Pre-Release Splatoon 3 — Pre-release Discussion Thread

Actually because they had to switch the dates they needed to announce this before a “E3” direct.

This is September 9th. I’ll guess Bayonetta 3 is probably late September

Map looks good layout-wise, but could stand to be less narrow and get a few more pieces of cover.

They knew why they were highlighting charger gameplay and ranged specials.

Looking forward to it, but secretly hoping there's something that will grab me because it looks like Splatoon 2 with more weapons. Sort of.

Cool to see the Octo Expansion getting added to NSO. Will definitely play that now. Heard lots of good stuff about it.

the xenoblade swap is real!

I really want to see what the single player is like. that will determine if I buy this or not

So good. The mobility in this looks wild. All the new specials look super promising too. September was later than I expected, but thankfully I will have all the games I can handle (and then some!) in the meantime.

Octo DLC added to NSO expansion also

Yoooooo! That's fresh as the Fuck on Jelfonzo's shirt. At this rate I'll be rewarded for never buying the Breath of the Wild DLC either when that one gets packaged into NSO+ in the final month's of BOTW2's pre-release promotional campaign.

That is some sexy box art right there.

I wonder if there is an amiibo announcement pending?

I have over 200 hours in Splatoon 2 and i can definitely say that this look better graphics-wise than Splat2, they really learned to profit maximum from Tegra X1.

I know they played it less hectic to show off the abilities, which do look cool, but the Turf War video felt a lot slower than normal Splatoon 2 :/ I’m sure it will be 100% fine when playing it and I’ll be there day 1, but I really feel they are holding something back and I can’t wait to see it!

Technically not delayed since it's still in summer, but they definitely swapped it with Xenoblade.

I'n hype as fuck!

Looks like they have added customizable name plates and also added medals that you can earn in matches. Both good additions that make things feel more rewarding.

The specials look so much better than Splatoon 2. Fuck that nonsense about needing teamwork to use specials, because most specials were really useless because teams suck in solo queue.

It looks like a lot of the styles of Splatoon 1 specials are back.

You have a inkzooka like thing
A killer whale
A bubbler type machine

Plus some great new additions like the vaccum and Spiderman.

Oh I was ready for a July release... Good news anyway, I was just talking about it with my son, wondering if we'd need to take our Splatoon setup to vacation, problem solved.

And there it is. Xenoblade gets moved up, and Splatoon fills the September slot. Still "summer" but pretty late into it. Alas. Still, it's nice to see a date so soon after Xenoblade, though given all the labor complaint allegations, the news seems like it's there to redirect attention to good press, even if that's not actually the case. Company gonna company, I guess.

For the announcement trailer itself, that...sure was a Splatoon match. I'm a fan of the series but I can't tell you much that differentiates this mechanically from 2. The spawning system is different, we got new weapons and specials, that's a new map, but it looks...well, like Splatoon. The new weapons and faster paced specials seem to be doing a lot of the carrying, given the excitement here, so that's good. Least a September date gives plenty of time for a deep dive in the future.

This looks so good.
I know some people will be thinking it’s just more Splatoon but I really don’t see the issue of it being Splatoon with new weapons, specials, maps and a new campaign. Especially when the new specials all look pretty dope

Ah so Xenoblade and Splatoon did essentially swap places. Whether this was to spruce up Splatoon more or to better space their winter release schedule I'll guess we'll never know.

Looks very good and the boxart is very nice. Kinda had my fill with Splatoon for now mind, might pick it up in the future when I get that shooter itch.

This will be a nice birthday present to myself. I was originally thinking of skipping this because I don't stick with the multiplayer for more than a month or two, but if I can drop $60 on Kirby for a short and sweet single-player campaign, I can totally justify picking this up this primarily for the single-player campaign (and hopefully we get an Octo Expansion equivalent DLC).

Man, what's with Nintendo and these awful and lame Splatoon 3 trailers. The salmon run one was also awful.
Are they trying to kill the hype, smh.

Looks like they made chargers even more visible than before. Probably to encourage using the charge storing and more strategy with e.g. the shield bubble, but also hopefully because they've made chargers more powerful now and the visibility helps to balance them

This continues to feel like Splatoon 2: Part 2. I'm sure they still have some cards up their sleeve (for example, we've almost seen nothing of the single-player), but at this point, I wonder why they are continuing this drip-feed strategy with the trailers. This game needs a big Splatoon Direct detailing everything new the game has to offer.

Also, gotta say, the cover art and the official renders in general look fantastic. Well lit and oozing with detail.

Interesting precedent to include a preexisting DLC

It's to boost Expansion Pack subscribers. I immediately got on because of Animal Crossing, but knowing that more DLC for games I own may come afterwards, makes me want to keep it.

Looks cool. The new sup weapons, the new ults with a motherfucking zipline and a Spiderdemon.
The name banner and how you performed during the match and (I think) bonus EXP for that.
Splatoon 2 was already a big leap in terms of presentation and style and 3 is going even further.

Now I just hope that the netcode is not a mess like in 2 with Superbullets and warping enemies that take 10 hits
in every session, because otherwise I am out.
Oh and make Turf War reanked already or let me play it in pre-made teams in casual.

Nintendo and its close partners are kicking ass in 2022: pokemon, mario strikers, mario rabbit, splatoon, xeno 3, switch sports, bayonetta 3, kirby

hell, for me, Splatoon 2 was Splatoon 1 Part 2. I really hope the single player is meaty out the box

This and MHR Sunbreak will be my only day 1 purchases this year. So ready for this!

The marketing for this game is weird though. It's catered towards existing fans of the series. All the gameplay trailers don't do a good job of selling the game to new potential players.
Also as a huge Splatoon fan, this still doesn't seem like a big step forward in the series. I hope they'll show new gameplay mechanics and game modes.

So like, are they using Twitter direct to distract from the bad PR? What is going on
They have an investor meeting in a couple weeks and they want to establish release dates due to the swap, no need for conspiracy theories imo

I feel the same way. I've seen so many people say it's just more splatoon and could just be added to 2, but really what do you expect in a splatoon sequel?
  • New Campaign (which looks more expansive from our very brief glance at it)
  • New Maps
  • New Specials
  • New Weapon Types
  • New Aspects of Salmon Run (Super Salmonid + Throwing eggs is going to be a game changer)
  • It's likely there will be some new mode (maybe new ranked mode)
Seems like more than enough to justify a sequel, especially for multiplayer focused games like this.

Cool boxart. I would have preferred this in July but September is fine. I'll be there day 1.

In comparison to the Salmon Rush 2 trailer, this Turf War video is much more successful at showing off how Splatoon 3 differs from its predecessor. Tossable eggs won't affect 90% of random online groups. New mobility, specials, map and weapons all change how matches will play out.

But there is one question all of the advertising has yet to answer: What is the difference between "Overall Splatter" and "Enemy Splatter"???
