StarTopic Anime |ST| Is Captain Falcon more anime than Fire Emblem?

Guess I'll add it to the list, thanks! Ended up starting Lycoris Recoil first, but I'll probably check it out after I'm finished with that. I have like 9 shows to go through that I missed this year lol
Lycoris Recoil is good fun too :)

Finished Bocchi the Rock! Loved it. Can’t say 100% yet while I’m still wrapping shows up, but this was probably my favorite show this season. I wish she made a bit more progress by the end of the show, but I really liked Bocchi. She made the show stand out. I also really dug the music throughout the show and was happy to snag it on itunes. The last songs this episode were all great too. I hope we get a second season down the road, the ending was a tad unsatisfying even though I liked it, but even if not I really enjoyed what we got.

The first half of My Hero Academia Season 6 largely elevated the source material. Really impressed how it all wrapped up this week. I’ve only read a few chapters now past this so while I’ve heard the story starts falling off a cliff after this, I’m still excited to see new to me stuff next year.

Need to see Spy X Family’s last episode (25) still and then I have to catch up on a few episodes for both Gundam and Chainsaw Man to wrap this season up.

Kessoku Band (Bocchi!) released their debut album today! Snagging that up right away!

Edit: I bought it on itunes and loved it. Just learned it's also just right on Youtube too!

Belated realization that Famiboards has an anime thread, and since we're about nearing the end of the year, we should do as weebs do and geek out!

So, here, get ready for My Top 10 Anime of 2022! In no particular order:
  • The Orbital Children: If you're a fan of speculative science fiction, this will be right up your alley. Like its predecessor Dennou Coil it's a coming-of-age drama with a particular bent towards the intertwining of human existence and advanced technology, even dipping its toes into elements of transhumanism and existentialist philosophy.
  • My Dress-Up Darling: Utterly adorable love story between an outgoing gal who happens to be a hardcore otaku and a hina dollmaker who becomes more comfortable with his hobby because of her. They bring out the best in each other and that's always cute.
  • Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean: The latest and in my opinion the best bizarre adventure thus far.
  • Lycoris Recoil: What if John Wick was a peppy teenage girl with superhuman bullet-dodging reflexes
  • Isekai Ojisan: Gives the isekai formula two twists: the isekai'd person gets to return to regular Earth, and the isekai'd person is a huge weirdo whose life apparently revolves around SEGA.
  • Chainsaw Man: Surprisingly much better than the parts of the manga it adapted.
  • Summer Time Rendering: A guy learns that the death of his childhood friend is exponentially more sinister than meets the eye, and from there it's an utterly wild ride. I love that it's doesn't really play coy with the mysteries, it just keeps on revealing stuff without easing up on the tension.
  • Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun: Easily one of the most disturbing things you'll ever watch. It's very creative on that front. But it's also a stunning fantasy world that makes you want to brave its many, many dangers.
  • Bocchi The Rock: Peak deranged comedy slash rock music extravaganza slash social anxiety simulator animated by guys high on eight different types of weed.
  • Mob Psycho 100 Season 3: The beautiful realization of Mob's character development.

2023 is already looking full of bangers too. Anime really got back on track after 2020.

Well this is a shock, I guess the shipment got in a month early cause my copies of Gaogaigar and Gaiking just shipped with project A-KO 3…. To my folks place cause I thought I had a couple weeks XD. But shrug they'll be coming back and forth and I'll be down there at the end of January if not.
Has me contemplating cancelling my Virtua fighter anime order tho

The only physical stuff I’m for sure after next year is Ultimate Muscle, Demon Girl Next Door S2, and DQ Dai(provided the latter 2 get full releases

My winter list is mostly together, just gotta update some odds and ends. I should pull up all my excel lists from this year and build my top 10 tho

I’m only half way through Bocchi but I love it so far. It’s really flamboyant, over the top and funny - but it’s also got a lot of heart.

I’m rooting for her so hard! I teared up during the audition and street performance - seeing her overcome these struggles is just the emotional core of the entire show for me.

I‘ve not watched much else really.

I adored Lycoris Recoil. Sharp, stylish and funny in equal measure. Chisato is a powerhouse of a character to hang a show off, and her chemistry with Takina was always entertaining to watch.

I’m four or five episodes into the second half of Spy Family too and am having a blast with it - though I’m a bit late to the party with this one.

All of the performances in Bocchi are fantastic not only because the songs are phenomenal, but they're usually also significant character milestones for our socially awkward guitarist. Loved her "let's get serious" moment for the audition where she blows past her stage fright because she wanted their band to succeed, and I also really love how in her street performance she realizes that the audience is not her enemy.

Ugh. I already want to rewatch.

Finished off episode 10 earlier tonight - just two more to go.

I sense myself wanting more when it ends. It feels like a prologue, or perhaps more accurately, the first chapter of a much longer story. It introduces you to the main characters, their dreams, and so on. But it feels like there’s so much more to come. While I don’t know what the final episodes hold (I’ll watch them tomorrow), I hope this is just the beginning.

Loved seeing Bocchi thank the others for helping her create some summer memories. Again, it’s those really sweet moments where she breaks out of her shell, that I just love.

I’d class myself as an introvert in some ways and I think in that sense I relate to her in a way I didn’t expect… it’s certainly made me think about my own behaviour.

I’m officially in the post ‘Bocchi the Rock’ depression phase. I NEED to know what happens next.

I hope for a second season of wacky animation, laugh out loud comedy and heart. I wouldn’t say no to some romance as well. :)

I think the show got everything just about pitch perfect. I think I can easily look at the series and say I wanted more - whether that be in regards to story, characterisation, growth, etc.

But I don’t think it’s because the show is lacking those things, I think it partly feels that way because of how strong the show actually is.

You want to know what the band does next, you want to delve into the characters more, you want Bocchi to be even further along her personal journey. You’re really invested in all these things and the show does a good job juggling everything.

The show gives you enough to be satisfied, but left wanting more!

Loved it. And Happy New Year to everyone.

Bocchi has been a runaway success, I'm 100% sure that another season is in the cards.

But for now, whew, the Winter 2023 cour is coming in hard. The return of Trigun, anime originals by Gen Urobuchi and Tsutomu Nihei, Nier Automata, part 2 of the suprisingly good season 4 of DanMachi, and a whole host of other stuff like Sugar Apple Fairy Tale, Hikari no Ou, blah blah blah it's looking like a packed season.

I really hope we get a season 2! It seemed to keep bringing more people in as the weeks went on and then the album was apparently number one in Japan this week.

I still have to wrap up my last three shows for this season before I look to the next one. Should have the time this coming week.

Well here’s my prelim list for next season, glad most of its on crunchy cause I’m phone only for a while. Lots of dubs too

cachedImage.png

Now back to finishing my master has no tail

I finished watching Chainsaw Man tonight with the back five episodes. I think it was pretty good, but I don’t think I really liked the show either. Stuff I liked: the animation was often excellent particular for the character animation and most of the action, the endings were amazing, it had enough hooks to get me to the end and I did like Aki a lot. While I liked both of them sometimes, I didn’t care for Denji or Power much. The big thing though is I’m generally not a big fan of extra gory stuff which there was a lot of here. I was already invested to finish this first season, but stuff like people constantly exploding definitely wore on me. Guess I’m glad I tried it out and there were some cool moments, but yeah I don’t think I’m coming back for future seasons.

I finished Spy X Family yesterday with the last episode and wow what a good end to a great second half. Definitely looking forward to its return. I’ll try to catch up on Gundam now in time for the last episode this weekend and then I’m done with the season. Not sure I’ll do a top ten, but I’ll do a favorite 2022 anime post here afterwards when I’m all done.

Can‘t wait for Vinland Saga Season 2 starting next week.

Despite the fact, that I‘m not that much into Vikings, I really liked that one. I read the manga and everything. Especially how they will do the upcoming arc will be interesting to watch.

Magical Revolution of the reincarnated princess had an awesome kickoff. They rearranged a lot from the LN/Manga versions pacing wise but it worked well for an anime version

The second UYAS OP is a bop. Not as wild as the first but still solid

Urusei Yatsura 12
Enter the Imp known as Ten. Honestly as far as that archetype goes he’s fine? Like he’s not a perv like a lot of them tend to be in anime, it was true puppy love and he knew when to give up. Ataru is true trash as always here. Also that freakin Innuendo movie was hilarious. I love how Ten super susceptible to Ataru’s nonsense while also being a hard counter. Also yeah new OP is still super solid, the first one was just amazing. The ED was great tho even as a single image. Fun shot of the girls. Ready for Benten to get more screen time. Also both will be going on my playlist XD

Help I think I might end up with 26 shows (including leftovers) this season because I am giving a lot of series a 1 ep chance and they don't suck hard enough for me to drop.

In any case, from the non-leftovers and continuations, the ones that stand out to me are
Genius Girl, Revengers, Buddy Daddies, Sugar Apple Fairytale.

Haven't seen most of them yet though LOL.

Oh also the Legends of Heroes anime bc I like the Trails viddygames!

Genius girl has a great start, they rearranged things and adjusted the pacing that made things work better for anime.

Also I’m at like 25 but 3 of those are dubs from last season that are almost done. And over half this season has dubs. Tho I think I have one likely drop

Especially how they will do the upcoming arc will be interesting to watch.
Also curious about how anime-only watchers are going to react to (manga spoilers!) Vinland Saga: Farm Sim Mode haha. But hey I trust MAPPA knows what they're doing.

Anis is kickass. Loved the "kidnapping" scene. So far I think it had the strongest first showing for the season, but there's still some heavy hitters lying in wait.

Having a bit of that problem myself. But to be honest I've always had a problem with dropping shows. Oh well.

Farming Life 1
Pretty chill and slice of life to start, and a fun start for sure. As a manga reader I know that keeps up tho the other element that’ll show up soon does too XD
Also curious about how anime-only watchers are going to react to (manga spoilers!) Vinland Saga: Farm Sim Mode haha. But hey I trust MAPPA knows what they're doing.

Liselotte is going be my lunch watch. But neither villainess this season will reach the really wild stuff for another episode(or a couple in Anis’ case). They both mess with the setting script on the villainess side

Depending that it will be a good adaptation (and I think it will), I believe that most people will have a quite positive reaction.

For many the main complaint in season 1 probably was the (intentional) lack of character development of Thorfinn and I mean this is the main topic in Farmland Saga. What happens with him is one of the best things I‘ve ever seen in any piece of media and I see people recognizing that.

Of course it really takes a turn in a different direction, but I think that the anime already does that in the first season a bit - you never really know where it goes next. Though on the other hand I‘m really bad in predicting how people will react. The internet can get angry at anything.

Studio Orange is one studio I trust to nail the cg in animes!
They've made Houseki no Kuni and Beastars and both were really well made.

I am not familiar with the older Trigun show, but am pretty excited for the new one! It looks very stylish and the first episode was great fun!

Yep, they’re the current kings of 3DCG anime.

I am not familiar with the older Trigun show
No worries there, this new Trigun is basically a loose adaptation of the manga. Perfectly enjoyable on its own.

Also if anyone here is watching Gundam Witch from Mercury, HOLY CRAP at that season finale, right?!

Just watched it, that was crazy.

Brought back the intensity of the prologue episode with the space station getting invaded. Then Jeturk kills his Dad unknowingly which was wild. That after the credits though…going to be thinking about that one for a long while. Brutal.

Really wonder where the show goes from here.

Just watched it, that was crazy
It’s utter chaos. (GWitch spoilers) Nika’s been outed as a spy, Guel’s accidentally killed his dad, and Suletta is even deeper under Prospera’s control than we realized. That splat is outright one of the goriest moments in the Gundam franchise. Wowzers.

(GWitch spoilers) Can’t even begin to imagine how season two will go. At the very least Miorine and Suletta’s relationship is going to be incredibly strained. Miorine could even end up siding with her dad (whom she’s reconnected with) against the Gundams.

Also if anyone has watched it: should I watch the Nier anime if I’m planning to play the game?

I watched the first episode of Nier this afternoon and came away with mixed emotions. I adore the game and consider it a work of art (flawed in places, but unique and leverages the medium incredibly well).

However, having not followed the development of this, I was surprised at just how closely it followed the source material - with so many direct callbacks.

I liked the little puppet show at the end and even if the anime just retells the story of the game itself, it’s still a fine diversion. I just kind of hoped for a little more. The story of Automata is worth adapting, but that world, despite being relatively small and barren in the game, begs to be expanded upon.

I hope we see that done in some capacity.

So.. how about that Gundam Witch finale indeed..

Even if Suletta was under the control of Prospera, the fact she showed 0 remorse after splatting the guy , that might be a liiitle bit of a dealbreaker for Miorine LMAOOOOO

Definitely excited for when part two airs!

G-Witch 12
Whaaaaaaaaaaaaa…. That was wild. Guel's first real combat ending in patricide but killing it in just a grunt. Guess he really does have talent. Psycho Suletta. Just how much has Elenor programmed this poor kid. And Miorine, sheesh that's gonna be some major trauma. Least the earth crew made it out in one piece. Time for things to amp up tho I'd imagine we're not out of the school just yet. Also that upgrade for Aerial is sick. Sulleta Splatting that guy then acting all normal was straight up chilling, most disturbing part of the whole episode

Also I’ve been enjoying Guel’s arc, really curious to see where they take him, it’s pretty obvious they’ve been building him as a rival of some sort and we saw he really does have insane piloting skills this episode. Curious to see his role in the long term, been a while since we’ve had a side character with this long of a build up in Gundam with actual skill

Seems to be programming for mental suppression of certain inhibitions rather than true brainwashing… which is just as terrifying to be fair

I'd imagine we're not out of the school just yet
It’s going to be hella a lot more awkward than my high school reunion that’s for sure. Miorine met psycho Suletta, Nika outed herself as a spy, Guel just killed his dad, dang these kids should be going to therapy, not school

I mean let’s be fair Guel did more than just exist, he was actively making dumb decisions. Which seems to be a Jeturk family trait

With the next series having a new protagonist, I recently became motivated to (attempt to) watch every Pokémon episode. I wonder how long it'll take until I start to regret this decision lol.

Other than that, I've been watching one episode a day of Bocchi the Rock! after finishing Lycoris Recoil, and it might be my favorite anime of 2022 not counting continuations.

Vampire Dies in No Time S2 1
Oh man, I haven’t had that good a laugh in a while. Shows still got it. Poor Ronaldo, his guys night out was a trap, then Draluc messes with him again so his editor gets him. Ghost was genuinely spooky, but that twist was great. Handa’s pet Ciolone returns. That song at the end was great, wonder if it’s the actual Ed or not.

feel identified with the part where Ronaldo thinks the cameraman being a childhood friend wanted to go for some drinks but instead it's work for one of his projects, that has hapenned to me in the past 2 years

Anybody else seen Blood of Zeus on Netflix?

I am a sucker for Greek Mythology and having it animated by the Castlevania team is sick.

I understand the various criticisms against it but the show is just so entertaining, it made me feel like a kid reading illustrated classical myth books again.

After sitting on the Gundam finale for a few days and finally having the time to write a proper post, I’m ready to share my favorite anime from last year! I’ll do a proper top ten since it’d be fun to rank them, but a lot of them are super close together! I really dug my favorites this year!

10 Love Live Super Star Season 2 - I really enjoyed continuing Liella’s story, though I didn’t warm up to the new members too much. Still, seeing them win Love Live was awesome and the episode beyond it was very interesting in the moment with where it went even if the resolution was odd. I think this one ranks lower mainly because Love Live stopped releasing songs on US itunes which is baffling and disappointing. Sort it out Love Live!

9 Kaguya Sama Season 3 - I really liked this one! I remembered a lot of big laughs this season as the characters have become so endearing and fleshed out which made payoffs for jokes and romance alike more satisfying. The big school festival at the end was my favorite part.

8 My Hero Academia Season 6 First Half- This was a very great and welcome return to form for MHA after the weak season 5 which was so rough I decided to read the manga for a while. This would have been higher if I hadn’t read ahead because they really elevated the source material here and the big moments all landed. I would have been glued to it week to week if I didn’t know what was going to happen.

7 Magia Record Final Season - So this one just means more to me more than it was technically good. Good chunks of the final ending were straight up bad actually, but parts of the journey were so interesting and memorable with animation and imagery so wild that I still consider this one of my favorites this year. I’m disappointed this was a bad ending version of Magia Record where characters evolved into different, often worse people entirely, but others had such cool moments and I valued seeing different sides of them and having a unique journey. I’m very excited to rewatch this alongside season 2 relatively soon since I have the Blu Ray release sitting on my desk.

6 Lycoris Recoil - I will at least check out any show with a ClariS OP/ED and yay this one was good! The main characters were a lot of fun and the action and animation for it was awesome! I’m generally not a fan of police shows where they stop crime before it happens, so I was very glad to find Lycoris Recoil dodged that by having the main character not a part of the organization. I hope we get a season 2 eventually!

5 Gundam The Witch From Mercury - My biggest Gundam experiences were with Wing and Seed on Toonami so I was very excited to finally watch a Gundam as it aired with the world for once and wow I picked an awesome one! I really dug the main characters and the school setting, though the darker elements and brutal action are what definitely have me the most excited now. I can’t wait to see season 2!

4 Mob Psycho 100 Season 3 - While there were a few weaker sub arcs this time which pulled it down a bit, all the big moments, the big goodbyes, the amazing action, and especially the absolutely perfect ending, all delivered. I’m so happy Mob Psycho 100 got an amazing full adaption filled to the brim with spectacular animation and heart from everyone involved. Some of the shows above might have made a bigger more immediate impact this year, but with season 3, Mob cemented itself as one of my absolute favorite shows. I’m looking forward to rewatching this show down the road for years to come.

3 Spy X Family - I decided to give this show the edge over Mob, because it was such a wonderful part of more of the year and I loved basically every episode! I didn’t know anything walking in, so I was really won over by the awesome premise and characters. There’s also lots of singular moments I’ll treasure like the goofy dodgeball episode and plenty of the awesome action with Loid and Yor.

2 Pop Team Epic Season 2 - I liked the first season of Pop Team Epic, but it wasn’t until the April Fools day episode that I adored it and season 2 maintained that amazing, creative energy and quality. You never knew what you were in for with Pop Team Epic, but I was always entertained with the segments both large and small. There were a lot of stand out segments this time like Chocobo, Biggus McHuge Guy, Shining Shoulder, Train Battle, The Dating Sim, and the live action finale, but my absolute favorite was of course the glorious return of Hellshake Yano! Also I have to mention the OP and ED are awesome with the latter being my favorite of the year.

1 Bocchi The Rock! - I could reorder this list a number of ways depending on the day, but I think nearly every time I’d put Bocchi on top. I just really adored Bocchi, the main character, right from the start, the ever shifting and wild animation, the great humor, and of course the awesome songs. I was a little let down with the ending at first, but I now consider the true ending of the show to be the release of Kessoku Band’s first album which I love from start to finish. I think it has a good shot, but I’m praying hard all the same we get a season 2 for Bocchi. I really want to see her journey continue.

my favorite anime from last year!
Very good taste. Happy to see another Love Live fan here! Liella really grew on me, they're contending with Aquors for my favorite LL group.

Kaguya-sama is absolutely one of the best romcoms to come out. Miyuki and Kaguya are so damn cute together.

Lycoris Recoil
Chisato was the peppy anime girl version of John Wick and I loved it.

Gundam The Witch From Mercury
Really glad to see how many people tuned in for Witch from Mercury. The producers specifically stated they wanted to broaden the appeal of the Gundam franchise and I think they've succeeded. The S1 finale was crazy!

Mob Psycho 100 Season 3
Agreed with some of the sub-arcs feeling slow. In a lot of ways this felt like a wrap-up season, but that final arc was absolutely amazing and culminates in the completion of Mob's character development. Truly one of the anime greats.

Spy X Family
Felt I would see this after seeing the rest of your list hahaha. Spy X Family is definitely one of the hottest Shonen Jump properties right now.

Bocchi The Rock!
Hail to the queen!

Thanks! I definitely wanted to do one again this year especially after reading yours at the top of the page :)

I think Aqours is still my favorite Love Live group as I’ve seen them in person live three times, but Liella is really awesome too and I like their songs a lot! I’m excited for their journey to continue in season 3! I read they are getting at least one more new member so I’m curious what the full group will look like at the end.

I bow down to you, superior Love Live fan

Wouldn't this be whatsherface the girl that wanted to get into that academy in Vienna?
I feel like that’s a possibility too, but yeah after season 2 I read a news article there was auditions being held for an all new character. So maybe 11 members total?

I’ve been meaning to get around to it.

Netflix just screws with my viewing habits so bad because they drop the entire season in your lap. Need to find the time to fit it all in haha.
True, I've been sleeping past 3 am cause I finished the entirety of Blood of Zeus and Cyberpunk Edgerunners.

Re: the latter, I've been ignoring it cause of CDPR's shenanigans surrounding the game. But the show doesn't have any of those transphobic elements (and I still have no interest in playing the game), and it's ... a great show. Even I'm surprised by how invested I got, as I generally have little interest in cyberpunk fiction.

I started Chainsaw Man tonight. I had no idea what it was, what it was really about or what to expect, but four episodes down, I’m enjoying it quite a lot.

Such a strange, mysterious, eclectic mix of characters. The fighting is cool, but seeing the cast interact is my favourite part.

Makima feels really dangerous. Love the mystery.

I started Chainsaw Man tonight.
Enjoy! Gonna avoid commenting so that I’m sure I’m not spoiling anything.

Winter 2023 season has barely started but man, there’s a bunch of decent to great fantasy anime already. As a sucker for speculative fiction, I am mightily pleased.

LOL at the end of the puppet show of Nier Automata where this time they receive a fan letter with questions.... from Yoko Taro.

Overall it's been a decent adaptation

Sat here waiting for the final dubbed episode of Chainsaw Man…

To follow-up from my post above, the night after I watched four episodes, I watched five! Then today I polished off episode 10 and 11.

This is the fastest I’ve ever watched an anime, as I typically struggle to string more than a couple of episodes together.

It’s just a real page-turner. It always ends when I want more.

It’s captivated me throughout, otherwise I wouldn’t have binged it - but from the erotic scene in episode five to the end of nine, it felt particularly breathless.

The world, the characters and the action are all just really absorbing.

Makima excites me and terrifies me in equal measure whenever she’s on screen, which I just absolutely adore. I know I called her dangerous before, but it really feels like the best way to describe her.

The fusion of over-the-top graphic violence, alongside suggestive sexual playfulness is a winning mixture for me.

I’m watching this fresh off Bocchi and they’re both brilliant in totally different ways.

It’s great that these appeared in the same period and both have a strong claim for awards, despite being nothing alike. It shows the strength of the medium.
