Here's the thing though, didn't 3H preview/prerelease information low key confirmed romances at that point?
I don't think so? Nor am I sure how they could have considering 3H romance stuff doesn't happen until basically end game. The only FE games to have actual romance mechanics before end game were Genealogy, Awakening, and Fates, and all 3 of them had child units.

I mean, we get an engagement ring in the early chapters of 3H...

It's a safe bet romances are in the game, but to what extent is really the question. Like are S-ranks an endgame-only aspect specific to Alear or can pairings beyond any involving Alear S-rank, do they impart any specific gameplay aspect (since child units are not in Engage), and obviously, who is compatible with who?

Which doesn't come into play until literally the end of the game, which is a far cry from the romance aspect of Awakening and Fates where characters were marrying left and right by the mid-game.

It looks so good and feels like it really takes advantage of Switch’s capabilities (or lack thereof) unlike the very underwhelming Three Houses.

Come on man, we both know that videogame reviewers will have difficulty beating the game in normal casual mode.
Actually what you proposed was what killed the reception of radiant dawn, because the normal mode was called easy mode the reviewers played normal (aka hard mode) and complained that the game was extremely hard and unwelcoming.
Also I think that most lunatic/maddening mode are so unbalanced that they should be seen as an extreme mode and not just an hard mode.
I mean the Gameinformer preview writer's first and only FE is 3H, and yet they write in their preview that Engage is lacking in difficulty. This is Three Houses deceptive difficulty naming all over again.

Yeah, the difficulty renaming in the west kinda fucked Radiant Dawn, but this is basically the same problem, just in the opposite direction. Ideally, Intelligent Systems just implements 3 difficulties named easy -> normal -> hard and properly balance them so they actually fit their naming. Stop with the meme-y maddening difficulty and include a hard mode that actually feels player-tested.

Honestly, the reason why this is an issue to me is because I know quite a few people who were just slightly competent at SRPGs (but no experts), chose normal mode in 3H, waltzed through half the campaign and then stopped playing because the game was too easy to be fun & they didn't felt to restart the game in hard-mode because they were too far.

Looks like the social elements are taking a back seat in this one, which should be a nice breath of fresh air after Three Houses.

I really enjoyed Garreg Mach and training up your students, but it got very tedious on repeat playthroughs.

Sounds like this game is pretty great. I was actually hoping that the side stuff was toned down a bit...I was hoping for more of a combat-focused game this time. I guess we'll see how much of that can be automated or skipped.
Sounds like there’s a lot of automation you can do with both equipment and even the rings themselves.

God this game looks so freaking good. As someone who loves Three Houses I’m glad this game is returning to a more traditional structure with one route, while still keeping all of the side activities.
The halberdier class is back, I take back everything this game is a 10/10 masterpiece

Hero isn’t genderlocked again. Thank god. That was a really stupid decision in Three Houses.

That's really just more of an issue of the difficulty balancing. Three Houses was done by Koei Tecmo and the maps and gameplay were very different from a design and balance perspective. The elements that defined Three Houses challenge or lack thereof won't necessarily be what defines Engage.

I mean again, the GI writer being a newbie and still lamenting about the lack of difficulty is not a good sign, but I guess we'll have to see.

I hope some shops break street day soon and we get spoilers, I have to see more on the late game...

Just watched one preview and I have to say the game looks nice. Are the character designs a little meh? Sure. I just don't care lol.

The ring system kinda makes me weery of it making the game too easy. I may play a harder difficulty so that it incentivizes me to really get into it though because I know I'll want to. The game is literally asking me to collect all these rings and level it up. My OCD cannot resist that lmfao.

Previews look really good, gameplay and artstyle looks way better than three houses. That said I still feel like the story/characters are gonna be meh though.

I mean, all normal difficulties in fire emblem are pretty easy, that's why they have harder difficulties; also difficulty is always subjective, what can be easy to some can be hard to other so I would not look so much into it.

Yeah. For some, what might be too easy could be a decent challenge for others. Isolated preview opinions shouldn't be taken as an indication of the game's overall challenge.

And I was pleased to have a month of nothing before February hits.. and these previews.. kind of makes me want to buy my first FE game. Glowing stuff

I can't believe I went from cautious/slightly disappointed to ecstatic and hyped for this game!

Seriously jelly of the people who can play this on an OLED screen!

Eventhough FE3H was/is my favorite game, with it's more serious tone and relatively muted colors, I don't mind having a game that goes crazy with colors this time! It's giving me big Awakening/Fates vibes!

I’ve never played a Fire Emblem, is this expected to be a good one for newbies or should I seek out Three Houses?
Hard to know just on previews, this one so far seems to be a bit more traditional than Three Houses, so it may be more representative of the rest of the series (though Three Houses isn't a major departure).

Totally hyped for this game. Though the social interactions and character motivations are a big part of what made Three Houses so special and deep, it gets tiresome along the game and in subsequent playthroughs. I'm totally in for a more battle-focused game

Rosado is confirmed to be male, or at the very least uses he/him pronouns.

English dub has been mixed for me, based on what I’ve seen. I really like the voice actors quite a bit, but the dialogue and writing looks pretty weak, honestly. Feels really stilted, and definitely a step back from Three Houses.

There’s also an obscene amount of anime grunting, but maybe that’s just in the couple clips I’ve seen rather than across the entire game.

Just saw in a preview that you can adopt a random pigeon after a battle from the map and I love it lololol can't wait to adopt all the animals possible

I think it's always best to start with the latest game in a series if you're, don't think too much about it and play it if it looks like a game you would, you can always get back to earlier titles later if you become a fan but this way you play the game at it's peak when everyone else is playing it.

Engage seems to be fairly different from Three Houses, so ultimately you’re gonna want both if you want to get into Fire Emblem. Under that pretense, Three Houses is probably the cheaper option at the moment, it has DLC already released, and it opens the door to potentially play Three Hopes as well if you want. I’d start there, and then come back to Engage once you’ve had your fill.

Feels like a common refrain from the previews I've read.

It really is Fates 2.

Game looks beautiful and the production values are immense. That said, I’m very sad they’ve got rid of battalions as the sense of scale feels timid by comparison with Three Houses, and it’s hard to take the story of a “save the world” strategy game seriously in which battles are 8 vs 12–30.

Jup! Those animals are around to adopt and be put in Somniel.

Another tidbit that you can see in our preview (sorry it is in Dutch) is that based on which ring you give to a character they have slight changes in their looks. E.g. Vandor gets pink hair when he uses the Celica Emblem.

The opening song is straight from a Sonic game

The person got it sadly from our preview without putting a thank you :(

One thing I'm hoping for is differing end conditions. Give me some defend for x turns or defeat x amount of enemy fighters. Routing the enemy is not fun when it is practically every single mission.

I'm hoping you unlock the ability to turn into an actual dragon at some point beyond an endgame cutscene. They can't keep calling Alear the Divine Dragon without cashing in that check.

I'm also hoping we get some token beast units like in Awakening and Fates.

All the "Fates 2" comments are nonsense. Fates problem was that the game had 3 radically different narratives that it's single cast of characters all had to fit into, and two of those narratives were awful (conquest and revelations). Fates would have been a way better game if it's plot was generic "heroes from across the world unite to beat evil dragon/emperor" without the split family drama.

I don't know about beast units, but the Tiki Emblem DLC lets the wearer turn into a dragon even if they aren't a manakete. I would be shocked if Alear never uses a dragon form.

Holy shit this is awesome. Vandar looks glorious in pink. I wonder if this also works with non-MC rings. I want Joshua's beret.
