Pre-Release Super Mario Bros. Wonder — Pre-release Discussion Thread

It won't be that, trailer has footage of both Peach and Daisy working together in multiplayer. Also, Bowser's Flying Castle seems to intoxicate the world in general. When you reache flagpoles, you desintoxicate it and possibly free those new NPCs?

Good point. Maybe Bowser’s bit in this game is to damage the world instead of kidnapping

I wish they got this out a week or two earlier instead of the same day as Spider-man 2, damn. I'll probably just hop on this in November then unless I end up juggling the two of them.

Can anyone tell from the trailer or details if the playable characters will each have their own physics and gameplay (like SMB2/3DW) or not (like the New series)?

Bowser’s castle is a weed dispensary lmao

This looks and sounds stunning. Hopefully the flower can be silenced so I can just enjoy the music.. Very pleasantly surprised, I was expecting them to just churn out another NSMB. I'm in day one.

Weird Mario is always the best Mario.

Also I am trying to place my finger on what the art style reminders me of. It’s obviously 2.5 but the models also have a flatness that make them feel like 2D images.

i mean Mario finds "wonder flowers" and when he gets one... like woah dude... strange things start happening to the world around him... yeah... im pretty sure the whole thing is about Mario and psychedelics, bowser is his dealer 80s saturday morning cartoon style trying to make it so hes too high to stop him taking over the world - not to mention him turning into an elephant

I want to take a minute to talk about the world map. We were given three glimpses at the world map. The first two shots seem to have Mario and Co. on a fixed line.

The third shot however shows a more open map where Mario can move more freely to a certain degree. I am definitely getting more 3D World vibes looking at this screen.

My initial thought was that the cloud world at the bottom is the overworld where we start the game at, and transport between sub-worlds. The top two shots are individual worlds where the levels are. I was hoping for more freedom in terms of movement on the world map so it looks like we will get some of that at least. I hope that this game keeps the tradition of 2D Mario games of having multiple shortcuts and exits in and out of levels/worlds.

Another thing. Looking at the first shot, Nintendo seems to be going away from numbering each level and instead going with names. Each level seems to have a set number of "wonder seeds". Looking at that last shot, I assume that wonder seeds are needed to unlock levels of some sort. Whether that means main levels or side stuff remains to be seen.

Spoiler alert, Bowser is the bad guy going by the second screenshot!

Even more notably - not just no level numbers, but I don't see any world names or world numbers. I wonder if the divisions between worlds aren't as clear cut and the game is a little more open ended, or if that's more hidden away for the sake of the trailer.

You know I just realized that with those talking flowers this new 2D Mario might somehow end up being one of the Nintendo titles with the greatest amount of voice acting

do we know how saving will work yet? i rage quit nsmbud after losing several stages of progress when me and my friend both died playing coop

Okay I promise that this will be the last thing I say about this game… tonight…

But it’s a huge deal that we’ve just gotten the reveal of the next mainline 2D Mario game. And just think, this game looks nuts in the first trailer and I’m sure they haven’t shown us hardly anything yet. 2D Mario is back, baby!

I'm guessing Elephant Mario is like Car Kirby. Great for marketing but a very tiny part of the game.

When i watched the Mario Movie i was depressed that we would return to the lifeless (in comparison) worlds of the Mario games. The film was brimming with terrific environments that made the games look so safe by comparison.
So you can imagine my shock that a 2D mario game, known for their lack of creativity, would be the one to hit that spot. I still cant believe it lol.

Just look at that, gorgeous. We need stuff like this on the next 3D Mario game.

Absolutely beautiful

If Daisy can get grandfather'd into mainline Mario there's no reason Wario can't either. Both debuted in the same subseries.

Speaking of being grandfather'd, it's WEIRD that Toadette is MIA, especially with how prominent she was in NSMBUDX and Maker 2.
Give me Wario, Waluigi and DK!

Honestly liking the art style a little bit more every time I look at it. Like it looks glossy and strange in a way that suits the cartoony weirdness it's going for.

I can’t put my finger on it, but something about SMB Wonder just feels off to me. I’m gonna need to see more. Cause right now I don’t know if I like what they showed.
I want it feel off. This 2D Mario is my taste, really got bored of the New style. I am loving the new art direction

For me it's the angle they're facing, it looks like they're in an isometric platformer looking/running down right, when they should be facing right.

This game is exactly what 2D Mario needed.
Mario's uber weirdness is what was so alluring to me and many others. Eating mushrooms, warping to new locations, getting lost in a Forest and odd enemies were once the "ooh, ahh" - but it has all become quite stagnant and normal for Mario to be that, right?
Well, this game brings back those classic Mario memories...everyone is saying Mario looks so WEIRD and STRANGE and "What? An elephant? The backgrounds are moving?! Mario is TALL? What's happening?!" - and I am just brought back to the days of discovering the weirdness that was Super Mario World. Bullets with faces? Football players? Whaaaat?! It just feels like it's going back to THAT tone and I cannot believe it! I am so in love with the two minutes they have shown off. I could go on and on, but I at least wanted to say that much.

I think the overall aesthetic really works for me as an evolution of NSMB's, the characters are so dang expressive now! This looks exactly like what 2D Mario needs. Daisy being playable is a very nice surprise that I would have never believed possible a few years ago, and I'm excited to see Yoshi being playable in 2D Mario; although I'm curious if he's both playable and a power-up, or if other players can ride him.

EDIT: Just saw Yoshi's face is in the life counter with Mario's in the scene where Mario rides him, so yeah, seems to be purely a playable character. Nice! Now give him egg-throwing in addition to flutter jumps and I can pretend I'm playing a new Yoshi's Island, haha.

Oh, didn't even notice they literally release on the same day.

Unfortunate for SM2 in the worldwide sales charts, I guess.

I've watched the trailer a dozen times, and every time that Mario misses collecting one of the purple coins, I twitch uncontrollably.

I like it

But I've also done a lot of drugs, so I can relate to what this game's vibe seems to be

I hope occasionally one just recycles a line from Star Fox 64.

Would you consume a real life elephant mario power up
I don't want to be an elephant, man.

You are my blood brother I hope u know that

I didn't even really notice this, but looks like Arlo posted a video with concerns that Martinet may not be voicing Mario here? I'm not sure which way I feel about it, I need to wait for confirmation. I'm mostly guessing because it's been like, years without fresh new lines so our ears are just not adjusted, but who knows?

it must be on purpose too bc iirc Kit and Krysta were saying that Nintendo are super fastidious about making sure the gameplay done in trailers is perfect, collecting all coins, perfect jumping angles etc... suspect it was to further show the upside down strange psychedelic panic nature of the wonder flower zone

We can see the mushroom kingdom in the background of the first level. I guess the flower kingdom is the neighboring kingdom of the mushroom kingdom.
I guess the story might be that Bowser is terrorizing Marios neighbors and the Mario gang is trying to help them. Maybe we will see the flower kingdom equivalent to Mario and Peach (we already saw a toad-looking NPC at the end of the level).

I think that's why the level difficulty is noted. Why include "difficulty" unless you can go "out of order" (or your OWN order)?

It feels so strange to have a 2D Mario game feel genuinely creative and weird again. My mind goes back to 1995 thinking about when EPD's last truly inventive 2D game was.

Graphically, and especially gameplay-wise, this makes me super happy, and I'm not even joking when I'm calling this a contender for GOTY to me. Genuinely new 2D Mario has been away for far too long. Just looking at the liveliness of it all... joy.

From an audio perspective, it seems like the smallest changes were made here. It's still early to tell, but the trailer's default sounding Roland Voices patch, MIDI guitar and super dry sparse instrumentation sounds like it's straight from NSMB. I don't know why they keep insisting on this style, sounds like I'm putting on my own music again playing Mario.

At least we got a new jumping sound! :p

If they extended the roster and went with the B tierest female character they could have chosen with Daisy, they screwed up.

Rosalina had better be playable, though I'm not a fan of making her a late game unlockable in 3d world either.
