Pre-Release The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Pre-Release Discussion Thread

Not sure if already said, but there is this massive floating Island in the sky (close to top right in the screenshot). I doubt it's an island of nothing, so could it be a town or a dungeon?

what's really interesting about this one is how it doesn't even appear to be located over hyrule itself, judging by its distance from link and death mountain it appears as if it's floating over the sea to the east of the botw map

Before we got all the skyfall Link scenes, all we saw was underground. I mean I realize it was a cutscene, but that doesn't mean it can't be a playable area later on and we'll get to walk through this creepy door of our volition.

(meddled with the colour for that image...and it's been 3 yrs so it might not look the same - which also had me wondering if the tiny glimpse of cave drawings from the first reveal trailer have been changed to the engraving/parchment one we saw in the newest one...though they're likely separate things)
Every teaser seems to be deliberate. Just some hints about what this game is all about. So them showing underground sections even tho it was just a cut scene wasn't just for that story introduction.

I refuse to speculate until we have a trailer that's over 60 seconds.

But ... We all know the Tears as in Tears of the Kingdom probably relay the hook of the game. And we know Skyward Sword, Twilight Princess and Spirit Tracks all had items aptly named "Tears."

So which one is the function of the Tears now, besides the stuff we saw last year?

-Power up a sword (Spirit Tracks)
-Power up some spirits (that look awfully like the guys with the 7 tears in these murals) by driving twilight away (Twilight Princess)
-Stun Guardians for a period longer than all the TOTK teasers combined so far (Skyward Sword)

🤔

Man, i forgot that shot of the entrance from the first trailer...

And heck, yeah, the islands in the sky seem as if they float over the see. I dont think so, bit it looks that way.
I feel like they are really hard at work to show as little as possible with the teaser trailers, lice cutting always in the right moment to not how towns, interesting artefacts, and really new stuff.

So in the same way we had Hyrule castle as the final goal visible throughout most of the game, I wonder if this time the visual goal will be something in the sky like the highest island in the sky will be the end goal this time as a sort vertical vs horizontal exploration difference between the 2 games

I'm pretty sure this is the case but I don't think the series has gone into detail about why the Shiekah are Hylia's chosen protectors. They are considered a different race than the Hylians and obviously have different cultures. So it seems odd they are serve a guardians for another races patron deity. How they became the guardians would be a cool story to elaborate on. Maybe we'll get some backstory in this game.

Call me a fool or something but I still believe we will see it in December at TGA at some capacity. (and I know Nintendo did not bring there something for years).
Idk when they will show it next but im hoping for TGA. I was thinking February Direct but thats just 3 months away from release

The last part isn't exactly true. It just weren't things most fans hoped for. But they still throw Geoff a bone here and there. I still don't think that they wanna show off more of the game before the Drake reveal. Maybe a really small teaser but personally speaking I doubt it.

I'd love to see Aonuma and Miyamoto playing a tiny slice of the opening hour.

I won't get it but I can dream.

I think they’re going to save Metroid. I believe Metroid was going to be shown at E3 until it was cancelled. So, Nintendo decided to move it later and sees the Game Awards as fit. TotK would come later

Well, if I recall last they were there was in 2020 with Smash, nothing I can think of last year. We will see what will happen.

There's an inverted height fog being applied, so I think it looks further away than it really is, and lower down than it really is. At the point link reaches the glider you can see a group of islands which are half poking out of the fog.
I tried to see how many islands there were but I lost count.

Edit: the tiny ones near Link's head seem to correspond with what we see in the Faron scene.

This looks 3 times the size of death mountain region, based on how far it is, it looks thats sitting right over the sea, very far from the playable area

I'm not holding my breath of footage at TGA. Nintendo kinda don't care about that ceremony since Reggie left. They can easily hold info until late January/Early February in a direct with a big trailer. They will still have 3 months to show it off. They will probably do a treehouse dedicated to it as well in the months leading to the release date.

The Legend of Zelda: Tier List of the Kingdom.

Link OP please nerf
the real tier list of the kingdom in my opinion

S+: Necluda, Lanayru, Eldin
A: Gerudo, Central Hyrule, Faron, Akkala
B: Tabantha, Ridgeland
C: Hebra
D:
F: Gerudo Highlands

Where is this from

probably press release

I’m trying to find the actual source for it. Nintendo’s website of the game has the same description, but it excludes the highlighted portion. It’s not there.

In addition to the vast lands of Hyrule, the latest entry in the storied Legend of Zelda series will take you up into the skies! Look forward to Link’s massive adventure starting again when The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, the sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, drops for Nintendo Switch on May 12, 2023.

Just found it on Nintendo Life as well.

It's an accurate quote, if you watch the delay video, Aonuma states that the expanded world goes beyond the sky/sky islands.

Not doubting it’s authenticity, just wondering where it came from exactly. Nintendo should update the wording on the website to match Aonuma and the press release.

Ooohhh yeah, absolutely caught that. Probably the thing that excited me the most from the teaser. And if we can see it from here, it’s undoubtedly massive, and I’m so giddy to see what’s over there.

I‘m probably just hallucinating and its just me but:

imo these sections sound very similar

title reveal 00:42 - 00:56

E3 2021 00:50 - 00:57

I hear it too, that section from last year always sounded odd to me because the vocals seemed 'reversed'.

When hearing the reversed trailer music and comparing it to the same section, I think that section of music is palindromic - it sounds similar forwards and backwards.

Maybe I am also hallucinating this, I'll probably spend like half an hour in Audacity to check. Or transcribe it and check the notes.

0:41, comparing to 0:42 in the title reveal:

What other thing have we been discussing recently that is the same, forwards and backwards? Hmm....

🤔

Yeah I am very excited to explore that large island, there may be a town there lol, or big dungeon.

And I think its over Lanayru area and not that far away. As for other large islands besides what we saw in Tabantha and this one, theres probably gonna be more than what we've seen in the trailers

Good catch. Really driving the ouroboros concept forward. Would be funny if we'll end the game at the beginning of this one or one other previous zelda title.

Like I said before, I think it's Hylia. I think people are too hung up on the depiction not looking like... just a lady. Real life depictions of Gods often look pretty wild. Remember we're supposed to be looking at these characters through the worldview of whatever ancient civilization carved this.

I thought it's pretty obvious that it's someone new. A new character. Every Zelda game has tons of them.

Zonai are a new race so whoever this Zonai deity or chief or whatever is has to be a new character, right?
Yeah I think it’s someone new too, but I think she is the green arm, or the green arm that was holding Ganondorf is all that’s left of her.

This thing is an Aghnim situation when I look at it. The head is the part above the glowing things. Goofy smile with curved eyes. The glowing things are breast plates. Things protruding from the back of the head are little wings. I can’t unsee any of it.

There's going to be new characters, but I don't think that is who this is. The way it's presented is a joining or intertwining of Zelda and whoever this is. Along with the 7 swirls, which could represent sages, I think Hylia makes the most sense.

Yeah, I'm more on the side of it being someone completely new myself.

I think this is Ganondorf. It's different from the "Zelda" one holding hands. It's like we will broke Demise's curse in this one.
I thought it was Ganondorf, it's the same pose he was sealed in, but the Ganondorf mummy has round ears and this looks like it has pointy ears. And the clothing doesn't match 1:1 but the engravings are so heavily stylized that it's hard to tell. The other figure shown later on is definitely Zelda.

Yeah you're probably right. That's not Zelda. Her likeness (or what we're assuming is her) doesn't have the circle-chain necklace this one has. The eyes are also different. Hers you can see the pupil and they look open. The other is made to look closed I think. The circle-chain jewelry is the same as the main deity or whatever people have labelled it (I haven't watched any videos...which may be obvious as most of this has probably been said already lol)

z1.png

And even though it's highly stylized, I can't be certain it's the same pose. That one seems much more...uncomfortable. Though the more I look at it the more similar they get lol the left one just seems like falling or being cast out, but in the right one he is obviously standing, The ears and jewelry are way off but eh, art.

z3.png

It probably is the same person, but might not be the same part of the story. You can see the spreading malice at the very bottom of the screen below. It's depicted the same was in the battle scene. Curious who (or what) that figure is on the right. It's got the same circle-chain detail but other than that it's not similar to the deity's outfit.

z2.png

Speaking of the deity, if you brighten up the image through the black fog you can see depictions of land. I mean, it was pretty obvious anyway what they were going for, but you can't spell it out much more than that.

z4.png

Ok probably should end it here. Running out of steam. But check out those weird holes. Do you think we'll get to play Ganon like an Ocarina in this game? No wonder he's so full of malice. (alternative caption: speed holes eh? rubs chin)

z5.png

Finally, as a reward (or further punishment) for reaching the end:

Ganon-Homer.png

I've seen a lot of people complain about Bill Trinen's statement about the title of the game, but I think Nintendo was right for not revealing the name/logo until now.

While "Tears of the Kingdom" isn't exactly a huge spoiler, the title doesn't make much sense if you've only watched trailer 1 and 2. It's pretty clear that the "Kingdom" is at least partially referring to the lost Zonai tribe, which was only vaguely referenced in the other two trailers. The "tears" also reference the chunks of rock that fall from the sky islands, which again were only vaguely seen in the second trailer.

Then there's the symbol of the Ouroboros that is present in the logo, which references Mayan/Zonai architecture that were most prominent in the third trailer. Finally, we didn't know that the Master Sword was broken until the delay announcement that happened many months after the second trailer, and it is shown broken in the logo.

While there were many loose connections to "tears" and a "kingdom" in the first two trailers, the most recent trailer is what brings all these connections together.

I'm not saying it isn't her, there's a high chance that it is, but without watching the video, you already know that Zeltik would conclude that the figure is Hylia. When Zelda Youtubers see a new thing, they want it to connect to something from a previous game. So if the mysterious figure is interacting with someone that looks like Zelda, then it must be Hylia.

Anyways, I'm hoping the new figure is a brand new character, maybe a new god we haven't seen before. The introduction of new gods really expands upon the mythology. Just the introduction of Hylia in Skyward Sword really expanded upon the scope of the lore.

The plot of the game is that Ganondorf captures Zelda to use her in a machine that will make him beautiful. Whenever you get a game over or quit out, you get a cutscene of Ganondorf emerging from the machine all beautiful while Zelda is all shriveled up.

Wait...
