Assuming we get a general, would it be safe to say that Tears of the Kingdom is guaranteed to be the closer?

Because as far as I can remember, if a major Zelda announcement is present, it's the closer of the Direct. Somebody correct me if I am wrong.

The fact that Spawn Wave hints at the week of February 8/9 makes me feel that’s gonna be the week. He’s often right with his “If I gotta guess, I’d say…”. It’s probably based on Nate or other insiders but he was often right with these hints.
This is only tangentially related but I kind of stopped taking his word for things when he said "Nintendo doesn't make Metroid games often because the series sells badly" which is just an outright falsehood.

Something about people spreading misinformation about Metroid sales really gets my goat for some reason. It's probably my most specific and pedantic pet peeve.

Lol I mean I have to be wrong, right?

The more I think about it, I feel like maybe the first time they announced Breath of the Wild (with the backdrop behind Aunoma leading into the guardian chasing link) might have been in the middle of the Direct?

The half-time show is going to include the Direct. It's when we'll finally hear Rihanna's song for Pikmin 4, but the big surprise will be an original song from the Mario movie (it's called Coin Block and is performed by Charli XCX feat. Pabllo Vittar, Kacey Musgraves, Jay Park, Philip Glass and Saweetie).
I want this so badly now it hurts.

Count me in for Arca being the composer of Metroid Prime 4 OST and sound effects.

That's true of the three times TotK has been in a Direct, but that's it. BotW never closed anything, not even when it was announced at E3 2014 (and it was the only thing in the E3 2016 Direct, so that doesn't count). I don't think there have been any other major Zelda appearances in the Direct era, and what Zelda announcements we did have weren't closers.

As for whether TotK will close the next Direct... maybe? I'm 50/50 on it. They could announce a TotK Direct, so the trailer in this one will be significant but still short, and not a closer. Or they could make it a really in-depth trailer, in which case it would probably be in the middle of the presentation, since closers are usually more punchy than meaty.

Technically not a Direct, but arguably with even more impact, BOTW closed the January 2017 Switch reveal event with that epic trailer and release date

I think TotK might be the second-to-last thing. A lengthy segment, with a trailer and some new game mechanics explained by Aonuma, and then "we hope you enjoy TotK in May, but there's one more thing"... boom, Metroid Prime 4.

Ah okay so my second post was correct, initial BoTW reveal was not the closer. I think Links Awakening and Skyward Sword HD might also have been closers, but my memory is foggy on the latter.

Very good point about the in-depth trailer. I think if a ToTK direct was announced, it would probably be attached to the closer. But I don't personally see that happening. So maybe an in-depth peak of TotK in the middle, or either a story trailer closer followed immediately by Treehouse gameplay?

But imagine if ToTK was the opener? I would immediately think the rest of the show was gonna be killer if they did that.

Another Direct that ends with Zelda is not the most exciting thing in the world.

If I were the Chief Editing Officer of Nintendo Directs, I’d stick it as the very first thing and then end on a Metroid Prime 1 HD & Prime 4 double whammy. Throw in GB family on NSO as a middle announcement and we’re golden. Changing up the announcement schedule is never a bad thing for this type of thing, and we’ve seen this with Smash announcements going more towards the front of a Direct iirc rather than the ending announcement

I also typed something very similar in the Sept 22 Direct lead up so maybe I’ll be wrong again

If Tokyo RPG Factory is still alive, they should be having a game for release sooner rather than later. If so, a Direct announcement wouldnt be out of the question.

I don't have all the info in front of me, but from quickly searching, it doesn't look like Treehouse Live has ever followed a February Direct. Actually, has it ever followed any Direct besides E3? They've done separate streams in other months, but I don't know if they ever followed Feb/Mar/Sep generals.

It would be a good fit for showing off TotK in-depth while keeping the Direct appearance concise though, I agree.

The Direct Moon rises once again!

OMG I love this time of year!
Tomorrow will be interesting!

Thread idea:

Will the Tears of the Kingdom 2023 Blowout trailer surpass the Breath of the Wild Nintendo Switch Presentation 2017 trailer?

[ _ ] No way
[ _ ] Yes way

reading this made you want to rewatch the trailer don't lie

Right. As you said, I don't believe treehouse has followed a February Direct, but they have definitely appeared in times outside of E3.

I don't think it's impossible.

For me, TotK being the big closer would still be great as long as it's a big blowout trailer that finally shows off the game in full. Another small teaser would be pretty disappointing, though, and I don't really think they can get away with that again given the game is so close.

But something more surprising would be cool, too. If Zelda is in the middle of the Direct, that opens the door for "well then what will be the big finish?" which is always nice

Zelda has actually been used as a closer multiple times:

  • January 2017 Switch Presentation (BotW)
  • February 2019 Direct (Link's Awakening)
  • E3 2019 (the Sequel to Breath of the Wild)
  • February 2021 (Skyward Sword HD) **actually Splatoon 3 woops
  • E3 2021 (SS:HD, Zelda Game & Watch, the Sequel to Breath of the Wild)
  • September 2022 (Tears of the Kingdom)

Seems pretty clear Nintendo have a preference to use the series as a grand finale, if there's something to show from Zelda.

February 2021 was actually Splatoon 3. But yeah, it will probably be a closer.

Wasn't Splatoon 3 the closer of February 2021 Direct?

SSHD wasn't the closer in February 2021, Splatoon 3 was. I did forget about LA in 2019, though.

Nintendo's recent examples of openers pretty much rules out TotK as a opener. (Not that it would be opener, I think that's impossible imo). It's either closer or before the closer game.

I think at this point if Zelda isn't in the big Direct with just around 3 months left before the game is suppose to ship then I'm going to start thinking either something is wrong with the game, a delay is imminent or out of left field Switch 2 and 4K Tears of the Kingdom is a real thing. It's been incredibly weird to basically not even acknowledge this game anymore with just over 3 months left before release. It's getting silly now.

It will likely be the main show piece of the next Direct next week. ;)

The closing game will be whatever they have for the end of the year, I believe.
Zelda will probably have something comparatively meaty in the middle, and the promise of longer dedicated direct. The opening game will be third party.

Before the closer isn't usually an in-depth look at something, I feel? IMO the middle of the Direct is the most likely place, unless there isn't another big title to close with, in which case TotK will be the closer.

I agree. It was just a crazy "what if" scenario.

Based off the usual Direct format, I'm guessing the opener will be 2D Mario.

Entirely possible Nintendo close with an announcement for the big year-end title, with Zelda getting a detailed showing just before that. Followed by whoever is hosting doing the 'thanks for watching, lol one last thing losers'.

as if happening on the same day as last year wasn't enough, it'll also open with 2D Mario and close with Zelda

But they aren't going to do any in-depth look at TotK. Full 3 minute trailer and that's it, maybe then Aonuma talking about 1 minute and 46 seconds about something. The same way how he did with SS HD. TotK in-depth will be reserved for Treehouse. Not Direct. And Zelda does not need much in-depth either way.
