Oh, thank you for your answer! I didn't know that
Yeah, it's rather unfortunate while Nintendo wants to maintain a chokehold on the precise image of Mario games that it leads to crushing creative liberties like this. I certainly didn't feel Paper Mario detracted from the image of a friendly plumber looking to save the day, but this in addition to decreased emphasis on story (...for the game literally titled "Mario Story" in Japan), and the paper mechanics being taken far too literally with these stationery bosses, to these weird combat schemes shaken up for the sake of it without any kind of cohesion (I actively avoided as many minion battles from third chapter onwards as much as possible), all I can do is wash my hands of the series and walk away.

I intentionally bought TOK physically with the expectation I'd resell it down the line, and after completing the game my opinion never changed. I can only recommend the game to people who have no sentimental attachment to the first two games. Any future PM entries I can't see myself playing unless reviews come out specifically mentioning the return of traditional turn-based combat. Until then, all I can rely on is my old hardware not failing and the likes of indies such as Bug Fables carrying the torch.

Mario Movie with floating islands too

We are getting new 3D Mario this year then, there is no way we aren't.
I hope you're right.
I can see it being holiday 2024 if development only began in 2019 or up until then it was something cancelled or pre-production. I think it should've started by late 2018 so this year makes the most sense..

Yeah, I am not that disappointed thinking that there is 3D Mario this year. It's a bummer it won't be for new hardware? Yes. Will it still be one hell of a masterpiece? Yes.
I'm not disappointed at it not being at new hardware either because it being on current Switch means I can play it.
I think they've found a lot of clever solutions as to how make games look and play great on Switch (the jump from Splatoon 2 to 3 and from Xenoblade 2/DE to 3 speaks for itself), whatever the next Mario is it'll be great. As in being the best looking Switch game not named LM3 levels of great.
well they could sell it with something like Luigi's Mansion 4. There is plenty of options. Either way, we should know better in next weeks were we stand with 2D/3D Mario.
The last time they didn't it didn't turn out well 😓
But I can see it doing great now, as LM3 came to the selling point of 3D Mario not named-Odyssey and selling better than any Zelda not named BotW.
Will also be the absolute best looking game possible to launch the console with.
Not to mention the launch day isn't the only important thing, it has to have a great launch window, so, launch in October with Luigi's Mansion 4 or Metroid Prime 4, November having a cross gen Pokemon game, the next H1 having MK or AC can do fantastically.
nah, 3D Mario can and will wait

next 3D Mario will blow people away in holiday 2025
Jesus no 😭
8 years is a lot of damn time
I think 7 years can be likely tho if it's late 2024 cross gen
My own guess for this year's big Mario game is Mario vs DK, simply named as Mario vs Donkey Kong 23. An ode to one of the best Game Boy games ever made, a true successor. Will have both 3D and 2D stages and option to play as Movie Mario and Movie DK. And a custom stage maker.
That's my dream. An actually ambitious game that's a sequel to both mainline Mario and mainline Pokémon like Donkey Kong 94 felt. Would be a masterpiece definitely.
I see almost none of those games except Pokemon and Animal Crossing being massive system sellers though (Splatoon will probably be around 2026 though it will sell systems) and Pokemon will surely be cross-gen. These are like 5m sellers or games that don't push hardware.

The Switch 2 just not having any of its 25m+ selling franchises on it (except maybe Animal Crossing?) until late 2027 or later? Baffling plan when Nintendo relies so much on first-party software.
I think, assuming it launches early 2025:
  • Mario Kart Next at launch;
  • Animal Crossing before the end of 2026;
  • Pokémon cross gen gen 10 launch year(already more than Switch had)
It would be literally just mainline new 3D Mario and 3D Zelda waiting til 2027, with those getting remakes in the meantime.
I mean, if anything it was weird to me that they were launching new Splatoon game in 9.2022 when the new hardware would come 8 months after that (May 2023). Holiday 2023 at least made some sense with possible 3D Mario(?).
Yeah it never made any sense to me. Now that we know that Zelda probably was never meant to be launched with hardware (unless it was once planned to launch with OLED?).
I mean the February 2022 Direct gave huge "Switch 2 is never coming lmao" vibes. I believe February 2023 will give this sentiment a huge boost when they show TOTK on current Switch and everybody forgets they once wanted a Switch 2. If they show any 2024 game like an Astral Chain 2 or Metroid Prime 4 it will be hilarious lol.
People in enthusiast forums underestimate the power of 2D Mario. A good, interesting new 2D Mario tied with the launch of an interesting new console could make for an insane launch. (Along with another more core-focused first party game)

The instance of Wii U/NSMBU doesn't count. It was the fucking Wii U and fucking New Super Mario Bros again lol
This lol. NSMB gave DS a lot of new buyers, NSMB Wii gave Wii new life on holiday 2009. Also we shouldn't forget that NES and SNES were released with 2D Mario's and did great. Up until Odyssey, 2D Mario was miles ahead of 3D Mario in sales and mass appeal.

I think that if they use the movie hype right, having a new 2D or 3D Mario on the holiday season following TotK and maybe also having a budget model will make Switch get near 20M once more.

Mario Rabbids 2 - too good for Switch, it's a next gen-footage.

Zelda TotK delay video footage - too good for Switch, it's a next-gen footage.

Pikmin 4 - too good for Switch, it's a next-gen footage.
It all started with Splatoon 3 on the February 2021 Direct lol and then the game came and people suddenly moved the discourse to "see? Switch got a game that looks exactly like it's predecessor!!".
Does anyone know how much staff overlap was shared between Astral Chain and Bayonetta 3? I could see Astral Chain 2 as a late Switch exclusive before the successor is released.
If anyone that's more into Platinum and their teams and leads can give us this information I will be very happy too!!

I don't think the games shared most of their leads IIRC. Also I think most of the bulk of the teams were different too, as I don't see anyway Bayonetta 3 would have started development late 2019 and be ready late 2022, I think we have suggestions it's been in development since way before that(not to mention being announced in 2017).

I'm a believer Astral Chain 2 is a 2024 game.
not 3D Mario, Mario Kart, Smash, or Prime 4, though. for the sort of person who doesn't appreciate weirdo stuff like me I can see how that'd disappoint
I think literally no one of us ever expected to be talking about Smash ever since Ultimate was released. Even if Drake was 2022 a new Smash would take a while to come.
Mario Kart was always once in a console, but after the DLC announcement we shouldn't have been expecting one anytime soon, even if Drake was 2022.
3D Mario can still come to current Switch or be cross gen and we actually have evidence of one being in development. Nothing changes, moreso for people that weren't expecting a new one on Switch.
Metroid Prime 4... Is still on the same boat it's ever been. It would've been 2024 with Drake releasing in 2022 or 2025. And will come to Switch OG even if it releases in 2025.

I don't see plausible remakes for 3D Mario or 3D Zelda incoming if Grezzo is done with remakes.

Ports of Wind Waker and Twilight Princess, sure, but no ports of 3D Mario games are plausible and serious remakes of Mario 64 and OoT would have to be handled by a huge dev team.

If Alpha Dream was allowed to remake Superstar Saga with the original characters then Intelligent Systems would be allowed to remake TTYD if they wanted.

Y'all Sony released The Last of Us literally the month before PS4 came out exclusively for PS3 and The Last of Us Part II literally 5 months before PS5 came out exclusively for PS4. Also it's launch game and sole exclusive for awhile was a PS3 remaster/remake, and the 2 biggest releases of PS5 in 2022 were PS4 games.

Nintendo will do fine releasing 3D Zelda this year and releasing 3D Mario before hardware. They'll also do fine even if they release cross gen games into 1 or 2 years after the successor comes.

Hmm, that decision literally destroys creative freedom, seems pretty ridiculous.
I can't say I'm a Paper Mario fan, my first one was Color Splash, I couldn't finish it, then I bought TOK and didn't finish it either.
But I wanted to try TTYD, so I played it on Gamecube emulator and didn't finish it lol, but this time for a different reason: I liked it so much that I wanted to actually buy it for GC, or wait for a proper remaster to play it. It feels sooo different, I can't wait to play it!

Not even just this, AlphaDream remade Bowser's Inside Story and somehow got to make entirely new OCs just for the Bowser Jr minigame campaign, so you'd think TTYD would be more than safe

On the subject of remakes of beloved GameCube games, would any of y'all be interested in purchasing an Animal Crossing update in the New Horizons engine, or nah?

It's probably too much work for too little return for Nintendo, but I'd legit pay full price for it (or City Folk, which I never played) in the NH engine.

The only issue is that Playstation sales are often driven by Call of Duty, Assassin's Creed, etc, whereas Nintendo has to rely a lot more on first-party which makes it more questionable.

I think it will do fine still, but I would be surprised if the next 3D Mario launched before the Switch 2. I think that's too big of a risk for Nintendo.

Can't say I blame you for wanting to wait. I ended up emulating Pikmin for a while but the game keeps crashing every time I load up The Forest Navel, and my Gamecube is buried in storage and I likely won't be able to unpack it properly until March at the earliest. I've been dying to replay those and so many other GS games which is why I've been fiending for Gamecube on NSO or at least some kind of remasters/remakes on Switch (even if it means less games overall), but trying to set up my personal hopes and expectations that I deem reasonable for Nintendo to fulfill is an act of futility it seems haha

At the very least, if Paper Mario hasn't clicked for you before, I'm sure TTYD absolutely will whether you get to play on genuine hardware or it gets a remake like it deserves

I joked about the n64 animal crossing(which became the gamecube version iirc) coming to NSO a little while ago. I would love to play the original animal crossing haha.

Nintendo should just inject the next Direct into our brains immediately so that we can get this stupid charade over and done with

DOWN WITH STREAMING DIRECTS

UP WITH INJECTING DIRECTS STRAIGHT INTO OUR BRAINS

Tears of the kingdom will look good on Switch who care. And when the next console will be backward compatible it will be amazing to replay the 2 games.

And for ToTK marketing cycle. God of War R got it's marketing started pretty late and it worked. 3D all star same thing. Information gets out so much faster now they could start only 2 months before the game releases and it would be fine.
But in our heart's we want some news now. We can't wait that long!

I mean, if they were going to do any, they might as well do New leaf since the games were pretty much small iterative improvements prior to NH.

On the subject of Mario characters; it's kind of weird that Mario Odyssey, despite being so successful, hasn't really added many new players into the Mario 'canon' in the way its predecessors did. Examples being The Piantas and Bowser Jr/Shadow Mario from Sunshine, and Rosalina/The Lumas from Galaxy. All that can really be said for the game is that it reintroduced Pauline into the series, but that's kind of it.

It's why I'm really interested in finally seeing an entirely new console Mario Kart game. Mario Kart is essentially still stuck in the Wii era for its inspiration (with exceptions from its initial run of DLC), and Mario Kart Tour's mobile/gacha limitations are really limiting overall. So it feels that if we're gonna see any of Odyssey's characters become more of a "mainstay" then we'll see it there. If not, I can only assume - especially with the lack of much Odyssey representation in all other Mario spin-offs - that Nintendo just... doesn't want to add many more 'mainstay' characters to the franchise.

Can't really parse the hardware thread but Nintendo must've really fucked up if they thought an F Zero GX remaster was the answer to the problem

jk

There is not much about Odyssey that was a flop, but the Broodals were a complete flop.

We’ve not had anything more regarding The Witcher 3 patch for Switch patch have we? Wonder if that will be a Nintendo Twitter drop announcement when it goes live

That's weird we still haven't gotten the patch. I was gonna wait to start playing the game until after the patch released as it's been sitting in my backlog for over two years now when I got it on sale

Same, holding off on the patch to see what it comes with (expecting some of the mods to come over along with the Netflix DLC)

Ohhhh yay new podcast from daddy Nate

Always loved listening to them, not for leaks or juicy rumours, but I just love hearing his thoughts and insights on stuff. I will admit, I haven’t listened to any since probably September (fake don’t @ me), but I guess today will be dedicated to catching up hehd

It's me. I am the Nintendo Direct. I was waiting and watching to see how strong your faith me was. Unfortunately, this community has lacked fortitude and let itself be consumed by doom posting. Only the most faithful and worthy may gaze upon my new game announcements, shadow drops, and one more things. You failed and the only way to redeem this forum is to flood and start anew.
