Yeah, a lot of us are beginning to believe tears can be read both ways and 'tears of the kingdom', can still be a fitting title. What if tears are actually pieces of Kingdom? A reign teared apart on the sky.
I've thought this too, but would that work in Japanese? I know its the same title in Japan, but doesn't Japanese have a different word for the two types of 'tear'? So when written in Japanese it could only have one meaning couldn't it?Yeah, a lot of us are beginning to believe tears can be read both ways and 'tears of the kingdom', can still be a fitting title.
Correct. There's a lot of speculation around it, but in Japanese there is no ambiguity. It's Tears as in "teardrops".I've thought this too, but would that work in Japanese? Nintendo has now provided official clarification. According to the company, the word means crying.
Cool, now we can debate whether the green vials on Links belt contain the tears.Nintendo clarifies how to pronounce Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom's name
It took three years from the original announcement, but we finally learned that the next Zelda game for Switch will be called The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Ever since the reveal in 2019, Nintendo simply referred to the game as “The sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild”...nintendoeverything.com
A 3D map, perhaps, like the divine beasts' maps? How on earth are they gonna do a world map for this game?! There's multiple locations stacked on top of each other!
That would make sense, but given how big the map is that might be a little challenging.A 3D map, perhaps, like the divine beasts' maps?

You will probably just be able to press some button that allows you to see just the sky kingdom, Hyrule, or underground areas. That would make sense, but given how big the map is that might be a little challenging.
tears of the kingdom, as in ripping, is a very unnatural turn of phrase in english. "tears in the kingdom", however, rolls off the tongue naturallyYeah, a lot of us are beginning to believe tears can be read both ways and 'tears of the kingdom', can still be a fitting title.
It looks like the sky kingdom has multiple islands stacked on top of each other as well. So maybe there's a 3D map for the sky and a regular map for Hyrule? You will probably just be able to press some button that allows you to see just the sky kingdom, Hyrule, or underground areas.

In the second trailer you can see Link skydiving onto some sky islands from an even higher elevation. I wonder where the ceiling is. Maybe space or (as someone else predicted) Hylian heaven?Islands have extremely huge elevation differences and I have trouble believing there won't be overlapping islands because the phasing-through-matter mechanic is literally made for it.
I think people are severely underestimating how high up islands in the sky will reach in terms of elevation anyway. I think what we saw in terms of height is just the tip of the ice berg.
I think the vials store green energy to power the magic arm runes. Concept art for the Shiekah Slate shows a similar looking vial / cartridge storing amber energy that was originally going to be injected into the Slate, this might be repurposing that idea.Cool, now we can debate whether the green vials on Links belt contain the tears.

It could be a 3D map, or they could divide the sky islands into multiple layers. It looks like the sky kingdom has multiple islands stacked on top of each other as well. So maybe there's a 3D map for the sky and a regular map for Hyrule?
A 3D could work, multiple layers/maps of the sky islands could also be used. A side view of a group of islands could be used in some cases.Islands have extremely huge elevation differences and I have trouble believing there won't be overlapping islands because the phasing-through-matter mechanic is literally made for it.

Yeah, tears either power the arm or give it a new ability, or do something else entirely. If you look at the bottom of the screen when the stone eagle is flying and the logo is just starting to appear, there's a small strucutre with a green swirl around it near the stable. Maybe that is a "recharging station" or something, and the vials store the information to change abilities/runes. All speculation of course.I think the vials store green energy to power the magic arm runes. Concept art for the Shiekah Slate shows a similar looking vial / cartridge storing amber energy that was originally going to be injected into the Slate, this might be repurposing that idea.
I think since this game is stepping away from the Shiekah tech it makes thematic sense for Link to need a separate container to store rune energy, old-school. I also think there will be upgrades to add more vials to the belt like the magic meter.
While I think the tears will be concentrated green spirit energy too, I don't think Link will carry them in the vial. They almost seem "too important" for that but I could be wrong.
My guess is the tears are key items that can be used to expel Malice from large areas, so like how the tears of light are used to cast out Twilight, this could be used to cleanse an area on the surface of Malice. Maybe you don't even 'collect' them but they're immediately used up to save a province.
The spirit arm is made of pure green energy that seems resistant to Malice, and when it's bound to Link, it saves him from the Malice spreading to the rest of his body. (Also I love this shot)
It's been discussed before that the color of this energy is identical to the Luminous Stones and the ghosts from BotW, so it's some kind of representation of spirit energy or actual spirits. I think 'Tears of the Kingdom' could also be referring to the concentrated emotion and souls of the ancient people which acts against the pure hatred and resentment of Ganondorf's Malice. So a single 'teardrop' may be the spirit of a sage or group of individuals.
Lot of meaning in that title - tears like teardrops representing islands on Hyrule's face (like "Breath" meaning wind but also life), literal teardrops as key items, and tears meaning a wave of emotion.
This is really fun to speculate about, BotW had a lot of setup for this.
Tiers of the KingdomEventually we'll go down the rabbit hole of, "tears can be pronounced like tiers, and tiers can refer to multiple levels."
How deep does the rabbit hole that Zelda fell into go?Tiers of the Kingdom

Tiers of the Kingdom
Tears does feel like a play on tiers, the layers of Hyrule.
Yeah, I really like Breath of the Wild as a title. Really embodies the spirit and design of the game.I think everyone realizes how multilayered this title. It’s so good. They hit it on the head.
being aware of BotW's lore and dialogue will really pay off in TotK. I can feel it.
There is someone who supposedly working on the game shared some little detail about this game on Weibo (Chinese Twitter). She is working on 3D animation (maybe cutscenes?) from maybe one of Nintendo's contractors based in Tokyo. She joined the project back in March last year. Below is the Summary from her relevant posts. Take it with a grain of salt:
Spoiler
- New game plus and Link looks different(?) after you beat the game.
- She did some roaring dragon and flying dragon animation.
- Some animation about first time picking up the Slate (from BotW)
I agree, there are some missing clues that prevent us from figuring out how the mechanics in this work. I'm not sure if we'll ever be able to figure out how even the arm works with speculation and the 3 teaser trailers.I‘m still wondering what the yellow glowing orb and the letter on links hand in the delay announcement footage mean… It really doesn’t fit with the the existing clues

A decent analysis video of the new trailer that’s still pretty brief.
I think someone already came up with this one in the Direct speculation threadPoop of the Multiverse

Spit of the Continent
Sneeze of the Planet

I think it's purely a fun reference to Slyward Sword, that's all.
Eventide 2.0Not sure if already said, but there is this massive floating Island in the sky (close to top right in the screenshot). I doubt it's an island of nothing, so could it be a town or a dungeon?
Yes i've seen it and felt like people didn't really pointed it out as much in their analysis. Like it's so far away, it's probable MASSIVE. At that distance, Vah Medoh was tiny and once on it, it was pretty large. It could very well have a big town and a dungeon imo.Not sure if already said, but there is this massive floating Island in the sky (close to top right in the screenshot). Ok, seeing the direct comparison with the location in Faron, there seems to definitely be a cave of some kind now. Hope there's more. Access to the underground, maybe?
