Pre-Release Super Mario RPG remake — Pre-release Discussion Thread (UPDATE: developed by ArtePiazza)

Needless to say, I was so PUMPED.

I wanted to believe the hints of Pyoro so badly, even if it didn't seem like the stars were aligning. And now, it's here. Maybe the director's hopes for a sequel will be next?

Also!

While I love the facelift the game is getting, I'm REALLY hoping Culex's sprite remains the same as the SNES original. No HD2D touch-up, no pixel-remastering! I need that sucker to have that Morrigan from Darkstalkers effect here!

My one complaint is the title. I wish remakes didn't just have the same title as the old one. Makes it a bit more annoying to look stuff up about them.

You know what? I got like $100 on eShop credit and I was planning to save those to buy two tickets in case that Golden Sun remakes were announced but the Super Mario RPG remake gets very close to that so I might buy this both digitally and physically to tell Nintendo that we want a sequel in this style.

Dang. I remember being one of the only people to vote for this being likely to happen after Live A Live got revealed like a year ago!

Honestly wish it hadn't leaked, because now everyone acts like it always made obvious sense and isn't that big a deal.

Lol ok. 🙄

Really curious to see how they would approach a sequel. Hopefully the game does well enough to merit one. It's a good year for it to release at any rate.

Love this for us!

I feel like I had suggested it before more as a copium for why Mario RPG was MIA on NSO+EP. When the rumor happened I think it clicked for a lot of people that the copium was actually the reason.

You know, I thought I hated the stoutness of chibi artstyles, especially when they try to recreate sprites in 3D and have it be the same proportions. But I think this looks legitimately amazing graphically. Puts the Diamond and Pearl remakes to shame to be honest.

Please refrain from childish nicknames for developers. These poison discussion and lead to conversation derails. -xghost777, VolcanicDynamo, Josh5890

I mean, basically everything puts that (and every Greed Freak game) to shame. Just look at the upcoming Atelier Marie remake.

The art style works really well for me, not far off from what I imagined a remake would look like. The UI looks kind of bland, though. And those new Shimomura arrangements... THAT'S THE GOOD STUFF.

God, to see something I played so much of in my childhood back like this... it's got me feeling like a kid again.

I desperately want to know who is developing this

It does not look like a Square Enix game

Either Grezzo or EPD are my guesses

Hoo boy, just think if this outsells Super Paper Mario to become the best selling Mario RPG.

I've got no nostalgia for this game. Was anything in the trailer new, or did it look like the SNES original with new graphics?
There are some small changes to the combat system. That cyan-colored circular gauge wasn't a thing, unfortunately, the trailer doesn't give us an idea what it does (limit break? party attack?). There's also some chain combo thing on the left side of the screen. From what I can make out, when multiple party members correctly time their attacks in a row, the chain goes up and the party gets small boosts to their stats. Everything else looks faithful as far as I can tell.

---

Also, I agree with everyone who digs the looks of the game. My only visual-related complaint is that the battle HUD could use some more style than just flat dark boxes. Honestly, I'd vastly prefer a hypothetical Chrono Trigger remake to look like this instead of 2D-HD.

I noticed in the footage of battles that there is now a visual cue for timed hits (the characters get a "!" over their heads when you are supposed to press the button) that's fantastic and exactly what I said they needed to do last night in the Direct thread. I am so excited for this!

Once they have they engine, and the 3D models. It's probably going to be ridiculously easy to start pumping out sequels to this if it does well too. The actual RPG template was fantastic because it's really easy to reiterate upon it, and it's cost effective.

I mean the guy behind Super Mario RPG wants to do a sequel and seems to have a story idea...

so does this prove there is no "mandate"?
Not necessarily.

Remakes seem to be the games that get a lot more leeway. Like, sure, there were a couple of enemy NPC designs changed, but M&L: Bowser's Inside Story remake on 3DS largely was faithful to the DS original. And then the side mode with Junior added a few more OCs on top. In that respect, it seems like this Mario RPG remake slots right in with the idea that a remake can do the same thing.

It's if we ever see a true sequel/successor to this game that will perhaps be the real test of how much the "mandates" are still in play or not.

They also have text under the enemy attack name to tell you if it can't be blocked

You know, I didn't want to jinx this announcement but I really thought that this was going to be Nintendo putting the original on NSO, which still would have been fine but I am absolutely happier that they are taking the time and care to update this fantastic game.

Don’t think I could be happier about the way this is looking. Absolutely cannot wait to play this game (probably back to back) come November

This and Super Mario Wonder saved a rather dull Direct. The style here is not as inspired as in the original but is still very influenced by it.

Is great that a new audience can finally experience the Superior Mario RPG (Sorry TTYD, you don't stand a chance).
Literally nothing SMRPG did that wasn't done better in PM1 & M&LSS. From action commands having better context clues (enemies actually physically hitting you, what a novel concept) to feeling more like proper Mario adventures with platforming elements rather than a Square game they stuck Mario characters onto.

Nope! The characters and worldbuilding alone were better in SMRPG.
1. Stop calling them Greed Freak, you sound like and idiot.
2. Doubling down on your mistake also makes you sound like and idiot.
And going for personal insults prove how good you are at making arguments.

(And you don't even write well to make that kind of statement in the first place).

I disliked the Geno in Smash discord. Very annoying.

Now. I wouldn’t mind. Remake and back in the spotlight. Good enough for me to see discussion now 🤷🏽‍♀️

I think it looks pretty great, though I can't help but think after seeing the art style and animation of Wonder in the same Direct if they could've fine tuned this a bit more. But I'm happy to see a true Mario RPG brought back in some fashion, and hope it will lead to more games with this type of gameplay if this does well for Nintendo.

That's the best part

And I think that's the key element that will always have RPG in a class of its own, and I say that with Bowser's Insider Story being my favorite.

PM and M&L were more fixated on being basically more like Mario games that just happened to have a RPG-like interface. A thing that I would say is actually now a con in the long run, considering non-boss turn-based battles in modern PM are pretty useless, and M&L added on a whole lot of extraneous mechanics to try and keep the experience "fresh" (and work against a Mario-like experience, on the same token).

Besides, if the order of the day is going to be that "Mario should be thrust into new experiences that don't always involve the Mushroom Kingdom", then that actually is a good thing that RPG was already doing the kind of thing that the "mandates" would get tighter about as time went on.

I'd also argue that thrusting Mario and crew into more defined roles as party members is a welcome thing compared to the Partners in Paper being more akin to various "power-ups/items with personality", while Mario and Luigi can be so flexible in their roles, that there's less of a "party dynamic" between the two of them.
