I’m kind of happy they didn’t show Zelda in that the more of this game is a surprise the better I think it will be for us. It’s going to be so heavily scrutinized from every angle (positive and negative) upon release especially since it reuses the map which covers an unknown extent of the overall experience. Also another thought - Nintendo's TGA focus in terms of announcements was promotion for two of their Q1 titles and their movie, out in April. Even with Zelda in May, and Pikmin 4 finally coming, the rest of 2023 is something of a mystery.
On the one hand, a large part of my brain accepts that this is completely normal. By late February, we'll have likely had marketing presentations for Pokemon, perhaps Fire Emblem, and a general Direct, allowing Nintendo to fill in the blanks. Q1 is well and truly sorted, with 3 exclusives plus Octopath Traveler 2 as a notable release.
On the other hand, Nintendo's hesitancy to meaningfully promote Zelda or divulge more information about it is really interesting. We're 5 months from release, for a game that's been public for three and a half years, and we know next to nothing. Sure, the context is different versus Breath of the Wild, but I can't help but be suspicious the closer we get to release without any real information. Honestly, I can't think of any other Zelda title shrouded in this much mystery prior to release. There were a lot of unknowns about Breath of the Wild, but we'd seen the entire prologue of the game at gaming's highest profile event 9 months before release.
I don't think a delay is on the cards, given the game is content complete (thanks, game ratings agencies!). I am, however, increasingly suspicious.
We had a great TGA and Nintendo is going to make 2023 even better than 2022.Okay I am gonna consciously refocus myself on the positives here; Nintendo reaffirmed the 12th of May date for TOTK, and since that's only 5 months out, reiterating such a specific date makes it less likely we'll see a further delay, meaning in just over 5 months' time we'll likely have the sequel to one of the best games ever made.

Yeah, I do think - regardless of hardware or a general Direct - the odds on Tears of the Kingdom getting its own dedicated Direct before release are actually pretty high. The release in mid-May and a lack of first-party releases (so far) in April gives them a good opportunity to get some news out then. I know there's the Mario movie to think and talk about in April, but reviews etc for that will presumably be out end of March/early April; a Zelda event a week or two after the film and 3 to 4 weeks before TotK launches would work.I’m kind of happy they didn’t show Zelda in that the more of this game is a surprise the better I think it will be for us. How much is the same, how much is remixed, and how much is new? I think the last trailer was too much of a tease and didn’t move the needle at all. With the release date approaching I think we are expecting something more substantial for the next showing.
If I was them, I’d have a dedicated Direct for it and that’s it. Announce it ahead of time and away from whatever other presentations may be planned. Or don’t show it at all until as close to release as possible and drive everyone crazy wondering about it.
Definitely other possibilities out there though. It could end a typical January/February Direct or be tied to new hardware. Moment the year rolls over, hype, hopes, and dreams will start exponentially building again that’s for certain.
Well
neither of us won a Steam Deck
my condolences, palsAh piss, no deck.
I got a Steam Deck.my condolences, pals
I wonder if this helps them ports/develop for switch and be true multiplat
As someone getting back into gaming...Yeah, there’s definitely too many games.
As someone getting back into gaming...
Honestly? There are literally too many and it's... even a bit hard to choose as a result.
It helps me to juggle a handful of games so I don't get bored but you can't really do that with every game. But I've given up on the idea of playing everything I'm interested in a long time ago.As someone getting back into gaming...

Like, you could hypothetically just look up a game that you want (maybe type in the genre or premise) and you may just get what you're looking for.
I also think that the quality has gone up, despite what people say about gaming "being better" back then, which I disagree with, tbh.
Fire Emblem EngageWhen did toothpaste companies start making games??
Frankly, that's been the hardest part of getting back into video games: accepting that I won't be able to play everything. It helps me to juggle a handful of games so I don't get bored but you can't really do that with every game. The "SOON..." Cheep-Cheep!
What if I own both thoughHades is on sale for $12.49, and Celeste in on sale for $4.99. Both on the eShop. Just sayin.

I've only played the demo for the first Armored Core game, but man alive watching the reactions from all the From Software fans who jumped on with the Souls games checking out AC is going to be wildArmored Core having the lead designer of Sekiro as director has my immediate attention. I need to see gameplay though.
Don't do this to yourself. We just did this with Splatoon 3.
We'll get deets two weeks after Engage is out.
First week of February.
Mark your calendars.
Yep that's the date of the Drake reveal.

And miss the Drake reveal? Madness.I'd trade a Jan/Feb/March Zelda story trailer for a timeskip to early May 2023 tbh.
Yeah, I wonder how "Souls-y" they're gonna make it. At least one From-fandom is gonna be disappointed in it, maybe both!I've only played the demo for the first Armored Core game, but man alive watching the reactions from all the From Software fans who jumped on with the Souls games checking out AC is going to be wild

Switch games won Best Multiplayer Game and Best Action Game, which kinda blows my mind.Btw. am i the only one being surprised that a Switch game won best multiplayer? I mean, criticism of Nintendo's online stuff isn't ... let's say uncommon. ^^
I still remember watching the January 2017 presentation on a cruise and the awful wifi* impeding my ability to preorder right away. The more important thing not to miss is the Drake preorders opening!

Just to be clear, my suspicion is: "maybe something else is coming with the game, like hardware" and "there's probably really cool stuff they're not showing" not "this game has nothing new to it and Nintendo are hiding it from view".They're just giving Fire Emblem room to breathe

I still think they shoulda also won Best RPG but..

Good thing people were a bit cold on it then, I managed to preorder it within a few hours.
*Well aware that this is an extremely first world problem
I also think they can have a smaller promotional period for TotK because there's a lot less they need to explain. BotW upended the Zelda template that had been in use for nearly two decades, and that requires some education of potential buyers. TotK is expected to retain that formula so there's not as many essentials they need to talk about. They're just giving Fire Emblem room to breathe

Sorry for the doublepost, this stupid thing popped into my head and I thought it deserved to stand out
I shoulda been more clear that I was just leaning into the "give niche (but actually popular) game room to breathe" joke from the Animal Crossing days.Just to be clear, my suspicion is: "maybe something else is coming with the game, like hardware" and "there's probably really cool stuff they're not showing" not "this game has nothing new to it and Nintendo are hiding it from view".
I thought I was pretty clear I expect news about 2023 as a whole in February, which is normal.
It is true that Nintendo have waited so long to release Fire Emblem Engage for fear of overshadowing Animal Crossing; this necessitated delays for Zelda, which would overshadow Fire Emblem. The next 3D Mario will only be announced and advertised when Tears of the Kingdom stops selling.I shoulda been more clear that I was just leaning into the "give niche (but actually popular) game room to breathe" joke from the Animal Crossing days.
I actually share your suspicion.
Why wouldn’t we be talking about a piece of hardware that’s getting announced in like a monthOh, do i see right, are we Drake-ing in here right now?
no but it’s real this time!!!!! It’s real!!!!You guys have thought the next Switch was releasing imminently for the past two years lol.
Some Nintendo exec at a shareholder meeting I'm butchering the quote: "We're always looking at new hardware".You guys have thought the next Switch was releasing imminently for the past two years lol.

I've been Drake-ing since before famiboards existedOh, do i see right, are we Drake-ing in here right now?
From what's been said a lot in the hardware thread, what has leaked shows a product so far along in development that for it to not come to market at this point would be very, very expensive and unusual.(I seriously do think a lot of what leaked is just R&D stuff and may not be indicative of a product that makes it to market)
oh noEvery time someone expressed doubt in the Switch Pro, it's moved back.
you monsteroh no
sorry folks, it's my fault that the Switch Pro still isn't out
This isn't remotely true though. We thought it was happening in 2021 because Bloomberg reported it was happening in 2021.You guys have thought the next Switch was releasing imminently for the past two years lol.
