and cool stuff for the second trailer (just look at 3d world and odyssey first and second trailer).
We still haven't seen anything and it already looks crazy.

The world map and backdrops are gorgeous. I'm not sure why but something about the front plane still looks a bit too NSMBish.

Weird Mario is always the best Mario.

Also I am trying to place my finger on what the art style reminders me of. It’s obviously 2.5 but the models also have a flatness that make them feel like 2D images.
Think hard, you can do it.
I can’t put my finger on it, but something about SMB Wonder just feels off to me. I’m gonna need to see more. Cause right now I don’t know if I like what they showed.
Yep. It’s something. Not sure. I’ve watched the trailer many times.

Watching this trailer kinda reminds me of what I liked about 3D World. That game always felt fairly fresh with every new level it gave you.

All these people praising the new art style... am I blind? I can barely see any changes!

Level design looked fun, though. I'm sure it'll be great. Just looked nowhere near the kind of "next generation of 2d Mario" evolution I expected. I don't know if I was expecting hand-drawn art or sprites or what, but... this really just looked like more NSMB to me.
It has more details, more personality than NSMB, imo. But it is still not hand drawn 2d with black outlines like for example

(I seem to remember seeing a similar Mario fan game, but I can't find it right now, but you get the idea).

So maybe that is what it is missing. I still like the look though.

I don't want to be mean, but you might need to look at the footage closer. This version of Mario is way closer to the 2D renditions of him in promotional artwork. It has been pointed before, but the characters are also showing a lot of squash and stretch that was just missing from previous iterations of the New series. They are taking artistic considerations with Mario that have been missing from everything aside the Mario & Luigi series.

FWIW 3D Land and 3D World already implemented silhouette sections in certain underground stages.

A lot of the set pieces do seem Donkey Kong country inspired though.
It's too much in this art style and looks bad
I really disagree, but I'm not sure this is something we can get to an objective truth on. A Mario game that emulated the art style of Kotabe's artwork was always the pipe dream for me, and this is as close as they have ever gotten to it.

Just YouTubers wanting clicks.

Arlo convinced that Mario saying "Wonderful!" in the Japanese trailer sounds nothing like Charles. I watched it and it couldn't sound any more like Martinet.
I think people are getting thrown off with that talking flower cause I think the voice of the flower and mario mix lmao.
Does anyone else get the feeling this will be absolutely packed with secrets?
Probably. There is more room for secrets with the time limit being taken away. I expect a good amount of secrets since they have Mario tripping on acid lol

Showing Elephant Peach and Elephant Daisy probably would be considered unsafe tbh.

Nitpick: Flagpoles are one small thing I wish weren't here. For the longest time, they were a thing exclusive to SMB1 and its standalone expansion pack sequel. Then New Super Mario Bros. used them to harken back to the original, which like everything else in NSMB meant it got spread across 4 games. That plus using it in 3D Land/World has blown the flagpole way the hell out of proportion as being a necessary series staple. Mix it up.

I really don't know how someone would consider this game too similar to the new super mario games. Like just a simple comparison of the 2 announcement trailers of new super mario bros U e mario bros wonder and it's night and day.

I don't know why people are thinking it's no longer Charles Martinet doing the voice. Unless they found someone who sounds literally exactly like Charles Martinet, it's 100% him.

these trailers make me realize how poor the trailer is for NSMBU, why is it so slowwwwwww compared to the Wonder trailer

We can see the mushroom kingdom in the background of the first level. I guess the flower kingdom is the neighboring kingdom of the mushroom kingdom.
I guess the story might be that Bowser is terrorizing Marios neighbors and the Mario gang is trying to help them. Maybe we will see the flower kingdom equivalent to Mario and Peach (we already saw a toad-looking NPC at the end of the level).
Would be awesome if it was SMB3-like where each world had a ruler

Man, the complete lack of energy in the NSMBU trailer is striking - even disregarding how much more alive the Wonder trailer feels in comparison.

I booted up nsmbu after yesterdays announcement, and man, ive beaten that game before, but it’s boring and safe as sin. Wonder looks to be much more interesting thankfully

Mario is finally freed from the shackles of the New series artstyle, so long partner ! You won't be missed.

That trailer was terrific, easy day one.

Metroid Dread is a more recent example of this as well (even has the same announcement and release time frame!). The first trailer for that looked sublime, but it showed barely anything of the game compared to later trailers.
