Pre-Release The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Pre-Release Discussion Thread

I’ve been wondering if this shot with Link with Guardian legs, represents link receiving the spool of wire as a tool he can use throughout the game. I then thought that since this Sheikah transport is made up of dilapidated wood surrounding it, that Link attaches the end of the wire onto his belt or Arm because the spool clearly has a hook on it, and then is able to use it to lower himself down more precisely rather than gliding with the para-glider for caves etc.

full-grap-hook-combined.jpg

Given the possible emphasis on tools and combining objects to make weapons, there are over-world uses as well. It reminds me of this cable we saw in the 2022 trailer. So Link could attached the cable spool to a tree or rock, then glide to the next island and connect the wire. More easily, he could simply attach it to an arrow and with a spiked tip that would embed itself into rock, then either rail grind it across or use it as a zipline.

Wire-on-island.jpg

Also since all of islands are tapered towards the bottom and have some sort of break from the smooth surface of the sides of the islands, to the more rugged and jagged rocks beneath them, he won’t be able to climb up from the bottom or climb down from the top. We may not be able to climb on the sides of the islands at all, but even if we could we would still fall off at the transition point or lip and have to attempt to glide to underneath and grab on. But given the angle, it will be extremely difficult to achieve without missing the bottom of the island and gliding past it.

bottom-island-hook-complete.jpg

So I think we use the spool of wire in this instance again to first attach it to a tree or a rock and lower ourselves down the sides of the islands to reach objects or things beneath the surface of the islands. The one shot with the square rock and red light on it may be something we have to activate, or release the wire it’s attached to, to drop the rock to surface or at least land on it with more precision. We could also use the spool to attach to the bottom of some of islands, since it looks like they have attachments, to free up our hands to use the bow so we are suspended in mid-air, to fight enemies in one area, or shoot targets in the sky for puzzles.

Please share more of your thoughts in this thread. This idea is really amazing and it's crazy enough for the Zelda team to put it in 😁

We all complained about fishing in BotW, correct? I know there are creative ways to do it (bombs, arrows, literally catching them with your hands) but none of them are as engrossing as OoT fishing. I need a good fishing game minigame in TotK dammit
I want this as well. Ideally it should be like TP where you can fish anywhere, but we also need a proper fishing pond area, with its own chill music. There's plenty of ponds in BOTWs Hyrule they can repurpose too.
This is the type of thing I would just love to be post-game. You finish the game and you personally get to contribute to the rebuilding of a now peaceful Hyrule and can just relax and do things like play games with NPCs, do some farming & fishing, etc. If there’s one thing Zelda has never done, it’s having some meaningful post-game stuff to do, or anything at all for that matter. I hope TotK changes that.
Right. Fishing with a rod is about the experience, it's about taking your time. It's really nice to just take a moment and enjoy the environment that way.
OK, If we can't wish or will this to happen into existence then we are going to have to take matters into our own hands! I say we have already seen the fishing rod in the trailers already.
Fishing-pole-complete.jpg

Multi-purpose pole to use as a rod, CHECK! Spool of wire, complete with hook, CHECK and CHECK! Combine with Green, goopy goo, scratch that, I mean add some Hinox Earwax @Irene , CHECK! We already know where to find plenty of Crickets so that's a CHECK for the bait.
Also, I am already way ahead of you four, picked out my spot already. Just in case any of you get any ideas of moving in on my spot, I'm chilling right here till May 12th. :)

Very interesting reddit post that suggests the "waterfalls" we've been seeing from the sky islands are in fact coils of malice, as seen from the first teaser trailer...

I figured it was waterfalls, but that undulating shape of the malice is oddly similar. If this is the case, I wonder if it's related to the spiral shrine things we see on the surface. Do we go underground to do something to activate them to start sending malice skyward? Since the thing over ganondorf is basically the same spiral pattern, maybe that's the bottom of one of those shrines.

I never quite liked how all the Youtube theorists just tossed this aspect aside as waterfalls and moved on with their analysis. They very well could be still, but they always looked like they were too perfectly straight and had a more solid definition to them than waterfalls. Plus I imagined that the Falls would naturally dissipate into the atmosphere, perhaps causing a thunderstorm or rain clouds beneath them.

i‘m surprised Zeltik didn’t add this to his theory of the Spirals some how being connected to raising and lowering the sky islands because it seems like it would correlate with his theory as well.

There’s concern of it being the same map- 14 GB + only 4 GB of new in TOTK.

Reading back a page or 2 seeing some discussion about people attempting to judge the quality of a game by its filesize, you can have a field day by comparing Mario Odyssey to just the save file size of NBA 2K18.
They're both around 5GB

Never ever judge a game by its size, it tells us absolutely zero without knowing the level of compression, optimization or which focus of the game is asset heavy (music quality, are there non pre-rendered cutscenes, picture size, the way textures are handled, left over data, libraries etc.)

I just looked up how long the soundtrack for Breath of the Wild was and it is 6 hours long,
Now... Let's assume that a song of about 3 minutes at 128kbps would be 3MB, whereas in uncompressed state the same song would be 30MB. Compressed the entire soundtrack of BotW could lie anywhere between 360MB and 3,6GB. Edit: I just looked it up, it's 1,56GB.

The biggest type of data in BotW? Character models coming at 3.51GB followed by textures at 1.81GB followed by the sounds/music of 1,56GB, the 4th place goes to cutscenes at 1GB and then 5th the physics engine coming at 955MB and a finally the GUI at 6th of 620MB.
(Thanks musical_bear from Reddit who looked it up in the Extracted Wii U version) the DLC would come at 2.5GB extra data.

Tears of the Kingdom comes at 18.2 GB vs. BotW's 13.5 GB

Just to humor it let's try it out:
Totk Character models x2: 7,02GB
Removed and new textures x2: 3GB
Music is replaced and new are added: 2GB
Cutscenes replaced and x2 added: 2GB
Physics engine x2: 2GB

Basically we have a game that is 2x as large as BotW going by file size alone, I reached 16GB so far with no DLC...

Skipped through the video but didn't really find anything with substance beyond the streamer sharing his concerns so I quote my earlier message where the land could have another BotW size map added if just going by filesize.

Besides that, I never expected a 'new' map so it wouldn't come as a surprise to me. I believe the new game will have so much more added content that the old map will simply feel new again now that we have 2 new layers. The dynamics will have changed dramatically so the familiar feeling of the map might actually be something that the team wants the player to experience to see it completely changed now, that's kind of a unique experience I think.

It excites me and makes me want to replay BotW again even!

This makes perfect sense. In Breath of the wild they added climbing and here abseiling

Spool talk is interesting, I hadn't even thought about that object before and hadn't noticed the hook.
I still suspect that the paraglider is a later game and maybe optional object and there will be other ways of landing, like normally you might have to dive headfirst into water to land a long fall?

Is this making the assumption that somehow the exact same cutscenes, audio, Sheikah Shrine / Divine Beast maps and assets, and every single character model from BotW - all of which took up storage - will reappear in TotK? I don't want to give this a view.

This will not literally be the BotW game + 4GB of new content.

The latest mind-bend I've seen is that in the car shot, someone noticed that when Link is driving it, the vials are empty.

That's one for the huge vial theory pile, them maybe being some sort of power source for the vehicles.

I think they will have several uses. Powering up the arm and also the vehicles. I imagine running out of power in the arm, grab a vial and then just pump magic power back into it will feel very satisfying.

I was assuming the large green tank sitting in the middle of the car was acting like a big battery of green goo for powering it, so that you don't need any from your vials.

Seems a lot of people just want to be pessimistic for some reason.

EPD3 rarely disappoints, trust the process.
People are just nervous for a variety of reasons because it's a bit of a weirdly positioned release. If this had come out three years ago most would have been much more forgiving of what they've shown so far. To the ones that are most critical about TotK this just looks like a Galaxy 2 style sequel that took twice as long to come out. It is what it is.

Random question, but when Link & Zelda go on their quest in the underground that results in the awakening of Ganondorf, where do we think they enter?

Based on the animal they travel on, it’s very clear that this is a long journey. The only other possible hint is we hear at the end of BOTW that Vah Ruta is no longer working and that they should investigate, but why would the entrance to the underground be in the Zora’s area?

The entrance being in the Gerudo area would theoretically be another option given Ganondorf’s background, but everything we’ve seen of the underground suggests a Zonai linkage and that would imply it being somewhere in the Faron region. Is there a spot there that would make sense? I can’t recall if there was anything near the Spring of Courage or Floria Falls that could be a potential entrance that was there all along.

What are the current theories for dungeons and their locations? Does anyone think we’ve seen any real dungeons anywhere?
I mean one has to be at Death Mountain with all its malice spewing out. At least that's what I think, unless dungeons are going to exclusively be in the sky or something, and this is only assuming dungeons make a full return.

Nervous is understandable, not that I agree with it. But some people seem to be actively looking for possible ways to be disappointed.

I think the implication from the trailers is that the chamber holding Ganondorf is directly below Hyrule Castle, but I guess it's true there's nothing conclusive saying that. And even so we don't know where the entrance to the cave system is of course.

This game would’ve released years ago if it wasn’t for Covid so I agree with @Dardan Sandiego. A game looking like this releasing in say 2021 would’ve been fine for a lot more people (I’m only talking about based on the footage we’ve seen so far).

People will say “6 years of development, 6 years of development for a world which looks the same except some snow melted here or some blocks are littered here or there”.

What are the current theories for dungeons and their locations? Does anyone think we’ve seen any real dungeons anywhere?
I think the underground is mostly likely similar to the original Zelda. And if malice erupting through the surface from multiple locations is any indication, the extent of the underground is much bigger than most are anticipating. I think Death Mountain seems like an obvious spot for a dungeon, but it’s really hard to speculate where else as there could entrances pretty much anywhere.

One question I don't think a lot of the theorists went into is, where did the Deku tree go? Going back to the Official Trailer #1 and pausing at the 1:02 minute mark, it's just gone, nothing behind the castle. Did it die like in OoT? Or did it go upward? Or did they just not want us to see that info yet?

anyone who uses file size as a measure of content is a fucking idiot. no, I will not apologize for the language

FUCKING IDIOT
This game is so beloved by millions upon millions. I think there’s a lot of emotions mixed into it so you’ll probably hear more about this file size being brought up, even though like you said doesn’t make sense.

Nervous is understandable, not that I agree with it. But some people seem to be actively looking for possible ways to be disappointed.
I guess it's a matter of attitude and perspective. I loved BotW, trust in EPD3's track record and feel that I've seen enough new additions to alleviate some of my fears so I look at every small detail as something potentially exciting. I also don't really mind the 6 years of dev time or that they're largely reusing the same world from BotW as long as the game can surprise me in new ways. You probably feel the same.

But if someone is already not enamoured with the premise of this game and looking for that "one thing" to win them over... I can see how they'd come away feeling disappointed. I also doesn't help that every frame is analyzed and scrutinized these days and so far it's looking really familiar. The footage Nintendo has shown works really nicely if you're already sold on the game but I don't think it's great at addressing the most common complaints of people that weren't so hot on BotW or were just looking for something radically different from its sequel.

Yeah, I fully agree that the trailers suggest Ganondorf is under Hyrule Castle, but I have to imagine that the entrance is quite a distance from there based on the elephant thing they took to get there. And I think it raises the question of why the entrance is in one spot and why was Ganondorf being held under Hyrule Castle itself. Seems like a bad spot to hold him unless you got some beef with the Royal Family.

Wasn't the Calamity Ganon area underneath Hyrule Castle a Sheikah laboratory? I think like the Well in Ocarina, there's a lot of dark Hyrule history buried underground for us to find.

I trust those guys more than any other videogame developer in the industry. To me it woldn't be necessary to see anything about the game and I would deliver 70 euros.

So Link is just bringing his meth van in the middle of the desert so he can "cook" in peace ?

Yep, and its walls show... the skyline and stars of Hyrule =O.

Could Nintendo reveal something on March 3 for BotW anniversary ? I don't think that we'll see a new proper trailer but what about an announcement for the OLED ?
Nintendo doesn't care about anniversaries nearly as much as fans think they do.

If Malice is able to reach the sky island and corrupt them... damn Ganondorf's not messing around

The NPC we saw in central hyrule in the last trailer is Blynne from Highland Stable:
li2tb1cbb9p41.jpg

Im glad Stables are confirmed for ToTK. (We can see one during the thunder storm in the last trailer.)

Forgot about PAX, watching some gameplay in a month seems great, but they might just advertise that game at PAX and wait a little bit for treehouse etc... since Bayonetta is March 17.
I don't think they would debut the gameplay at PAX and their own would be at later date. If they care about Bayo they can still do it few days after it releases since the PAX is from March 23-26th.

This would be my ideal Treehouse, with these guys. Even Aonuma and Fujibayashi would be enough. I don't want NOA employes, I want people who made the game and since they are no longer doing live Treehouses (outside of E3) it could be dubbed/subbed already and just "streamed" like online video.
