Pre-Release The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Pre-Release Discussion Thread

That would probably take some time :/. In a way, Astor filled their possible role in Age of Calamity and Nintendo probably wouldn't want to do that in a main game so quickly after it is used in a "spin-off". Though considering the cave where Ganondorf's corpse is seems to have engravings of his past (the one Zelda lights up in the teaser seems like OoT Phantom Ganon or a Ganondorf with the Trident of Darkness). So they could potentially appear as part of those engravings showing Ganondorf's past.
does Nintendo even own Astor?

Can you smell it? A new trailer is very near. Gotta love this hype and anticipation for the full reveal of a new Zelda game!

Let‘s share our hype stories. When was the first time you got caught up in the hype train? For me, it was E3 2011 with the info blowout for Skyward Sword. Do you remember the orchestra? That was insane.

I was hype the moment that first trailer dropped, I tried deciphering the weird messages and that got kinda out of control. They did an awesome job with the atmosphere that trailer really gave me the chills.

I have to admit that the hype flattened somewhat because of the long time between news tidbits so I hope there will be more at the next Direct.

...Cut of the Darknut

I’m watching Arlo’s video. Just more pessimism and worry. It’s like damn dude chill out already. The way he starts out the first minute of his BotW 2 discussion is hilarious. “A lot of people seem to get the wrong idea when I seem to be worried about something” as he continues with another discussion of worrying about BotW 2….lol

Geez this dude goes on about how Elden Ring brought his hype to an all time low for BotW 2. I’ve never had a game do that for me.

Oh lord he finally goes into Nintendo sometimes listening to people and sometimes just want to put their fingers in their ears lmao.

I mean, i get a lot of his points. im not in his position, im not as pessimistic, since there was not much since BotW that did it better (and i cant play elden rind, no platform)

I have some worries (aftere 5 years im getting to the point where i've seen enough of that artstyle and would like a change, so it will be harder to wow me, especially with them being limited by the switch, and some more), but in the end this game will at least be great. Will it have a similar inpact to BotW1? dont know, probably not, dont care.

But my hype IS on an all time low, the last trailer was just not "it" for me, pacing, how "dlc" like if tellt,
how they tried to not show the real changes...And the atmosphere was way behind the first teaser.

So now its behind Silksong instead of in front of silksong on my hype schale =P

Haven't seen the Arlo video but I'll agree that the last trailer was underwhelming. But at the same time, I have faith. They have something up their sleeve that they're just not showing yet and I can't wait to find out what it is.

I mean the last trailer was just meant to be a a teaser to tie people over. If Nintendo didn't show anything, people would have complained. They are obviously saving the bulk of the gameplay, official title, new stuff for closer to release.

Shure. And the initial scenes make it clear. there was no long planing or big budget. Its the step back to the first one , that was more deliberate.
To me it felt like the moment they realised they will push the game back a lot, they decided to do a "tie over" trailer, and needed to make one, and not use the one they planed to initially.

I don't think there was another trailer planned for that E3. That was probably the only trailer. They would have known well in advance, long before E3, that the game wasn't coming out that year and probably not till at least late 2022. The first trailer was just to gives hints about the narrative. The second trailer was meant to show off some of the new gameplay mechanics and concepts while not divulging a whole lot. You probably think the first trailer is higher quality and higher budget because it shows off more story stuff. The second trailer is more focused on actual gameplay, not so much the story. They probably don't want to show off more of the story until the big title unveil trailer.

Any concern seems premature considering how little we know about the game. I will agree that the last E3 trailer was underwhelming though, almost felt like they were obligated to show something and threw it together.

One think I'd be happy to see in the sequel is a well which has a secret at the bottom. BOTW had so many wells and they were all filled in!

Here's a way Nintendo can upend the Zelda formula just like they did with Breath of the Wild. Zelda gets a new outfit...but it's red. And Ganondorf's new outfit is green.

And...Zelda is the name of the character formerly known as Link.

I see no reason for concern. Marketing has been botched a bit (thanks 2020-2021!), but as soon as a meaty trailer drops I'm back on board.

Until that time though, the art is to stay distracted xD.

Also, I'm not at all concerned about the quality of the game itself after the SS - ALBW - BOTW trio of increasing excellence.

I never really understood the worry for the graphics of BotW2, if anybody should be concerned for that you'd think a company like that would know when to worry. Playing BotW feels fine, why wouldn't 2 feel exactly the same if not better?

Don't get dragged into negative hype that puts the focus on all the wrong things right now because there's just not much to go on, it's been a long wait but just hang on for a while.

It’s tiring having to repeat over and over Covid existed!

The Legend of Zelda: A Hero Through Time is my guess on the title of the game.

I just want some cool caves to explore, traditional dungeons, more variety in enemies and bosses, and for it to be part of the official timeline.

And it’s an absolute long shot, but I’d love to be able to just restore all of Hyrule to its former glory. Think of BoTW’s Terry Town and Xenoblade Chronicle’s Colony 6, but it covers all of Hyrule.

My main takeaways are:
  • If not already, then soon Arlo will categorise BOTW like Super Mario 64, important rather than great. I got shat upon by this forum for suggesting it could need defending in any way but its legacy is heading in that direction much to my chagrin. It's not just the "vocal minority".
  • For Arlo and others like Andy Spitieri, the anticipation of the game is just as important as the game itself to overall experience. I of course don't give a shit, just give me the game. But I do find it frustrating when these characters seem to be saying that despite the quality of the game, they won't really properly give it a chance.
  • He's very quick to make assumptions that it will just be the same map with some sky islands. He's really low-balling the probability there's a lot more to it than has been revealed so far.
  • How long until Arlo stops being a Nintendo guy? He doesn't really seem to like much about it these days. He's gone off Zelda. His reception of Mario is hit and miss because he only likes the "sandbox" games. He hates Paper Mario. There's Pikmin, but that's not a regular thing. And now he doesn't like the Switch itself.

Someone crossbred Arlo with resetera.

Went through half the video not really understanding what he was getting at until I realized it was yet another Elden Ring video. This is getting boring.

Arlo is trying to reverse engeneer a whole debate from a simple fact: he likes ER and his new Xbox more than Zelda and his Switch. It's fine, but the fact that he got a whole video out of it make me see it in a cynical way. He has a sponsorship partner he has to honor and needs a video around it, preferably gently controversial for maximum views.

I agree with the last three points but don't understand where the first one comes from at all. Just because Arlo likes another game better?

I'm usually Team Arlo but, yeah, that was.. odd. All of his concerns are based around an image he has constructed in his head of what this game will be. And I don't think the game is likely to be what he fears it is. The assumption he's making ignores the entire history of the franchise.
As does his "troubled development" thing. All the 3D games had troubled developments and upended teatables. Breath of the Wild in particular! These are Nintendo's most ambitious games.

Aside, though, I think Mario 64/Breath of the Wild is a very good comparison, actually, and tbh I don't think the general opinion of the former is that it's "important and not great"? I think it's regarded as both, with a few niggles like the camera and controls. It has endured.

Really couldn’t disagree more with arlos video.

Mini dungeons and weapon breaking are flaws now? I agree some of the early weapons broke a little fast, but there were weapons everywhere. It wasn’t a big deal.

And little mini dungeons everywhere in the world was really what made the exploration so much fun. It was the best feature of the game. They could have been more varied, and I hope they fix that in the sequel, but the concept itself is brilliant.

And about the 6 years, I’m sure Covid had a lot to do with that. Also I’m sure it wasn’t in full scale development all that time. And the game will be great in the end.

It's a bit stupid to make a video like this when there's potentially 2 weeks before we actually learn substantial details about the game, but Arlo does bring up a few good points.

The sky islands trailer we got last E3 was incredibly mediocre, it seemed to indicate that the new game would be BotW 1.5 rather then a full fledged sequel. If they wanted to show us that reusing the map would be interesting, then they totally failed. It's kind of crazy that so many people's hopes are banking on the idea that the trailer is misleading or shows an incomplete game (me included). It's no wonder that he feels like the game will just be a retread of the first game, because there is currently 0 evidence that shows it won't be.

I think the comparison to Elden Ring is fair as far as open world design goes, ER is the new gold standard of open world design as far as I'm concerned. It's also highly unlikely that BotW 2 will borrow things from Elden Ring like Elden Ring borrowed from the first BotW, because the design of BotW 2 was most likely finalized far before Elden Ring was released.

In the end it's just the type of video that Youtubers do to fill out their schedule, so don't think too much about it.

This gives me the same vibe like the "there are no npcs/towns" or "just empty fields" discussion. And lol at bad graphics. People either just like to be concerned or to complain.

It is to early to tell how well the game will be received anyway with what little information we have.

Make that A Link Through Time and you‘re golden!

I sincerely don’t get the apprehension over this game (Sure, I understand what it’s born out of: the wait). I think people need to stop projecting what they want the game to be. It’s very probably gonna be yet another contender for best game ever made. Relax.

Side note: if you’re still complaining about BOTW’s weapon durability in 2022, I’m sorry, but you’ve played too many RPGs and they successfully hijacked your brain into thinking that grinding 2 hours for a cool-looking spear with +10% elemental damage is more fun than slamming a spear in an enemy’s face with gyro controls. BOTW had flaws, weapon durability was NOT one of them.

And Arlo goes on about Nintendo can listen and then there’s times they put their fingers in their ears. Why would you say that for Zelda. This group is known for listening to the fanbase. Hello that’s why we got BotW from Skyward Sword! Hello that’s why we got Twilight Princess from Wind Waker! He just rambles on and has this damn issue with Nintendo because of Paper Mario.

Some people say say that dev time is a combination between scope creep and pandemic slowing development down, and sometimes, there's a bit of back and forth on the issue. I was thinking about it, and made a sort of theoretical calendar.

Back half of 2017: Pre-production.
Beginning of 2018: Entering production.
All of 2018: Everything going according to plan.
First half of 2019: Coming along well, well enough to announce it.
Second half of 2019: Gearing up for a late 2020 release.
Beginning of 2020: Pandemic hits, development slows down, delayed internally out of 2020 to who-knows-when.
All of 2020: Development cotinuing, but slowly so.
End of 2020: Scope creep. Aiming for 2022.
First half of 2021: Proceeding as planned, under circumstances at least.
Back half of 2021: More scope creep. Decision made to delay to spring 2023.
All of 2022: Supposedly devoted to polish and finishing touches.

If anything the Zelda team listen too much! I hope they heard NONE of the negative feedback for Breath of the Wild!!!!
