that would be a shocking movie. You would think they would at least go with dreamworks for this.
I think Nintendo may have been very happy working with Universal and Illumination. And obviously...1.3B dollars is one heckuva cherry on top lmao.

So discussingfilm(pretty big entertainment twitter) is reporting that Illumination is closing on a deal to make a Legend of Zelda movie. They are sourcing John Rocha.

“I come from the desert… forgotten, an outcast among my own people. I could either give up… let this world walk all over me… or shape the kingdom of Hyrule to my… own ideals… and now… I finally have the chance to do… just… that.“

(shadowy figure revealed to be Ganondorf, reaches hand out, camera pans over to his hand grabbing Zelda’s neck)

“And no one is going to save you, Princess!”

(screen goes black)

(extremely nasally voice)

“Wait a minute, the hero of time is…”

(cut to Link in his Pyjamas)

“ME??”

Dreamworks is also owned by Universal tbh. And i dont really think the Mario film's suCcess really speaks a lot about the potential of a zelda film. Illumination has never made a great film, while DW has several masterpieces, you'd think with that they would go for a studio that is more... equiped to handle a film that, obviously, would have a larger focus on narrative. Not to mention, i really really doubt a zelda film is capable of doing 1 billion. Maybe in the future but not now.

Dreamworks is also universal tbh. And like, i dont think mario speaks too much about a zelda film. It wont do 1 billion, and a good zelda film doesnt sounds like its within illumination's capabilities as a studio, which is why i would be super surprised if they went with them.
Sure. I think most of us would agree illumination seems like a weird pick for LoZ. I'm just given a simplistic POV for why Nintendo may pick them.

the CEO of Illumination is literally on the board of Nintendo, they’ve probably got ROFR on literally any film project

Why would a Zelda movie be outside of Illuminiation's capabilities? And didn't people say the same thing about Mario at first? People are studios are capable of changing and adapting to the vision a project.

I love the Mario film, its fun, its fast paced, its gorgeous, its a passion project. But its not great. As a film its barely better than the second best Illumination film, (despicable me), which is the studio's first film...So they didn't step up their game, they are still within their range and a Zelda film would demand much more than that. And yes illumination could change the way Sony Animation has changed for the better since the Peanuts film, but its unlikely, that amount of change is unrealistic, for any studio.

It would make much more sense if they went to a studio that has already made several amazing films.

Zelda movie can differentiate itself by appealing more strongly to the 10-12 year old demographic than the 8-10 year old one

Illumination absolutely has a “house style” which doesn’t align with Zelda‘s typical sensibilities (unless it’s straight up Wind Waker)

But here’s the thing: like you said, an animation studio is 100% capable of changing up styles, so while a lot of people will make jokes like I did above about a Zelda movie following the ”house style” of Illumination‘s previous works, the truth of the matter is that the only things to really take from their previous work is the knowledge that the movie is going to be absolutely stunningly rendered.

let's not mix things, i love the mario film, but as a film its not great. Im impressed at how they made the mario universe seem much... "3d" than it really is, but that is not the same thing as creating an actual great fantasy movie. And yes illumination coould change the way sony has changed for the better since the peanuts film, but its unlikely. The mario film is good, but its just slightly better than their second best film, the first despicable me, so they are just doing things that are within their range, when for a zelda film they'd need to step up their game and for ANY studio its difficult to imagine that happening.

The Mario did well at the box office and well received by fans. That's good enough for Nintendo. The reason why Nintendo went with Illumination in the first place is because they had experience making high production animation and making big box office sellers. And it's kind of weird to suggest that Illumination is incapable of bringing the Zelda franchise to the movies while also suggesting that...Dreamworks of all studios would be better. It's not like every movie they make is a critical darling. Far from it.

If all Nintendo is concerned is with the box office, they may drop any hopes of the zelda film ever hitting 1 billion. Zelda isnt Mario, it already has very slim chances of crossing 1 billion, imagine being a mediocre film lol.

And its not weird at all. Yes, DW is certainly not impervious to bad films, but they also have done something that illumination never has done: Masterpices. From Prince of Egypt, passing to Shrek 1, Shrek 2, Kung Fu Panda 1 and 2, to the HTTYD Trilogy, Megamind, and now Puss In Boots 2.

and im considering only the films that arent just comedies, because madagascar 2 is damn great.

If the upcoming 2D Mario game looks anything like the newly announced Sonic Superstars then i will be very happy.

Nintendo's fierce overprotectiveness of their I.P. would ensure that a Zelda movie establishes a more serious tone relative to the Mario movie. Not that they'd have Alden Ehrenreich doing Link as a silent protagonist per se, but the same forces that violently oppress anything that would cause Mario to deviate from being A Family-Friendly Romp For All Ages will want to maintain Zelda's brand identity, which caters more to middle schoolers than to elementary schoolers

Honest to god I don't understand how some of y'all are so confident about a 2D Mario this year. What evidence is there for it at all?

The new one has been in development for quite a while (who would have guessed), also 4 months after Maker 2 launched Nintendo put out a hiring for a level designer for 2D action game in Kyoto

But I suspect that the game has been at least in concept phase even before the Maker 2 released.

A lot of people who worked on Octo Expansion have not been credited on Splatoon 3, or anything else.

Yusuke Amano – NSMB2 – Director.
Shigeyuki Asuke – NSMB Wii Director, NSMU Game Design
Terumasa Kato
Toshikazu Jin
Keisuke Nishimori
Yoko Tanaka
Keisuke Umeda
Hiroyuki Morishima
Yutaka Hiramuki

And bunch of other names. Altough some of them will be part of Pikmin 4 dev team. We will see in July.

Mario Maker 2 released in June 2019, Octo Expansion in June 2018. That means that some concepts/prototyping of this game has to be happening from 2018.

As to when this game gonna be announced, it can be as soon as 2 weeks from now. For a late October/November release. Most 2D Mario games had a fairly small reveal-to-release cycle:

New. Super Mario Bros. Wii announcement at E3 2009 - November 2009 release.

New Super Mario Bros. 2 announcement in April 2012 - July 2012 release.

New. Super Mario Bros. U announcement at E3 2012 - November 2012 release (altough this one is tied to hardware launch/reveal). "The prototype NSMB Mii. was shown at E3 2011".

Super Mario Maker 2 announcement in February 2019 - June 2019 release.

Every New Super Mario Bros. game apart from like DS and original Mario Maker had a 5-6 months from reveal to release, or even less. It's not gonna be another NSMB game but you get the point. If Nintendo wants to sell 15 mil. Units this FY, new 2D Mario game is exactly way to go, especially after Mario Movie.

fae farm 59.99 on switch/pc...................................blinks they have gotta be kidding me dead on arrival.
yeah it depends on the depth of the game. There are so many farming/life sims out there with a lot of depth that cost less and look better. The bar is high for the genre that has become so saturated.

First, the Stinky Horse is announced, the doomposting starts. Then Pikmin "trailer" is shown, the doomposting continues, then Grubb says some rumblings about July. They are doubting Team June at this very moment, they think we are dead. But I am still brave. Today, the Necro himself mentions in a tweet something about a Direct this month, he literally in this thread says that: "Direct incoming bros, What's the term that Nate likes to use? "Sooner than later?" and barely few people talk about this. You don't want to see the truth, you don't want to see the Direct. Team June scoring after they thought we were dead.

The funniest thing is that I was chatting with Grubb a few days ago and we thought it would be funny if he mentions something about July, to really is who is devoted to us, to people who got onto this train without a single leak. (this is joke)

Mario Maker is your new 2D Mario god

I'm half expecting Mario Maker 3 as the new 2D game
Nintendo knows they can't market Mario Maker as a game for mass market. It will never be as successful as standalone 2D Mario. Maker series will likely stay it's own thing as of now. The Director of 1&2 also left the company right after 2 was released. I would say no new Maker for a while, maybe in 2027. The timeline also does not really match up, they started working on this game before Maker 2 launched, so the idea of it being another Maker game is practically non-existent at this point.

Hey everybody I've been out of the spec game for pretty much this whole thread, first cycle I haven't participated in in years....

anybody mind catching me up? preferably with reliable evidence but honestly I wanna hear all the crazy stuff I've missed

Yeah I was surprised that very few people are talking about Necro's tweets. It got only a few responses in this thread. I'm not expecting people to take it as 100% confirmation, but it's worth considering.

Probably because it's still rather vague and whenever one of these guys says they heard something is coming, it could be any kind of direct. Whether it be general, mini, partner mini, etc.

It's dead on arrival but not because of the price. It'll get squashed between Story of Seasons and Fantasy Life. And then there's Rune Factory 3 that's coming on same month as Fae Farm.

To add to this, Super Mario Maker 2 sold under 8 million, while NSMBUDX, a Wii U port, sold nearly twice that amount despite only being out 5 and a half months earlier. I think this may be at least partly because most of the game’s features were advertised as requiring Nintendo Switch Online, which comes at an additional cost.*

*somewhat unrelated but I got Mario Maker 2 on launch day and the electronic’s guy at Walmart gave me the Switch Online bundle but, not knowing the difference, only charged me for the regular edition so I got a year of Switch Online for free

FL needs a release date first, there's also my time at sandrock in september.

Well that was a decent Partner Showcase we just had. That will totally tide us over for Nintendo news for a month or so

(runs)

Yes, If.

Seriously dude why are you like this. We have as little information to go off of as I can imagine, we can't make wild assumptions like "there will definitely for sure be a June 2023 Direct" and "There will definitely for sure be a new 2D Mario game in the holiday season".
okay

Honestly after that summer games fest I could do with a good direct. Craving consision, brevity and focus. Might convert to team June.
