StarTopic Final Fantasy VII Rebirth |ST| "Don't fight here... you'll ruin the yellow paint!"

Just hit Chapter 7 and hit the Corel Region. Game hitting a good balance of more focused linear chapters in between the open areas. Definitely ready to explore some.

Red strutting his stuff in the Shinra uniform was so funny and made for a great mood whiplash afterwards, given how much more horrifying the Jenova set-up and fight is in this version.

I think overall.

I’m mixed on this game. I can see why it got the critical acclaim. But I think the direction they went with structuring the story/scenarios is disappointing. A lot of unnecessary padding, inconsistent tone (the original was like this too to be fair). Gameplay is fine like in remake but it’s easier now with the additions you get. Which isn’t bad per say.

Of course. Devs expressed they couldn’t do 7 on a single part cause of how big it is. But playing Rebirth and seeing them pad out a bunch of stuff. I think they could’ve done the first game up until Temple of the Ancients lol. Yeah I know about the dev trouble of Part 1 and this is just hindsight. Just feel there could’ve been a nice paced game between the two.

But I can see the ambition and can’t fault them for going where we are at. Plus an obvious project for fans of all things FFVII. I just think it would’ve been cooler (better? Who knows) if they made the remake for those who also haven’t played FFVII. Cause these 2 remakes don’t feel like that at all. and that reason kinda makes certain changes apparent and makes certain scenes worst off. I can list examples. But kinda want to make a thread about it in the future. Not to rag on the game, just cause it’s fun to discuss later.

In the end. I think Remake is a better game then Rebirth. (Might be in the minority here lol)

I accidentally hit reload from checkpoint after dying to Vincent, and now I have to the whole chapter over again...

Think I'm gonna finish up Infinite Wealth and then come back to this lol

Finished the game this morning. That was a hell of an ending.

Overall I love this game, a massive improvement over Remake (which I loved too). I will probably set it down for a day or two, but I'll definitely go back to finish up the protorelic quests and the world Intel stuff. Probably not gonna do hard mode though.

The open zones are pretty neat, I have 18 hours on the game but I'm only at chapter 4 because I really wanted to clear the first two zones. The level design of the zones are quite clever (so far). Great use of verticality and backgrounds to make the levels feel way bigger than they are, really reminiscent of what Monolith Soft does on Xenoblade.

I've finished two protorelic quests so far, and I'm not sure how to feel about them. I like how they put the cast in unique scenarios, but they also feel a bit too long. They seem important enough, though, so I'll keep doing them.

You know how you think about replaying a game, then you start to think about all of the shitty parts you have to go through again and you start to reconsider, even in games that you absolutely love? Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will be that on steroids. There's a lot of great moments that people will want to experience again. But there's a lot of terrible parts in this game, mostly to do with the plethora of mini games. The protorelic quest has some of the best character interactions in the game but some of the mini games are just fundamentally bad. Not good ideas that were implemented poorly. Some are bad at the conceptional level. It's a game of very high highs but some lows that just interrupt the experience.

I do have the urge for a replay as well, which I don't get too often with games this long. I'll probably wait for PS5 Pro though, also on the chance we end up getting DLC if plans changed with that.

Wrapped up the story of Chapter 10 tonight and the side quests and activities that open afterwards. I did all of the exploration and other activities the day prior and that was definitely my favorite zone since the layout is so interesting and unique.

I quickly got my Chocobo in Chapter 11 and called it there. Despite the zone being smaller, I’m intrigued by the Chocobo ability and looking forward to exploring it. That aside, it definitely feels like the end is in sight and I’m increasingly eager to see it through.

okay… hear me out

Man this combat is so good. I really hope they just keep this for future FF games even though I know they won't.

Fyi, "No Promises to Keep" is on streaming services now.

It's gonna end up being one of my most listened to songs this year lmao.

Implying Kingdom Hearts is a bad thing
As a huge Kingdom Hearts fan, I interpreted it as a chaotic element so powerful adding it can have consequences few can accurately predict lol. Personally love the KH elements in the FF7 Remake games from some of the feel of Cloud’s combos, minigames like the box bashing minigames, and some of the wilder elements like the Whispers (one of the final bosses in the first game felt ripped out of Kingdom Hearts in a way I loved).

Did all of Chapter 11 today and I’m stopping right at the start of Chapter 12. I really dug Chapter 11’s open world section even if it was the smallest of the bunch. Had a very cool Chocobo ability in it. Definitely see why people were down on the Cait Sith story section though the rad Vincent fight made up for it.

Gongaga Village theme - Classic JRPG sounding music

Gongaga Overworld theme - You can run. You can hide. The sounds of the children will haunt your every waking moment.

I finally just got the trophy for getting A rank on all the piano songs after trying 1 billion times on the "Two Feet" song. I am exhausted!

I finally got to experience the open world gameplay in chapter two last night and it’s goooood. I’m such a sucker for gathering crafting materials. It’s so satisfying.

The menus seem a little less readable compared to Remake’s menus. I think the background is too busy or something? Also the gap between pressing pause and the menu coming up is just a tad bit too long.

That was the only song I didn't at least A rank on my first try. Well, I didn't try the song you get from completing the other six on A rank yet.

the shadow blood queen was really hard, you can steamroll most people in this game if you’ve figured out a decent strat. for this one i had to really think about cards that would be enhanced when enemy and allied cards are enfeebled. then it was super satisfying to watch. have i mentioned how much i love that game?

Very glad I redid the Pirate shooting game before the patch went through. I do not understand at all why game developers think if I have the right stick double inverted (like Mario 64) I’d want my left stick to be double inverted in select cases. It makes no sense! Very worried about the chocobo thing mentioned in the patch notes could be along similar lines…

(For the supremely worst example, Gears of War inverts the roadie run if you have inversion on, but like why should my movement get flip flopped when I try to run??)

Edit: It is supremely dumb how they handle the chocobo.

They altered how only the Green Cosmo Canyon Chocobo controls. While I wasn’t a fan of the original diving being pushing down in a double invert set up, hitting left on your left stick would turn your chocobo left as it should. Now though turning left turns right 🫠 which would be fine/whatever except these controls exist both in the minigame and open world. That means you’ll be running along like normal, decide to jump off a cliff, and suddenly your controls are reversed. It stands out even more as poorly conceived because the Ocean Chocobo and any Chocobo in a race have normal left stick movement when they fly around. Who thought this was good???

I’m feeling extra bitter about this because it was perfect before the patch and now we have to hope for a second patch to fix it back…

Glad to see you're finally getting that Xenoblade experience. You'll be on train with us anime, open world games soon enough.

Just finished the Gold Saucer date scene (with Aerith). Completely speechless. That might have been the most incredible thing I've ever seen in gaming.

Me six chapters ago: "oh, this game only has 14 chapters, huh"

Me 55 hours in at Chapter 10: "wtf this game has 14 whole chapters"

Christ, this game is massive

nah mate i ain’t ever playing xenoblade

its part of my identity at this point

It's too late for you. Rebirth is a Xenoblade game but even more anime.

Besides, it's been a part of your identity all this time since I play Xenoblade and you and I are the same

Me a couple of days ago: "Ok this must be the last big area in the game"

Me today: " Oh well fuck me i guess"

This happened a couple of times so far, to be clear.

Has anyone found out how to customize the difficulty in Fort Condor with the new patch ?
I just got massively destroyed in the second part of the mini game. I even tried by going in the main game settings and set it to easy and it didn't change anything ; still got my ass handed to me.

Man this mini game sucks so much. I'd rather spend money like in the original version to buy units than this waste of time.

This was a thing in Remake as well but it's funny how blatant the game is about enemies targeting the player controller character. Like you look at in the distance and your ally and the enemy just staring each other down but as as soon as you take control, bam!, instant hit. You can use this to your advantage though at times. I basically stun locked enemies but quickly switching back in forth between characters. The enemy couldn't hit in because it kept changing the target.

I think you forget just how bad Fort Condor was in the original.

I hated Fort Condor in the Yuffie DLC. Is it the same game this time?
There are some changes that may make the experience a little different - I actually prefered the way it was set-up here in Rebirth over the INTERmission. You work from preset units so there is some reduction in decision-making to make if that wasn't your jam. Materia is replaced by hero units that act as more souped-up units that can be used once per battle after meeting summoning requirements. The UI is also much clearer than the DLC in that you know exactly what units are coming and on what lane. Units are also different, more so the enemy units you content with.

I thought Fort Condor in Rebirth was worse than the Yuffie DLC. I didn't think it was too difficult though, except for the final one. At that point, you're just memorizing when certain enemy units are replaced, reacting, failing, trying again, rinse, repeat. It doesn't feel like you're reacting strategically to the situation as it's happening. It's mostly trial and error. I never felt that my fort was under in any danger. It's beating the boss in the time limit that's the killer.

I've not yet gotten to playing the game (although I was basically way too curious so I looked up how some of it goes online XD). A little question I have. How many minigames are mandatory to get through the main story. I would hate to have to get through Queen's Blood and Fort Condor trials in particular to beat the game XD.
