not speaking to anyone here on fami, but jesus watching people spin a thread of DOOM rooted entirely in their uneducated and overhyped beliefs of Nintendo after this morning's "news" is the worst

Y'know holiday 2024 isn't even that far away, like, we literally only have one more full year of the Switch and then by E3 next year, it'll be time to learn all about next gen (or maybe they'll wait till the fall to share the deets if they want a Q1 2025 release)

I'm very excited to see what gems Nintendo plans on giving us this year, and even more excited for what's in store after that. Never in a million years would I think that we'd be less than four months away from a new 3D Zelda and people would be this sour on Nintendo's future. I know I've been chanting February Direct Mini for some time now, but knowing my prediction track record, we'll probably just get a full Direct come next month, with like, 4 major game reveals, and all this doom and gloom will look very, VERY silly

it might be because the Zelda doesn't feel very new...
God imagine if they gave this game the buildup BOTW got, we'd NEVER see comments like this. It doesn't feel new because there's literally only like 3 minutes total of gameplay teases, as opposed to the well-over 24 hours of BOTW footage we could sink into (and that was 9 months before launch!)

I'm not even a big Zelda fan at all, Never even touched most of them, but I know for a fact once they actually start talking about this game, everyone's gonna be too busy losing it to even remember the fear that the game may just be a third wave of DLC

not 3D Mario, Mario Kart, Smash, or Prime 4, though. for the sort of person who doesn't appreciate weirdo stuff like me I can see how that'd disappoint

Why wouldn't Prime 4 come out in the next year or so? It's coming out for the Switch, like preciously announced.

We will maybe not get 3D Mario, but for sure a game from the team that made Odyssey on the Switch in the next year or so. They have been working on something since late 2017 and their target platform has always been the Switch as well.

I do wonder if Prime 4 falls under the “flagship” category that Nintendo is supposedly saving for the next console. If the game is approaching completion, and the launch title is 3D Mario, I could see it as a summer 2024 title as the Switch’s last hurrah, with a next-gen patch planned. Would be rather poetic for that if all games to be the final major title for the platform that isn’t cross-gen at launch.

with what we know so far

that will soon change, I guarantee it (or will eat stinky horse)

Eg. a screenshot comparison of OOT and MM can tell a very different story than the reality of playing each of them.

Prime 4 is seeming very expensive from the caliber of hires, so I suspect it's targeting something bigger

that one is definitely especially speculative on my part. all I'm sure about is 3D Mario, Kart, and Smash (plus obvious ones like 3D Zelda and Animal Crossing)

It doesn't "feel" like anything yet because we barely know anything about the game. Looking back at the lead up to BotW we didn't even know the game would have towns, and it was hotly debated if it would or not. Then the January 2017 Switch showcase hit and we got towns, voice acting, story cutscenes, and major npc allies revealed all shown in a 3 minute hit you in the face trailer that caused the hype to explode.

Was the whole team working on Federation Force?

2013: LM2
2016: Federation Force
2019: LM3
2022: Strikers Switch

It feels like this is getting pretty consistent
Not sure about Federation Force since there was some talk from devs how LM3 begun it's early development on the Wii U. Either way, I think late 2024 for LM4 isn't that unlikely.

Well, I can't do anything about your weird assumptions when it comes to Prime. 4 is for sure coming out for the Switch, the hires indicate nothing in one way or another.

The only game we for sure won't get on the Switch is Mario Kart and SSB. Everything else is either happening or still not at all out of the picture.

I know nothing about the inner workings of IS nor am I making anything beyond a prediction

but, if they are/were doing heavy lifting on FE Engage, I like to think that might make it a perfect time to knock out a PM Remake of the original or TTYD - takes some pressure off of (shared?) art / design departments, but keeps the devs busy and reuses plenty of groundwork from TOK.

Prime 4 is in a bit of a weird spot tech-wise.

If the game is open-world, obviously it can run on Switch, but open-world games can be a little rough on Switch. Would assume 720p-900p, 30 fps like other open-world games on Switch with some dips.

If the game is linear and small environment like the first three games in the series, then it draws comparisons to other linear and small environment games like God of War and DOOM and that will be a little awkward graphically on 2015 mobile hardware, lol.

The people "sour" on Nintendo's future are a very small but annoyingly loud minority.

ToTK just won most anticipated game of the year at the Game Awards a little over a month ago. The Switch was the best selling console in basically every single region last year. We have Nintendo software breaking records left and right. Unprecedented third party support. Metroid and Pikimin are back. Mario movie and theme parks are opening this year!

Nintendo is fine. I'm sorry that people got so caught up in speculation that they can't see the forest for the trees. But comparing Nintendo of today to WiiU Nintendo... It's like night and day difference. I suggest go consume those Directs for awhile and see how sour things can get! 🤪

I'm definitely inclined to believe it's pushing to be a AAA-adjacent game that they'll want to make into a big deal. The new hires have been wild, so I really expect it to be ambitious regardless of where it ends up.

I'm very glad Nate dashed the hopes of any hardware anytime soon, seems like he is the only person people really seriously listen to here.

You have so many literal direct statements signals coming out every pore from Nintendo that their next generation hardware is still some time away. Disappointment for those of you was the only destination.

You will get some doomposting now, but don't worry, lots of Nintendo games to look forward to.
But all Nate did was speculate. I think this site has a problem with taking simple speculation and doing the 100 meter dash with it. No hate to Nate (heh), but I find it irksome just how many people take these insider's words as confirmation of anything without enough people scrutinizing them. Just look at the hardware thread.

Prime development restarted in 2019, it's been 3 years and 1 pandemic later. With the fact the Switch successor may actually be late 2024 it's hard to believe that Prime 4 started life as a Switch successor game. It started life as a Switch game and will likely release as only a Switch game. This feels like the year that Prime 4 is reintroduced to the world alongside the Prime 1 remake.

Whatever you are trying to say about Prime 4 being as far away as the Switch successor.
from a timeline perspective I could see it being sooner but I think it's too compelling as a next gen game to waste

they delayed Zelda because it would strengthen the new hardware's feeling of newness and "AAA-ness" and I suspect Metroid Prime 4, bolstered by hires from across the western industry, will be of similar value

maybe it really is too long to justify. I'm imagine a shift from mid 2024 to early 2025, but if it's almost done I guess that's unrealistic

Excited for Nate's next podcast where he will confirm Baten Kaitos Remake, 2D Mario, Metroid Prime and Buddy Mission Bond for this year

Some of the doomposting on this thread and the hardware thread is starting to get to me, so I'm just gonna bounce. See y'all tomorrow, hopefully by then, things won't feel as annoying.

Edit: I don't know how to feel about this being my most Yeah'd post to date.

later people will complain and say that the insiders are lying. Normal, when just to speculate they take X data as the absolute truth.

I honestly think they should just remaster TTYD next before doing a new Paper Mario

I agree, they need to revisit the classic Paper Mario formula and really see what kind of public reaction they would get from it along with those sales numbers from the switch install base, because its no secret that the Gamecube’s install base was laughable.

I’m a grown ass man and I know what I like. I’m not afraid to admit this, Paper Mario TTYD is my favorite video game of all time.

My thoughts on Prime 4

1. It's being designed for Switch (unless it had another cancellation and reboot in like 2021)
2. It's probably the Nintendo franchise least suited for low powered hardware so it's an awkward fit with the Switch 1 in 2024.

This is a graphical powerhouse franchise that has struggled a bit to adjust to Nintendo's shift away from top tier hardware (with three console games since 2004) and I'm not sure what direction they'll take now.

I hope Nintendo shows NOTHING of ToTK in the February Direct, and instead only announces DLC for it.
It would be funny.
Nah, let's go for maximum salt. Nintendo announced a ToTK direct and it's 50 minutes of:

At the end of the 50 minutes he finally looks directly at the camera, opens his mouth, takes in a breath...and the direct ends.

I doubt a TTYD remake would ever happen due to the restrictions on the pre-established characters. Kinda sucks.

Personally, I’m surprised at the sudden uptick in doom and gloom today. Didn’t we go through the same song and dance a few weeks ago?

Nothing that I’ve seen today feels like new information, so I dunno why people are reacting to it as such.

This is more of a dam break situation where it was becoming increasingly clear for several months that there wasn't new hardware coming until at least holiday 2023 and possibly not until late 2024, but even people who believed in the Switch Pro starting to switch to team late 2024 has eliminated the hopium people were acting on to think new hardware was right around the corner.

I'm also strongly hoping for TTYD as a remaster, especially as it seems more likely than Gamecube coming to NSO at this rate and emulating TTYD.

I loved Paper Mario, and I accept that the new direction of the series is not for me and I hope everyone else enjoys future entries, but I sure hope it'll be easier to play my personal favourite from the Gamecube sooner rather than later.

Well, if they were going to do a remake should TTYD or the original Paper Mario be remade?
I think there’s pros and cons on both sides.
TTYD could look beautiful and would benefit more from issues being fixed.
While it would be really cool to see the original in the “modern” Paper character designs that have existed since TTYD.

I think it will be interesting to see the next Paper Mario game, because it’s either gonna be a Switch swan song or a Switch 2 launch / near launch title

I think remakes and remasters are allowed to do their own thing, regardless of current guidelines. Peach hasn't been called Princess Toadstool in games since the late SNES/early N64 era, but when they remade Mario 64 for the DS she retained the Toadstool name.

The original Paper Mario is available on the Switch. TTYD isn’t.

That’s enough for me to want TTYD over 64.

It's always the same thing and I'm surprised it isn't just a running gag anymore.

Since I have been following gaming news from 2011 onward you have these pre-announcement and pre-release Nintendo hardware discussion threads that built up all these sure-to-happen "assumptions", leaks that "definitely say that and that is happening" and standardized "things Nintendo 100% need to do otherwise they will crash and burn". And it always ends in temper tantrums similar to a 6 year old child that expected to get a Happy Meal just because their parents drove by a McDonalds.

These threads (and to a lesser degree these type of communities) are extremely insular bubbles that built up insider exclusive expectations and a culture of driving wishful assumptions, wishful speculation and real (but either wrongly interpreted or just outdated) leaks into the ground to the point that everyone thinks that they have figured out the future pipeline and 100% know what's supposed to happen. Always hidden under the veil of "speculation", but repeat and built discourse around that speculation a billion times, maybe sprinkle some leaks and insiders that get interpreted with an extreme bias in there and that veil unnoticingly vanished and it's their literal subjective reality.

I still remember tirelessly arguing on GAF with these exact people, which all believed the Switch will be more powerful, will have a way lower price and will have whatever insane launch window line-up they dreamt up across 2 years. That's why I stay away from these hardware threads since the Wii U and just pick discussion when I really have time to waste and nothing better to do. Literally no stopping that train.

Ew no, I hate Paper Mario, way too cute for me. IntSys's next project should be Codename STEAM remaster AND a sequel. I feel the story left unfinished there.
Abe is still alive!

For a new Mario RPG, Nintendo needs to form a new studio out of ex AlphaDream talent and greenlight a M&L Project called: Mario & Luigi Lost in Wario World!
