you just aren't one with the pikmin, sorry

I have 49 pikmin so I basically am a mega pikmin pro gamer
all hail the Hallowed Vermin ProPik!

*vermin used lovingly, I love raccoons and also @Raccoon

Good weekend to everyone!

I've just been off absorbed in that blasted NSO and I have some random thoughts:
  • Winback is pretty much exactly what my child's mind thought Metal Gear Solid must be like back in the day... it's so cheesy I love it lol
  • Mario Tennis 64 is still an incredibly good game, like holy cow
  • Dr. Mario 64 is actually a secret Wario Land 3 spin-off game? Huh... how utterly bizarre
  • Did SEGA ever make anymore games with this Alys character from Phantasy Star IV? She's really cool
  • MUSHA is fantastic!
  • A couple decades later and I still can't get past the Undercaves in ECCO 🀣

I’m more curious to see what we get outside the list in the first couple waves considering it has zero Japanese third parties
I was hoping we'd at least get Mystical Ninja 64, if only for the Impact song. Mischief Makers and Space Station Silicon Valley also things I'd love to see.

I have a random, dumb idea for a next generation Mario Kart that won't happen but I love the idea so I need to throw it out.

What if the next Mario Kart had a time travel game mechanic, with stages based on past, present, and future both fictional like a cyberpunk future along with moments in earth's history like the ice age. Like all the drivers are essentially in DeLorean time machines.

Maybe they could take a bit of inspiration from Sonic CD and how different time periods had different level layouts with unique shortcuts or gimmicks, and how gaining speed (88 MPH anyone?) could trigger a time jump. Or you could have items play with space time stuff, like a powerful one can cause opponents to move in slow motion for a brief moment. Heck, have that game's version of Rainbow Road take us back to the Big Bang.
Yeah I had a similar idea a while back, it feels like the next big step to take, especially if it's one of those things that's designed to take advantage of faster loading speeds (a la Ratchet and Clank).

My idea was just standard time portals several times throughout a race, maybe each lap is in a different time period.

No, they didn't. For reasons that will become clear as you play further into the game.

Random numbers on my friends list on the trendy page.

Recently started Nintendo 64- 41
Recently started Genesis- 30
Recently started Mario Party Superstars- 18

The peak numbers for Metroid was 84~86.

Antidotal but I think Metroid is going to have some insane sales numbers (for that franchise anyway)

There's one 2023-24 game, in particular, that I can't wait to see the internet's reactions to.
I tend to forget some of these on account of just personally really not caring for having to download things, but there the software library is fairly insane , though Eternal Darkness would guarantee peak insanity.

This part of your statement, though, is especially intriguing. Most potential Nintendo games don't seem like they would garner an actual Internet Reaction; the closest I can figure would be Mother 3 / Trilogy, especially if remade into that clay style that was used in advertising.
There would be different third party IPs that I assume might get a major reaction, of course, but even those seem few.

Star Fox and Pikmin are constantly getting prototyped. Nintendo is always experimenting with those two IPs.

That doesn't mean they'll materialize into products on retail shelves.

Nintendo was prototyping a Star Fox action-adventure game before Rare's Star Fox Adventures.
I think people latched onto the statement of prototyping, and then others thought that implied a concerted effort and not just ... running through ideas. Which, prototyping implies the prototypes might not even work out.

I will say , people overly ascribe how quickly nintendo would just dumpster a series, especially after a β€œflop”. I don’t think star fox or pikmin are going anywhere any time soon , even if there isn’t anything in active development (which is not what anyone said, just being hypothetical) .

Particularly I feel folks have utterly ignored and dismissed how well pikmin has sold for what it is . on the wii u it was close to its best selling entry and far exceeded some other franchises’ title sales on what was obviously a very small install base , the port on the switch has already sold 2m copies in what was about 6 months.
Right, both IPs are particular favorites of Miyamoto, and there's no reason to believe they're going anywhere anytime soon.
Pikmin, in particular, for being a Miyamoto favorite and also selling actually rather well, if it's been stuck in prototyping all this time, we have to assume there's some reason.

If we can't get Star Fox, can we get the superior on-rails game, Kid Icarus Uprising on Switch?
I'm all for Uprising being brought to Switch, even if porting it might be incredibly involved (Throw on the older games, sure, why not)
And then a new Kid Icarus game, probably not in the Uprising style, as the franchise is built up. That could go any number of different ways.

So what you're saying is all that needs to happen for a new Eternal Darkness to be made is for me to get a job at Nintendo and slowly rise through the ranks to finally become a producer who won't shut up about it?
Do it. We need to both become higher-ups at Nintendo so we can tag-team championing Eternal Darkness, thus plunging the company into a darkness eternal unless the IP become a Nintendo mainstay.

look I’m gonna be real, I hope that someday I have an official way to play Kirby’s Air Ride again

I don’t know why I like that game so much when the controls are not particularly involved, but… I wannit
It is about time for Kirby's Anniversary celebrations.

This might be wishful thinking (points at avatar), but I feel like Wario Land has a shot given Good-Feel have done back to back Yoshi titles. Nintendo and Good-Feel can also provide more Yoshi on Switch with a Woolly World port, leaving Good-Feel and Nintendo free to tackle something else.
I actually really like the idea of a Wario Land collection leading into a whole new Wario Land adventure (Yeah, I know, it won't happen).
If Wario Land wasn't happening before, it has enough metroidvania-esque element that the success of Dread could be used as leverage to kickstart production?

Speaking about 2023-2024 games I wonder if retro is still working on that new IP that was rumored or they completely scrapped it. Even if they have to be working on something after prime 4 right.
I like the idea that anything they've scrapped could potentially return in some form, whether it actually reached production or languished as a mere concept. Does everyone remember Retro's concept art for that potentially really cute Boo game?

"The sequel to the only playable N64 game on NSO"
So I guess that rules out my Sin & Punishment Trilogy cartridge desire.

1. I wish they kept Saki from Sin and Punishment as an assist trophy in Ultimate.
I'll go further and say that I wish he'd been promoted to playable character.
Well, him or Achi, for different reasons. But Saki definitely has a distinct readily-iconic design that I think lends itself well to the game.

Forget donkey kong movie, give me a luigis mansion movie so that we get one step closer to a luigis mansion hotel or area being built in the theme parks.
The hotel is actually a spooky place for guests to stay. It's located near Luigi's Mansion and an area attributed to that Boo game, resurrected.

Pikmin is mainstream enough already
pikmin_g8c9.jpg
I was once at a museum that had a section where you go through a tunnel that "shrinks" you as go through, everything seeming to get larger as you become smaller, until you're in a little passage in the dirt with giant bugs around you.
The pikmin are already present. Journeying into their land is easy enough to incorporate.

The Internet will break when the Switch exclusive "God of War" Game is announced.

Together with Mushroom Kingdom Hearts, Haloid and New Donk City -GTA that will be an insane 2023.
Actually since Sony is putting their games on pc now and branching out you never know what may happen, From Microsoft's side Halo was supposed to come to switch and switch is even getting banjo with NSO. SO the Microsoft and Nintendo relationship looks god. I can actually see more microsoft games coming soon, don't know about a exclusive but anything is possible (probably something from rare) Going back to sony, a few years ago I didnt think that ps4 games would ever come to pc and now they are doing it so who knows what will happen next.

This is obviously just a new take on the Kid Icarus IP and the way you spun this leak won't fool me. I look forward to seeing how this series goes forward after the upcoming Uprising port.
Nah it'll be Goddess of War starring a pissed off Palutena.
FΓΌr Palutenas Verstand, Skittzo! Why do you have to beat me to the obvious Kid Icarus connection?
Aside from it being obvious, and your clear aptitude for recognizing that.

Pikmin Bloom is pretty cool so far. Been walking around doing errands and planting flowers while I’m at it :)

Someone joked(or was serious idk) about Nintendo trying to get get PS1 games for NSO and like... they totally should.

Like why not? Sony ain't gonna touch any of that old stuff ever again after the classic bomba. Folks on Switch rebuy and love talking about old games.

May as well license it out like SEGA does and make some easy money. πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

I said it and I was serious about it!

It won’t happen. But I seriously think they should!

Maybe do PC-Engine first

It was you! Yeah I think it just makes sense for every party involved.

PC-Engine seems obvious too, yeah. Bring on the Bonk!

I would probably check out a radically different Star Fox but I've always been of the opinion that if you have to change a series that much to make it "worthwhile", you're better off making a new thing entirely. Whatever they do with the next one, I hope it retains its arcade-y space shooter DNA.

Gasp Nintendo Japan has n64 Boxart keychains as my Nintendo rewards!?! I want them

WANT.

Also, been playing Luigi's Mansion 3 the past few days, and I've gotta say, I wish Nintendo would go back to making Professor E. Gadd a character in the rest of the Mario series instead of just restraining him to the Luigi's Mansion series. There was a period of time where E. Gadd was showing up in the Mario & Luigi games and even referenced in Sunshine! And then they just stopped doing that. C'mom, Nintendo, put E. Gadd in Mario Kart already!

Sorry for asking again:
I migrated to a new Switch from being the secondary user on my wife's Switch Lite. Now somethig seems to be off with my online status/friends list. It seems for players on my friends list I appear offline for many days (since I was last playing with the old Switch Lite), although I've been busy playing old and new games alike on the new Switch.
Has anyone an idea what is happening here?

@Emily I went through your posts. Thank you as always for the insight!

-I agree the Switch library has turned into the checklist of dreams. For me, Nintendo announcing Advance Wars told me that pretty much any IP is on the table right now.
-Hopefully we see Pikmin 4 at some point but it isn't in my radar at this point.
-Hearing about that Wave Race demo gives me nothing but pain.

Like others have said today, Switch really needs a Star Fox game

Sick on a Saturday playing video games, I looked up Malos’s voice actor.

He looks exactly how his voice matches. That never happens lol.

sniffles Thank you for this. πŸ‘

No worries! Honestly I had something similar too, have you checked your profile settings for displaying online status to friends, best friends or no one?

A lot of interesting talk here today!

Shame to hear that Pikmin 4’s status is still a total unknown to those in the know; wanted to be confident in that being a fairly imminent release (next two years) with Pikmin Bloom out there, but I guess it wasn’t meant to be.

The Wave Race tech demo was brought up to me randomly in conversation earlier this year, funnily enough. I think I cheekily mentioned it as a β€œpossibility” on Era once or twice. Based on that I didn’t expect the Star Fox tech demo to have gone anywhere, and well, yeah, doesn’t seem like it did.

The thing about Switch-Era Nintendo is it feels like they're going through a checklist of "Nintendo fan dreams".

  • Banjo, Sora, Ridley, King K. Rool and Simon Belmont in Smash Bros? Check!
  • Pokemon Snap sequel? Check!
  • Grand Theft Auto on a portable Nintendo system? Check!
  • Most of the Final Fantasy games on a portable Nintendo system? Check!
  • New 2D and New 3D Metroid? Check!
  • Advance Wars? Check! Clubhouse Games? Check!
  • Fully 3D Kirby? Check!
  • Monster Hunter? Check! Dragon Quest? Check!
  • Bioshock? Skyrim? Diablo? Crash Bandicoot? Spyro? Check! Check! Check! Check! Check!

I'm very intrigued to see how 2023-2024 plays out. When the Switch era does come to an end, I think it'll end with a bang. There's one 2023-24 game, in particular, that I can't wait to see the internet's reactions to.

When you consider both first party and third party content (including indies), Switch's software library is just insane at this point.

Definitely agree that the Switch has been checking a bunch of boxes for long-time Nintendo fans; even more obscure requests like localisations of Japan-only titles like FE1 and Famicom Detective Club. Not only that, they’ve delivered plenty on things I didn’t know I wanted too. The software lineup so far really is close to reaching Dream Come True material.

On that note, I figure that 2023-24 title is another fan request people have been asking for online for a long time. Honestly at this point F-Zero wouldn’t even shock me, seems like an inevitability for a revival despite how long it’s been; but something like Golden Sun, Mother or Nintendo Kart (ew) would sure surprise me. StarTropics would be more than a surprise; now THAT would be a miracle game.

It should be Chibi-Robo though. Naturally the reactions will be strong because everybody thought Skip was dead!

Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition is under $5 on GameStop. Of course the downside is that you have to deal with GameStop's website.

And in 2029 they add Dreamcast and the OG versions of Shenmue 1&2, along with the announcement of Shenmue 3 being ported (with a new DC graphics mode) and a partnership between Nintendo and Suzuki that funds the rest of the Shenmue series going forward.

and then I woke up and it was all a dream

While I don't think these games need such radical changes to make them "worthwhile," I don't mind different, wildly disparate takes if well considered and well executed, and I understand why these IPs might be used in these ways: a major draw is the characters or overall universes, and this is a way to explore those.

I do think these new takes are often best if there's some sort of connection to the standard gameplay, and preferably it might not entirely replace that going forward. Some sort of inherited arcadey space shooter DNA would be a connection that supports using the IP, certainly, and it retains connection between the characters and the gameplay, even if the game in question is not exactly an on-rails shooter.

But the existence of subseries such as Paper Mario is usually accepted, and Kid Icarus Uprising was widely praised. And I'm glad for the existence of those.

It's a tricky subject.
Also, been playing Luigi's Mansion 3 the past few days, and I've gotta say, I wish Nintendo would go back to making Professor E. E. Gadd is one of my go-to examples for characters that Mario Kart snubs but which really should be included. Nintendo Kart seems widely requested, but I do think there's a lot of room for the series to go deeper into the DK-Mario(D'Kario) 'verse, and it should do that instead. Between representation of subseries and spinoffs, characters and locations and items, with so much that can be worked with, this is the opportunity to highlight different parts of the D'Karioverse which would not be highlighted otherwise. E. Gadd could potentially be added even to the likes of Smash Bros., but I figure Mario Kart is more important for him.

And different subseries and spinoffs could definitely incorporate E. Gadd. Mario RPGs, for instance, could easily have segments where he makes sense. There's a creepy or haunted location? E. Gadd is there doing research.

And price has gone up to $100 a year. Nintendo fans still eat it up.
As someone who really doesn't much care for NSO, I think I might be cast out from Nintendo land.

Regarding the first part of your post, I made a reply the other day saying something just like that. The Switch era has been pretty amazing.

Strap in folks. Speculation on the 2023-2024 game begins now!
It’s Super Mario RPG 2.

Yes, I already checked, it's set to "all users". I'll try setting it to Friends and see if that triggers something.
Edit: Finally managed to actually set my Switch as primary (deactivated the old one via Nintendo site first). I hope this does the trick now.
