I think times are different and Nintendo is focusing on one system. I think we see a period of cross gen. Not sure how long it would be. It could be very short.

The final 24 hours are here!

I doubt it will be a clean cut from this generation to the next for Nintendo. There will be a cross-gen period with some next gen exclusives in the meantime, and at least one cross-gen game will draw the wrath of the internet.

Which game will be showing gameplay first ?
  • Perfect Dark’’ reboot
  • Metroid Prime 4
  • Yes
As a former call-center employee, I swear the "Yes" meme originated from certain frustrating clients.

"Would you like your appointment to be for Thursday at 2:30, or Friday at 11, or Friday at 1:15?"
"Okay."

I highly doubt that there will be a fully new artstyle for 2D/3D Mario. It'll just be a nicer version of what we already have. Anything else would clash with the current brand image of Mario in the movies, on merch, and at the theme parks.

I highly doubt the Switch is going anywhere as long as it keeps selling about a gazillion units a week. I could see a new console somewhere down the line, but not without some kind of overlap

If the way people whine about PS5 games being cross-Gen is any indication, it's going to be annoying when the Switch 2 finally drops.

Always a shame when I check Famiboards.com on my break and learn that Nintendo has no more games for the rest of the Switch’s lifespan.
Yep, and when the Switch successor releases and its first (and only so far announced) major release comes out, we will learn that it's the only major game the console will ever have and all the other franchises are dead.

New 2D Mario? Guys, it’s finally happening…

The whole period is going to be embarrassing.

"Why are they wasting x game on Switch?!"

"Why isn't y coming to Switch? Plenty of demand for it!"

"Game shouldn't be on both systems."

No matter what Nintendo's approach to cross gen is, it'll draw ire. Even more so if they find one of those fun Nintendo Twists, like charging full price if you want to upgrade a Switch game to a next gen version (edit - which, to be clear, would be dumb).

Personally I'm not even sure if Nintendo will bother with too many cross gen games so much as they make it clear that any ongoing Switch titles are playable on new hardware. But they did dip their toes with some 3DS/Switch titles like Fire Emblem Warriors, Sushi Striker, and Captain Toad, and it'll presumably be easier to do Switch plus Switch 2 versions, so who knows?

Echoes deserves the kind of makeover Prime 1 got. It was a bleeding edge game on the Cube with stunning art direction to boot, especially for things like the Ing, the dimensional transition, and Sanctuary Fortress.

I'd much rather wait for it.
Imagine if they could pull off an instant dimension transition like ratchet and clank ript afart, would probably require a remake rather than a remaster but it'd be so cool. I wonder if it would be possible on Switch 2

If we get a brand new kind of 2D Mario, Metroid Prime 4 trailer and Paper Mario TTYD HD, this will be one of the greatest Nintendo Directs ever for me in this Gen.
A Paper Mario TTYD HD announcement would legitimately make me emotional ngl, it's one of my favorite games.

Agreed to all of this. I think there will be some leeway if there is a cross-gen Mario Baseball game in 2024, but if Nintendo announces a cross-gen Xenoblade game then fans will burn the internet to the ground.

I was thinking this. I keep thinking it in TotK when the shrine portal opens up: how cool would an instant transition feel?

Faster transitions between the two worlds should be possible, at least.

Even if Nintendo themselves cuts the Switch 1 off cold turkey, it'll likely continue to be supported by some 3rd party publishers for years the way the GBA, Wii, DS, and 3DS all were. Heck Nintendo themselves is no stranger to releasing games on old hardware after new hardware is out (Kirby's Adventure, Fire Emblem 5, etc) or having their games take advantage of new hardware for features (Oracle of Ages/Seasons on GBA, several gb games to gbc).

I thought this was a pretty interesting quote from Miyamoto (it's from Gameinformer). To equalize the movie and game art styles (to the extent it's possible) they will need to add way more detail.

Do you see any ways that the Mario movie could influence the games going forward?
SM:
When we were creating games back in the day, there were movies that we watched that might have influenced us. But now, we're in kind of uncharted territory for how Nintendo movies may impact and influence Nintendo games. But really, our approach with the integrated hardware and software is something I'm really looking forward to how that will change.

Here's hoping they add that to TotK in a next gen update

Oh for sure, based on the MPR elevator times alone that's a given imo

so like there’s a somewhat decent chance that this direct isn’t announced ahead of time right? Making sure I didn’t miss anything that said this was more likely to be a full general.

IT'S TIME FOR THE FINAL COUNTDOWN
Do do doo dooo...
My 80s Glamrock wig and outfit is ready.

I'm so happy I wasn't the only one directly hearing this in my head :')

Maybe I'm just weird but I kinda like that it isn't instant? I kinda assume that you're transported to some other-worldly space between worlds for those shrines, so it not being instant doesn't bother me? :'D (Though a bit faster loading would be neat)
