No, it was added in the 4.0.0 update over a year after Splatoon 2's launch, along with the normal/pro modes as an overhaul to how Splatfests battles were scored. Seems that system has carried over, though the final score tally is different, and the system for determining 10x/100x battles is new (it was completely random before).uhh the clout and 10x, 100x, and 333x battles stuff is new right? interesting
Yeah that’s one thing the blog and video don’t call out. I feel that’s the point of loadouts because you could change gear manually in between matches before queuing so I imagine it’s similar if not fully the way people want it considering you even have that test range now in between matches.Agreed. The Direct kind of felt like it was more for fans than newcomers, and the blog post did a better job at explaining everything.
100% this.
League was a little too stressful for my liking most of the time. My friend and I always wished we could team up in Turf War and Ranked for a bit less intense sessions. We ended up leaning on Salmon mode for that, but it's hardly the same.
Really the only things missing in this game for me are knowing I can switch my loadout/"Fit" between matches (has this been covered?), and a sane way to have voice chat and game audio at the same time. The latter is a lost cause
I know people are saying this game "just looks like Splatoon".
But I think it's way to easy to look especially at Splatoon 1 with rose tinted glasses.
In reality, Splatoon 3 blows away both games graphically. Just look at the change in animation quality, the hair movement, and everything like that.
I remember there was a Sheldon comparison between 1 and 2 going around back then, it really highlighted the massive jump in the character model's quality. You don't really notice the graphical improvements from 1 to 2, but damn. The Wii U version looked rough.
It was possible in Splatoon 2's splatfest premiere, so I'm assuming it'll be possible here. One thing that is not clear to me: will it be possible to play with a friend of the same faction in the Splatfests? I wanna introduce a friend to Splatoon during the World Premiere.
I may not be Nintendo's ideal audience - there's only very few games I can take seriously at all, most notably Zelda which is a rare combination of artistic value, gameplay finesse and supremely tasteful execution - so I skip quite a few releases, but looking at the post-2017 EPD output from that slight distance I can't help but agree. If it wasn't for porting over Wii U games... Their enormous expansion investment recently was a fantastic step in the right direction.Honestly I kind of wonder if it's a manpower issue with EPD. They may simply just not have the staff. This is echoed in stuff like BOTW2's delays, the lack of an Odyssey sequel, the sparse content with Animal Crossing at launch. Sure, COVID and all that, but Nintendo is expanding EPD for a reason, and its' because they are struggling to put out in-house content at a steady clip, relying more and more on outsourcing to partners. Maybe after the expansion and hiring spree, they'll try to make a Splatoon 4 that really feels like a generational leap instead of an iterative sequel.
And yeah, missed potential seems to be an issue with Nintendo sometimes.
To be fair, this conversation is being held ever since N64's glacial release schedule. Nintendo's always had much more potential than they've been able to execute upon due to their relatively small development workforce. I never really got their "we don't want to expand because we want to preserve Nintendo dev culture" argument when it was obvious that not expanding wasn't working exactly optimally either. It smacks more of Yamauchi-era penny pinching to be honest. Glad that that's gone out of the window.ding ding ding, we have a winner
I've been banging this drum for ages, and felt very vindicated when the EPD investment was announced
Also for some of y’all, you gotta stop putting down people who wanted more from single player. The three campaigns we’ve gotten in the series have all been fantastic and there’s especially a lot of love for the Octo Expansion, the biggest campaign yet that raised expectations for what is possible. They may be a drop in the bucket for some of you, but for others the single player is a huge part of the experience and some of the most valuable time they spend with the game. I also agree with Jersh earlier in the thread, the initial trailer for Splatoon 3 and the Rise of the Mamallians trailer each set up expectations that more attention was going to be given to single player this time so to see Nintendo turn around and just basically shrug over it in this Direct while also saying large scale DLC was incoming that single player fans have to now pin all their hopes and dreams on was very disappointing. Look there’s 12 million people who picked up Splatoon 2 alone and people are going to want and be excited about very different things from a series that does offer a lot of everything (single player, pvp, competitive pvp, co-op pve etc) even if one element will inevitably get the most love. Just because some people only put in 20 hours of Splatoon or whatever doesn’t make them lesser Splatoon fans than people all in on the multiplayer aiming for top ranks.
Glad to read this. Between the Nikkei "I Told You So"-fest (which was completely unwarranted for anyone who wasn't trying to score points) and yesterday's Splatoon Direct Meltdown I've lost a bit of Fami Optimism. This place might end up like most other forums after all.Seriously sometimes we need to stop confusing trolling with normal criticism. It‘s not like that others and me derailed an OT or bought a game despite it having a big disclaimer on the cover ‚THIS IS A MULTIPLAYER GAME WHERE YOU HAVE TO PUT IN AT LEAST 300 HOURS A YEAR‘. It was just a direct of a game in a super successful game series and some people expected different things out of it.
My main question is how exactly would they change the game to avoid being an "iterative sequel." I've seen suggestions like changing the aesthetics, gameplay, or single player campaign but they never go into detail on how they would change these outside of making the single player more like the Octo Expansion. There's no way people are unironically using "iterative sequel" and "splatoon 2.5" or whatever nearly 2k posts into this thread right? right?
Looks like a thin version of those identity protection stamps.I might have missed it, but I don't think I saw it here yet. The Japanese Splatoon website teased a Chainsaw Splatana which looks dope:

Also, there's 26 playable weapons during the world premiere splatfest
Callie and Marie look like they were wrung through a ringer and they couldn't even move their limbs. Just. Yikes. They would look better as Zombies. I forget how kind of ugly Splatoon 1 is too.You don't really notice the graphical improvements from 1 to 2, but damn. The Wii U version looked rough.
Okay so there are several details about Anarchy & X Battle that I didn't fully understand and it's so much better than I realized (at 15m22s):
And like, if you have even just 1 friend available at a time, then you'll be able to choose if you want to play Clam Blitz, Rainmaker, Tower Control or Splat Zones (once League Battle and X Battle are added into the game). Even with no friend available, only one mode will be out of reach.
This is a completely random complaint, but I noticed something the other day. If you move left to right without shooting, the camera automatically repositions itself, which can mess with your aim. There is a mechanic implemented in the game to disable it, but it's not really useable. I want there to be a toggle for this in the control settings in Splatoon 3.
I might have good news for you (I hope)
I am terrible at most multiplayer games, but I love how I can contribute in this just by doing some decorating. I love it’s look, it’s sounds, and how great it feels when you say “booyah” at the start of a match and people “booyah” back.
no i def think it would be best if someone makes a thread for the demo.By the way, @mazi
Since you created this thread, and you're a moderator, what was your idea for this thread when the Splatfest premiere comes? Will this remain the primary place for discussion of the demo until launch of the game?
That's why it's "X Battle" in its own mode rather than just X Rank. Why did I never spot the wins-losses counter on the right when I wondered how Series works. My Splatoon tunnel vision now extends from Splatoon matches to Splatoon menus.
The video also helps explain something else I kept asking myself: Why keep S+ rank going all the way up to 50 when you switch over players into X as soon as S+0? Being able to opt for slightly less stressful but still competitive matches where at worst you'll risk a bit of buffer for the next season reset is pretty welcome.
The contributions without "killing" people is what drew me into Splatoon in the first place. When I'd play other multiplayer shooters, I just felt useless for so long. Most the first month I played Splatoon 2 I was learning the controls while inking the ground, and I was still part of the victories.I am so ridiculously excited for this game!

All I wanted was more Splatoon and to be able to skip the news, so yeah, I am hyped!
I don't think that's confirmed or disconfirmed, but it's what many pro players and content creators have assumedSo will the two anarchy modes always have a different map/mode going on at the same time? So like if I don't want to be forced to play clam blitz I can just play the other anarchy mode and it will be guaranteed that It will be on a mode that isn't clam blitz?
I think/hope many people will be surprised by the specials. Solo focussed powerful specials are such a game changer. Only one that seems a bit boring still to me is the rain cloud, they should've added some thunder to that
Why was it disliked? Now that you mention the specials, some of the choices for returning ones are a little... odd to me. Idk if it's just me, but it feels like Triple Inkstrike already fulfils the role that Booyah Bomb plays. Tenta Missiles were very much disliked by many people towards the latter half of Splatoon 2 (and personally I think they're not well designed at all), and like you said, the Ink Storm feels very lackluster.
Very spammable, very quick to use, very safe to use, forces everyone to scramble, locates everyone everywhere on the map, hard counters slower attacking weapons or weapons that are less mobile forcing the game into a shooter meta, I could go on and on and on about why missiles are dislikedWhy was it disliked?
