StarTopic Metroid Dread |ST| The Chozon One

The final boss is so well designed. What can appear daunting initially ends up being pretty straightforward if you take the time to learn it's patterns. I went from getting destroyed in seconds to finishing with full health after some tries

The endgame shinespark puzzles alone are worth the $60, personally

This game is incredible. It just beat out New Pokemon Snap as my GOTY, and I'm still working on the final boss.

In fact, the final boss is so fucking hard that I'm running around and 100% the rest of the game before going back and beating it.

The Screw Attack is a dream for navigation. Same with unlocking the final teleportal and being able to transport between any of them.

This has been my first ever Metroid game. How do the others compare?

Gameplay wise Dread is the best of the entire 2D franchise by a mile, even in the Metroidvania genre it's second to none.

Level design i thought Super Metroid or Zero Mission were one step above, but after seeing how incredible is sequence break in dread without glitches, i think it's on the same level.

If you want to have a blast, play Super Metroid and Zero Mission, Fusion and Samus Returns are one or two step lower than those.

And then, you have the entire Prime saga, which is incredible, but those are very different games.

I've been busy with work so I haven't made as much progress as I would like. The last upgrade I found was the
Pulse Radar
so I took that as my cue to go back to previous areas and search them for items I missed. That was basically my entire session last night. I solved some pretty tricky speed booster/shinespark puzzles and I just feel like I'm getting a better handle on the world layout and the nuances with Samus' movement. Gonna try and make some actual progress tonight. Still really enjoying it, it's basically all I can think about at work. Even the "unmemorable" music is stuck in my head lol.

The purple emmi fight is kinda unfair? There’s no room to move
If you're talking about when you actually confront it

You have to make room

You can blow up some blocks to get to the level above where the launcher spits you at, which gives you enough room to line up your shots

If you're talking about when you actually confront it

You have to make room
obviously you have to push the wide beam block, but then there’s one of those red exploding fleshy things that I assume you need the power bomb to actually hit. After the wide beam block I still don’t seem to have enough room to jump over the emmi

Edit I got it

Wait... what (to that second spoiler)??

I 100%ed it and I did not know that, or know how to do that.

IIRC there should be some other breakable blocks in the area that help you make more room.

Hell yeah, I unlocked some late-game teleportal and I got a little message that indicated that they all can now transport to one another.
I'm working on 100%ing it now, and god damn it would be so much harder to do so without knowing this.

My condolences...

If I may ask, what were the hardest parts when you were going around 100%ing everything? The only shinespark puzzle I've had to look up how to do was one of the Burenia ones, because I didn't know you could re-charge your Speed Boost by shinesparking into a slope...

I'm still processing my feelings on Dread, but I honestly think it's in the running for the best 2D Metroid.

As for the rest, Super is still a masterpiece, though later entries refined the controls a fair amount. Fusion and Zero Mission are also great. Both Samus Returns and the original Metroid 2 are pretty flawed but still probably worth playing (though you might want a map for the latter). The original version of Metroid 1 honestly has aged pretty badly, and is probably only really worth revisiting as a historical curiosity.

If you want to know about Metroid Prime, the main Trilogy is all varying levels of great, though 3 doesn't feel super Metroid-y at times. Prime is a bit slower paced overall, though. You're not going to be running through rooms at a million miles an hour like tends to happen with the 2D games towards the end. The handheld spin-offs can be skipped, though, except Prime Pinball if you're into that sort of thing.

I must not have been paying attention for that message I guess.

Hardest part for me was the same as you, though I didn't actively look it up but rather saw a clip of someone else doing it randomly on Twitter.

I did have to look up one missile upgrade because I for some reason didn't see it on the map, neither the upgrade nor the flashing room showed up for some reason.

I also spent a while on one shinespark that was entirely unnecessary and feel very stupid about it, I'll post a video of that in a bit.

Okay, I really love the game so far, but fighting two enemies at once is bullshit.
I really hope the reward will be worth the frustration.
You should have the storm missiles by now, right? Just be aware that you can charge that up then while you're not stationary aiming, and can aim it on the run.

Thank you! I didn't know that. I doubt it's enough to beat them, but this is very helpful.

I think there's a fight with two Robot Chozo Warriors before you get the Storm Missile.... at least I remember one fight happening before I got them.

@Lichtsang yeah using the Storm Missile makes that fight waaaay more manageable. The first two encounters with that enemy were the hardest (and my favorite) fights in the game.

I'm just not capable of fighting multiple bosses in any challenging game. That's the reason I dropped Dark Souls 2.

No, it's
the one against a duo of Chozo
I just can't deal with it at all. I hate it.
I honestly think that might be the hardest fight in the game. Or at least I struggled with it more than the final boss. Though I'm a sucker for hard fights like that so it was also probably my favorite fight in the game.

Just keep moving and use the storm missiles like others mentioned. You also have enough room to store a shinespark if you start speedboosting before you enter the room, and that can take off a huge chunk of their health if you can land it

I did it! Once the weak one was down it was easy. I just hate this kind of boss battles so much that I sabotage myself mentally during it.

There's a second optional fight at one point I think, which is made much, much, much easier by a certain late game upgrade that takes them out in 1 hit. I don't think you can do that one before the storm missile though.

Something I found during my current playthrough:

So you guys know how Escue (the elecrified beetle) can be a pain in the butt to fight? Sequence breaking to get early Gravity Suit trivialises it entirely. After getting Gravity Suit, you can not leave frozen Artaria/Cataris until you beat the Experiment (which is now earlier than it used to be). But then you get to go back to Artaria and pick up Screw Attack. Screw Attack feels weird to have without Space Jump. Anyway, Screw Attack melts Escue without it ever getting the chance to damage you, which is great.

Boss fights become much easier when you get the stormer missiles, including uh, multiples, shall we say. Keep that finger locked on the R button lmao

Done with the game now. Took me about 9:45 hours on the timer, guess it‘s more like 15 hours in real time. Items around 50%. Going back to 100% it. It really was an amazing ride. Probably GOTY. You know when you finish a really good game and it leaves you somewhat empty knowing it’s over? Thank you MercurySteam and Nintendo for this amazing experience.

I really love the sequence-breaking in this game. It's amazing. True to the series.

I’m so close to the end now. I can’t wait to see what all the fuss is about with this boss.

Debating wether I should finish my hard mode run with the 50ish % items I currently have or do another 100% one. I really like doing a victory lap.

Plus, I'm kind of scared shitless to go into the final boss fight with my current E-Tank count, ngl.

You can cheese them in the event you encouter them again.. if you sit on one of the platforms pushed against the wall one of the robo chozo dudes will sit on the platform above and shoot and the other will stand next to you and melee.. Just juke the big red melee attacks from the one standing next to you and wait for it to do the parry-able one while fitting some missile shots in between.

Sounds more complicated than it is but it should make sense if you give it a shot. I found it to be much more of a consistent way of dealing with those things than trying to zip around and dodge all of their stuff.

I drew you a picture of the spot I'm talking about lol.

god damn this game is hard! i'm on the escue boss fight and it ruined me last night. had to turn it off and go to bed. i did not expect this game to get so tough.

I have been blowing through it though. there hasn't been a point where i've been lost (the only time i didnt know where to go i stumbled directly into the correct path) i've just been barreling forward without doing any backtracking or secret hunting.

wondering if i should backtrack for some power ups and/or try to sequence break as some have been talking about (although the latter would be less fun cause i'd have to look it up)

Soooo hard mode is hard. Those tiny little fish guys that travel in extremely slow swarms killed me.

Does anybody know how to open the Storm Missile box in Dairon? I can't figure it out for the life of me.

It looks like it requires 6 missiles but I can only find and hit 5. Has anybody else opened this door yet?

Edit: Nevermind, I got it. Turns out I wasn't hitting all 5 quickly enough, I guess!

I can confirm the reward is not worth the frustration.

That said I will also say it’s actually not that frustrating if you abuse the flash shift. Use that to bait them on higher levels, then shift to the lower ones, position yourself to aim your storm missile, shoot as soon as one moves in, then shift back away to the higher level. Repeat.

Flash shift in general is extremely helpful for most boss fights.

Thank you! I beat them already, but you are right. And they aren't actually as bad as I feared. It was just my own dislike for multi-boss fights that hindered me really.

Yeah lol, psychologically I just treated it not as two bosses but just as two powerful enemies. I dunno why but that helped me manage it better lol

honestly i just love how badass this game makes samus feel again after other m tried to detroy her character she has no fear in this game.

Game has gotten quite tough, everything after that mid-game event is quite hard.

Even the EMMI encounters got tougher. The one in Ferenia is tough as hell to avoid, still haven't gotten the chance to kill it.

Been thinking more about the ending and there's one thing I didn't quite think made complete sense but I think I've got a theory for it.

So the X Parasite Quiet Robe showing up and just giving himself up to Samus seemed pretty odd to me. Going back to Fusion's intro though, it seemingly takes much longer for an X to take over more sentient beings considering Samus was able to finish her mission on SR388 and the Galactic Federation had enough time to create a vaccine before she was completely infected. So I'm thinking rather than Quiet Robe somehow managing to take control from the X, or the X being influenced by his memories, that he instead had essentially been temporarily revived by it and by the end had still not fully succumb to its infeection.

I'm probably completely wrong here but it does make a little bit more sense to me.

Corpius done on hard mode. Took one try, I forgot how easy the early bosses were!

My major question is:

Why absorbing that X managed to remove/deactivate her new Metroid powers. Metroids eat X's, not the other way around.

as i was getting bombarded by difficult enemy encounters again and again, it occurred to me that they seem to have taken influence from hollow knight as well.

the fact that i even thought that, to me indicates mercury steam was really self reflective on the genre here, and was able to see what works elsewhere without being insular. while still bringing new things to the table, and staying true to the metroid legacy.

really sublime work
