Alright. For those who watched Microsoft’s presentation. What would Nintendo have to show for their direct to be better for you?
I know I said earlier that Silksong + Persona would be enough to make it above anything Nintendo could possibly show, but both those announcements came with enough caveats that honestly, a new Fire Emblem and 2022 release dates for Mario + Rabbids and Bayo would probably do it for me.

Thinking about it, that was an interesting show: Microsoft basically turned it into "Microsoft games + damn near everything that used to be big on PC" like Bethesda, Blizzard, etc. I think that in general it was a great show if you are or were into PC gaming in particular, maybe less so for the Microsoft side specifically.

Trailer for Xb 3, Splatoon and Bayonetta 3 with 2022 release date, Trailer of Botw2 with some gameplay to be on par. A brand new DK or a New Fire Emblem would easily top this Showcase in terms of First party release. In terms of Indies and third party well... It's hard, Gamepass Is an unstoppable machine. I liked Xbox Showcase a lot.

It’s really just a taste thing for me, but also, like I watch these shows every year and I’ll find one or two games that are kinda interesting, but they’re so far out I forget about them by the time they release.

Nintendo just kinda has to do what they usually do and it’ll easily be better for me, especially if it’s close to the level of the last 3 directs, those were phenomenal.

P3/4/5 and Silksong, simply because I'm way more excited at the thought of those coling to Switch than I am for Xbox.

Although another Xenoblade 3 trailer, a Banjo remaster, and new FE would blow this out of the water

Regardless of rumors surrounding a Switch version, ignoring other platforms for the announcement of the Persona games just feels bad. Like why do Switch Persona fans need to constantly have the rug pulled? The Steam port information is also unclear so Steam Deck may not be as straightforward.

All I want is a way to play 5 portably and Altus is going out their way to make it as hard as they can.

Expecting direct talk to heat up starting this week, the focus will be on Nintendo, or rather, where the hell they are

I hate to be "that guy" since I feel like we point this out nearly every half-year now (and then tons of things get delayed) but DAMN early 2023 is stacked
It better be right this time, given the reason 2023 is stacked is because of 2022 delays 😂

Eventually we'll be right about what year will be stacked

Or we'll just get all these announcements diluted out so that nothing feels that stacked

The Xbox show was fine and Nintendo should easily be able to blow it away. A suitably epic Bayonetta 3 trailer would knock out every Xbox reveal that isn't Starfield.

Xbox showcase was nothing more than an overgrown Indie World + some first party updates (three first party reveals: Forza, Mnecraft Legends and Pentiment). Direct can easily top this by showing few Capcom and Square games. For me just Megaman would suffice.

Persona ports for Xbox were hype but that's something Nintendo does all the time. Last direct we got Portal ports, for this one, who knows, we could get Half Life and Left 4 Dead ports?

Here’s hoping there’s a Direct this week. Which would have been the original date if E3 didn’t die (this year).

Just in case someone is still in doubt about Silksong, several other game trailers opened with "console-launch exclusive" but Silksong did not. It just said "day-one with Game Pass", which just reinforces it's not a Xbox exclusive as they just used the next available tagline. Besides, after the Nintendo Threehouse Switch gameplay it would be a pretty weird move by the devs anyway

Actually now I'm curious if there has ever been any kind of reversals like that, where a game was showcased in a place then ended up being exclusive elsewhere 🤔

A handful of smaller/lower budget Square Enix games would definitely be great to see. They seem to have a pretty good presence at every Direct, so hopefully this one won't be any different. They tend to be the best games Square Enix releases these days.

People have been asking for Persona on Switch since the NX era and got absolute shit. Nintendo doesn't do this all the time.
Sony neither. Let's not act as if Microsoft getting the 3 personas is just a "small thing"

More cool stuff from the Xbox show:

- Cocoon looks really interesting (hopefully coming to Switch too)

- Pentinent looks intriguing, and I always love a good mystery game

- Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty: Is this basically Nioh 3, but Three Kingdoms setting? Because that sounds FANTASTIC. If it's more of a straight action-game and less Souls-y I'm less interested, though

Weird to see Slime Rancher 2 on that list of 2022 games for the Xbox but no footage of it. Wonder if it's booked for the direct cause I know the first game sold extremely well on the Switch and it released so much later.

So much this. I enjoyed the Microsoft thing a lot, but general Directs just give me much more hype and excitement and it is definitely a taste thing. So Nintendo just needs to do their thing and i’ll be happy and like it more than any presentation of this Not-E3 so far.

Also: surely Persona announcements for Switch and Silksong release date will be on the Direct (it’s only my personal feeling).

My dream announcements :

Collection of Lufia : Lufia I, Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals (fixed*), Lufia III: The Legend Returns.

The Lufia series is awesome. While the first one isn't perfect by any means, the second one is actually a prequel with a lovely cast of characters, some big twists and an ending that still put me in tears (witch is ruined in the DS reboot because they did another ending because apparently we can't
have first the of one the main character die after the final battle and the other one sacrificing himself to save the world, ending with a bittersweet taste and showing Maxim's first love taking care of his child and crying over what happened and what it took to defeat the Sinistrals).

Lufia III on GBC is another beast. The game is gigantic but had to sacrifice something in exchange : now, all the dungeons rooms / stairs are randomized. While strange and a little off puting at first, once you realize what the game have to offer, it is incredible. Up to 9 allies in battles, a giant world to explore, loveable characters, a fucking plot twist with a gut wrenching ending, an excellent soundtrack. Probably the best JRPG on the system, you CAN'T go wrong with Lufia III.

Also, Lufia 2 and 3 both come with The Ancient Cave. It is a big ass randomized dungeon (if you're doing Lufia 2 first, this will give you a taste of Lufia 3) where you start at Level 1 with no items and equipement. All the chests you open give you items that only works in the dungeon and disapear once you get out, BUT : the red & blue chests give you permanent and powerful items you keep outside and whenever you come back inside. It is basically an full roguelike game inside the game. Lufia 3 even adds a side quest with Dragon Eggs and wishes once you reach the final level of the dungeon witch ends up giving you the final and most powerful character of the game.

The concept is so excellent it was even turned into a game on Steam : The Enchanted Cave 2.

Lufia IV: Ruins of Lore exists and it's the worst game in the franchise.

Collection of Gaia : Soul Blazer, Illusion of Time/Gaia, Terranigma (60 FPS patched for USA)
I'd need a whole thread to speak about the three masterpieces of Quintet on the SNES.

A handful of smaller/lower budget Square Enix games would definitely be great to see. They seem to have a pretty good presence at every Direct, so hopefully this one won't be any different. They tend to be the best games Square Enix releases these days.
There are few that were leaked: Final Fantasy tactics and Tactics Ogre remasters and Final Fantasy IX remake.

And teased by the devs: New games from Mana and SaGa series. Yep, Square definitely will have a big presence in this Direct.
People have been asking for Persona on Switch since the NX era and got absolute shit. Nintendo doesn't do this all the time.

While not as much as Persona series, Portal was one of most requested ports for Switch. And they haven't got "absolute shit" on Persona yet. Let's just patiently wait.

game announcement wraps

cut to next headline; everyone who knows it identifies it as the James Bond gun barrel opening

Narrator: Next, a legendary shooter is reborn!

Then it cuts to:

To be better, it wouldn't take a whole lot. I enjoy Xbox but was fairly underwhelmed by the presentation
This, tbh. Almost this whole summer games show thing has been very underwhelming for me. Games industry still feels like it's struggling to adapt and innovate. I don't like on being down on everything but there just... Hasn't been very much excitement for me, at all. We've got:

  • Shit I've already played coming to other platforms
  • Shit I wanna play but won't be out until 2022 is arguably over
  • Shit with either a vague 2023 date or no date at all

Anything else is covered under the "not interested" umbrella.

Just give me Metroid and I'll be at peace, Nintendo. You're my last hope for an exciting gaming year.

I walked in excited, but I was fairly underwhelmed with Microsoft’s show so this wouldn’t be hard to top for me. There were five games/announcements that were interesting for me, but they all had an asterisk attached that made me not as interested as I might’ve been.

If Splatoon 3 gets a cool new mode or Bayonetta gets a good trailer those alone could do it. One cool new game announcement would do it for me too.

Like, the lack of transparency from Atlus is infuriating at this point. This particular announcement doesn’t make me excited to buy an Xbox or Gamepass to play Persona, it just pisses me off. Persona as a series just has such a history of being unwilling to be ported so you’d think Atlus would know to announce this in a exciting way that doesn’t piss off as many people.

I assume making people disappointed is not the goal for Microsoft or Atlus during these presentations, but who knows maybe it is. It’s working.

Praying for a Direct to save me.

Persona on Switch would be cool, but at the same time, I've put over 200 hours into P5 between the original and Royal

I don't think I have it in me to go in for thirds, and it's like my favorite game

I wouldn't put blame on Atlus. Sometimes it is just a matter of marketing & deals they may have made that impact the timing of other platform reveals.

New Fire Emblem in late 2022 or early 2023; Bayonetta 3 anytime between late August and the end of the year; another EPD title if Zelda isn't out in the current fiscal year (c'mon DK); if Zelda is on track for the fiscal year, I'd like to see them announce something big from EPD for 2023 more generally (I don't mind the odd big announcement being further out); Mario + Rabbids 2 still making this year. Keep up the franchise/genre variety, basically, and show that 2023 is more than just hanging on for Zelda (which I'm sure it will be). Switch is in an interesting spot right now whereby I think they would benefit from tipping slightly more of their hand for 2023; especially because there's going to be a lot of talk about the system potentially being replaced. Cross-gen software makes that 'replacement' fear pretty moot, in that it should guarantee a stable software slate as second-generation hardware comes to market potentially in the next 18 months; but we all know how gaming discourse can go and how easily pessimistic narratives can settle in. I'd like to see Nintendo do what they did in early 2021, when they were willing to show some longer-term exclusives for Switch like Triangle Strategy and notably Splatoon 3 (I get this was about the hiring drive but still, it flagged Nintendo's commitment to the platform).

Nintendo have two big crowd pleasers coming already by Christmas and they've had a strong first half of the year, especially if we count up to the end of July. Make it 2019 version 2 by crowding out the last months of the year with a couple of big EPD titles, killer exclusives from partners and subsidiaries, and something nobody expects.

edit - this turned more into 'what I'd like to see from the Direct' and less 'what Nintendo need to do to beat Microsoft'.

Like getting people to subscribe to Gamepass in anticipation for P5R this year in the few weeks before other platforms are revealed?

I suppose that makes sense. Still feels bad though. Oh well, it’s just video games I guess.

Alright. For those who watched Microsoft’s presentation. What would Nintendo have to show for their direct to be better for you?
A few things. Hard to list what but there isn't a single game announcement that would do it. Microsoft had some good announcements for me. I guess a 3D Mario game would be close but that's just my Nintendo fanboyism talking lol.

I haven't watched it, but from what I've seen and read it seems to have been a good presentation overall. More varied than 2021, which felt like 90% fps.
I'll probably watch it with reactions.
