Pre-Release The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Pre-Release Discussion Thread

Yeah, a lot of us are beginning to believe tears can be read both ways and 'tears of the kingdom', can still be a fitting title.
I've thought this too, but would that work in Japanese? I know its the same title in Japan, but doesn't Japanese have a different word for the two types of 'tear'? So when written in Japanese it could only have one meaning couldn't it?

Correct. There's a lot of speculation around it, but in Japanese there is no ambiguity. It's Tears as in "teardrops".

Nintendo has now provided official clarification. According to the company, the word means crying.

Cool, now we can debate whether the green vials on Links belt contain the tears.

You will probably just be able to press some button that allows you to see just the sky kingdom, Hyrule, or underground areas.

Islands have extremely huge elevation differences and I have trouble believing there won't be overlapping islands because the phasing-through-matter mechanic is literally made for it.

I think people are severely underestimating how high up islands in the sky will reach in terms of elevation anyway. I think what we saw in terms of height is just the tip of the ice berg.

In the second trailer you can see Link skydiving onto some sky islands from an even higher elevation. I wonder where the ceiling is. Maybe space or (as someone else predicted) Hylian heaven?

I think the vials store green energy to power the magic arm runes. Concept art for the Shiekah Slate shows a similar looking vial / cartridge storing amber energy that was originally going to be injected into the Slate, this might be repurposing that idea.

I think since this game is stepping away from the Shiekah tech it makes thematic sense for Link to need a separate container to store rune energy, old-school. I also think there will be upgrades to add more vials to the belt like the magic meter.

While I think the tears will be concentrated green spirit energy too, I don't think Link will carry them in the vial. They almost seem "too important" for that but I could be wrong.

My guess is the tears are key items that can be used to expel Malice from large areas, so like how the tears of light are used to cast out Twilight, this could be used to cleanse an area on the surface of Malice. Maybe you don't even 'collect' them but they're immediately used up to save a province.

The spirit arm is made of pure green energy that seems resistant to Malice, and when it's bound to Link, it saves him from the Malice spreading to the rest of his body. (Also I love this shot)

It's been discussed before that the color of this energy is identical to the Luminous Stones and the ghosts from BotW, so it's some kind of representation of spirit energy or actual spirits. I think 'Tears of the Kingdom' could also be referring to the concentrated emotion and souls of the ancient people which acts against the pure hatred and resentment of Ganondorf's Malice. So a single 'teardrop' may be the spirit of a sage or group of individuals.

Lot of meaning in that title - tears like teardrops representing islands on Hyrule's face (like "Breath" meaning wind but also life), literal teardrops as key items, and tears meaning a wave of emotion.

This is really fun to speculate about, BotW had a lot of setup for this.

tears of the kingdom, as in ripping, is a very unnatural turn of phrase in english. "tears in the kingdom", however, rolls off the tongue naturally

Referring to ripping, "Tears of the Kingdom" sounds pretty good and isn't hard to pronounce. I don't think many of us thought the title was exclusively referring to tears as in ripping, but the idea that "Tears of the Kingdom" could be a fitting title in either pronounciation seemed like a clever idea for a title.
It looks like the sky kingdom has multiple islands stacked on top of each other as well. So maybe there's a 3D map for the sky and a regular map for Hyrule?
It could be a 3D map, or they could divide the sky islands into multiple layers.

A 3D could work, multiple layers/maps of the sky islands could also be used. A side view of a group of islands could be used in some cases.

Yeah, tears either power the arm or give it a new ability, or do something else entirely. If you look at the bottom of the screen when the stone eagle is flying and the logo is just starting to appear, there's a small strucutre with a green swirl around it near the stable. Maybe that is a "recharging station" or something, and the vials store the information to change abilities/runes. All speculation of course.

Eventually we'll go down the rabbit hole of, "tears can be pronounced like tiers, and tiers can refer to multiple levels."

Tiers of the Kingdom

That was actually the first thing I said in the other reveal thread lol.

I didn't even think about the crying/ripping thing. I went straight to tiers.

Tears does feel like a play on tiers, the layers of Hyrule.

I think everyone realizes how multilayered this title. It’s so good. They hit it on the head.
Yeah, I really like Breath of the Wild as a title. Really embodies the spirit and design of the game.
But I still like Tears of the Kingdom more. Its a really good title imo. The perfect balance of edginess, mystique and melancholy.

So, the presence of that dragon hidden behind trees in the last teaser and the extended dragon imagery we've seen makes me think back to this 'leak'.

There is someone who supposedly working on the game shared some little detail about this game on Weibo (Chinese Twitter). She is working on 3D animation (maybe cutscenes?) from maybe one of Nintendo's contractors based in Tokyo. She joined the project back in March last year. Below is the Summary from her relevant posts. Take it with a grain of salt:
Spoiler
- New game plus and Link looks different(?) after you beat the game.
  • She did some roaring dragon and flying dragon animation.
  • Some animation about first time picking up the Slate (from BotW)

This animation contractor supposedly worked on dragon animations, an animation about picking up the Slate for the first time, and knows about a New Game+ with a new outfit.

Not much to go off of and it's still easy to fake since one could guess dragon involvement prior to this teaser if they knew enough about the Zonai, but I'll humor it. Makes sense that they'd need new animations for new dragons roaming the sky.

Link most likely will not use the Slate so I wonder who'd be picking it up, if the Slate is even active - maybe it's Zelda trying to get it to work. She was the last one to use it in the BotW true ending, after all.

Regarding NG+ - I can buy it. Not sure how an animator would know about it but I guess if they were animating the specific new outfit that's where they'd find out.

Idk, at this point I've just been scanning all the morsels of info we have about this game to see how it all ties together, because if you couldn't tell already I'm a lil obsessed. 😳

I‘m still wondering what the yellow glowing orb and the letter on links hand in the delay announcement footage mean… It really doesn’t fit with the the existing clues
I agree, there are some missing clues that prevent us from figuring out how the mechanics in this work. I'm not sure if we'll ever be able to figure out how even the arm works with speculation and the 3 teaser trailers.

Just want to say that whether all of us in here throwing out theories are 100% right, 100% wrong, or somewhere in between, getting to make these theories at all is one of the best aspects leading up to a new Zelda game’s release.

Ok wait a minute, I knew about this line of dialogue but I just realized the kid explicitly says 'kingdom'. Whoa.

Back when I read this I assumed it to be a Skyloft reference but I can see how they'd rework it.

It's his Monado.

A decent analysis video of the new trailer that’s still pretty brief.

Ok, seeing the direct comparison with the location in Faron, there seems to definitely be a cave of some kind now. Hope there's more. Access to the underground, maybe?

Nintendo website says it is PEGI 12 (provisionally). Does this mean PEGI already has the game in hand?

Huh. Well this is interesting. This would imply that whatever the Sky Kingdom is it’s still there… at least in the time of Breath of the Wild. I’m guessing that it’s still there, and the Sky Islands we see are just the results of the foundations of Hyrule tearing apart and forming the islands above as we see them.

The Sky Kingdom itself then would be much, much higher above Hyrule and the Sky Islands. I personally believe it’s the Heavens where the goddesses reside. Remember, Ocarina of Time establishes that the heavens exist: "The three great goddesses, their labors completed, departed for the heavens and golden sacred triangles remained at the point where the goddesses left the world."

And in some religions, heaven itself is also referred to as a Kingdom.

I feel like people want stuff in Zelda that would make no sense. "I want Zelda playable". Okay... why ? She's going to be slower, doesn't use weapons, and has her powers out at the end of Botw. Everything in Botw was made for Link. Is she going to have the same abilities as him ? Link's arm will be the key to it. Is her arm going to be affected by it ? If you thought the freedom of dungeon reduced story telling... then if you can just have multiple characters switch places, the dialogue will be reduced as well. Imo, the only way i could see her playable is like Peach in Paper Mario. When Link finished a dungeon for example, you have a small portion of linear exploration to do underground and discovers tea on Ganon along the way or something that tease upcoming threats to Link. But it would be short and purely for narrative. But i'm not sure how people would like these phases. Zelda has a big replay value and that would probably turn off a lot of speedrunners and randomizers. I get what you guys are asking for, but i just feel like it wouldn't work.

Not sure if already said, but there is this massive floating Island in the sky (close to top right in the screenshot). I doubt it's an island of nothing, so could it be a town or a dungeon?

Yes i've seen it and felt like people didn't really pointed it out as much in their analysis. Like it's so far away, it's probable MASSIVE. At that distance, Vah Medoh was tiny and once on it, it was pretty large. It could very well have a big town and a dungeon imo.

I do think these islands will have a lot of variety and could go up a lot.

There's not much indication that any of the sky islands were the result of land being ripped out of Hyrule. The only evidence I could see is Hyrule castle, which is only floating above the surface because of the malice being blasted out of the ground. And that the great deku tree is missing, but it could have sunk underground for all we know. The crater we see is where a tower was located, and is still full of water that was there in Botw.

One cool thing about a layered world is how they could theoretically scale difficulty progression organically by making higher up or deeper down places progressively harder and more hostile.

I also love how there seem to be unclimbable walls in the sky. Really can't wait what challenges they designed for us. There was some really creative stuff in BotW.

The Master Trials showed beautifully how much potential the games framework has for combat and progression.

i don't really want zelda to be playable but just to have a more active role in the game. i remember watching the story trailer for botw and thinking how you'd travel across hyrule with her and was super disappointed to find out it was just link's memories, but that's what i want to see in this game

Before we got all the skyfall Link scenes, all we saw was underground. I mean I realize it was a cutscene, but that doesn't mean it can't be a playable area later on and we'll get to walk through this creepy door of our volition.

(meddled with the colour for that image...and it's been 3 yrs so it might not look the same - which also had me wondering if the tiny glimpse of cave drawings from the first reveal trailer have been changed to the engraving/parchment one we saw in the newest one...though they're likely separate things)
