It gave me heartburn just by looking at it. I prefer a white pizza with a little spinach and onion, maybe some pesto.
If by "white pizza" you mean "pizza with extra cheese and a shitton of olive oil and garlic sauce" then hell yes. Pesto/alfredo/white sauce can also be very good.

Well, in true Sonic-fan fashion...

Yeah don't get me wrong, the Wii U had some great games, but the droughts between them could be absolutely brutal, Switch feels like a paradise in comparison, for me at least.

"Switch is just ports" just feels like such a bizarre claim given the huge library the system has accumulated by this point, many of which are brand new games.
Reading it, I felt like I fell through a time warp into 2018.

Heck, even if we exclude all ports, (and I maintain there's nothing inherently wrong with ports; for instance I love being able to play stuff like Witcher 3, Doom 2016/Eternal, Hellblade, etc on my Switch) I'd say the Switch tops the Wii U in terms of original content alone.

Loved the Wii U at the time and there are still things I miss from it like being able to message friends and being able to own Virtual Console games. Miiverse may have been a disaster in terms of moderation, but I genuinely miss the fun chaos it brought.

Aside from my Virtual Console stuff which I’m still working on playing, I was virtually ready to move on to the Switch when it was done since my backlog was minimal (I played through nearly all of the big releases). Really hope the last few games stuck on it, Xenoblade X, Yoshi, and Paper Mario, make it over to Switch. Not worried about the Zeldas coming.

Oh yeah well I made my chili dogs in the microwave

seriously though, wow

Wii U still has the best party games… Switch is really missing out by not having more asynchronous multiplayer games like Nintendo Land and Game & Wario. It’s amazing we even got PAC-MAN VS. on Switch with dual screen support (yet it never released on Wii U, oddly), but I want more! Nintendo party sessions just aren’t the same on Switch as they were on Wii U… Even the non-asynchronous multiplayer games on Switch aren’t quite as good for parties as their counterparts were on Wii U, like Smash for Wii U which had the super fun Smash Tour mode (I’ll never understand why people didn’t like that mode, ‘cause it was the best for parties and casual play), which Ultimate sadly lacks.

It’s going well, apart from that I got covid and it kicked my ass. After two and a half years of avoiding it…

How are you?

Also get well @Skittzo !
Thanks! Biggest issue I'm dealing with is cabin fever with two young kids and a puppy, health wise I'm just tired. Hopefully they let me get some sleep one day this month.

I hope you're doing well.

Aw, I'm sorry to hear it; as far as I know I've still managed to avoid it myself.

As for me, I'm doing alright. I graduated from university in December and have been trying to find work since. I'm glad to hear from you!

12/10 perfect amount of meat on a pizza.

I am immovably Ron Swanson in this regard; pizza is a meat delivery service. I will not be swayed nor shamed in this stance.

It sometimes gets derided as a “pizza without toppings” but over the years I’ve come to appreciate a good, simple cheese pizza. What’s better than a slice of a warm, melty, saucy cheese pizza? Nothing.

Dammit now I need to go get pizza.
Goddamn, we got a couple throwbacks with @reconceptualize and now @Gay Bowser making a comeback! Welcomes backs boths of yous!

It really do be feeling like a Direct miracle round these parts 🥹

Why yes I could move forward in the xbc3 story, or I could beat the two colony/hero backtrack sidequests I’m slightly under leveled for and then dig around the second area for anything useful first. XD done for tonight tho. You’d think I’d know myself after the last 2.5 games. Heck I don’t think I ever ran into the sidequest gate in Torna I was so on top of it.

I used to be the same but lately I'm more interested in cheese and sauce content. Like yes, likes my pepps and my sausig, but if they skimp on the cheese and sauce then no amount of meat will fix that for me.

Actually what I've been doing lately is getting a half pepperoni/olive, and half sausage/bellpepper, and then alternating slices. I used to get, like, all the things, bit is starting being overwhelming for my mouth and I now find the simpler combinations to be more rich, somehow. I still like diverse toppings, just not all at once. 😅

And if the pizzeria has the little pepperonis that curl when baked? I'm marrying that place. Those are the Lucy Lawless of pepperoni.

Your friend needs to go to a psychotherapist
Being actually serious here, yes, we already told him. He does this with almost everything. Hot dogs? take only the sausage. Hamburguers? only the patty. Sushi? only the content leaving the rice and the seaweed

Oh I hella agree; no such thing as too much cheese, but you can definitely have too little. Used to be a pizza joint near me if you got the meat lovers with double mozzarella; there was so much cheese it covered all the toppings underneath. It was gooey like
eating-pizza.gif

It was 😘👌 magnifique

...but then someone fucked up the management and the next time I ordered there the sauce was wack, not nearly the same level of cheese, the dough was burnt and the pepperoni was charred. Look, I know I prefer soft pepperoni as opposed to crispy and I will die defending those who like pepperoni even if it's different from my tastes, but how do you fuck up the dough? The bottom had the same texture as a brick wall.

I haven't been back since and Pizza Nova, despite being a chain, is at least consistent in quality. Maybe it was just an off day and I'm willing to give them one more chance, but I'm still hesitant...

I actually think we’re due Nintendo Switch Selects, but I think people might be disappointed that the games might be more “1-2-Switch” and “Captain Toad” than “BotW” and “Super Mario Odyssey.” Still, it will be a good way to give a shot in the arm (heh, like ARMS, get it) to early Switch games that have more or less stopped selling (like…ARMS). There are a lot of those games that can use another shot at sales. Is anyone buying Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze for $60 in 2022? Kirby Star Allies? Yoshi’s Crafted World?

Maybe Bayonetta 1 will be joined by more games at that $29.99 price point on September 30. (Just speculating)

So I was gonna finish up the story mode of Sonic Origins tonight but I had this weird thought all of a sudden about how really good the trailer was for Mission: Impossible 7 was, so before going into Origins I pulled up youtube to give it a rewatch with the volume up and then youtube recommended some videos of Colin Jost and Micheal Che clowning on each other and now several hours later I just sorta guess I'll finish Origins tomorrow night..? 🤷‍♂️

Just finished the final episode of Angel. I never saw Buffy or Angel back in the day so I binge watched both shows from beginning to end over the course of two months. I enjoyed both shows immensely. Oh and Fred/Illyra was totally my show crush.

Anyway. Now that it's all over.... I don't know what to do with my life. At least until Splatoon 3 comes out.

I'm definitely interested in hearing it if you wanna put your thoughts into spoiler tags.

Don't worry, I won't argue with you lol
it’s been a day or two now so a lot of my thoughts kind of smeared, but…

the film sets up several things that feel very prescient and real and on point and then just… follows through on the framing in a way that feels like dunking on the possibilities / realities of the metaphors

like… mmm let me try to pinpoint them:
  • Joy’s difficulty with Evelyn being boiled down to “nihilism,” instead of the followthrough of their relationship
  • that nihilism being abstracted from it’s own validity despite throwaway lines about systemic issues
  • positioning Joy as the antagonist at all and having the semi-twist be that she doesn’t want to destroy it all, she just wants to die and all of that stems from just… existing? so many like threads towards “there are reasons things are rough” and then having them be so disconnected? like setting it up with the very real “I just want you to understand too” and doing that excellent rock scene to have it all just still kind of land like “well actually it’s all an attitude problem” basically sucks
  • Waymond’s outlook as a form of resistance being boiled down to “optimism” and that optimism manifesting as “just be kind to everyone and it’s fine” instead of like… a more thorough and realistic take on that? like I was crying while dude was talking about how holding that shit up is hard and it’s own work, but then having that turn into like some “throw flowers at cops” shit?? and they still could have made the gag they were going for work without completely dissolving it like they did
  • also really not into the metaphorical follow-through of that being her husband saying “you don’t have to fight anymore” without the conditions changing
  • a big fuck you to the conclusion that “well Joy’s great because she’s a fuck up but somebody loves her and that’s her value to the world” and “Evelyn’s also a fuck up but it’s all just okay because Waymond loves her” like instead of addressing… anything about them being valid as people????
  • especially when it was setting up so much “their broad interests and restlessness actually make them that much more talented and aware” that it just dropped?
  • plus like Evelyn stands up to her dad for Joy (sort of??) but then keeps saying shitty things to Joy instead of trying harder? like ignoring the ways in which she’s hurting her kid??
  • like for anyone familiar with the distinct horrors of a strained mother-daughter relationship, it did such a good job of representing the pain of that and then none of the dealing with it or resolving it or acknowledging it in a way that felt real??
  • or like it had so many elements that could have pulled together on that but just let them clatter on the floor at the end??
  • and sure Evelyn “sees” Waymond in new light, but then like… doesn’t address at all the way she was making him feel? enough to want a divorce? like it feels like her self-recognition and actually being better to anyone is all hypothetical and off-screen
there’s loads more to delve into on those points and adjacent but I’m pretty tired so I’m sure I’m losing the thread again

but yeah, had a lot of good that both in conclusion and with a little scrutiny felt really… dropped somehow

and also felt like it suffered from “two dudes write for women” syndrome

and it did a lot better than most instances of that, to be sure

but… idk. and maybe I’m overthinking it / underthinking it / a menace and should be stopped

Watch Firefly, or Quantum Leap, or Jack of all Trades if you like Bruce Campbell
I did catch Firefly and Serenity back in the day 😃 same with Quantum Leap, tho probably not every single episode (and prob not in the correct order). JoaT I’ll add to my list.

I looked to the left at my dvd shelf to find recommendations from shows I loved in high school that gave me Buffy era TV nostalgia (hope Jack of all Trades is as much fun as I remember if you end up watching it lol)

Also right there on my shelf I remembered Detroit Metal City. Best live action anime movie of all time. That’s like a king of trash mountain award but I stand by it

Underrated theme song

Man, I miss those nights of staying up way too late playing Mario Kart and this or Beastmaster being the only things on.

I feel like this show (and a few others like it or the aforementioned Beastmaster or Cleopatra 2525) were made specifically to be super late night adventure shows.

True, very true. To be honest pure home consoles have never fitted well in my life even when I was young. My parents had a rule that I could only play games on the weekends as long as my grades were Bs or higher and even then we were rarely home during those times. Growing up with asthma prevented me from doing extracurricular activities with other kids so my parents opted to take me to festivals and events rather then have me stay home. This meant long car trips so I would have a bag with a book, notebook, and my Game Gear (later GBC) to keep me occupied which is a habit I still keep even now.
Yeah, it's rooted in childhood circumstances in my case as well. I've got two siblings, both of them were and are into gaming as well; so as kids, we had to share with one another, for we only had one living room TV and one PS1/PS2/Wii/PS3 respectively. We also went on a lot of trips with the whole family, and to keep us entertained during car rides (and to help with any potential argument about who's turn it is in playing on the TV if we were home instead), they bought us three GBAs. Though we already had a GB and a GBC before, we didn't play as much on them. The GBA was when we seriously got invested in gaming, also catching up on a lot of GB titles thanks to the backwards compatibility. Fantastic times.

There was something magical about being able to hold and have your very own console in your hands, and no need for sharing (!), but we were still able to play together thanks to stuff like the link cables. I mean, nowadays I'd obviously (hopefully, lol) be less stingy sharing a home console with others, but back then, having this little device all for yourself was quite the treat. This personal attachement to handhelds has stuck with me to this very day.

Basically: victim of circumstance and all that, but in a positive sense, haha.
One of my siblings actually has gone back to being home console only, even though they got a Switch close to launch as well; they just not really into playing like that anymore, sadly. The other one and I to this day are mostly into handhelds, though, and as a consequence into Nintendo (adjacent) games as well, with some PS Portable/Vita/Steam Deck action in the mix.

Hah, memories. Sweet.

@Magic-Man I felt bad about not being able to play Xenoblade due to this hand thing so I got a question. Is it playable with one hand?

I legit can't hold things good with my hand right now much less a controller

There were times I played it with one hand, but I don't think it is an ideal experience. Sometimes you'll want to move a stick, hold a shoulder button, and press face buttons. There are moments of downtime in combat like other games, it's not really an action game unless you play a specific class so it's definitely possible. The beginning part of the game in particular has the least amount of button presses, so if you wanted to give it a try just to wander around the first few areas especially it's probably fine.

Here's a pet peeve of mine:

When you're trying to find a gameplay screenshot of a game, search "Game Screenshot," in Google, and get a bunch of cinematic photo mode screenshots with no HUD.

Google is very bad for finding good or specific screenshots. Not sure what you are using them for, but I have better luck looking on specific sites like Steam or Gematsu for non-watermarked images. Sometimes the game has its own website with a few easy to grab screenshots or in a press kit you can wander into and get stuff there. Worst case you take them yourself which is thankfully a little easier to work with these days as you can send stuff to your phone easier on newer platforms.

The Wii U was a nifty little console that was designed and released at the absolute worst time.

There's no excusing Nintendo not paying attention to the market, and the console having the specs it did. Going into HD development, they should have known third parties would want some form of basic parity with what the others were doing, or at least having access to basic support for modern graphical features.

That being said

They released some absolute bangers for the system, the virtual console was fantastic, indie support was surprisingly off the hook, and when the Gamepad concept actually hit, it worked amazingly well.

Pikmin 3? Banger

Mario Kart 8? Banger

Mario 3D World? Better than Odyssey, most underrated Mario game ever

Breath of the Wild? One of the best games ever, absolute certified banger

Splatoon? Banger

Tropical Freeze? Best 2D platformer ever, couldn't be more of a banger

Nintendo should have done more to actually make the Wii U competitive with the other next-gen consoles from Microsoft and Sony. A Wii U that could play Call of Duty and Battlefield as well as Mario Kart and Splatoon would have been an entirely different proposition.

Honestly I can't see any good time for the Wii U to happen, nor any good way for it to be competitive with MS and Sony's offerings. The Gamepad inherently made it so they could never compete on price, the hardware itself was outdated very, very quickly after launch, and the game lineup was - like with the Gamecube - filled with games that were 'bangers', as you say, but not enough to get many more people buying the console itself. Hell, it even got many major third-party releases in its first years (CoD, Non-Legacy Fifa, Assassin's Creed) and that didn't help it because, I mean, why buy CoD on Wii U when you could buy it on the PS3/360 you already own, or get the much-better-looking version on the PS4/XB1.

Couple all that with the fact that you could get many similar experiences, and more experiences in general, on the much-cheaper and much-more-useful 3DS, and I think the console was destined to fail. A Wii U that didn't fail would not have been a Wii U.

The Switch is so special for so many reasons

One big one? When you pop in a cartridge, it just plays the game immediately

This morning I woke up and thought, hey, I’m finally gonna start that new Ratchet and Clank game on PS5! I pop the disc in, and bam, 45 minute install. I forgot all about installs because I’ve only had Nintendo consoles for so long. Well that stinks.

Edit: oh hey it finished early! Only 30 minutes instead of 45, let’s go!

…….

Now it has to update

Ffffffffffffff

Hot take: It's better that the Nintendo-Sony partnership fell through. Nintendo and Sony are the perfect yin-yang for the gaming industry.

The Wii U was the first home-console that I bought with my own money; At the time, with so little space to stay at home and play games and earning relatively little, the pace of releases was perfect; And, just like it is with the Switch for me right now, it's not like I'll be buying multiple games a month, and sometimes there isn't anything on the schedule that entices me either.. For example, I didn't lost sleep that I was skipping Bayonetta 2, Xenoblade Chronicles X or TMS #FE lol;

Heck, I'd argue that I'm waiting for games longer on Switch that I did on Wii U...

So like...this is also the aesthetic I plan on going for in my condo. Got a link for these choice furniture designs? 😅
Here you go:

Since I'm renting and I don't feel like this is going to be my final home, but I want to start to get rid of some hand-me-down furniture I've been carrying around since my first place in 2006 I'm not exactly breaking the budget on any of the items I'm looking at. Too afraid of stuff getting damaged in a move and it'll make negotiating with any future spouse easier 😅

Two desk options I'm looking at:

And these are the two TV stand options I'm considering for later:

End tables and coffee table are TBD since the ones I have a hand-me down set that go together and I'm thinking they may be able to hang with the new stuff.

Fantastic! No more hideous borders for goodness' sake.
It pains me that when I went to get a physical copy of AC:New Leaf (in case my 2DS ever dies and I can't transfer the digital version to a new device) the Welcome Amiibo edition is only available with Nintendo Selects branding
