I'd love to see Prime 4 come out this year, but doesn't it make more sense to save it for Switch 2? Even more than 3D Mario. A technical showcase title, hyped for years, available on a system where there's less competition? That's a perfect storm. It worked for Zelda after all.

Getting a remaster of the second best game of all time, or Thousand Year Door?

Yeah, I'd go with the second best game of all time

I've never argued nobody should want it and reactions like this is what's turning me off the forum.

Editing because I was going to post more, and I don't want to trigger drama, bit I'm too tired to respond properly to this.

I'm not advocating nobody talks about it or that it's unreasonable to want new hardware - just that it's not entirely unpredictable that it might take longer than we're used too to get there. There's a global pandemic that will have delayed things, and systems like PS3 and 360 went 7 to 8 years without Pro upgrades until their replacement.

If you read my post and saw an attack, then that simply demonstrates how out of whack this discourse is now.
I didn't see an attack. Yeah, my reply (or, as you put it "a reaction like this") was long and very direct, but it was because I felt the point you made was fundamentally flawed for something that accused others of having a skewed perspective. Not because I thought you were on the war path with anyone who demands a Switch 2.

I may be miserable now but once it's #TomodachiTime that's all I'll talk about
Gotta say, I love the idea of Tomadachi Life but I just can't see myself buying it and playing it. It's definitely weird in that regard.

I do hope they try and use some form of faster loading in the carts or internal memory as that's one of the things i love about the PS5.

A good, general piece of advice: if you need to take a break from the forum because of the forum itself, rather than something going on in your life, you don't need to announce it. It makes other people feel bad, it often results in the argument (or tone, or whatever caused your feeling of bad vibes in the first place) being relitigated, and it can mean a bunch of @s when you return from people wanting to fight

Just take the break and come back when you're ready. Everyone will be very happy to have you back

I never got good at the new Miitopia makeup so I'm gonna be so far behind in Tomodachi

...unless Tomodachi has been in development for years, far longer than the Switch Miitopia port

I do think there's a very obvious skewed perspective here - people taking an unproven, labyrinthine and contradictory morass of rumours and leaks as fact. That's what I'm referring to. We should all treat that information as conditional, and not attach to it the weight that actual, confirmed information has.

The hardware talk is the most obvious and long running example of this, but it's part of the forum culture that can be exhausting (even for people like me who enjoy keeping tabs on things), and it's a recurrent issue.

On the surface, perhaps; but the power gap between Wii U and Switch is going to be far less than we will see between Switch and the successor. Prime 4 has been developed with Switch in mind all these years. The successor being a meaningful leap in performance and fidelity would better lend itself to software specifically tailored for its features. Maybe we get a deluxe version or something.

I'm still committed to 3D Mario being the "wow, look at the power" game

Yeah, I don't mean to imply @Plum is at all responsible for my current state of mind or my feelings towards the forum right now, so I think it's fair I'm up front about that and apologise because, general as this advice is, it's very clearly directed towards me!

Equally I feel no shame in saying that I think vibes have taken a turn for the worse in recent weeks, and I've seen other members say similar things. The forum culture was meant to be (and largely is) welcoming and supportive of one another, distinct to and less extreme than other forums, and I think it's worth trying to articulate the times when that's looking sketchy. Obviously, as I've amply demonstrated in multiple posts, it's actually very difficult to get that across or do anything constructive about it.

It's not the whole reason I'm taking a break - there's life stuff that sharpens all this - but I think people should say if they're dissatisfied with things. All of us - myself included - contribute to the atmosphere here and sometimes we're not cognisant of how that affects others.

Anyway, a long and indirect post is out of keeping with the Direct thread. I go now to become the last Metroid in captivity; may the galaxy be at peace.

And, frankly, if you do it almost immediately after someone else posts something… it just makes them out to be a villain in the situation. Which, yeah, makes them feel shitty.

@MisterSpo Just saw the disclaimer up above, and thank you for that and the apology, but I’m not gonna deny that it still hurt a bit.

Great episode btw Nate. I can’t believe you finally admit that Super Mario Sunshine is the best game ever

I definitely agree that the vibes are horrendous but I don't think it's anyone's fault

okay, maybe it's a little my fault but what can I say, I'm impish by nature

This is what I believe too. Kinda weird to think it never really felt that way with Odyssey because of Breath of the Wild's status as an open world game, now that I think about it (even if Odyssey looked better in certain levels).

Great podcast this week. :)

I'm going to disagree heavily on this. The Wii U is damn near a Switch as is. Tears of the Kingdom so far doesn't look much improved over Breath of the Wild on Wii U. If the rumored Switch 2 specs are accurate, it will be a much larger upgrade the Wii U to Switch. I would say significantly so. Even if it was base PS4 specs. A system that gave us Horizon Zero Dawn, Horizon Forbidden West, Last of Us Part 2, Sackboy, etc.

The rumored Drake specs is a significant upgrade over Switch and a much bigger leap then going from Wii U to Switch and with DLSS it could be closer to a PS4 Pro even.

Of course to be clear, I don't know how Nintendo themselves will utilize this hardware. Could be mostly Switch visuals with higher resolution and framerates and nothing more. That being said, my guess is big games will focus at 2K/30 while pushing visuals (like the next Mario) but all of this is speculation.

Final note, not attacking your opinion, just disagreeing in a friendly manner. Great podcast episode btw. :)
That's what I said, though. The gap between Wii U and Switch is less than we will see between Switch and Successor.

when the doom is so strong you lose the ability to read

(not criticism, I've been there myself lmao)

Would definitely make the most sense. Bowser’s Fury struggled uncharacteristically for the Mario series and, presumably, the next game is going to build on the formula laid down there.

Tbh I think bad vibes are natural sometimes. It’s very, very hard to be happy about a hobby literally all the time. Especially one with the unpredictable, wacky Nintendo at the helm lol.

Think that was mostly just a case of open worlds being more impressive to people than relatively small sandbox levels.

Though I do feel Odyssey was a bit less consistent graphically than BotW was. That was definitely part of its charm but in some instances it definitely hurt more than it helped for me (biggest example being the Forest Kingdom).

With how long games take to make these days, how much can they really tailor then to a new system, at least when discussing games releasing in the first year or two of a new system's life? The time period between the hardware being finalized/teams getting dev kits to the launch of a new system is far shorter than a normal development cycle of a "big" game.

Great ep for 2023 bud aswell!

Switch or Switch 2 aside, I do expect Prime 4 to be a looker. Retro are technical wizards. Ditto for Prime remake.

Yeah Odyssey is a weird beast. I think stuff like the Sand Kingdom, Lost Kingdom, etc are great and on par with the best stuff on Switch. But stuff like Metro and honestly even the opening Dinosaur level is .... eh

They never got grass right in that game, as nitpicky as it is to say

Depends the studio, I'd say. Nintendo can prioritize which teams get early access to final silicon.

The only thing I can think reading this thread is that some of you just need to go outside. There’s a lot more to life than video games.
*walks outside*
*immediately begins sweating from the heat (even though it's January)*
*sees there are people out here*
*goes back inside and boots up Chrono Cross on his Nintendo Switch™*

yeah. Vibes have been down lately.

Winter break was fun cause no one expected anything and just posted some good old memes and video games talking.

I admittedly don’t like direct season. Back at era or here. Also upcoming switch 2 makes it worst the usual. Not saying everyone should be happy or like what they see. We like what we like of course. Just, personally, I can’t get myself to care enough to be disappointed on Nintendo directs, games or consoles. And if I do get disappointed, I move on so quick cause “welp can’t do nothing, maybe next time it’ll be better”. But it does suck to see some folks here be disappointed regularly. If I was Nintendo, I would give y’all what you want.

Granted. I’ll probably bankrupt the company cause I ain’t gotta a clue. But I’ll make ya happy for a short time if I can.

Nintendo being the evil bastards that they are. Made a home console that you can take outside.

We’re trapped!

Couldn't it just be a BOTW situation with both versions launching alongside Switch 2? I'd be shocked if Prime 4 came out before the Switch 2 did.

Prime 4 has probably only been in development since late 2019 anyways. Then COVID happened. I wouldn't be surprised if they're nowhere close to done right now.

TBF, hardware or no hardware, January is always an antsy time for us forum dwellers, and that isn't limited to just Nintendo fans.

It'll be better after the Direct and there are more games/footage to discuss, hopefully. Then hardware can be on the backburner for a while
