I don’t think there’s a lot of options from Nintendo’s catalogue. I don’t think they care to touch some obscure IP like Star Tropics. I think they’d probably prefer to revive a good old IP like they did with DKC or make a new IP (be it a spin-of from Zelda or outright brand new).

Any old IP they’d try to make a new game I could see would be

-Star Fox (not really old)
-Diddy Kong Racing
-Eternal Darkness

Next Level Games revived Punch Out and continued Luigi’s Mansion.
Its 2027, we re all been shocked by next level games's gory spiritual sequel to eternal darkness which got multiple acclaim reviews. Some were skeptical of their game but due to the fact theyare canadians and silicon knights was canadian they proved the critics wrong.

Probably too early with the BN Legacy Collection still not out. If we're going to get something from Capcom I think it would be something Ace Attorney.

Ace Attorney 7
Great Ace Attorney 3
Ace Attorney Trilogy 2
Ace Attorney Investigations Chronicles

Great Ace Attorney Chronicles came out in summer 2021 and by all accounts seemed to do well for Capcom. I think any of the four above is extremely likely. Ideally all 4 will happen over the next decade.

I really hope we get at least one of these this year. AA7 teaser for 2024 with a Trilogy 2 announcement that launches shortly afterwards makes the most sense to me. I would love Investigations to come too as I’ve not played either of those.

I think I remember the Capcom leak saying its target for GAA was 300k? They did a celebratory artwork for it selling 500k in April 2022 so I’d imagine it’s racked up even more sales since then. Hopefully Capcom are extremely happy with that and decide to go all in on the series again.

Using my 2023 prediction post as a base here, along with some extras.

Likely
  • The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
  • Pikmin 4
  • Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon
  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe BCP Wave 4
  • Xenoblade Chronicles 3 Expansion Pass Wave 3
  • Goldeneye 007 NSO (if not at the Xbox Direct later this month)
  • Metroid Prime HD

Somewhat likely
  • Splatoon 3 Single Player DLC
  • Metroid Prime 4 (if they want to link the announcement with Prime HD)
  • New 2D Mario (personally predicting this to be the opener)
  • Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp (shove it into the direct montage if releasing soon)
  • Tomodachi Life Switch (two the leads have disappeared since Miitomo ended, so I think Nintendo could slot this in during the Spring)
  • NDcube title (some Super Mario Party staff haven’t been seen since that game, including the lead game designer)
  • Non-Kirby HAL title (RtDL DX is more than likely being handled by Vanpool and some staff like the BoxBoy series producer haven’t been credited in a while)
  • Style Savvy (Syn Sophia started hiring for a fashion game over two years ago)
  • Arika title (Pac-Man 99 had no involvement from EPD, received little post-launch support, and was made a by a mostly different team within Arika)

Unlikely
  • Buddy Mission BOND (sorry MondoMega)
  • Xenoblade Chronicles 3 Expansion Pass Wave 4 (deadline isn’t until the end of December so I can see them holding off until later in the year)
  • GB/GBC/GBA NSO (could happen, but based on the rate of the upcoming N64 games, I’m expecting things to be filled up until at least June)
  • Pokémon Scarlet/Violet DLC
  • Detective Pikachu 2 (both it and the SV DLC will be saved for the next Pokémon Presents)
  • EPD Tokyo 3D/2D Action Games (one will be saved for E3, the other for the September direct)
  • Bandai Namco Studios 3D Action Remaster
  • Ring Fit Adventure 2
  • Rhythm Heaven Switch
  • Jet Dragon (could be published by Nintendo in the west, but I’m not expecting to see it yet anyway)
  • Good-Feel title (I know it’s due at this point, but I could see a bit of a longer wait, especially if it turns out to be a platformer and 2D Mario also happens)
  • NST title (still a bit soon since Bowser’s Fury, especiallly if they’re working on multiple projects)

Jesus the thing with Capcom is those schedules with stuff from 2025 leaking in 2020 lol.
Is there something about MH NS/Rise 2? Or just "World 2"?

'MH6' was also due later this year but I'm guessing that will come a bit later instead, Dragon's Dogma 2 should have been out now so I think that might show up first.

RE Apocalypse is RE9, which of course will happen, likely early 2025 as both VII ane Village got a 4 year development cycle. Capcom wants RE to be an with annual entries per FY.

So if RE title FY2024/25 is Apocalypse, what can be next FY title? Can it be the long rumoured time exclusive Switch bound RE game ? Now with an upgraded Switch 2 version.

An to add speculation, I can see Capcom remaking RE1 Remake and 0 for early 2026 (30th anniversary) and 2027. 2028 and afterwards is very uncertain honestly.

As far as I've seen the only thing linking Apocalypse to RE9 has been dubious 4chan posts. It would mean 4RE and RE9 were originally scheduled for the same calendar year, which doesn't feel right to me.
Of course there's every chance Apocalypse could have been yet another ill-fated PvP spin-off game or something like that, so it's not worth counting on anything yet.

Yeah I would expect any unreleased Capcom games on that leak to have been pushed back or even cancelled.

Ace Attorney 7 was initally scheduled for Late 2021 for the series’ 20th anniversary. Exoprimal was planned for an Early 2022 release. Sunbreak somehow came out earlier than it was supposed to (Early 2023 to Summer 2022). A Resident Evil game codenamed “Outrage” was supposed to release early last year as well, but has seemingly disappeared.

Arika maybe having something this year has generated two possibilities in my brain:

  • Dr Mario 99, or Dr Mario of some kind
  • Super Mario Kart 99

Lol they haven't cancelled AA7.

I just checked out the guy’s Linkedin page, but for me at least it doesn’t show him as working on an unannounced project. All I can see is he’s a writer who has been working with/at Retro for seven months. Now that being said, my guess is they wouldn’t be bringing in a writer four years into Metroid Prime 4’s development to work on story. I’d assume the heavy duty narrative work is more or less complete.

One interesting note from his profile:

“As a writer, I have experience world building and designing narrative for video games. This encompasses VO scripts with dynamic dialogue, as well as casting/directing recording sessions with VO talent. I've lent a hand in conceptualizing level design, themes, and tone. I'm a trained actor, improviser, and voice actor, and love to use these tools while breaking stories and characters. I write and direct short films, both animated and live action.”

The comment on branching/dynamic dialogue is super interesting and again suggests something other than Metroid. I don’t think this means that Metroid Prime 4 is coming soon (there will be a gap between Prime 1 Remastered and this), but could mean that it’s progressed far enough that Retro is starting pre-production on their next title. And based on this new writer, perhaps it’s a narrative heavy title.

Man, few things would make me more excited than a GAA3 announcement. TGAAC thankfully sold well, so there is a chance, but i won't hold my breath

I wonder if Retro was able to retain a lot of talent after 10 years without releasing a new game. That must be incredibly frustrating to work there.
I guess we'll know soon enough.

In terms of 2023 releases, I think everything is dependent on when Switch is releasing. To me, I think a spring 2024 is the most likely release window for a successor, which means Nintendo is going to save some of its heavy hitters for next year.

EPD Tokyo not having released a new title since Mario Odyssey is pretty wild. It’s been nearly six years given Odyssey was compete well in advance of its release date. I’ve heard all the reasons for this (COVID, new building, new game engine, etc), but I don’t think that fully explains it. To me, I think it’s pretty clear that they split up their group and are now developing two titles. One of those is obviously a 3D Mario title and my guess is this is being saved to be a Switch 2 exclusive (holiday 2024). The second is the rumored Donkey Kong title. If the the latter is 2D, which the hiring rumors suggest, I think we see it released this year.

For Retro, 2023 should finally be the year Metroid Prime Remastered releases. I fully expect this in the next direct with a late March / early April release date. That allows Metroid Prime 4 to be a launch title for the Switch 2 (alongside what I’m guessing will be a brand new Mario Kart).

For EPD Kyoto, we already know of two releases in TOTK and Pikmin 4. Do they have one more major title in them for this year? A new 2D Mario makes the most sense if they’re trying to capitalize off the movie and they likely need some sort of holiday game anyways, even if this is the last hurrah before Switch 2. To me, this seems the most likely outcome.

Beyond the big ticket stuff, I think we see some sort of Mario Sports title released in the summer and a several ports, including the rumored F-Zero GX and the Bandai Namco action game (I’m guessing Star Fox Assault over Kid Icarus). I also think the 1-2 Switch sequel has been scrapped. Advance will finally see the light of day this year. We should also see a ton of DLC, including new Splatoon 3 single player content.

As such, I think we could be looking at something like this:

Jan: Fire Emblem Engage
Feb: Kirby’s Return to Dreamland Deluxe
Octopath Traveller 2
Mar: Bayonetta Origins
Apr: Metroid Prime Remastered
May: Tears of the Kingdom
Jun: Mario Sports: Baseball
Jul: New 2D Donkey Kong
Aug: F Zero GX HD
Advance Wars 1+2
Sep: Star Fox Assault HD
Splatoon 3 DLC (single player)
Oct: Pikmin 4
Nov: Super Mario Bros 4 (2D)
Dec: Port / DLC

About Tokyo EPD and DK, it's important to mention that the original rumor said the game was being made by a team of younger employees similarly to Odyssey, not that it was being made by the Odyssey team themselves (which came from Zippo and Nintendo Life, that speaks for itself in the credibility department)

While I like AA6, boy did it make carrying the series onwards from that point awkward. I wonder if that's complicating writing the story.
Did it? AA6 did the best thing it could have and sent Apollo away from the core cast. AA7 could then either follow Athena stepping out into a starring/co-starring role as opposed to being the 3rd wheel she was in AA5-6, or introduce a new defense lawyer to be the new Apollo with an arc actually planned out from the start and not retconned each game.

Where do I have to sign, sir?

I like Athena but I will be incredibly surprised if they ever gave her a starring role

They were, i have read that half of Corruption's team have remained at the studio and not only that: They poached from everywhere.

Just from the top of my mind - Dreamworks, Santa monica, all three call of duty studios, Respawn, Naughty Dog, Bioware, ID (a lot from ID), 343 Industries, DICE (a good amount), Eidos Montreal and Crystal Dynamics, Rockstar's executive producers, etc.

I think they doubled their size from a few years ago or are close to it; just last year they hired 25 people.

Usually i wouldnt pay much attention to it as those games are very common within the industry but one published by Nintendo? Hella interesting id say :)

Yeah. Retro has gained a lot of employees from top notch studios around the world. They have a few producers now too. More people at the top of their Art department. They’ve just been creating all kinds of brand new positions which is great to see. That shows the investment Nintendo is putting into them and how much Nintendo believes in them.

Maybe its not a cinematic game, it can be a game with a lot of lore

The only recruit coming from Rockstar that I remember was Marisa Palombo, and she has since left Retro, in October 2021, to go to Epic Games. She was replaced as lead producer in February 2022 by Jeff Moreaux, a former producer at EA and Zynga. I don't know if it's common for a lead producer to leave before the end of a project...

How would it be disrespectful to have Retro make Mother 4? Wouldn’t Itoi be giving the approval for them to make it thus meaning it’s not disrespectful?
Why would they need to? The story is over. In the world of constant sequels and remakes, I'd say leave that one alone. Actually, a remake of first 2 games to at least bring them closer to 3 would work: better animations, text pacing, all that. And with the amount of indie games being inspired by EarthBound, we don't really need any more.

Here's something I've been wondering: how many games are we actually supposed to see in near future according to rumors? Metroid Prime is a constant, but was DK and 2D Mario based on anything or just fan speculation?

True. At the same time it has been known some kind of project finished in late 2021 around the time Palumbo left, so she leaving kinda aligns with everything.

Tho i do prefer her resumee over Jeff, but we dont know what was she doing in there.

Completely agree. The whole Khura'in shtick was awkward and cringy as hell. Was it supposed to be AA version of Nepal/Bhutan? Didn't feel like it. Nayutha also was absolutely worst prosecutor in the series, dude had zero charisma.

But at least AA6 gave us a gem like Pees'lubn Andistan'dhin. The game may have the worst prosecutor but it also had the one of the best defendants.

If we’re calling Super Mario World “Super Mario Bros 4” that’s totally fine, but all I was trying to get at was the next 2D Mario game needs to move away from the “New” series and needs to be an evolution of the classic 2D Mario titles but many new innovations.

Wonder if the Splatoon 3 DLC and theoretical Pokemon DLC will come to the Expansion Pass. I'd wager yes on Splatoon, and no on Pokemon.
Splatoon has a higher chance than Pokémon yeah. How about BotW dlc? I can see that happening running up to the release of TotK, they did the same with Splatoon 2 Octo dlc

I never said they needed to do it

DK yes, have rumors about it since 2018.

Retro working on Mother is completely random. What credentials does Retro have that makes them a fit for the Mother franchise? May as well say any good developer should work on Mother.

Mother without Ito won't ever happen for obvious reasons. There is literally no point making a Mother sequel without Ito.

Give Retro Eternal Darkness, they could revive the IP

Remember years ago, there was a rumour of a Metroid x Star fox game, I think linked to Retro?
