Pre-Release The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Pre-Release Discussion Thread

The previews have undoubtedly made me even more excited than I thought possible, but I actually think what I've read makes me think that the game scoring as high as BOTW is an impossible task.

The increased freedom, while a design improvement for many, might alienate some reviews for being intimidating in its sheer number of options, the game seems harder from both overworld traversal and combat perspectives (which is exciting to me), and again, more common comments about aging hardware now than in 2017. The barrier to entry feels a little higher this time around, so I still think the ceiling for this is 95, and if TotK actually hits or exceeds that, it will overall be considered a superior Zelda game to BOTW by fans and possibly a top two title in the franchise.
Let alone 7/10 runs better on emulator😢 (/s)

If you are planning to buy digital, definitely check this thread. Might be useful.

I don’t know why I’m so strangely bothered by it, but I have this lingering worry, and I really don’t want the great sky island to be one of the biggest island clusters. I get that the game wants to start out strong, but it would be a bummer to me if the game peaked early. What made BotW so cool is that it had this great opening area, but one that became completely dwarfed by the rest of the game.
I wouldn't be worried, TOTK peaking early is something I'm absolutely confident won't happen. There's going to be so much cool stuff and interesting places that we haven't even seen a whiff of yet, and it's going to be amazing; the dev team allowing anything at all to be shown has been like pulling teeth (or so it appears) so I can't wait to really dig into what's behind the curtain.

I'm seeing all these videos and maps of known locations and breakdown of what changed and it's a fair amount of content, yet its probably basically nothing compared to what the team is hiding on release. The game will likely be huge.

Pretty sure Kotaku won't be getting any review codes. They weren't even invited to the preview events. ;D

My only remaining concerns are:
  1. Map of Hyrule will feel too similar (this is dissipating the more footage we see, not too worried)
  2. Glyphs are memories (extremely worried about this, will make the game much less interesting imo)
  3. Dungeons are linked to each tribe, i.e 4 dungeons again (dungeons looked themed, which is good, but I was hoping for more than just 4)
Looking forward to leaks 👁️

I'm thinking we'll get "town building" segments that use ultrahand to let us actually design and place houses in contained areas around hyrule field similar to the modular-af tarry town homes. That, paired with what we've already seen in the trailer of more active NPCs has me excited. It'd be a super fun side quest to put our own stamp on hyrule!

If so, your move, AC team (sry in advance to the non-building/design AC fans)

honestly I was convinced the glider was going to be a final reward for beating the game (just like the bike in BotW). Like "now that you've explored all of the new Hyrule, you can fly anywhere!" Granted, the glider isn't as powerful as I originally thought. It has no self propulsion aside from you sticking fans and rockets to it. Like I'm sure if you push it off the side of an island it will glide and all, but it's just not what I had in mind. And I'm OK with that.

Nintendo, I am once asking where the new artwork for Zelda is! Everyone else got two pieces. Where's hers? What does it show? Does it show her with the rebuilt Master Sword? Is she wearing Majora's Mask? Is she clutching Yunobo's severed head? What are you hiding Nintendo?!

Yeah, it seemed special, like it was your stone loftwing or something, but then I saw a preview where someone stuck an eagle to another eagle and I was like, "oh, it's just a vessel for attachments"

she's not playable, so she doesn't matter

Yeah it's basically just there to be an aerodynamic thing to attach parts to. Which makes sense as a thing to have

Definitely glad it's not something special, it didn't feel that interesting to me as an ability or some such thing but it's pretty neat as a construction part

Sorry if this has been asked but do we know yet if the game will launch with the option for Japanese VA? I assume it will be just curious.

I don't know if i should play BotW these two weeks...
I wasn’t going to either, but I booted it back up once I learned some of the basic buttons and controls were the same. I’m glad I did hadn’t played in awhile and it’s been fun just messing around with no objective in mind. That way I can just focus on using all the new abilities.

I've been playing the game casually for a little while and managed to put 45 more hours into it. It's been fun revisiting the world at my leisure and comparing it to what I see on the trailers, previews, etc. It's going to make it easier to figure out what changed and what didn't. All that is left for me to revisit at this point are the minigames.

We already passed the time when BOTW DLC was announced (17 days). We are now 14 days before launch, when you exclude this weekend (when nothing would be announced) that's 12 days before launch. DLC is not gonna be announced before launch at this point.

And hey, there is always a chance there is not DLC at all. I know this might sound funny to some but look at Odyssey. But I think there will be.

I suspect Mario Odyssey was an anomaly and will be explained upon the reveal of the next 3D Mario. given that Koizumi still has his hands in that, as well as hardware now, he could have turned any DLC plan into a sequel plan for a Drake headliner

Am not really sure if Koizumi is Producer on next hardware. I mean, he could be but am not that certain. He is Senior Executive Officer now, also a Director of Nintendo Pictures. It's pretty common for Nintendo to bring different people in next hardware for new ideas. Kawamoto (EPD4) will probably be the Producer (he was Director) since EPD4 games are literally tied to hardware features.

I can see Nintendo making the DLC for this game more substantial than what they did for BOTW. More along the lines of the Xenoblade or Splatoon story expansions. Assuming that the next 3D Zelda is years and years away, I think an expansion for Tears of the Kingdom would help tie people over.

Yes I have booted up sometimes in the last years but maybe I will go here and there these days to have a better memory of old Hyrule

Can't get enough of watching people clearing the monster camp and sky island from the previews. It's insane that everyone uses a different method.

Truncated version of the final trailer with one or two quick new shots.

Damn, I need to go somewhere before they start showing more, more japanese ads will also provide another footage.

I love new footage like this

Like 1 second on new stuff once a day

Not too much spoiler but something to think about

For example the Master Sword shot

So I'm guessing the shot of Link grabbing the Master Sword is a flashback. He's wearing his updated champions tunic so it takes place after BOTW. I assume he returns the Master Sword after BOTW and then grabs it again before heading down into the depths with Zelda.

Oooohh that's a neat theory that i like, even though it has holes, lol.

I mean what other possibilities could it be?

1. It's a flashback showing the events leading up to when his arm got messed up underground.
2. His arm returns to normal sometime later in the game and at some point, he retrieves the Master Sword again from the Deku Tree
3. It's a flashback to when he got the sword 100 years ago and him having the updated champions tunic is just a continuity error

I think there’ll be theme of “energy sources”. Namely the clean, green, natural, spirit/sun based energy of the Zonai and the earth based, mining, resource using fuel of Ganon’s forces. Rechargeable vs pollution. tar/gas spills in Zora’s domain, earth contamination in Goron’s food source. Not sure what’s causing the tornado in the Rito’s area, but mining could also be causing sink holes in the desert.

Also if we want to be huge Zelda lore nerds about it, in previous games, Link always returns the Master Sword to its pedestal (unless it's stuck in someone's head) so it seems logical that after BOTW, he does the same and then has to grab it again because they think there is some terrible evil underground.

Altough not many people discuss this and it's still not clear after previews. I am pretty sure that this game has HD rumble. I can't think of any first-party release that did not used it. You can argue that it's "gimmick" feature for you, but when implemented well it's a good feature, even when sometimes it's only "that's neat", it can better throw you into the game.
Even just ports made by Nintendo use it, even recent releases like Prime Remaster use it. Even Skyward Sword HD uses it really well (you can argue that this one is made by Tantalus, which is true. But it still has EPD3 employees as a supervisors for this port).

TLDR: There is HD Rumble in this game, I really doubt they did not implemented it.

I'd say #3 and the tunic discrepancy is purposely there so they don't confuse anyone who didn't play BotW. My guess at least.

There’s no reason why link would keep the master sword after BotW. It’s not his sword. It has a very specific purpose, so it makes perfect sense for him to put it away when the job was done. Having a small “montage” of sorts at the beginning of the game showing him picking the sword back up for this new adventure makes sense.

Yeah I think Nintendo has learned a lot about how to do DLC right since Botw. Not to knock on what Botw offered, which was solid in its own right.

inb4 botw DLC gets DLC joke

Yes, it has to be. It is curious that Link would return the sword and then go out of his way to pick it back up again, presumably just before he and Zelda head underground. That implies that they felt they'd need the sword—that they had a suspicion of what they'd find or at least felt they needed to act with caution. I wonder if there was a prior disturbance (or disturbances, plural) in Hyrule that prompted their investigation? That'd fit a bit better with Nintendo's description of the story as "unravel[ing] the truth behind this cataclysmic event," which I thought was odd given... well, we know exactly what happened? Ganondorf is back? Link and Zelda saw it with their own eyes? I'm sure they have a limited understanding of who or what they found, but the inciting event itself seemed obvious.

I mean the change in the tunic design is something that only people who played BOTW would notice. I don't think any new player is going to be confused to why he has straps and armor over his tunic in the main game but not in this particular cutscene. They honestly probably wouldn't even notice.
