The Off-Seer stuff is curious in that it seems like it might parallel parts of how XC1 works, particularly in the context of Taion's line "they're not your friends any more, they're his fuel."

Does anyone know how "off-seer" was localized in other languages?

In italian it's "tramandante" which pretty much translates to "the person who transfers, transports / the person who passes on" in english, which I guess it's a similar meaning.

So this game doesn’t really have a single main protagonist? It seems to be shared between Noah and Mio?
Yup, they said so in the bios we got before.
Noah: One of the protagonists of Xenoblade Chronicles 3 and a solider of Keves. Noah is also an “off-seer” who mourns for soldiers who’ve lost their lives on the battlefield.
Mio: The other protagonist of this story, Mio is a soldier of Agnus and an off-seer like Noah.

Another reference:
I was told that the sentence "Fighting in order to live or living to fight" is from xenosaga ep1 slogan.
gFJNoCL.jpg
I posted a tweet that highlighted this a while back, but keep in mind the quote is reversed for Xenoblade 3:

So apparently "Live to fight or fight to live" was the catchphrase for Xenosaga Episode 1. It's all connected!

You can also see the tagline for Xenoblade 3 on the Nintendo JP page:
生きるために戦う、戦うために生きる

So they listed 6 party members but I wonder if we'll get more. I believe Xenoblade 1 had 7 characters while Xenoblade 2 had 5 drivers (6 if you include the temp character). So the current 6 would fall in line with the average party amount but I don't recall either of the previous games revealing the full playable cast before release.

Maybe someone from Xenoblade 1 or 2 will join the party, maybe someone who wasn't playable previously like Tyrea or something.

It is "Wegweiser" in German (literal: sth./so. that/who shows the way). In relation to a person, I would translate it as "guide", which makes sense since off-seers are guiding spirits to the afterlife to my understanding.

There's no way they revealed the entire playable cast.

In fact,
I wouldn't be surprised if one of the revealed six dies early on.

if this were like the other games I would say yes but I'm not so sure here because there's going to be some kind of squad mechanic like the noponspecters

So purely based on the character's design and weapon, my guess for the current classes are:

Noah - Your big red sword user. Basically Shulk and Rex with Pyra
Mio- Dual melee fighter similar to Niah and Fiora
Lanz - Tank like Reyn
Eunie - The healer but because her weapon is a gun staff, it makes me think they will combine Melia's and Sharla's play style. However,....
Taion - Also magic user. Not sure how they'll different him with Eunie
Sena - Big hammer. Basically taking the role of Rikki

I don't think we have seen a Dunban archetype. There are of course a ton of different blades in Xenoblade 2 but there's too many for me to remember for me to make direct analogies to Xenoblade 3 off the top of my head. But from what we have seen, the six characters cover the same archetypes seen in Xenoblade 1, for the most part. Of course most of these character's probably won't play exactly the same as their previous games counterparts but I do think they will have similar roles.

Oh god, I hope not. I love all 6 of these guys so much and if any of them (especially Lanz, given Takahashi seems to have been sitting on a playable Machina for years) died it would kill me

Mio looks like more of a Dunban/Morag type than Nia. Nia was primarily a healer but its looking like Mio is a Dodge Tank like those two

If the Twin Rings work like they do in XC2, Mio would be a healer. Since Keves presumably has DPS/tank/healer in Noah/Lanz/Eunie, that would position the Agnus role triad as Taion/Sena/Mio.

It will be interesting to see how XC3 differentiates these characters combat-wise, especially if there will be more playable characters later in the game. XC2 had a relatively rigid conception of these roles, and I'm hoping XC3 has some characters who break that mold.

There are twin rings and hammers in XC2, so the expectations would be the former being a healer weapon, rather than a DPS like Fiora, and the later to be high STR high DEF tank, rather than a jack-of-all-trades with lots of HP like Riki.

Yeah, there's already Lanz, but they could have a very different balance for DMG/DEF/AGGRO.

But then again, in a series where in one game the rifle user heals more than the 2 staff-like users together and in the other you heal throwing balls, it's hard to make assumptions. I wouldn't be that surprised if Sena heals people by hammering them into the ground.

Would be nice if Nintendo put actual closed captions on the YouTube upload instead of the autogenerated ones because I probably misheard/misread the second quote, but I suppose not understanding anything through the accents is part of the mystique.
I'm happy I don't have this problem because German has official subtitles.

Thank you for your correction. Seeing people find this kind of easter eggs always makes me exicited for this game.
No problem. It's really cool that they're making clear references to all past Xeno games right from the start.

Is it weird to be unreasonably excited for that controllable boat? Because I totally am.
I'm really happy to see that and the zipline. It looks like they reassessed all travel options.

That’s the thing I’ve been the most excited about for what it means. I love it in Final Fantasy and makes me wonder how open is the world. How many secret places can we find traveling with a boat. And what other vehicles may be in the farm.

can xenoblade climb to persona levels?

Extremely unlikely with this game.

Given this appears to be a fairly by the numbers sequel in terms of presentation, and most likely game mechanics (I don't mean either of those as an insult!), as well as being presented as a direct story sequel to both 1 and 2, this game will probably not outperform Xenoblade 2, which was just over 2m last we got an update.

In order to outperform Xenoblade 2, it would have to be a significantly larger shake up of what people would expect from a game titled Xenoblade than it appears to be.

Persona 5's sales of around 3.2m is simply going to be out of range of Xenoblade 3, and that's not before we count the additional 1.8m copies of Persona 5 royal.

And that's fine.

I could see the legs being shorter than Xenoblade 2 (that game was still charting on JP eshop recently even before the Direct), but I think Xenoblade 3 might still have a shot at passing its lifetime sales if the game is well received and new players can still understand the story without needing to play 1 and 2. For more context on Xenoblade sales on the Switch:

Xenoblade Chronicles 2: 1.06m (Month 1) -> 2.05m (as of June 2020)

Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition: 1.32m (Month 1) -> 1.52m (as of March 2021)

If Xenoblade 3 opens at around 1.50m and has even half of Xenoblade 2's sales legs, I could see it at least matching Xenoblade 2's lifetime sales. I guess another question is if Xenoblade 3 will get major DLC support next year like Xenoblade 2 got in 2018.

(The Persona question is a whole other topic so I'm just focusing on Xenoblade 3 sales vs Xenoblade 2 sales)

Xenoblade 3 is presented as a distant future from both with an almost all new cast, world and story line. If so many people are fine playing Uncharted 4, Witcher 3 and other direct sequels without the previous games, a game like XC3 should be fine.

JRPG is a very frontloaded genre, so it benefits a lot from having an huge active player base on launch, base which now includes fans of other hardcore games like SMT/MH/FE. It will also benefit from a higher awareness the series got over the years (with DE announced in 2019 and Smash in 2021, we had news and Direct presence every year since Switch launch).

Finally, there are places where they could improve even if the graphics, mechanics and quality are very similar. XC2 had bad tutorials, low handheld resolution and some big annoyances at launch which soured a little the initial reception and WOM.

It’s actually 2.05m as of June 2020. I’d love to get new numbers… one day… :(

Typo >.>

(We should at least get December 2020 numbers in a few months since CESA's publication for 2020 sales figures is finally coming out this spring after getting delayed almost a year)
Yeah, I also hope Takahashi touches on it in the inevitable interviews leading up to XC3’s release.

XC2 was a very steady seller as of June 2020, so I’d really like to see where that game ended up.

It’s charted in various countries since and received renewed interest following the Smash announcement.

2.3/4m could be possible, which would be an incredible result for the series.

Nope, XC2 sold "badly" just because of Rex's clothes (jk, altough i'm not a fan of Rex's clothes in XC2).

I think it will sell more than Xenoblade DE, but will ultimately fall short of Xenoblade 2. It might exceed these expectations if it has great WoM and excellent reviews, though.

XC3 will be the best selling imo. They’ve already done a good job with the character designs. Nobody oversexualized and the main protagonists are liked going by their designs. This will, at least, talk to a bigger audience. The Switch is at 100 million install base helps.

Now, have to see the battle system.
