Based on what we know I'd say:

Tears of the Kingdom
Resident Evil 4
Starfield
Spiderman 2
Street Fighter 6
Alan Wake 2 (I feel like this is being slept on in this thread)

I could also see a big indie game knocking Street Fighter or Alan Wake off but this year is also stacked for AAA so we'll see.

I'm not saying y'all are unreasonably hyped by the Starfield footage

But given how the popular sentiment around TOTK is "this is the game that Breath of the Wild was a proof of concept for," Starfield is goign to need to be maybe the strongest release of all time to sweep out from under Zelda this year

Starfield is going to be Skyrim-levels of hyped at release. It's already #1 on Steam and after that showcase people are frothing at the mouth to play it. It's going to review 90+

Idk about the overall aggregate winner, but at the TGA at least, I'd be shocked if Starfield didn't win

Oh! Oh, you know what we should have?

We should have a betting thread

Fallout 4 of all games won so many GOTY awards. Fallout 4 ! And it sucked !
Bethesda hype is something else among western gamers and critics, don't underestimate it.

I think Zelda is still gonna win, but honestly it might be a close call.

How I see things on June 12th, 2023-

Locks:
Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
Final Fantasy XVI
Starfield

Contenders:
Diablo IV
Street Fighter 6
Spider-Man 2
Resident Evil 4

Maybes:
Star Wars: Jedi Survivor
[Redacted]
Octopath Traveler 2
Dead Space
Hollow Knight: Silksong
Alan Wake 2
Armored Core VI

At this point, I think the maybes will have a very hard time making it to the top. This year is so stacked it is stupid.

What will be interesting will be the fighting game award. Which will win between SF6 and MK1 ?
Too bad that Tekken 8 isn't this year, it would have been crazy.

Checking last year's award for the category, they really awarded Multiversus over KoF15, uh.

Almost certainly SF6. MK1 would need to blow people away to have a shot, the campaign mode is huge for SF6’s popularity.

Yeah but Mortal Kombat's since the (previous) reboot has been popular for its single player mode, and it seems like MK1 will have a similar story mode to SF6.
I expect MK1 to have more single player content.

I think SF6 will end up being the best fighting game, but I could see MK1 winning the award if critics are overwhelmed by the single player content.

Look up for FFXVI, because if it has a big comeback for the saga, it might get the "official" GOTY award, which is nice after all this time.

I have a feeling that Zelda will not get the goty, too much iterative coming from BOTW, i think the result will be a fight between Starfield and FFXVI if both games deliver.

Me when I realize every waking moment RE4's chances to be nominated become slimmer and slimmer

I ain't saying it just because it's my profile pic, but I would be very shocked if it didn't get a nom given it's still sitting at 93 on MC. As far as currently released games, I think that and TotK are the only sure things right now.

as i always thought it will be between zelda and starfield.
yeah me too and rightfully so. Starfield is a step up above Skyrim and the space setting will help it even more. I think it will be very close between those 2 but I think Starfield will win because of the sheer scope even though I think Zelda will be the better game.

I actually don't know if Spiderman 2 will even be able to be nominated at this point, with all the good stuff coming out. Zelda, Starfield and FF16 are the obvious locks, so that's 3 spots already taken. But then you have Diablo 4 which seems excellent, RE4R which people love and last spot will probably be occupied by an indie title (which one it is we don't know).
Only way I can see it sneaking in is if they either decide Re4 is too similar to the original or if no standout indie game is released.

What the hell? Fallout 4 is amazing. Was my GOTY that year for sure.

I would switch Spider-Man and FF XVI. My reasoning is that Spider-Man is more or less a known quantity; the first two games are great and well-liked, Insomniac puts out consistently good games, and it's freakin' Spider-Man. There's a lot of hype for FF but I feel there is still a chance it ends up being a mild disappointment

Also, Josh, I'm not sure why it's always you I end up @ing to specifically compare our predictions lol but it's tradition now and I'm gonna stick to it 😝

EDIT: Forgot to mention, but I took away my Silksong vote and changed it to SF6. I think that or Diablo IV will likely be the sixth nomination, and I'm less sure than ever Silksong even releases this year

So, the reason I remain hesitant to put Spider-Man 2 as a lock is that I want to see how the open world plays. If the side content is mostly cookie cutter open world stuff like the first game was with clear enemy bases, collect x items, and find all notable locations then I will be a little disappointed. From the demo we saw last month, I have no doubt that the gameplay will be there and using multiple characters will be awesome. I just have very high expectations for the content. Guerilla spoiled me with the Horizon: FW side-quests. I need Insomniac to go bananas this time.

Also, I welcome this back and forth forever and ever!

My counterpoint to that is that Assassin's Creed Odyssey got a nomination in 2018 (a pretty stacked year!), so clearly cookie cutter open-world design isn't a barrier to getting a GOTY nomination if the presentation is good lol

Ghost of Tsushima and (to a lesser extent) Horizon Forbidden West as well, for more recent nominees.

Open world fatigue hasn’t really been a thing for most people, it’s not gonna preclude Spidey from getting a nomination.

Sure, although I think those relate slightly less to Josh's point since I feel both were considered less "generic" open worlds (he even used FW as an example which does, say, side quests better). The Assassin's Creed games, and particularly Odyssey, are about as cookie cutter as it gets

It's either gonna be TOTK or Starfield, i don't think any other game has a realistic shot against these two.

We'll have to see how well Starfield comes together though of course.

I won't watch anyway since i can't stand Keighley and his show and at the end of the day, the only GOTY that truly matters is yours.

Don't think that Starfield will have the same metacritic as Totk but if the game deliver its exploration promises and really has less bugs than other Bethesda releases(they are promissing this) it will win on impact alone.

Took a look at the amount of awards Galaxy and Galaxy 2 had. Considering Totk went for the same type of sequel story could repeat. Galaxy 2 had the same critical appraisal as Galaxy and better metascore among the runners for that year and still it had the lowest percentage of GOTY awards among them.

2007
Galaxy(MC 97) - 45 GOTY awards
Bioshock(MC 96) - 47

2010
Red Dead Redemption (MC 95) - 87
Mass Effect 2(96) - 68
Super Mario Galaxy 2(97) - 21

With the TGAs specifically, too, GoW (94) won over RDR2 (97) so it's not always easy to predict. I that that new IP edge (or reinvention of a known IP in this case) can really turn the tides.

Critic scores don’t really matter at TGAs. The top score has lost more often than it’s won. Only Witcher 3 and Elden Ring had the top score of the nominees, according to OpenCritic.

New IPs and reboots are typically favored for GOTY.

Did Breath of the Wild not have the highest MC that year? Was Odyssey higher?

it's going to be between Starfield, zelda and spider-man

Why this reaction, the game looks like a banger, a revolution for a saga that lost it's way years ago like Resident Evil 7 or 2 Remake was, word of mouth of the demo is extremely positive, and some reviewer twitts hints that this will be amazing.

TotK might be a "better" game, but it's too iterative, FFXVI being a big comeback could be the surprise of the year and even beat Starfiled (if accomplishes what Todd promised).

Also, FFXVI had a lot of marketing at The Game Awards and Summer Game Fest, which emphatizes being a true GOTY contender or even a winner at TGA.

The marketing means nothing, the Game Awards themselves aren’t the ones voting.

Character action games just aren’t big enough to pull enough attention to win an award like this against heavy hitters like Zelda or Starfield. The only reason why Starfield has a chance of beating Zelda at all is because of how stupidly popular it’s gonna be, FFXVI doesn’t have that.

I honestly think Zelda totk will/is more popular than starfield. FFXVI will be great game and will likely be my game of year as its my style of game.
Starfield is unknown mostly IP, it has to deliver first.

The IP isn’t really relevant here, it’s a Bethesda RPG in space. The first one for them in 8 years. It’s going to be immensely popular.

It won’t strictly come down to which one is more popular than the other, all that matters is that Starfield will be big enough to compete. After that, it needs to deliver on its promises and be a fantastic game if it wants to win.

Can the poll be edited? Mario Wonder the clear winner now.
I just added it as an option (with "edit" clarified as votes might be lower since it was added later).

Though yeah that could certainly end up being our 6th front runner now that Silksong's chances of this year are probably low. (Edit: Oh, actually looks like Diablo passed it.}

Super Mario wonder is obvious family game award winner, but I think it could sneak a game of the year nomination but it's pretty hard. It needs outstanding reviews like Mario odyssey but I think it can do it.

Maybe it's going to be something like this
Zelda TotK
Starfield
Final fantasy 16
Spiderman 2
And 2 between diablo 4, super mario bros wonder and armored core 6.
Armored core also review dependent but it's a from software game.
If diablo and mario gets in it would be 2 game from each console platform. It's pretty hard all things considered and maybe I'm undertaking resi4 remake

Final Fantasy XVI seems to have a really good shot, it's reviewing almost as well as Fire Emblem Three Houses according to Metacritic.

Wonder would have to beat out Street Fighter 6 and/or Resident Evil 4. I don’t see it happening, personally. Especially with Alan Wake II as another contender.

Realistically TOTK's only actual competition is Starfield, but that game still has a hell of a lot to prove and the deep dive video felt incredibly "curated" to me.

I remember how awful and restrictive Skyrim felt to me after playing BOTW (I adjusted eventually).

The fact that it is a new IP will help it tremendously at the TGA's though.

Not necessarily even that, I can easily see Pikmin 4 snagging it.
As for the GoTY lineup, right now I'm thinking the first five are:
1. Zelda (winner)
2. Starfield
3. FFXVI
4. Spider-Man 2
5. Resident Evil 4
Sixth will either go to Street Fighter 6 or an indie game. If Silksong doesn't release this year, I think Sea of Stars could be a surprise breakthrough critical darling.

So it'll get the reader's choice and Geoff will try his very best to no-sell it while reading the award transitioning into or out of a commercial break?

Tears of the Kingdom will be tough to knock out for my GOTY. Super Mario RPG will be my honorary GOTY, since I wasn't awarding GOTY's in 1996 when I was 7 years old.

I actually said earlier to some people that I was so sure about my GOTY DLCOYT this year, but Wonder and Mario RPG may change that :D

Honestly waiting to see the reviews for armored core 6 as I could see that potential stealing a slot from ff or diablo

This would also be my top, I love these!
