I would disagree with a few of these. Some were just natural progressions and are still occurring today. You didn’t mentioned the first console Fire Emblem but mentioned Prime which was just a take of Metroid in 3D. No different then Kirby right now too

TTYD is pretty tamed compared Super Paper Mario went into insanity territory.

Zelda still continue to experiment greatly after Wind Waker. Art style still changing

Mario too, you went to space later on. Then a 3D multiplayer game and finally possesseing objects and real humans in Mario.

But while folks still continue to point fingers at Paper Mario and it’s characters, the reality seems to be that games were able to be created at a faster pace then today thus leading to more opportunities to work on different titles. Some IPs that are just seen not worth returning. Too much time and risk nowadays.

I guess Prime feels a little more "out there" than something like Kirby and the Forgotten Land because of its FPS perspective. A lot of people did freak out when they saw Prime for the first time and thought they were turning Metroid into some first person shooter.

I guess you're right about Zelda and Mario, but I'd say even though TTYD obviously isn't as out there as SPM was, it's still pretty wild in comparison to PM today. There's a boss with a foot fetish for crying out loud lol

For better AND for worse, the GCN was Nintendo and their IPs at their most wildest and experimental.

  • Mario 64 (one of the most important games ever made)'s direct followup had Mario straddled with a water gun and stuck on a tropical island resort
  • Paper Mario...TTYD is pretty out there, yeah.
  • Metroid Prime went 3D by turning into a FPS
  • Zelda became a kiddy cel-shaded cartoon set on the ocean
  • Star Fox went on-foot to fight dinosaurs and bug robot Borg wannabes, and introduced new weird characters like a blue titty fox and a panther who sounded like he came out of a spanish softcore porn flick
  • Mario Kart had two racers at once
  • Donkey Kong became a weird platform beat-em-up controlled by using freaking bongos, and the classic Rare cast were replaced by weird new enemies like a chicken corn monstrosity
  • Custom Robo finally got a western release and had a much more darker and gritty aesthetic in comparison to its N64 counterparts
  • Weird new IPs like Geist, Eternal Darkness, etc
I could go on. Many of these are stuff that probably wouldn't be approved by Nintendo of today, as we saw what happened with the story/characters of Paper Mario over the years.

In that sense I guess it's not so hard to see why the GCN library is so love it or hate it. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of light, it was the season of darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair.
Luigi’s Mansion as well, that’s one of the biggest examples. They made an action-adventure “horror” game concept that didn’t resemble Mario games at all, put Luigi in it, and made it a launch title.

In regards to Sunshine, it's kinda like DK Jungle Beat in that it eschews a lot of the old classic iconography one would expect from a Mario game in favour of just plain weird shit. Like, there's literally no goombas or traditional koopas to be seen anywhere, instead we have these weird things:

200px-SMS_Strollin_Stu_Artwork.png

200px-SMS_Snooza_Koopa_Artwork.jpg

And even the enemies that did come from previous games had really fruity looking new designs:

See this stuff is kinda what I mean. Yes, future Mario games like Galaxy and Odyssey certainly have their fair share of weird out there concepts, but to me, Sunshine was pretty much on a whole different level of weird. A mainline Mario game without goombas just feels unthinkable today.

it’s like boomer for cube

there are lots of dread meme instances of phrases akin, i.e. “consoomer,” as a catch-all light mockery

it seems like this one is explained a new way by a new person each month so I’m saying it’s my turn now

miss u @Raccoober

"Coober" is just making fun of certain Nintendo fans like Arlo that worship the GCN era
Cheers gang. Wow, I had no idea this was a thing and I’ve always had Nintendo consoles/handhelds since the 80s.

Lmao, first time I heard of the Coober-thing, wtf???

Even though I kinda agree with @DecoReturns that maybe some of it wasn't that revolutionary, in that I personally feel it's looking at those games through nostalgia fueled rose tinted glasses, one thing that NGC did absolutely nail, is the controller. Which is funny, because one of the criticisms back in the day was the odd button lay out and how it made some ports next to impoossible. Which I still to this day can't understand. The controller layout of tha Gamecube was literall perfection for me. The Prince of Persia games were made for this controller, as was Soul Calibur and other fighting games. I loved the analog triggers and the ergonomics were perfection to me.

also if anyone else is like “what would happen if Crash Bandicoot bosses were in isometric Dark Souls”

then play Death’s Door for a good fuckin’ time

two of the mid-game major boss fights so far have had very familiar attack patterns, but then elevated in really fantastic ways I will not get into

if what I said appeals to you at all please play this game it’s so good
This reminds me that I should really get back to Death's Door. I've played around 3h so far, but work got in the way, and I haven't really picked up my Switch since -- other than for the Kirby demo.
These first 3h were reaaally good, though. Next boss for me is the third (?) one/the one suggested as your first after the two intro bosses, i.e. the Witch, iirc.

GameCube was the first Nintendo home console I had so I love a lot about it. I just don't have a particular allegiance to it, or an affinity for it that's so strong that it reduces the quality of the Switch library for me. Personally I know that's down to how much I've enjoyed the portable systems. I had portable Nintendo before home Nintendo.

We have three different labels for Wii fans (Wiiners, Wiibs and Wiirdos) but for some reason people get a little touchy about coober.

Noobers
Soobers
Sixtyfoobers
Coobers
Woobers
WiiUbers
Swoobers
I just realized, since the "b" in "coobers" comes from "cube," shouldn't boomer+______ in these instances be

Noomers
Soomers
Sixtyfoomers
Coobers
Woomers
WiiUmers (Wiioomers)
Swoomers

this is all dumb and meant in good fun, I have absolutely nothing against anyone who stans any particular system, after all I'm a Dreamcast and WiiU fanatic for chrissakes

Ah, the GameCube. Not my first Nintendo home system, but the system of my early childhood. Don't think it's my favorite but it still has lots of memorable games that I want to go back to when I have less other games that I want to play. I have quite a backlog to get through (that I want to get to, mind you!), and Kirby's so soon.

I guess you're right about Zelda and Mario, but I'd say even though TTYD obviously isn't as out there as SPM was, it's still pretty wild in comparison to PM today. There's a boss with a foot fetish for crying out loud lol
You want wild in regards to TTYD? Look at all of Mario's female partners. Notice how they all either have a crush on Mario or think he's hot?

Yep. They gave Mario a harem. I was never the same after that day I realized that.

No disrespect to Goombella and Vivian, mind you. Great characters, Goombella being a particular favorite.

To be fair, the GameCube controller does lack buttons. If it had a second Z button and clickable sticks, then that would solve most of the issues.

...it would still have a terribly small and out of the way D-Pad, though. Even the Switch D-Pad, for all of its problems, is more usable thanks to size and placement alone.

I think that depends on how many other Operation Rainfall games you bought too

(High five fellow "I played Xenoblade for less than 10 hours" club member!)
Well, I followed Operation Rainfall but only got Xenoblade, so...I think I'm safe?? I'm not a Wiib????

(High five!)

Gamecube was my first console as a “responsible adult” so it has a special place in my heart, but at the same time my favorite Nintendo franchises were at their worst during this era, so overall it’s more of a bittersweet feeling.

If you played Xenoblade Chronicles on Wii back in 2010-2012 you are officially a Wiib. I think we can all agree on that.
What if I played the original Xenoblade in 2013 on a WiiU..?
What if, before the Switch, I owned more games for WiiU than any other system?

I bought Mario Tennis. I was hoping for Golf to go on sale but of course the one thing I really wanted doesn't go on sale when freaking Mario Kart did

PlayStation have a great start of the Year. Still got a few exclusives and 3rd parties that will do better here then Xbox. Probably will have a show later on too

Finally kicking into some gears, that’s cool. Only want a Ps5 to play Final Fantasy VII remake and inter grade. But won’t be able to get one for a long time at the rate they’re available.

Man, I want to share in the excitement of Elden Ring and I really do like the game, it's just that I can't shake off the feeling of "this is actually Dark Souls 4" including its systems and world. And there is nothing wrong with that (I love Dark Souls), but I do feel a lot of de ja vu and wished there would be more "new stuff" in this game if that makes sense?

Wow, didn't realize GT7 is out already! Man, if I knew I'd probably grab that today. Ah well, I can wait. I do want to have this on PS5, but it's be a while until I can get one.

Triangle Strategy is more of a niche Genre and coming into in a busier release so not much surprise.

Plus it doesn’t help that it wasn’t marketed as much days before it’s release as Nintendo went silent during that time.

Be interested to know how Triangle Strategy's opening figures compared to Bravely Default 2. I think it being a strategy RPG probably limits the audience versus Octopath. That being said, I'm sure it'll do fine.

I think that was a cool approach.

It's just too bad that a lot of Sunshine's enemies looks a bit weird and unpolished (the ghosts, in particular, are just awful).

Most people probably knew loads of stuff in this video already, but I didn't so BotW is blowing my mind once again lol

There’s a whole series of these and every single one of them blows my mind at least once, even 5 years later.

Yeah, I've seen more of these video's and they always keep surprising me. Seriously, in 20 years time we STILL hear new things about this game lol

You know you have watched too much anime when you instantly know Anna, the house attendant in Triangle Strategy, will be the stealth/ninja unit.

I need to fix some shit in my life apparently, because a gaming page on Facebook asked "What video game character's power would you like to have?" and I almost commented "Sonic's optimism."

that’s the one! slaps

and the next major boss? also slaps

I’m watching my partner play so idk what comes next, I’m only two bosses into my own playthrough

but the one you said and the one after that are very much the ones I’m talking about

Hey Fami! I have a code for 1200 Golden Acorns for Pokémon Cafe Remix, (I don’t play this, and ended up with a code). I am not sure if dlc codes are region locked (I’m in the US). I don’t have a need for it, and would like someone to have it who plays Pokemon Cafe Remix. :)

Been playing though Hoa this afternoon, what a nice little gem. It's not difficult by any means (you don't even take damage), but it's a very beautiful, relaxing game. The music is superb as well. It's on sale atm, highly recommend it!

Apologies in advance for this kind of pointless mini-rant

I was listening to the Steam Deck episode of "Brad and Will Made a Tech Pod" (I recommend it btw, fun show) where they had two reviewers on to discuss the Deck. At the end they were asked if they recommended it and one of them said "I'd like to play certain games on a handheld, and why would I want to play Hades on the Switch when it runs at 30 fps and Slay the Spire when it runs at 20".

This comment made me itch inside my brain lol. Correct me if I'm wrong but both those games run at 60 on the Switch. I don't see the point of exaggerating Switch performance vs. the Deck, it's especially disappointing when its a discussion hosted by tech enthusiasts for an audience of tech enthusiasts. There are other valid comparisons to be made like ergonomics or the Steam ecosystem, or if comparing games, then more intensive ports like Outer Worlds instead of two indies lol. It just muddies the discussion and paints an inaccurate picture of both devices.

Rant over, sorry. >.>
