Yeah like I said earlier, he seems like a really nice guy. Click here for exclusive evidence [only for Famiboards eyes]!

This is the hill you’re looking to die on?
I gave up to tell people how problematic Pratt is as a person.. just yesterday I criticized him in a Discord server and people already jumped in to tell me that "all accusations are false";

Heck, back when the casting was announced, I made a thread on era thinking I'd get some support on the backlash, and most assumed I was talking about his hypothetical performance (which, no surprise, is also underwhelming).. It's such a shame that Mario will now be associated with him as this will become a Movie Franchise.. but that's Hollywood for you..

Iunno, it is undeniable that Chris is a conservative type but I still don't think it's fair to peg him down as racist and homophobic and what not that the people in Twitter seem to have decided he is. My father is severely conservative and watches Brazil's top "Fox News Wannabe" channel all the time, against his better judgement IMO is voting Bolsonaro in the next election, and yet he is still someone I look up to as a kind and fair person and I have never seen him hold any opinion more extreme than standard right wing boomer "government programs are communism and all murderers should get the death penalty!!" stuff.
Fully understand and support anyone that decides to boycott this film under the assumption Chris is one of those extreme types based on their gut feeling, but my personal experience in that matter leads me to hesitate on making a call on the guy's moral fiber, regardless of his Twitter follower list.

I originally had NO interest in this movie when it was first announced. Wasn't even on my radar at all. The poster was the beginning of that turning completely around for me. I was shocked at just how good and full of life and colorful the poster was and really how much it made me want to explore THAT world with that scope in size and visuals. Maybe in 20 years lol.

As a fan of Mario since the NES days, Nintendo has been a HUGE part of my entire life and Mario lore and evolution of the characters and worlds is something that's been fun to watch evolve over time and this movie teaser is basically everything I could ever want from a Mario movie. Like for me personally it's a perfect culmination of what "Mario" is for me. This is now my most anticipated movie in years which is hilarious but hey. It looks THAT good and fun to me.

I really hope that we do get that Switch 2 soon and that we can at least get a Mario game with better visuals and scope then we have previously gotten. I enjoyed Super Mario Odyssey a lot but man this movie teaser really has me dreaming for something even better! :)

As someone who loves Kamek and feels he has often been, like... ignored, despite being a pretty big figure in the Mario universe, it is super cool to have him being the first (proper) character shown and talking, in the first animated Mario Movie.
Good for you, Kamek. I can already tell you will be as OP as a Pokémon using Psychic in the anime, haha
Kamek was pretty prominent in the Yoshi's Island games.

This description of your father doesn't really imbue me with sympathy towards him if I'm honest. Regardless, it's basically impossible, at least in America (I would say most countries too, but Pratt is an American, so I'm focusing on that) to support right-wing platforms/politicians and not be racist and homophobic.

You could argue though that this cuts to a closer truth, that Chris Pratts in America are a dime a dozen, that there are millions of white guys with crappy looking beards who go to church and support right-wing causes that further the socioeconomic divide in this country. I'm sure many of them are nice people in their personal lives too. People are a bundle of contradictions, very few right-wingers eat puppies and burn down orphanages in their day to day lives.

That said, it's pretty much undeniable that both in America and globally, the right-wing is veering more and more right and constantly supporting movements that aim to destabilize democracy and inflame bigotry. So, sure, on paper, Pratt is pretty much bog standard Republican type from the outside in. Is he an "extremist?" Probably not, though he should probably hire new PR people to make sure he's not being seen in a 3% hat, but irrespective of a cartoon movie about an Italian plumber that stomps on... KOOPAS... there is no avoiding that the lines between "respectable" conservatism and extremist right-winger ideals are blurring. As a Brazilian, you obviously know this very well. So ultimately people will feel how they want about that.

Kamek was pretty prominent in the Yoshi's Island games.
Yeah, being his biggest roles, of course. Even then tho, he usually feels not super important. Like, he kidnaps Mario and Co, and pesters Yoshi and junk, but it is always Bowser being THE big bad. And outside of the Yoshi's Island games, it is usually hard to tell if it is Kamek or just 'a bunch of Magikoopas'.
So him being here as THE Kamek with a prominent role is just fun to see c:

Oh I love Kamek too. Despite being sad about Kammy Koopa being gone I really love what Origami King did with Kamek instead. They made me appreciate him a lot more.

ugh, I need to go back and play Origami King. I played a big chunk of it then I forget, I got busy with something else, and now I lack the motivation to go back.
I admit I have not played a lot featuring Kammy, haha.
Also, I noticed Kamek has a clear Shell under his robe in the movie trailer. Which makes sense since he is a Koopa but I always figured he was one of the Shell-less Koopas XD

I love the attention to detail in this movie, its awesome to see these characters with so many little details and textures on them. Like in the games, never realized that kamek was supposed to have a shell under his robes, but its a neat detail here in the film

I still stand by that Kamek was never 'suppose' to have a shell, and would just be a naked Koopa, like when you stomp on one in Mario World. But shell works, too, and it does give him a neat humpback-look.
Really, all the characters just looks very nice so far. Koopas, too.
Damn, tho, Kamek's wand and glasses are shiiiny

Agreed on many fronts, specially on "people will feel how they want about that", like I said, I fully back anyone that plans on boycotting this film, I even back the guy who said in Era that he hopes this bombs (though I doubt this film is even physically capable of bombing considering Illumination is a master of being cheap. I don't think they've ever spent more than 90 million on a project, and I'm high balling)

Yeah, there is no indication of a shell on any of his previous appearances, so if this really is a shell and not just a cartoony hunchback then it'll be an idea original to this film. Either way, he is a character I've always liked so it is very nice to see him in a high-ticket movie with a perfect voice actor cast for him. He really does sound like how I always imagined him in my brain.

I don't think that was ever a thing in the games, in fact

At least I don't see it's as visible under his robe, and I take it was creativity liberty in the movie.

Hmm, some in my family for sure are republican, but defintely not racist or homophobic and well, and we are definately not anglos. Now if you said "far right" leanings, I would probably agree with you. The unfortunate reality, is on many political parties, many people are single or double issue voters. Some in my family of course vote republican due to the trauma caused of what happened in Venezuela, which while I find irrational (only because we have also had dictatorships that swung the other direction into the hard right, but they are a few generations removed from that - only my great grandparents would remember that), I can understand them, even if irrational. But then again, most fears are irrational and trauma is not a simple switch you can flip off. Of course Pratt is fully American, so that is different.

As for Pratt, everybody can make their own mind and will not hold it against them. People's feelings are valid.

Do I think he is far right? Not at all. To many people who know him personally - especially left leaners - vouch that is not the case. Pratt has even said neither party represents him. Hell, he is married to liberal. What is Pratt? My educated guess is he is a libertarian. My second educated guess, is that he is a non voter. I will bet anything on the last two points. My third educated guess? He is not politically smart at all or media literate, and he will hear one talking point and say "yeah, that makes sense" but not actually look deeper on what either said talking point means OR the context of said talking point.

Now libertarian does not mean racist, homophobic, etc. It can, sure, but that is not a libertarian and when I see people describe themselves as such and use far right talking points, it makes me want to slap them.

Disclosure. I was a libertarian. For a good while. Now I vote strictly democratic because ideologically I swing progressive on way too many issues. But, in theory, being a libertarian is sound. The problem is - it just does not work in this country. Impossible. In order for it to work, the institutions would have to not stacked against minority groups, the poor, the working class, the middle class, faiths other than Christianity, LGTBQ, etc. The reality is that the system is heavily stacked towards everyone that not wealthy and then who is not anglo white and male. So yeah, libertaranism will never work for those reasons. Everything would have to be equal and fair, which it is not.

I wish that Kamek had something that visually separated him from the other regular Magikoopas, like you don't have to Kammie Koopa him and give him a new wardrobe but something that signaled this is Kamek and not just some random magikoopa enemy.

Very much agreed. I guess it's the same problem as with Toad. There is a THE Toad. But... it is sometimes hard to know who that is, haha.
And also that drawing of Movie Kamek with a hump is... cursed

For a while, Kamek was the only Magikoopa seen flying in a broom iirc, until Smash Run on Smash4 3DS, where Magikoopas were regular enemies and they all used a flying broom (and even then, that's asset recycling of Smash4 on Wii U when THE Kamek is seen in the Mushroom Kingdom U stage);

Previously, they also had generic Magikoopas with no white edges on their hats

And if it helps, he's often referred to having a shell in the games, too.

Oh, that's definitely new to me; so my bad!

I don't want to open up the Paper Mario can of worms, but all I will say is that in the first 2 Paper Mario games there were so many Toads that had personalization to them even if it was something as simple as giving them glasses or holding a book, most of them had names and descriptions from the Goomba partners that let you learn just a little bit about them. The new Paper Mario games still have some of the best writing and all I want is a little more to identification to them to let me know which Toad is which.

Yeah, that image gives me some no-good vibes.

Honestly that is all I am asking for, a little white stripe to signal that this is a named character that plays an important role in the story or game.

Yeah, I do not mind as much as some do, but the lack of at least SOME 'small detail' Toads is a shame.
But at least we see Koopas with some neat details in the movie trailer. The one with a fake Eyepatch is neat. So maybe we'll get something like that for Toads. Some that at least sticks out a little bit.
I imagine the Main Toad has that backpack and stick and such to 'stick out', at least.

The Mario movie hype got me to watch Super Mario Bros.: The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach!, which I had known about for years but never thought to watch before today. There's a fanmade 4K restoration with subtitles on YouTube, which is what I watched.

Honestly, it was cute. Nothing special but an interesting relic of Nintendo history and also kind of neat to see an adaptation of Super Mario made this early, back when there was only one game to go off of. They pretty much did the best they could with such limited source material. It's only an hour long so check it out if you're interested.

That is genuinely mindblowing. How does one even spend 500 million on marketing?? Did they rent a giant yellow blimp and paint an eye on it?
that isn't out of the realm of possibility for them. the Despicable Me IP is plastered absolutely everywhere when a movie rolls around. even around seemingly irrelevant things. mindshare is a valuable thing

but even gaming companies spend that much on marketing. CoD, GTA, and I think Destiny hit those numbers once

I hope this continues the trend of having more characters that are visually different to one another in the games.

Gonna level with you, I don't care about your family anecdotes about how your family members are actually the non-bigoted Republicans. Everyone thinks their family members are actually not the "bad" Republicans. It's impossible for someone to support the Republican Party and not be racist and homophobic. They can couch it in whatever justifications they want, but it doesn't change the reality.

1-month ban for "not all X" rhetoric, then doubling down saying members lack civility and nuance (while ignoring their points) when they get understandably upset as a result - paranoodle, PixelKnight, Red Monster, Harina

Good talk! I won't bother to engage in a normal civil conversation with you then because I view reality as a bit more nuanced than that and no, sorry to dissapoint you, none of my republican family members are racist or homophobes. Thank you for dismissing the trauma due to the violence they faced as why some of them went republican (even if it out of irrational fear) because you see it as a cute anecdote.

Feel free to ignore me if you're going to be a jerk. I will do the same and problem solved. You should not have even bothered responding.

Goodbye.

What did I just read…?

Anyway, I think Kamek is just a “naked” koopa wearing blue pajamas and has a wand. Many of the games post-Yoshi’s Story set him up to be sort of Bowser’s right-hand man, even heavily implying to be the primary one who raised him.

Irrational fear….of what?

1-day ban for dragging up 4-year-old offsite posts as a gotcha. Your being upset is completely understandable, but please address or report someone's current points if they're an issue - paranoodle, PixelKnight, Red Monster, Harina

I mean, maybe your family shouldn't be bigots and they wouldn't have to face violence for their bigotry? Just a thought.

EDIT: Also, this you?

Wow. You’re really going there?

And did you just really god damn say my family deserved violence from Maduro and Chavistas?

Look, the thing is, ultimately your family is siding with a party who has historically been violent to people like me (disabled, queer) and continue to actively try to deny me and other basics rights and allowing us to live. I have every damn right to call your family out and the fact they are supporting groups that have caused not only active harm to people like me, but other minority groups as well. You do NOT get to play this card with me.

It is not my time to speak about this but having right wingers in the family doesn't excuse them for the shit they support even tho they are maybe nice to me.

There are people who get a ton of shit thrown at them in life who don't end up supporting literal fascists.

The pandemic and now the war are really showing how some folks tick in my family and I would lie if I said I still have the same relationship (if any at all) with them like I had before their outing as bigoted conspiracy theorists with fascist tendencies.

Don’t bring my family into it. I was trying to have a civil discussion and give a bit of a more nuance take on why some people vote the way they do, based on their own lived experiences.
Didn't you only just brought up that fact after the post was made? lol
No, I brought up trauma before here and how it can lead people do have irrational fears, in the case of many Latin Americans, they sided with the Republican Party out of fear of what they went through. It doesn’t make it rational, but fear in itself is irrational and not all decisions are driven by bigotry but rather they see own issue and have a narrow focus. The post says my family deserves violence. That’s unacceptable.

And I’m dropping it and leaving the thread that was suppose to be about a trailer. So hey, don’t engage me. Put me on ignore and move on.

You chose to bring up your family, so I have every right to question their beliefs and their harm that cause on my community and others.

I'm sure Chris Pratt choosing to follow numerous transphobes and other far right figures was a complete accident/coincidence! Or maybe he's not homophobic, transphobic, racist, etc, but just wants to be best pals with a ton of people who are! Guess there's nothing wrong with that! ???

Also, if you support a party who wants to take away my rights, you yourself are anti-LGBT. There's no getting around that.

Fuck anyone who wants me dead, or who wants to force me back into a closet.

"but he is really nice at the dinner table"

it is funny (actually sad and troubling) how many excuses some folks grant fascist supporting people because they have a personal relationship with them or like said persons.

Granting excuses for folks who vote for a party that literally tried to start a coup because they are sore losers. Pretty tired of it.
