I’ll probably cut down on gaming purchases the next few years. I’m only interested in the big games right now. For me the direct is really about Zelda and Metroid.

lets say next Animal Crossing started full development after New Horizons expansion got released, that means late 2021.

New Horizons full development lasted +3 years (late 2016 to early 2020). I’m sure they can have something ready to late 2025/early 2026, that would be +4 years of full development.

They can repeat the Gen 10 Pokémon + New AC combo with new HW (like it was with Switch, Gen 8 Pokémon late 2019 -> AC NH early 2020).

Voted for February to try and force Nintendo into proving me wrong.
Late to the Animal Crossing discussion but I'm doubtful we'll ever see spin-offs again considering the only reason they were made during the 3DS & Wii U era was because they wanted to make amiibo for the series and needed a game to sell them alongside - literally from Aya Kyogoku herself:

As we know, in 2015 a new Animal Crossing game was not in active development (and neither was the Welcome amiibo update for New Leaf). Concepts for New Horizons were established as early as 2012 after New Leaf was released in Japan, but active development only began around late 2016 or perhaps even later

imo the only potential for a spin-off game is the Happy Home Designer series and we already got that within New Horizons as expansion content. there's no doubt the Animal Crossing team is working on the next game already. considering how receptive they are with listening to fan feedback and criticism, and how much of a controversy New Horizons caused, I'm sure they're probably eager for the series to return to form - we already saw hints of that within the 2.0 update

EPD5 are easily Nintendo's most consistent developers, they've been releasing new games, expansions, and update content at a pace unheard of from Nintendo's other first parties. now that Splatoon 3 has been released, at this point the next Animal Crossing game is very likely only 2-3 years away
I'm not sure a single quote from seven years ago is all that relevant in where the series goes following the enormous success of New Horizons, even if it is a very interesting factoid. For what it's worth, I don't think a spin-off would be purely from EPD 5 anyway - at the very least, I'd expect it to be co-developed by NdCube, or perhaps solely developed at NdCube. If we do assume the next mainline title is 2 to 3 years away, that's 2025/26 we're talking about, meaning 4 to 5 years after the last Animal Crossing content launched. I don't see Nintendo leaving the series untouched for that long.

What kind of stuff did Grubb say in his stream last night? I wouldn't mind if TotK is the OG switch's last hurrah, since that would hopefully mean we aren't TOO far off from the new hardware. Hopefully. Did he mention anything about Prime?

I honestly can't ever see them wanting to do anything Animal Crossing related with NdCube ever again considering amiibo Festival was their biggest blunder in recent memory lol. not only that but every Animal Crossing spin-off has been plagued with controversy and it's not something I can see Nintendo wanting to fuel even further with how jaded New Horizons has made core fans of the series

good point, this can only mean one thing - new animal crossing game in 2023 LET'S GOOOOOOO !!

but nah real talk I think a remaster of an older title like New Leaf of Population Growing in place of a spin-off title is the more likely scenario. perhaps it's pure copium but I just cannot envision the series returning to spin-off games and I feel the potential for them is already running dry

The Tweeting Hour approaches!

How did y'all manage to inspire hope in me today for an announcement in 2 minutes (or is it an hour and 2 minutes)? After Jan 20th makes so much sense, and yet...

Am I missing something? Why would something be announced 9am on Wednesday. Also, why would Nintendo have a direct with FE Engage weeks away, diverting all attention away from it? January or even early February seem silly timeframes. Why release FE to immediately say "and here's an even bigger, better game coming soon!"

This is normal announcement time. I agree on the Fire Emblem point, though they're not afraid to announce things shortly after a release

I mean, they release games every month, so they'll either do a direct before a release or after it, and it's usually better to do a direct after a release hype so they can remind people of the game but not steal his thunder before launch.

I don't expect direct before FE Engage, but direct just after a big release is very commun. The last direct was one week after Splatoon 3,

I'm still Team February FYI, but yeah, if Nintendo wanted they could totally do a Direct just a few days after FE releases. They've done it before.

Because it would be fun

Not remotely unusual for Nintendo to do a Direct in the aftermath of their latest release; in fact, that's often been the case, especially in recent years. Last year's September Direct was just after Splatoon 3; June's Partner showcase just after Three Hopes; February's Direct 2 weeks after Legends Arceus. September 2021 Direct was 2 weeks after WarioWare; February 2021 Direct was just after 3D World.

Early February puts us 2 weeks after FE Engage, and in prime Direct territory.

While these are good points I might argue that September 2022 after Splatoon 3 was just a only spot they could do it before TGS begun. The same for September Direct 2021 which was probably so late in the month becase TGS was very late that September. But yeah, I agree. If anything it's going to be the last week of January or the first week of February.

Sure, TGS timing seems to be pretty important for deciding on Direct timing.

The other factor to think through is that, if Nintendo decide both the week of and the week after software releases are off the cards for Directs, they're really cutting down their own options for when they get marketing presentations out.

Could be a twitter drop announcement Metroid Prime HD remaster - I recall Emily said Nintendo could easily do this and/or put it in a Direct so let's see

I’ll trust your insight here and expect to wake up to nothing tomorrow then.

Pinning my hopes on Week 2 which I still feel good about.
If I learned one thing about Direct Speculation ever since the first thread in 2019 it's that General Directs are always announced at 23:00 JST, and it's the simpliest time to catch up to since Japan has no time change throught the year. People often talk about how Nintendo "breaks the patterns" which is somewhat true but this specific time for General Directs will always stay the same, at least for now. They changed the time between announcement and actual airing from about 32 hours to 24 hours throught the Switch era but the actual announcement time - 23:00 JST always stays the same.

The most safe prediction that we can make is:

  • New trailer for FE Engage coming this week (or next one)
  • New Kirby trailer in january;
  • Nintendo Direct before the end of second week of february
  • Pokémon Presents on february 26th

What's it like to be a sicko?

don't worry I'm a sicko too, bring on Fire Emblem!
I enjoy seeing Smash fans lose their mind over Fire emblem. Even the Era smash threads were pretty salty, especially a few members who seen as “respectable” in their critiques couldn’t hide their anger. Rather laughable and hypocritical stuff in those threads about this one series.

If I had my way we would have even more Fire Emblem in Smash lol.

I would put 1,000 hours in a remaster of the GameCube Animal Crossing game, and I know if Raccoon were here he'd say the same. Every month Tom Nook held a lottery and the prizes were shit and you still felt great for stuffing your basement full of tickets.

That'd be a challenge. The game only has 5 minutes of content a day

Just to give people an idea of potential Post-Zelda Nintendo projects:

  • Advance Wars 1&2 Reboot Camp (confirmed, TBC)
  • Pikmin 4 (confirmed, 2023)
  • Metroid Prime 4 (confirmed, TBC)
  • Detective Pikachu (confirmed, TBC)
  • EPD 8 3D action game (hiring call, October 2019)
  • EPD 10 2D action game (hiring call, October 2019)
  • EPD 8 2D action game (hiring call, August 2020)
  • Nintendo x Bandai-Namco 3D action game remaster (hiring calls in 2022/23)
  • SynSophia fashion game (hiring call, December 2020)
  • Grezzo medieval fantasy game (hiring call, 2021; trademark 'Jet Dragon' registered in 2022)
  • Finished but unannounced Retro Studios game (LinkedIn, September 2021; heavily rumoured to be Metroid Prime remastered)

Before we even get into the realm of speculation, rumours and guesswork, you can run up 11 titles all potentially heading to Switch and/or its successor. Throw on the recent F ZERO rumours or the older rumours of a Fire Emblem remake in the works to launch after the latest new titles, as well as some guesswork - that studios like NdCube are perhaps due to launch new software on Switch; that Good-Feel probably have Nintendo-contracted software as well as their own self-published game in the works for Switch; that perhaps Monolith Soft have been working on an action game after all; that NST now have an unusually high number of game designers and might be working on their own project; and so on.

Entirely possible some of these aren't for Switch, and very likely a number of these won't launch exclusively for Switch and are instead going to end up being cross-generation; but I don't really see the pace of releases on Switch slowing, even if we end up with more re-releases and spin-offs than 2022.
I’ve been meaning to ask, how do we know that the Kyoto 2D game is EPD 10? Is that just an assumption given that they’re the only internal group that’s done a 2D action game recently?

They also had a recruitment ad for a 2d action game like epd Tokyo

I would love to not have to wait such a long time for an AC game but I don't think that teams next game is AC unfortunately. Not only do I think they are working on some crappy spinoff but they may be on something else.

Really this is mostly my pessimism and with a side of watching how certain Nintendo dev teams seem to operate.
